Unrushed. Uncrowded. Unbelievable. November 2013 — April 2015
Dear Adventurers, Un-Cruise Adventures introduces you to extraordinary experiences in wild and scenic places. As CEO and captain of the company, my time spent growing up on boats, living on boats, working on boats, and a world of travel adventures feed the Un-Cruise vision. A vision that is brought to life through the expertise of our crew and office team who are just as passionate as I am about providing unconventional adventures and going beyond your expectations.
Welcome Aboard!
Providing true, meaningful travel, of course, requires a special relationship—one of mutual respect and appreciation—with one another, the wilderness, wildlife, and communities we encounter. It was in this spirit, and a resurgence of traditional Native values, that during the summer of 2013 I was adopted into an Alaskan Tlingit tribe. It was a humbling, life-giving event, but it also represents the heart within the experiences we hope to share with you. After all, time is precious, and what we do with it matters. Get comfortable as you turn through these pages and uncover what inspires the adventurer in you. New adventures in 2014 include an Active Adventure featuring exploration in the Olympic Wilderness and the San Juan Islands of Washington State; four unique Luxury Adventures in Mexico’s Sea of Cortés operating year-round; and Heritage Adventures sailing port-to-port full season in Alaska. Give us a call, visit our website and Facebook page, and discover something special. Choose to Un-Cruise!

Un-Cruise ®
The Un-Cruise Story Unrushed. Uncrowded. Unbelievable. What began in 1997 as yacht cruising in Alaska, pioneered by American Safari Cruises, has evolved and flourished into a style of exploration we call Un-Cruise Adventures— unmatched, hands-on small group expeditions under the parent company of InnerSea Discoveries Alaska, Inc. Today, Un-Cruise Adventures offers several Styles of Adventure to choose from: Active, Luxury, Heritage, and Charter—each offering an alternative to traditional cruising. Explore waters inaccessible to larger ships, step ashore in small communities, and get up-close with wildlife. Our mission is this: Provide our guests an enriching adventure travel experience and inspire an appreciation of local cultures and the natural world. Small group travel is the heart of what we do. Our nimble yachts, expedition vessels, and replica turn-of-the-century coastal steamer serve as your platform in Alaska, Mexico’s Sea of Cortés, the Hawaiian Islands, Columbia & Snake Rivers, and in the coastal waters of Washington & British Columbia. Expert captains and guides lead you on adventure—hiking into forests and engaging in local communities; kayaking and skiff rides through serene wilderness; exploring along shore and searching for wildlife. Our adventures are flexible and vary in order to limit impacts on fragile ecosystems. Filled with unspoiled encounters, they focus on activities and excursions that complement the wilderness, wildlife, and culture of the places we visit—to change the way you see the world.
Unexpected.

Un-Cruise Adventures Far From Ordinary This isn’t small ship cruising or big ship cruising. These are Un-Cruise Adventures. Uncommon casual adventures fully-focused on delivering unexpected experiences— quality over quantity, wildlife over nightlife, life changing encounters over momentary entertainment. Our one-of-a-kind, memory-making voyages are designed to be far from ordinary and carry you outside of ho-hum tourist ports. Built on a reputation of quality and experience, each Un-Cruise Adventure is intended to inspire and satisfy your curious nature. Wildlife in its natural environment; personal exchanges behind the scenes with locals; unmatched moments melding with nature; and engagement in adventurous activities or living history presentations all innovatively highlight your days. Whether you’re in the wilds of Alaska, sunning in Mexico’s Sea of Cortés or the Hawaiian Islands, or honing your inner explorer in the Pacific Northwest—we deliver. Guests rave about the Un-Cruise experience and often comment on how genuine our crew is, but our secret is really quite simple… we’re doing what makes us, and you, happy; we work in thriving environments; we promote good health in our bodies and on our planet; and we enjoy the freedom from perpetual hurry. We take life in and give it back—and the best part… is sharing it all with you.

Delivering Experience Adventure-After-Adventure Experts in the Field In addition to getting extraordinarily close to nature and wildlife, we ensure that all guests have opportunities to learn about what they are seeing and experiencing. We engage experts and historians to interpret, narrate, or bring history to life. In Alaska, a National Park Ranger might join you on board for dinner; or a U.S. Forest Service wilderness ranger kayaks right up to the vessel and hops aboard to talk about natural history and their special bond with the land. And on any special theme departure, guest hosts further your knowledge with hands-on interaction. Supplementing our onboard team, these specialists provide a tremendous resource and added value for our small contingent of guests.
Onboard Team The best in the industry—our captains, chefs, expedition team, hotel staff, and deck staff are individually selected not only for their outstanding knowledge, customer service, and safety skills, but also for their genuinely welcoming and enthusiastic personalities. Our expedition and legacy leaders are experienced guides with advanced training in natural and/or cultural history. Our customer service staff is made up of energetic men and women who are as excited about where you’re going as you are. Our captains and engineers have the certifications and skills to provide you with a safe and confident exploration experience.
We’ve deservedly earned our reputation—one guest at a time. Unassuming.

