THE ARCTIC Svalbard
The islands of Svalbard rise dramatically from the Arctic Ocean halfway between Norway’s North Cape and the North Pole. They give eloquent evidence of nature’s slow but ceaseless industry, scored and corrugated by glaciers that still cover 60 percent of their mass. Stony, sentinel peaks soar above deeply carved fjords and sparkling bays. In summer, the sparse tundra vegetation erupts under the endless encouragement of the Midnight Sun. Migratory birds in their millions arrive from more southerly realms, to nest and breed and nurture their young on steep striated cliffs, shingle beaches and tundra meadows. Elaborately antlered reindeer graze the slopes. Arctic foxes and predatory gulls haunt the nursery edges, alert for opportunity. Seals and walruses haul out to join the breeding season, and patient polar bears patrol the rocky shorelines and floating ice, while whales roll and breach offshore, feeding on the sea’s summer abundance. Here and there, bleached testaments to past human endeavors endure: whalebones and weathered try pots from medieval whaling stations; the wind-sanded timbers of an expedition’s launching site; a hut where someone whiled away a long-ago, dark winter. Riding in Zodiacs and paddling kayaks, observing from the decks and trekking on the islands themselves, we will experience and explore this isolated, unspoiled and breathtakingly beautiful place, as it revels in the endless days of its short, exuberant summer.

KIRKJUFELL, ICELAND
Greenland
Greenland is the largest island on earth, sprawling from near the North Pole southward across the Arctic Circle, where it wedges between the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean. Its circumference is fringed with innumerable fjords, cut deep into the planet’s most ancient, vividly colorful rocks. These waterways meander between towering alpine ranges to where shining, serpentine glaciers flow from the immense Greenland Ice Field to calve massive amounts of ice into the sea. This fringe of fjords and mountains is where Greenland’s life is concentrated. In summer it is brilliant with wildflowers; boisterous with colonies of every sort of breeding birds; and alive with grazing bands of caribou and musk oxen, Arctic foxes and polar bears. Seals, walrus and many species of whales from humpbacks to orcas, seis and porcelain-white belugas haunt the shores. Tiny, isolated human communities are scattered among the fjords, accessible only by boats or kayaks from the sea, afoot or, in winter, by dogsled. Our ship is the key to exploring this majestic place. We discover the hidden vistas folded between snowcapped peaks. We thread among towering icebergs in Zodiacs and kayaks, climb flower-bright tundra slopes and meet the people who live in this difficult, exquisitely beautiful place.
GREENLAND
Nunavut
The most remote and least-populated destinations explored during Seabourn Venture’s Arctic season are the islands of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, now included in the huge territory of Nunavut. The islands form a curve complementing Greenland’s western coastline, enclosing Baffin Bay and the Davis Strait. We will visit the small community of Pond Inlet on northern Baffin Island for a look at modern Inuit culture, still linked to age-old traditions by choice and necessity. On Devon Island we will land at the ghost town of Dundas Harbour and sail between flat-topped mountains to Croker Bay’s tidewater glacier. At Beechey Island, we can pay our respects at the graves of three of Sir John Franklin’s Northwest Passage expedition members who perished there during the long winter of 1845. Lady Franklin Island and Monument Island are named for the explorer and his wife, and their tall, weather-beaten cliffs, teeming with breeding seabirds and frequently patrolled by polar bears in search of seals and walrus, provide a dramatic climax to our memorable season in the spectacular, seldom-visited realms of the Midnight Sun. 2021 / 2022 EXTRAORDINARY EXPEDITIONS

Iceland is a paradox. The English words ‘fellow’ and ‘geyser’ are both of Icelandic origin. Of all the Arctic lands, Iceland has in many ways the most civilized and settled population. Yet it is also a singularly wild and unbridled piece of the earth, filled with jaw-dropping geologic marvels of monumental scale, enchanting landscapes of exceptional beauty, and is literally boiling with unbounded energy. Its cities enjoy an unbroken heritage of governance and lofty levels of modernity. But its immense, ground-shaking waterfalls, soaring peaks and fuming, pyroclastic vents are interspersed with an untouched, green geography harboring millions of nesting birds alongside prosperous sheep farms, and marine mammals including whales of all sorts, porpoises and seals in the heart of its busily harvested summer seas. Some say the Vikings named it Iceland to hide the secret of its bounteous plenitude. But we will go ourselves, in Zodiacs, kayaks and on foot to discover what wonders await us in Iceland’s tall, winding fjords; broad, verdant valleys; and towering stone sea stacks.
ANTARCTICA Antarctic It lay undetected for most of recorded time, beyond the margins of the known world. Even after someone stumbled on it, its isolation and the necessary rigors of the journey kept all but the most intrepid away. Those who did return ran short of superlatives to describe its magnificence. We go to Antarctica in a style undreamed by those ardent early pioneers. But what awaits us there – the snowy, sentinel mountain ranges, teeming penguin colonies and stately parades of monumental icebergs; the sight of an albatross effortlessly gliding across an ink-blue sea and the unexpected rainbow of mist arising from a breaching whale – all of that is virtually unchanged from the time before its discovery. That is the magic of Antarctica, its timeless majesty and pristine beauty. Those who have seen it claim it’s impossible to adequately describe, that you have to go yourself. We believe that is an excellent suggestion, and one we can assist travelers in accomplishing. Guests will be accompanied by a veteran Expedition Team, who in many cases have made Antarctica the focus of their life’s work. They’ll tell you what they know, point out what they think you ought to see, and step ashore with you to share the profound experience of adventure and discovery that brings them back year after year. And when guests gather at day’s end in the luxury of their elegant resort at sea, they can try to find the words to describe it for themselves. KAYAKS, ANTARCTICA
South Georgia Isolated at the end of the Scotia Ridge in the Southern Ocean, tall, imposing South Georgia Island is among the most remote and least-visited places on earth, and that suits us fine. Because its location and the cold, nutrient-rich waters of the circumpolar current create a haven for wildlife that makes it like a vision of Lost Eden. Sealers and whalers once exploited the masses of marine mammals gathered here from stations at Stromness and Grytviken, but they are long gone, their ruins appropriated by penguins and seals. Several species of penguins gather here in huge numbers, including 250,000 king penguins nesting, molting and raising chicks in large colonies like the one on the Salisbury Plain. A few million fur seals and hundreds of thousands of elephant seals haul out on the beaches to breed, birth and rear their pups. Albatrosses nest on the tussock grass slopes, joining the petrels, skuas, pipits and other birds that breed here. This mass of moving, calling wildlife seethes against a backdrop of steep cliffs and snowcapped peaks festooned with hanging and tidewater glaciers. Our activities at South Georgia will be dictated by the changing conditions and wildlife concentrations, but we are sure to visit Grytviken to visit the post office and museum and pay our respects at the grave of intrepid polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton.

