The PONANT Story PONANT was founded in 1988 by a group of French Merchant Marine officers with the flagship Le Ponant (a 62-passenger sailing yacht). The adventurous spirit of our founders led to a cruise line focused on exploration, navigation, unique itineraries, and state-of-the-art ships. Jean-Emmanuel Sauvée, one of the original founding members and captains, leads PONANT today as President and CEO with that same adventurous spirit. PONANT is currently the only cruise line to sail under the French flag, and as such is subject to some of the world’s strictest safety standards. For over 28 years PONANT has been taking travelers on awe-inspiring voyages to some of the Earth’s most fascinating places. Our young fleet of four luxury expedition vessels and one sailing yacht explores seven continents with state-of-the-art technology, a fleet of Zodiacs, and experts on board. PONANT also allows access like never before— whether one is navigating the magnificent ice of Antarctica, searching for extraordinary wildlife, or enjoying views of Isafjordur from the balcony. Guests enjoy French-inspired cuisine, elegant accommodations, and world-class service. They’ll travel with a small group of like-minded travelers, in the comfort and elegance for which PONANT is known. Our tradition of offering unique and inspiring experiences continues with the four new PONANT EXPLORER ships, premiering in 2018.
PONANT HIGHLIGHTS 1986 The call of the open sea… In 1986, JeanEmmanuel Sauvée, a young French Merchant Navy officer, decided to fulfill his dream of showcasing the art of traveling at sea in the finest French tradition.

The start of a great adventure In 1988, La Compagnie des îles du Ponant was created. The word “Ponant” means “West” in Latin, but was also one of the first itineraries: a cruise in the Ponant Isles.
An emblematic three-masted yacht The Le Ponant project began in 1989. In May 1991, Le Ponant embarked on its maiden cruise, a voyage that sailed in the wake of Christopher Columbus into the Caribbean archipelago.

A new generation of ships In 2007, La Compagnie du Ponant started to design a cruise ship that would perfectly combine cuttingedge technology, intimate size, and top-of-the-line amenities. Le Boréal was constructed in 2009 at the Italian shipyard Fincantieri. In 2010, this magnificent 132-cabin yacht won the “Best Newcomer of the Year – GOLD” prize awarded by the European Cruiser Association.

A promising future In autumn 2015, PONANT joined the ARTÉMIS Group, a Pinault family holding. This partnership enabled the company to sustain its globalization, consolidate its positions in France, Switzerland, and Belgium, and thus enter a new phase in its development.
New expedition ships on the horizon PONANT announced an order for four new ships, the EXPLORERS, with delivery of the first vessel expected in 2018. In keeping with its philosophy, the vessels are small-capacity and will be equipped with the latest technologies to offer expedition cruising to the world’s most remote areas.

LE PONANT Experience the privilege of a cruise aboard Le Ponant, crafted to respect the tradition of legendary sailing yachts. The ship capacity is limited to 62 guests, which provides intimacy and a convivial atmosphere. All 31 staterooms are decorated in a harmonious range of nautical shades. Guests will enjoy the refined life on board, the welcoming comfort of their cabin, the inviting lounges and restaurants, and decks extending along the full length of her 290 feet. This casually chic yacht is appreciated for its small size and a design evoking the sea—including a sun deck, outdoor restaurant, and direct access to the water from the marina swimming platform. With her sleek lines, her three masts reaching for the sky, and her sails ready to glide over the sea with the wind, Le Ponant captivates all who sail on her.

Each of our restaurants has an open-seating policy to cater to guests’ individual schedule on board. Our French chefs combine traditional gourmet cuisine with local specialties of the various ports we visit. We’ve also recently partnered with Ducasse Conseil, the consulting arm of the Alain Ducasse Enterprise, to provide menu concept creation and training for all PONANT chefs.