Life On Board Escape to Wellness Culinary Sensations Our executive chefs create exquisite meals, using locally sourced fresh ingredients to reflect the flavors of your destination. Each day includes an early-riser breakfast of fresh fruit, bakedonboard pastries and breads, and a full breakfast complete with specialty items. Lunches range from pasta salads and sandwiches to homemade soups and ethnic dishes. Dinners offer a choice of entrées, including fresh seafood and meats. Vegetarian dishes are available and special dietary needs can be met with advance notice. Hors d’oeuvres for the cocktail hour feature a variety of appetizers, and desserts are varied and plentiful. Fine spirits, wines, and microbrews are served aboard all of our vessels, with many even featuring sustainable cask wines on tap. With our Luxury and Heritage Adventures, unless there’s a barbecue on deck or some other special event, your meals are always served over several courses—with particular attention to your personal preferences. A more casual-style dining experience is offered on our Active Adventures, where exceptionally high quality fare is served buffet-style during the day and plated at dinner. All of our meals ensure fresh, healthful dining experiences.
Wellness, Fitness & Relaxation Onboard amenities allow you to escape through yoga, relaxing in on-deck hot tubs or saunas, enjoying a good workout on the fitness equipment, or being pampered by our wellness director / massage therapist. Nature’s splendor takes care of the rest. And at the end of your voyage, our onboard team will send you off with a renewed sense of beauty and spirit. A complimentary massage is an included amenity on Heritage Adventures aboard the S.S. Legacy, and on Luxury Adventures aboard the Safari Endeavour, Safari Explorer, and Safari Voyager. Massage is available on Active Adventures aboard all of our expedition vessels for an additional charge. Depending on your massage therapist, your massagestyle choices may include traditional massage, lomi lomi, shiatsu, or a comfortable chair massage.
Amenities vary by vessel; refer to the Fleet At-A-Glance chart on page 72 for details.

Four is a pretty significant number, and after a lot of thought, more pondering, and then careful consideration, we arrived at four noteworthy Styles of Adventure: Active, Luxury, Heritage, and Charter. Each style offers a distinct focus, personality, and range of activities. And depending on which style you choose and which vessel you’re on, the amenities and activities included may vary, but are all exceptional. With each of our adventure styles, the atmosphere is always casual, the service attentive, and our bridge is open. Once on board, you’re expected to relax, give in to the moment, and leave the stresses of the world at home. Our onboard expedition and legacy leaders guide your way and the wildlife is always unleashed. So without further ado, it’s time to consider your options... unwind each day with a microbrew or glass of wine; a backdrop of cactus-clad desert rims or snow-capped mountains; kayaking, hiking, and snorkeling or bringing history to life—the choice is yours.

Activity Levels & Action Get Ready. Get Set. Go. You could be kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) one morning and snorkeling the next. Another day may offer a gentle afternoon shore walk or have you feeling the muscles burn with a rigorous hike (even a little bushwhacking). And if you just feel like taking it easy, that’s okay, too. For those who take their adventure on the lighter side, you can enjoy riding in the skiff or chatting up the captain on the bridge. Whether you are looking for mild, moderate, or rigorous outdoor pursuits, or a more Zen wilderness experience, we offer activities to suit a variety of skill levels. We rank our hiking excursions with an activity level to ensure the right fit: 1 – Easy; 2 – Moderate; 3 – Challenging; 4 – Strenuous; 5 – Difficult. Depending on where you might be exploring, the expedition team on board will provide the insight needed for you to make a safe and enjoyable choice.
Gearing Up Each expedition vessel is equipped with top-of-the-line kayaks and SUPs. There is a nominal daily use charge for snorkeling gear and wet suits. Limited quantities of hiking poles, binoculars, mud boots, and rain gear are also available on board for your use, but to ensure availability, fit, and comfort, we strongly encourage you to bring your own. A detailed packing list is available on our website. Activities may include: u Whale watching u Unbelievable kayaking and SUPing u Inflatable boat excursions u Morning yoga and stretching u Hikes in the wilderness, to a cave, or along shore u Unequaled glacier viewing u Untamed wildlife observation u “Polar bear plunges” u Discoveries by underwater hydrophone and bow-mounted camera u Engaging cultural encounters Adventure opportunities abound, but just in case you want more, we’ve arranged some additional excursions with local experts to further enhance your experience. Alaska’s Inside Passage Southeast Alaska & Glacier Bay National Park Shaped by massive glaciers over millions of years, the temperate rainforest of Southeast Alaska (also known as the Alaska Panhandle) reveals wildlife-rich fjords and spectacular scenery. Throughout history, its channels and waterways have served as important travel corridors for Native Tlingit, Tsimshian, and Haida peoples and Gold Rush era steamships. The Tongass National Forest—the largest in the U.S.—is 16.8 million acres and constitutes the majority of area. The 3.3-million-acre Glacier Bay National Park was recognized in 1986 as a biosphere reserve, and in 1992, earned its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other features of the region include the Alexander Archipelago and Misty Fjords National Monument. Thoreau once wrote, “We need the tonic of wildness... We can never have enough of nature.” Today, receding glaciers reveal a landscape that has been covered with ice for tens of thousands of years and, depending on your itinerary, our expert teams guide you on a journey of adventurous activities, luxury in the pursuit of adventure, or on a revealing voyage of the region’s telling past. Each adventure shares an abundance of nature—brown and black bears, wolf and deer, mountains and glaciers, humpback whales and orca, rainforests, bald eagles, and sea birds. Through time, explorers, authors, naturalists, captains, and visionaries have made discoveries in this unforgettable natural laboratory—now, you can too.
“This trip was worth every cent! It was beyond my wildest dreams. Alaska is so beautiful! Thanks to the crew & Un-Cruise for making it a trip of a lifetime!” — Tim S., Marysville, OH Undiscovered.

