The author, John Barnes, is a civil engineer whose career in the He Ministry of Transport concentrated on roads and bridges. developed particular concerns for the environmental impact of his work and has continued with these concerns since retirement. He is a dual member of the Society of Friends (Quaker and Methodist), and he attempts to follow Donald Soper' s endeavours towards a society reflecting the kingdom of heaven. He is a longstanding member of the Quaker Universalist Group and is a member of the Christ and Cosmos Initiative, through which he has been seeking to relate the whole of creation to human values. He is preparing a second volume of poetry to follow And Orion, published in 1989.
