once in a lifetime opportunity to witness A orangutans in the wild with onboard guest lecturer Dr. Biruté Mary Galdikas Silversea is offering its guests a rare and unforgettable opportunity to visit the world famous Camp Leaky and visit exclusive parts of the nature reserve usually closed to the general public. Located in the Tanjung Puting Reserve (now a National Park) in Central Borneo, Camp Leakey is devoted to the conservation of wild orangutans and their rainforest habitat. Led by Dr. Biruté Mary Galdikas, Silversea guests will be granted unprecedented access to the Orangutan Care & Rehabilitation Center, an honour only extended thus far to a very select group of people in the past (included former US president, Bill Clinton). Whether you are passionate about the species or simply curious about Dr. Galdikas’ work, such a unique opportunity is guaranteed to make this a meaningful, memorable trip. DR. BIRUTÉ MARY GALDIKAS BIO Scientist, conservationist, educator: for over four decades Dr. Biruté Mary Galdikas has studied and worked closely with the orangutans of Indonesian Borneo in the wild, and is today the world’s foremost authority on the orangutan. Inspired at a young age by the cheeky monkey in Curious George, Dr. Galdikas has studied extensively the behavior of the primate and has fought tirelessly for their conservation. After meeting with Kenyan anthropologist Dr. Louis Leakey in 1969, she expressed her desire to study the orangutan in the wild. It took three years for Dr. Leakey to secure the funding and support for Dr. Galdikas to begin her research. To honor her mentor, she named her first camp after him. Dr. Galdikas has lived among her subject since 1971 and has been providing unprecedented documentation on their behaviour, diet and mating systems since then. She published the first of four National Geographic articles in 1975, bringing this elusive and wary animal to widespread international public attention for the first time. Among her many awards, Dr. Galdikas is the only nonIndonesian born person to have been given the prestigious Kalpataru award, the highest honor given by Indonesia for outstanding environmental leadership. She has published four books, including her autobiography, Reflections of Eden.