He plotted the itinerary and headed for Seattle. It was 1899 when E. H. Harriman left Seattle on the Harriman Alaska Expedition—accompanied by a team of artists, photographers, naturalists, and guides—all charged with cataloging the flora and fauna of the Alaska coastline. Now it’s your turn. Setting sail through the Salish Sea, it’s time to embark with your expedition team and skilled crew on a wilderness discovery of your own.
Days 2-11 This much wilderness has an uncanny ability to inspire. Take in the pure air and fill your days with fjords and rainforests, kayaking and hiking, and genuine companionship—orca, seals, sea lions, sea otters, whales, dolphins, porpoise, sea birds, bald eagles, and of course, your fellow adventurers. Along the way, uncover perfectly hidden places, ideal for a morning hike or afternoon of paddling and skiffing. Perhaps your first attempt ever at paddle boarding! Pass northward through Canada’s and Alaska’s Inside Passages discovering a world of contrasts—gray misty mornings, white-capped mountains, and colorful totems. During stops in Ketchikan and Klawock, you’ll learn firsthand the history and influence of local Native cultures. Your passages into the Misty Fjords National Monument and through El Capitan Passage unveil some of the most pristine and monumental vistas of your journey. And there’ll be plenty of whale watching occasions in Chatham Strait, Frederick Sound, and Stephen’s Passage—the summer feeding grounds for the largest concentration of humpback whales in the northern hemisphere.

AlasKa’s Inside passage
L
A turning point in any life, it was Eliza’s first trip to Alaska. Led by a strong mind and heart, Eliza Scidmore—writer, photographer, lecturer, geographer—was a maverick in her own right. In the summer of 1883 she set sail on a fascinating journey along the Inside Passage delivering supplies and mail. Her first book recounted her Alaska travels, launching a lifelong career as a travel writer. As you depart Juneau and head south for Seattle, your adventure will surely be as memorable.
Days 2-11 Glacial landscapes, legends of the mythical shapeshifting “Kushtaka,” and the zigzagging navigational lights of “Christmas Tree Lane” are just a handful of the interesting nuggets you could write home about. Sheer granite walls line a winding fjord and large floating icebergs pass by on your approach to the twin Sawyer Glaciers. There’ll be hikes on scenic backcountry trails, paddling along pristine waterways, and intertidal shore walks in a backdrop of natural splendor. Wildlife abounds in Behm Canal—orca, porpoise, sea lions, brown and black bears, mink, marten, eagles, and otters. Keep watch for breaching whales in Frederick Sound. In port visits to Wrangell and Ketchikan, hear stories of Tlingit culture, view recently carved totems, and stroll down notorious Creek Street, once a red-light district in downtown Ketchikan. Wind your way into the stunning glacial valleys of Misty Fjords for an up-close look at this majestic wilderness until your exploration turns south through Canada’s Inside Passage.

The lure of gold and promise of riches beckoned Jack London, although perhaps it’s the call of the wild and tales of adventures past that lures you. As one of the most published American figures, it was London’s 1897 quest to join the Klondike Gold Rush that provided the literary gold of his early stories. Your own story unfolds from the moment you embark and come face-to-face with some of history’s most revered and feared personalities.
Days 2-11 Imagine what it must have been like stepping aboard a steamship bound for Alaska, outfitted with nothing but a canvas backpack, bedroll, some crusty bread, a canteen, and visions of fortune—it’s quite the contrast to the modern amenities, fine dining, and attentive crew that’ll provide your comfort. Between Seattle and Juneau, you’ll travel between ports encountering pristine wilderness and wildlife. In quaint towns along your journey, included visits to museums and historic places unveil significant moments in time—life as a miner, lessons in statehood and whaling, Russian history, and Tlingit culture. Witness calving glaciers, barking sea lions, and soaring sea birds in Glacier Bay National Park, and through the northern whale waters of Icy Strait, keep watch for the gentle humpbacks. Feasting on krill. Breaching. Giving you the fluke.
Days 12-13 The Gold Rush greatly changed Haines and Skagway. Learn the area’s early history as a trading center and the significance of notable landmarks. When in Haines—a common spot for birders—keep watch high overhead for the white-feathered heads of resident bald eagles. Skagway’s wooden boardwalks line the town’s historic buildings where tales of betrayal, fortune, and mystery come alive. Ride a narrow gauge
railway 3,000 feet up and around cliff-hanging turns for a stunning panorama of glaciers, mountains, gorges, and waterfalls. Survive it, and join the captain for a toast at tonight’s Farewell Dinner, then relive your journey with a memorable presentation. After breakfast, bid adieu to your newfound friends and disembark for your transfer to the Juneau airport.
HERITAGE ADVENTURES include – All onboard meals; premium spirits, fine wine, and microbrews; exclusive
roundtrip transfers and baggage handling between airport/vessel; port fees and taxes; interpretive shore visits and onboard presentations; entry fees to national parks, museums, and other historical venues; wellness program: hot tub, sauna, fitness equipment, yoga, and a complimentary massage; and an introductory annual membership to Alaska Geographic+