KING PENGUINS, SOUTH GEORGIA
Falkland Islands The Falkland Archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean is a unique and intriguing destination for Seabourn Venture. Windswept and treeless, about 300 miles east of Patagonia, the islands are mostly encircled by cliffs and blanketed in rolling peat heath and dwarf shrubs, interrupted at intervals by stony peaks. Virtually all the land is used for sheep grazing, leaving the rugged shorelines for the prolific marine wildlife. Five species of penguins breed here, as well as different albatrosses, skuas, petrels, geese, some rare striated caracaras, and many land bird species, 16 species are endemic including a flightless steamer duck. We will surely visit the English-style capital at Stanley, on the large island of East Falkland. But our focus will be the outer islands like Saunders, the first island to be settled; the uninhabited Steeple Jason Island; and West Point Island, where we can visit a large colony of black-browed albatrosses and the one human couple who share their island, sheep farmers Lilly and Roddy Napier. On the shores of these islands, sea lions and fur seals gather in numbers; and offshore, southern right whales, orcas and porpoises are frequent visitors. There are over 700 islands in the group aside from the large East and West Falkland, and the Expedition Team Leader and Captain will choose the ones to provide the best experiences based on conditions and wildlife concentrations. 2021 / 2022 EXTRAORDINARY EXPEDITIONS
THE AMAZON During our expeditions in the Amazon River we will explore varying environments shaped and differentiated by the river itself. These can be divided into three major regions: Flooded Forests and Blackwater Tributaries – Manaus, Brazil to Rio Jutaí, Brazil The Amazon here is wide, slow and winding, with large areas of seasonally flooded igapó forest flooded by blackwater tributaries and várzea forest with sediments from the Andes carrying floating vegetation and vital nutrients to support an amazing diversity of plant and animal life along the river and floodplains. This region is almost like a seacoast, best explored by Zodiac, and we will do that on a daily basis, often with multiple departures. People here utilize the forest’s natural products and engage in agricultural and extractive activities in a place rarely seen by the outside world. Exploring this incredible environment with your Expedition Team will immerse you and help you understand and appreciate it. The Frontier Amazon – Rio Jutaí, Brazil to Leticia, Colombia The banks are closer here and the currents stronger. Our ship passes closer to the forest and we see less frequent evidence of human population. In this more intimate relation to the forest, we will again use the Zodiacs to probe the shorelines and gain insights from your Expedition Team about the daily activities of the humans and the wildlife living here. The river itself forms the triple borders of Brazil, Colombia and Peru. Isolated, traditional caboclo communities see few visitors. Picturesque, friendly Leticia is a frontier town, hundreds of miles from the nearest Colombian road. The stilt and floating houses along its waterfront reveal how closely its peoples’ lives are linked to the river. The Seaport in the Jungle – Leticia, Colombia to Iquitos, Peru The Peruvian Amazon is enveloped in an ocean of jungle where the seasons are marked only by the changing river levels and the amount of rainfall during the days. Here we will encounter indigenous populations more commonly along the banks of the river, and discover age-old human traditions surviving unaltered by the outside world. Many unexpected, unforgettable adventures await us as we board our Zodiacs to explore some of the most remote regions and exotic cultures of the mighty Amazon. Iquitos is a fascinating place. In the midst of the jungle, we find a major seaport nearly 2,000 miles from the sea, the largest city on earth that cannot be reached by road. HOWLER MONKEY, BRAZIL
CARIBBEAN & CENTRAL AMERICA As each equinox approaches, we obey an innate seasonal imperative to migrate toward more sunlit regions. Departing the dwindling daylight, we follow a different, fascinating coastline toward the tropics and cross the equatorial line, following the epic passage of Arctic terns between the polar realms. The latitudes between possess their own unique discoveries. The pink sand beaches of Bermuda hint at pleasures waiting in the warm, clear waters and colorful coral reefs of the Caribbean. Mesoamerica’s tropical forests teem with exotic birds and animals, along with archaeological legacy, contemporary indigenous traditions, and the man-made marvel of the Panama Canal. The noble Spanish Colonial cities on South America’s coast are interspersed with unspoiled reaches of coastal desert, islands white with nesting birds and loud with colonies of sea lions, otters and penguins. Further south, the Andes Cordillera rises snowcapped just inshore, and the continent’s coast is serrated by innumerable forest islands, soaring fjords and shining glaciers. BARBADOS
