ATLANTIC ISLANDS & AFRICAN SHORES Sailing along the west coast of Africa and past small Atlantic islands, our culinary expedition offers guests the opportunity to step into history and experience disparate cultures. From the dry deserts of Western Sahara to the wine-making land of Morocco, you will experience endless contrasts, making for an exhilarating journey. EXPEDITION HIGHLIGHTS • • • • •
ollow the trading routes of Henry the Navigator F Meet the nomadic Sahraouis in Western Sahara Learn about this region’s European colonisation Wander through ancient laurel tree forests Experience authentic local cuisine and Moroccan delights
If one of your favourite parts of expedition cruising is the opportunity to become fully immersed in local culture, then join us aboard Silver Explorer for an epicurean journey along the north western coast of Africa. Our culinary trainer and leader of L’Ecole des Chefs, David Bilsand, will ensure you enjoy an entire culinary demonstration programme together with market tours, special menus and cooking classes around the areas we are sailing. After a couple of days spent exploring the islands of Cape Verde, where we will visit the colonial town of Praia and a number of historical and cultural landmarks sites, such as the Praça Alexandre Albuquerque, the Museum of Archeology and the St. Felipe fortress in the town of Cidade Velha, we will sail on to Dakhla in Western Sahara. This town was once a Spanish colony named Villa Cisneros and magnificent views can be admired from the top of the 240 steps in the old Spanish lighthouse. We will disembark to go on a 4x4 vehicle excursion on the mainland and drive along the Laguna of Dakhla, a paradise for migratory birds and especially flamingos. We will venture into incredible scenery until we reach a Sahraoui camp, where you will have the opportunity to discover the Sahraoui culture with a tea ceremony. 4x4s will be available to complete this local immersion to go birding (depending on the tide and bird presence in the area).

From Dakhla we will sail to the Spanish island of San Sebastian. After a short visit of the national park we will continue through one of the oldest laurel forests in the world – declared a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 1986. We will enjoy local tapas at the breathtaking Mirador Palmarjo restaurant. On day 9, we will cruise to Santa Cruz de la Palma where after a tour of the harbour we will visit a local plantation and rum distillery, with of course the chance to sample the finished product! In Funchal, Madeira our guests will enjoy a true “taste of Madeira” as we stop for a local drink called “Poncha” made from rum and honey, and a tour of the private Quinta São João wine property. Our drive continues through pinewoods and eucalyptus forest to Cabo Girão offering breathtaking views. Guests will be invited to try Madeiran honey cake as well as Ginja, a popular local cherry liqueur. On day 12, we will arrive in Safi, Morocco where our Moroccan adventures begin. On our drive to Marrakech we will stop at a Bedouin camp for a cup of tea with the locals. On arrival in Marrakech, our guests will be taken back to the times of “1001 Arabian nights”. The delicious local food and wonderful surroundings will create an unforgettable Moroccan experience. The following day we will explore Casablanca, Morocco’s economic capital, where we will visit the Hassan II mosque and Notre Dame de Lourdes church before making our way to Domaine Thalvin in the Benslimane province, where our guests will have the pleasure of enjoying a traditional Moroccan lunch and a tour of the vineyard (complete with tasting, of course!) We will finish our adventure cruise in Portugal, exploring the town of Lagos and the Serra de Monchique before disembarking at Lisbon.