When the Klondike Gold Rush began in 1897, Alaska was a land of opposites—hardship and promise, good fortune and bad luck, lawlessness and justice—and Soapy Smith, con man extraordinaire, saw opportunity. Unlike your journey, Soapy traveled with his own “law and order society” and was thrown out of towns, welcomed in saloons, and his name was legendary. The present slips away and the past emerges as you sail out of Ketchikan, through what is now the Tongass National Forest.
Days 2-6 You’ll meet any number of fascinating characters during your passage through time sailing in and out of ports strategic to prospectors or that served as launch points for pioneering naturalists. Cruise “inside routes” long ago plied by Russian sea otter hunters, dock in towns that flourished as fur trading centers, and visit forts and landmarks where history was forever changed. With your crew of scallywags and hooligans, stagger back to the vessel’s Pesky Barnacle Saloon, and imagine the revelry of the day. Trusting your captain to seek out the best opportunities for wilderness and wildlife viewing, you are sure to find it along the shores of Chichagof Island and in the northern whale waters of Icy Strait. Lounging sea lions, gentle humpbacks, and flocks of resident seabirds— murrelets, puffins, and black-legged kittiwakes. Glaciers unfold front and center in Glacier Bay National Park, and the dramatic 15,000-foot peaks of the Fairweather Range drape the skyline before your sail toward Lynn Canal, North America’s deepest fjord.
Days 7-8 Spend your last day in the Gold Rush town of Skagway—the setting for Jack London’s Call of the Wild—and in Haines, an integral native trade center. Tour an old fort, visit a
museum, stroll along wooden boardwalks, and ride a narrow gauge railway 3,000 feet up and around cliff-hanging turns for a stunning panorama of glaciers, gorges, mountains, and waterfalls. Exhilarated, join your captain at the Farewell Dinner and close the evening with a photographic recap by your legacy team. After breakfast, say farewell to the crew and disembark for your transfer to the Juneau airport.

“The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness.” With champagne in hand, sail into secluded Alaska wilderness in the spirit of John Muir, America’s most famous and influential naturalist. Muir was the first in a long line of distinguished scientists to visit Glacier Bay National Park, and you certainly won’t be the last. Muir’s heart remained wild throughout his life, and this wilderness explorer was renowned for his exciting adventures. Following in his footsteps, yours surely will be too.
Days 2-6 Surrounded by scenery more spectacular than any place on earth, you’ll understand Muir’s sentiments. Traveling nearly 60 miles up-bay, a Glacier Bay National Park ranger shares the park’s fascinating geology and history. Board a skiff and weave among icebergs that have cracked off the face of a glacier. Kayak in the quiet of majestic wilderness and relish in unfettered time for hikes ashore. Back at the yacht, your crackerjack team is there to greet you with a hot toddy when you return, so enjoy the thrill of the wild. After all, it is luxury in the pursuit of adventure. More ultimate exploration awaits you in Icy Strait, the richest whale waters in Southeast Alaska, and in Frederick Sound and Stephen’s Passage. Join the captain on the bridge or go on deck with your expedition team and keep watch for porpoise, sea lions, and the telltale blow of humpbacks. Enjoy the comforts on board and discover a world of wonder in those “not in the guidebook” places.
Days 7-8 Cliff-walled fjords and a pristine tidal inlet are on tap today as you slip into an area widely acclaimed as the most beautiful in Alaska—Endicott Arm and Fords Terror. Explore this majestic fjord by kayak or skiff, a unique opportunity indeed. Rugged ice-covered mountains gleam high overhead and a glacier actively calves into the ice-filled fjord. Enjoy a festive Farewell Dinner, and before turning in, your expedition team
shares a photo journal of your voyage. Gather for breakfast, and back in historic Juneau, transfer to the airport or begin your Un-Cruise extended stay.

