RED BOOK: THE SCUMMY MUMMIES VERSION Every parent in Britain is familiar with the Red Book. It’s what the Health Visitor gives you when you have a baby. It’s great for making sure you’re worrying about all the things you need to worry about, and keeping track of all the things you’re doing wrong. But when it comes to being a Scummy Mummy, the Red Book seems to be missing a few pages. For example, it would be useful to know what you can expect from life as a parent, as shown in this handy graph:

The Red Book also has lots of pages where you can log your child’s firsts – smile, word, and so on. But wouldn’t it be great if you could record those scummy moments as well? For instance:

When you’re new to parenting, the Red Book can seem like a massive deal. But like nappies, Tree Fu Tom, and not owning any jeans that aren’t held together with dirt and snot, it won’t always be such a big part of your life. Years from now, you’ll wistfully flick through the pages, being reminded of all those happy trips to the vaccination clinic, and the time you nearly had a breakdown because her weight dropped from the 78th to the 77th percentile. Then you can chuck it in the bin.

TRUE STORIES: ELLIE When I was pregnant with my first child, I was convinced there was no way I wouldn't want to go back to work full-time. I loved my job, I was in line for a big promotion, and I got to travel all over the world. 'What could be better than this?' I thought. Then I had my baby. Within a week, I'd decided we had to move to the country, where I would spend the rest of my days baking cakes and making bunting. My husband just nodded and smiled, having already learned this is the best way to interact with a woman who's had less than three hours' sleep. But as the months went by, and the hormones settled down, I realised I hate bunting, and I can’t bake for shit. I started to feel like the endless cycle of breastfeeding, nappy changing, and buggy pushing was making my brain soft around the edges. I was ready to go back to work. It was hard waving goodbye to my baby that first day. But it took all of about 20 minutes to get over it, that being roughly the time it takes to drink hot cup of tea in peace. And when my Mum returned my son that evening, beaming with joy and all limbs intact, I knew we were going to be alright. Within a few weeks I felt confident enough to sign up to spend a whole night away for our annual company conference in Brighton. I was keen to show my colleagues that motherhood hadn’t altered my professional commitment, that I was still a strong, capable, and essential member of the workforce. I undermined this somewhat by delivering a lengthy speech about how much I appreciated their support, which ended with me bursting into tears. Guess I was still a bit hormonal after all. That evening, it was time for the traditional post-conference teambuilding session (massive pissup.) This being my first proper night out in over a year, I obviously got hugely over-excited, drank 800 114

glasses of wine, and sank a load of sambuca shots, something I’d decided I was too old for about seven years previously. I’m pretty sure the karaoke was my idea, although I can’t remember who started beatboxing the Super Mario Bros. theme tune first. I do know it was me who suggested we all run down to the sea and go for a paddle at 2am. At the time, I felt like a wild, free-spirited creature, demonstrating to all the world that I still knew how to embrace fun and adventure. The next day, when I woke up to ruined heels and a hole in my trousers, covered in blood and seawater, I felt like a dick. Since then, I’ve realised the trick with both nights out and work in general is to strike a balance. No one wants to sit in the pub looking at photos of my baby all night, but there’s no point in pretending I’m not a mum, either. It’s part of my identity now. Combining that with the professional side of myself is hard sometimes, but it is possible. And it’s still a lot easier than trying to run down a pebble beach while pissed in stilettos.

LAUGH LISA STURGE Everyday laughter healing for greater happiness and wellbeing Laughter exercises to help your body relax, release endorphins and offset the effects of stress Laughter is a physiological response that activates a plethora of beneficial reactions in the body. The laughter strategies in this book help you laugh more easily through a series of warm-up exercises, followed by activities to get you giggling. There are many different types of laughs – light chuckles, hearty chortles, full-on belly laughs, even fake laughter. Forced laughter has the same positive effects: just 20 seconds of laughter can be as good for the lungs as three minutes on a rowing machine. We all need to laugh more. This book shows you how.

LISA STURGE is the director of Laughterlines Coaching, working with a range of business, organisations and schools across the UK in order to promote the healing power of laughter within everyday life. • Laughter not only provides a fullscale workout for your muscles, it also unleashes stress-busting endorphins to make you feel elated and relaxed • Includes easy exercises for laughter healing to improve your happiness and wellbeing • Includes a foreword from Dr Madan Kataria, the founder of laughter yoga who brought laughter healing into the mainstream
