The Quaker Houghton Pilot Mill

A Unique Capability

Laboratory equipment and test methods alone cannot give a full picture of lubricant performance By scaling up product development on the pilot mill we can evaluate rolling fluid behavior in real-world conditions, which have been proven to closely represent performance at full industrial scale

Our Pilot Mill

- Located in Qingpu, China

- A 4-high reversing mill

- Commissioned in June 2016

Aluminum Hot Rolling Fluid Portfolio

As the world strives for a net-zero future, the growing demand for aluminum brings both new opportunities and challenges for hot rolling mills Quaker Houghton offers innovative, proven solutions to achieve best in class surface quality, minimize waste and reduce your total cost of operations

Hot Rolling Fluids

QH EVEROLL? A 1000 Series: Hot rolling oils based on highly refined mineral oils and soaps to deliver premium finish for finishing mills on demanding alloys

QH EVEROLL? A 2000 Series: Hot rolling oils based on highly refined mineral oils and ester packages, which provide maximum lubrication and cooling performance

QH EVEROLL? A 5000 Series: A unique non-soap hot rolling oil emulsion technology that prevents both metallic soap buildup and metal sludge formation for a clean mill environment, consistent fluid performance and excellent surface quality

QH ADDITIVES: Additives to maintain properties of QH EVEROLL? aluminum hot rolling emulsions

Overview

In 2019, Quaker Houghton launched a development program to bring together the strengths of both soap-based and soap-free technologies, while minimizing the drawbacks

The program concluded in 2024 with great success ? resulting in our series QH EVEROLL? A 5000, which prevents both metallic soap buildup and metal sludge formation

Available

- Keeps mills clean

- No break-in period

- Minimal tank-side additions

- Excellent surface quality

- Low product consumption

- Reduced dumping frequency Benefits

QH EVEROLL? A 5000

Superior mill cleanliness w ith

30% reduction in oil consumption

Background

\

\

Speira Holmestrand is a fully integrated production site with major recycling capacities, a hot rolling line consisting of a breakdown mill and a 2-stand 4-high tandem mill, 2 cold mills, a finishing department and a separate lacquering line Production ranges from 1xxx-3xxx-5xxx to 8xxx alloys, going into various applications such as the building and packaging industries The hot mill produces ca.120k ton rolled sheet annually.

The Challenge

\

Having been in operation for many years, the hot mill in Holmestrand has much experience working with both soap-based and soap-free emulsion technologies on its breakdown and tandem mills They required an easy-to-maintain emulsion that would reduce oil consumption, but also provide a high level of mill cleanliness.

?Our goalwasto improve millcleanlinessand reduce our oilconsumption by upgrading to an emulsion that?sasrobust aspossible. The introduction of QHEVEROLL? A 5000 was seamless, with no issuesfrom day one After five monthsin operation,we?ve seen no surface defects, and our oilconsumption hasreduced by 30%.After yearsof using both soap-based and soap-free productswe?ve never seen better millcleanlinessor so little fluid maintenance required for our emulsion system.?

The Solution

As the global leader in industrial process fluids, Quaker Houghton was already familiar with these industry-wide challenges and proposed QH EVEROLL? A 5000, a new non-soap emulsion technology developed specifically to combine the strengths of both traditional soap-based and existing soap-free technologies After very promising results on the pilot mill, Speira Holmestrand proceeded to a field trial of QH EVEROLL? A 5000 with unprecedented success.

Results After 5 Months

- Excellent mill and emulsion cleanliness

- Lowered consumption by 30% in comparison to soap-based chemistry.

- No emulsion related surface defects reported

- No tank-side additives required*

- High consistency of emulsion parameters

*With the exception of a single ester addition during very early stages of product introduction

Hydraulic Fluids

- Reduced total cost of ownership

- Enhanced process reliability

QUINTOLUBRIC® (HFDu): Based on synthetic and organic esters, the QUINTOLUBRIC® series is designed to replace anti-wear, mineral oil-based hydraulic fluids used in applications where fire hazards exist.

QH HOUGHTOSAFE? (HFC): The QH HOUGHTOSAFE? series is designed to be used in oil hydraulic systems that require a balanced combination of fire resistance and good lubrication

Greases

QH QUANTOL? LEX: Lithium complex grease that provides very good water resistance and corrosion protection as well as high film strength.

QH QUANTOL? MAX: Mineral oil calcium sulfonate grease that gives excellent corrosion protection, water resistance and operates over a broad range of service temperatures Compatible with lithium and lithium complex greases

QH QUANTOL? DYN: Ash-free grease engineered for extreme temperatures and extended greasing intervals Specially designed for limiting emulsion problems with hot rolling oil

QUINTOLUBRIC® Fire Resistant Hydraulic Fluid

QUINTOLUBRIC® (HFDu) Fire Resistant Hydraulic Fluids provide an alternative to mineral based oils in non-ferrous production, minimizing fire risk without jeopardizing productivity

Benefits

- Easily replaces mineral oil fluids:no equipment alteration necessary

- Global formulation for guaranteed performance

- Best-in-class oxidation stability for extended fluid life