A
In a land where everything is great—mountains, glaciers, wilderness, and wildlife, not to mention thousands of miles of coastline—one has to wonder what all the hubbub was about when U.S. Secretary of State William Seward instigated the purchase of Alaska from Russia. Unwavering in his effort, in March of 1867 it became Seward’s most successful achievement. The purchase was mocked by the public as “Seward’s Folly,” but rolling in his grave, he had the last laugh with the discovery of gold a mere 30 years later. Sail through the channel out of Juneau, and discover its greatness for yourself. Days 2-6 Pass go and don’t stop as you sail into Glacier Bay, one of America’s crown jewel national parks—it’s yours for the taking. Accompanied by one of the park’s rangers, take a boot-sucking hike through sandbars and rainforest and go face-to-face with glaciers, only to be greeted with a warm mug of hot chocolate when you step back on board. Lingering for wildlife during your three full days in the park, you’ll find whales, sea lions, mountain goats, sea otters, bears, moose, eagles, brightly-colored puffins, Black Oystercatchers, and many other species of rare sea birds. With camera in hand, join the captain on the bridge or your expedition team out on deck and set your course for arguably the richest whale waters in Southeast Alaska. Ride the skiffs for a closer inspection of the rugged, wild shore with eyes set for possible bear sightings and anchor in remote waters for an opportunity to lower the kayaks and skiffs or enjoy an intertidal walk with your guides.
Days 7-8 The small boat haven of Peril Strait connects to the very narrow, historic, and wildlife-rich Sergius Narrows—a great place to watch the shoreline for bears, the waters for otters and whales, and to look skyward for eagles. After an
adventurous, but “un-perilous” day, toast your voyage with a festive Farewell Dinner and a photo journal presentation by your expedition team. Gather for breakfast as you cruise into Russian-influenced Sitka, then disembark for your transfer to the airport.

AlasKa’s Inside passage
L
“Just think! Some night the stars will gleam”—and you could be sitting in the hot tub beneath them. Back at the turn of the century, author and poet Robert Service didn’t have a hot tub, but he did write that line about the stars. And after spending several years on the Alaska frontier, you can bet that he’d seen a few. To be sure, he’d seen and heard plenty—gripping yarns of the wild Northwest and the pursuit of “the muck called gold.” Falling in love with their stories, he became an armchair adventurer. It’s time to pack your sense of adventure, and write your own.
Days 2-6 Pass by hundreds of cascading waterfalls and some of the largest icebergs in all of Alaska, then reach the glaciers at the end of a winding fjord, and it’s sure to cure whatever ails you. Poetic in every sense of the word, the wilderness surrounding Tracy Arm and Thomas Bay offer up some of the finest paddling, hiking, and legends in Southeast Alaska. Take it easy on a lush forest trail or intertidal shore walk, get down and dirty in the muskeg and mud, or go big on an 11-mile hike to a glacially-fed lake. Learn about Kushtaka—mythical shape-shifting creatures—and steer clear when exploring by kayak, paddle board, or skiffing along shore. Legends and lore continue with totems and a sacred tribal house. The wild life is everywhere, but in Frederick Sound and along Behm Canal, it’ll likely take shape in the form of bears, wolves, harbor seals, sea lions, orca, and humpbacks.
Days 7-8 It’s your last day for play, and time to soak in the splendor of a largely forgotten corner of the world—Misty Fjords National Monument— affectionately called “The Yosemite of the North.” Glacial valleys filled with sea water, and sheer 3,000-foot cliffs are a haven for sea birds, brown and black bears, mountain goats, Sitka blacktailed deer, mink, moose, river otters, and other wildlife. This evening, enjoy a farewell toast and
reminisce about your journey over a sumptuous dinner. Enjoy breakfast before disembarking for your transfer to the Ketchikan airport. ALL ADVENTURES include – All onboard meals; exclusive transfers and baggage handling between airport/ vessel; entry fees to national parks/preserves; most from-the-vessel adventure activities and equipment; wellness program: hot tub, sauna, fitness equipment, and yoga LUXURY ADVENTURES also include – Premium spirits, wine, beer; port fees and taxes; all from-the-yacht adventure activities; a complimentary massage; and an introductory annual membership to Alaska Geographic+

Neither cloud failure, nor liquid sunshine gets in the way on this journey. The same could also be said about the young American naturalist, anthropologist, paleontologist, and geographer William Dall’s many expeditions to Alaska. The undisputed Alaska expert in both biology and Native cultures, he spent years writing about Alaska and documenting his vast collection for the Smithsonian Museum. Dall loved Alaska, and in 1880, he even took his new bride there for their honeymoon! Setting sail through the Tongass National Forest, it’s time to make your own discoveries. Days 2-6 It was wild and woolly then, and as you’ll discover firsthand, it still holds true today. The remoteness is unmatched, and this hidden gem is very much alive—alive with vivid, raw forest, and an abundance of wildlife both above and below the water’s surface. In unhindered passages and hidden coves, take to the water by kayak, paddle board, and skiff, keeping watch for a magical array of marine life. A popular summer feeding ground for whales, join playful porpoise, orca, humpbacks, and Steller sea lions in Frederick Sound and Stephen’s Passage—and along shore, keep your eyes alert for sea birds, eagles, wolves, and black bear. Discover a rustic Native community thriving on the farthest reaches of the wild Alaska coastline; and hike a winding high forest trail to explore inside El Capitan Cave, the largest known cave in Alaska and one of the largest mapped caves in the Americas. Eager to share, your captain and expert expedition team know the secrets of the wilderness.

Timing is Everything! The Best Times to Visit The “when to go” question comes up often, in fact it’s almost always the first question asked. Rain, bears, whales, sunlight, northern lights—how much, how little, how long, what variety, how high, how low—these are all key interests when planning your Alaskan vacation. It’s The Big Land, and therefore, there is no “cookie cutter” answer to these curiosities.

Mexico’s Sea of Cortés World Heritage Site & Biosphere Reserve Just south of California lies an unrushed and uncrowded inland sea known as the Gulf of California, Vermilion Sea, Sea of Cortez, or Sea of Cortés. A birder’s paradise—this rich archipelago serves as an important bird refuge and migration corridor. It is a place author John Steinbeck and marine biologist Ed Ricketts found “ferocious with life” and described by Jacques Cousteau as the “world’s aquarium” and the “Galápagos of North America.” We tend to agree. UNESCO even declared it a World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve, noting it as one of the most biologically diverse marine environments on Earth. These wildlife-rich waters and islands are home to both plants and animals found nowhere else. Each of our island-hopping Luxury Adventures in Mexico’s Sea of Cortés uncovers a world of breathtaking beauty and wildlife—giant and small lizards, sea turtles, boobies, pelicans, frigate birds, blue whales, gray whales, orca, humpback, pilot and fin whales, dolphins, whale sharks, mantas, and sea lions. Kayak in coastal mangroves and in crystalline blue coves. Hike along dunes, cactus-clad ridges, and among desert scrub. Swim with playful sea lions, watch whales, and snorkel among colorful coral. And in a picturesque setting of red rock cliffs, discover a centuries-old town or relax on a white-sand beach. Explore this extraordinary place and discover firsthand how small the human presence here truly is.
“Pam and I really enjoyed Baja. A few weeks prior to departure, I think my wife was having second thoughts about the itinerary, but after the whale watching, she was hooked. She said it was the best cruise we had ever been on—we have been on over 45.” — Wayne & Pam W., Kingwood, TX Undeniable.

The more time one spends among the whales and the abundant marine life and magic Baja has to offer, the sooner one understands the passion Noble Prize-winning author John Steinbeck felt on his 1940 respite from writing, collecting biological specimens in the Sea of Cortés. Stocked with supplies and a bountiful sense of adventure, you’ll put in at the tip of Baja’s southernmost point and head south for the whale waters of the Gordo Banks Sea Mount before turning the bow northward and following Steinbeck’s path into the protected waters of the gulf.
Days 2-6 In this massive natural aquarium—containing everything from humpback whales, mobula and Manta rays, pods of dolphins, blue, fin, sei, orca, and 50-ton sperm whales to the tiny animals found in tide pools—you’ll also find grand birding opportunities. Blue-footed boobies, brown pelicans, cormorants, and gulls all call the area home. At Magdalena Bay—where the gray whales are known to migrate and calve—ride in a panga and observe them in the lagoons. On this island-hopping voyage, sailing through islands once pillaged by conquistadors for their black pearls, you’ll nestle into white sand beaches, explore a natural salt chuck, hike cactus-clad rims led by your top-notch expedition team and meet a local ranchero family for some unmatched camaraderie. Straight out of a movie set, spend your days in hidden coves—snorkeling along barnacled rocks and kayaking, paddle boarding, and skiffing amidst hues of blues. By night, look up at the stars, and watch the waters for the magical luminescence.
Days 7-8 Wind up your last full day of fun at a steep rocky outcropping—leaping straight from the sea—for an early morning snorkel with playful, agile sea lion pups, swaying coral, and seabirds perched

Mexico’s Sea of Cortés
L
Few places on Earth have been captivating explorers for centuries and can boast such biological diversity. So when legendary diver Jacques Cousteau tagged the Sea of Cortés as the “world’s aquarium” and “Galápagos of North America,” he had experienced firsthand the richness of this underwater world. And now it’s your turn. Time to kick off your week and sail into the sunset—beginning with the snorkelers’ jewel of Cabo Pulmo, a living coral reef, and Isla Cerralvo, whose official name is Isla Jacques Cousteau.
Days 2-6 Wildlife and exploration top your agenda over the next several days. It’s the perfect environment for a marine life search. Look out for pods of dolphins, blue, fin, sei, orca and sperm whales as they spout and dive in the surrounding waters, and for Blue-footed boobies, brown pelicans, cormorants, and gulls perched above on a rocky ledge. Whale sharks, the largest known species of fish in the ocean, are known to frequent the Bahía de La Paz—watch for the ‘footprint’ of these gentle giants along the water’s tranquil surface. On the peninsula’s mainland, take an extended hike to the lost Dolores Mission, abandoned in 1768; at Bahía Agua Verde, experience the “real Baja” with a burro ride and bonfire as you visit with a local ranchero family; and enjoy a walking tour in the seaside village of Loreto and leisure time shopping and strolling La Paz’s malecón. Desert landscapes, a mangrove sanctuary, and crystalline waters provide the backdrop for a week of skiff exploration, hiking, kayaking, and stargazing.
Days 7-8 Formed by a volcanic crater, the finale of your week is at one of the most beautiful islands in Baja—the Island of the Holy Spirit. The island’s idyllic wild bays offer some of the best kayaking in the world
and there’ll be time ashore for beachcombing a shell-strewn shore or hiking inland among exotic desert cacti. After tonight’s special Farewell Dinner, your expedition team recaps the week’s adventure with a slideshow. Back in San José del Cabo, your adventure concludes after breakfast with a transfer to the Los Cabos airport. Mexico’s Sea of Cortés
L
“HIS mind had no horizon,” Steinbeck wrote of the character Doc in Cannery Row, who he modeled after his close friend Ed “Doc” Ricketts—marine biologist, ecologist, and philosopher. Although often accredited to Steinbeck, it was the words of Ricketts, “ferocious with life,” that resonates so intensely in The Log From the Sea of Cortez, a telling of their 1940 expedition in the Sea of Cortés which was based on Ricketts’ journal. Setting sail out of Guaymas, witness that same ferocity as you follow the northern path of their trip on your own expedition.
Days 2-6 There’ll be excellent opportunities for viewing marine life, bird watching, and discovering history this week. On some of the of the most isolated islands in the gulf, you’ll visit protected Biosphere Reserves, learn of ancient Seri beliefs and their intimate relationship with the land and sea, and perhaps experience “The Hunting of the Snark” (a search for boojums on a desert hike). Cruising through the nutrient-rich Midriff Islands, you’ll uncover their high abundance of pelagic fish, marine mammals, and over 50 species of birds— Blue-footed boobies, brown pelicans, cormorants, gulls, or try and catch a glimpse of a Costa’s hummingbird or ash-throated flycatchers—you’ll need to keep your eyes peeled both above and below the surface. Whether snorkeling, kayaking, paddle boarding, or hiking, surprises are surely in store. You may get lucky with a chance to snorkel alongside a sea turtle or gentle whale shark. There is no better place to do it.
Days 7-8 Your last day in paradise takes you to Isla San Esteban, home to many odd species found only in these islands. Keep your eyes peeled on and between the rocks for spiny-tailed iguana and Pinto chuckwalla lizards basking in the sun. Desert hikes, kayaking, and snorkeling
round out the day’s activities. In the evening, enjoy the Captain’s Farewell Dinner and a special presentation from your expedition team. After breakfast, your weeklong adventure comes to an end with a transfer to the Hermosillo Airport.

Mexico’s Sea of Cortés
L
In search of a mythical land— Spanish explorer Francisco de Ulloa was lost at sea when he first set eyes on this unknown body of water. It was 1539, and he called it the Vermilion Sea, a result of the billions of tiny microscopic organisms that gave the sea a red appearance. Commissioned by Hernán Cortés, Ulloa circumnavigated the gulf and shortly after he returned home, began referring to it as the Sea of Cortés in honor of his patron. Relive his voyage from the mouth of the gulf, to Mexico’s northern mainland coast. Days 2-13 Although centuries have passed since its discovery, communities along its shores still draw their living from the Vermilion Sea—as you’ll soon uncover hopping between islands and ports along the way. Stroll the malecón in centuries-old La Paz, enjoy the arts and crafts shops lining the streets of Loreto, and in the French-founded ghost town of Santa Rosalia the undeniable highlight will be the El Boleo bakery and the old metal church, said to be designed by French architect Gustave Eiffel. There’ll be chances to don your snorkel at a living coral reef, slip into a kayak or test your balance on a paddle board in picturesque coves, explore a mangrove by skiff, and hike inland among exotic desert cacti as you make your way through the gulf. Captain’s choice exploration and your passage through the Midriff Islands, Bahía de los Ángeles, and San Lorenzo Marine Archipelago National Park offer unmatched opportunities for viewing whales, sea turtles, and a plethora of other marine life and birds.
Days 14-15 Paradise delivers excellent opportunities for desert hikes, kayaking, snorkeling, and bird watching on your last full day of exploration. At Isla Tiburón, homeland to bands of the Seri people for many centuries, you’ll learn about their history. Look along the rocks
for spiny-tailed iguana and Pinto chuckwalla lizards on Isla San Esteban. A Captain’s Farewell Dinner and slideshow wrap up your adventure. After breakfast, your adventure ends back in Guaymas with a transfer to the Hermosillo Airport.

Hawaiian Islands The Aloha State Formerly known as the “Sandwich Islands”—as named by Captain Cook following his visit in 1778— this archipelago of volcanic islands and atolls sits at the center of the North Pacific Ocean marking the northeast corner of Polynesia. The island chain forms the largest marine sanctuary in the world and one of the world’s most important habitats for humpback whales. Two-thirds of the North Pacific population migrates to Hawaii each winter for breeding, calving, and nursing. We encounter many of these same humpbacks in Alaska where they feed during the summer months. On a Hawaiian Islands Un-Cruise Adventure, you can expect exhilarating days kayaking at the face of a cliff or through a lava hole, watching marine life gracefully leap or skirt around your skiff, and engaging and learning from the hearts of locals. When on board, you’ll explore remote shorelines, mostly staying on the leeward side of the eastern-most Hawaiian Islands chain, and there’s ample time for relaxing on the upper deck, mingling in the lounge, or chatting up the captain on the bridge. Most all of our crew are from the islands—so they know the secrets and keep it authentic—and uncover the islands’ natural gifts in a way only accessible on an Un-Cruise Adventure. Immerse yourself, and experience the islands from a different perspective.
“All we can say is WOW! We have been to Hawaii multiple times, but until this week, we had barely scratched the surface. We have been to places where we have been served well, but not with the same friendliness and willingness. We loved every minute aboard the Safari Explorer, including all our “bridge” time and your whale enthusiasm. What a week!” — Jeff and Linda E., Bellevue, WA Unusual.

Like a string of pearls pulled up from the sea, the jewels of your voyage are its exclusive amenities and unmatched encounters. It was 1778 and Captain James Cook’s third voyage to the Pacific when he and his crew arrived as the first westerners to witness the rich Polynesian culture in the Hawaiian Islands—he had come bearing gifts and was welcomed as a high chief. Returning a year later, his visit was far less amicable. Unlike Cook’s final visit, your inter-island yacht adventure promises to be filled with pleasantries, high-quality service, and warm Aloha’s.
Days 2-6 Get a sense of Hawaii long ago and talk story with the locals. Join your mostly local crew and be enticed by Hawaiian legend and the hula’s soothing rhythm. During a week of kayaking, sailing, paddle boarding, and cultural visits ashore, the history of this ancient homeland unfolds. With no stop lights and no high-rises, you’ll welcome leisure time in the paniolo town of Kaunakakai, the lingering scent of plumeria, and Moloka’i’s slower pace. Gear up for water play at Lana’i and hike to the island’s spatter and cinder cone, then paddle an outrigger from a Maui beach and linger under Lahaina’s giant Banyan tree (with its tuneful Myna’s). The Humpback National Marine Sanctuary provides front-row seats as you cruise through the marine breeding grounds in search of dolphins, whales, and other marine life. By skiff, explore shores lined with lava tubes and coconut palm fringed bays along the island of Hawai’i. Discover coral gardens chock-full of colorful corals and underwater life, and snorkel in a known sea turtle habitat by day and at night, with Giant Pacific Manta rays. See the islands from a new perspective.
Days 7-8 On your last day, you’ll skiff into Kealakekua Bay— where Captain Cook was slain in 1779—for some of the islands’ best snorkeling. Uncover the charm
of historic Kailua-Kona as you leisurely stroll around town, and this evening, celebrate your voyage with the Captain’s Dinner and photographic recap of your adventure. As the Safari Explorer docks at Kawaihae Harbor, you’ll be transferred to the Kona Airport or to your extended Un-Cruise hotel stay. and baggage handling between airport/yacht; port fees and taxes; entry fees to national parks/preserves; all from-the-yacht adventure activities and equipment; wellness program: sauna, fitness equipment, yoga, and a complimentary massage

Columbia & Snake Rivers Legacies of Exploration & History Roll on, Columbia, roll on. Embrace the American West spirit and encompass the dramatic contrast of stark natural beauty and hand-of-man achievements on this inclusive voyage. Forged by volcanic eruptions 40-60 million years ago and catastrophic floods near the end of the last ice-age, the basin has been inhabited by humans for over 15,000 years. Indigenous peoples had long been around when waves of pioneers arrived. Then industrialists came along to harness the mighty Columbia, and in 1943, the world’s first full-scale nuclear reactor was established at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation—as part of the Manhattan Project. Today, the river’s dams produce more hydroelectric power than any other North American river. Imagine lashing down the wagon with all your earthly belongings and being among the first to arrive, proving that families could go west by wheel. Nearly 40 years after the Corps of Discovery expedition of 1804, thousands were drawn west by cheap land, patriotism, or the promise of a better life. We’ll bring these events to life as you journey upriver aboard a replica coastal steamer. Travel nearly 1,000 miles—discovering natural wonders, historical landmarks, and amazing human endeavors. Historians, guest experts, onboard living history vignettes, and visits ashore to museums, historic forts, and wineries carry you through time, sharing its varied history and how agriculture and engineering have shaped this vast region.
“The crew was very engaging. Made us feel like part of the family. Food was out of this world. Thanks for making this cruise possible for “ us and showing us such a good time.” — Glenn P., Ontario, Canada Unbeatable.

Columbia & SnaKE RIVERS washington & british columbia
L H
Journey through time and your senses awaken much as they must have for Captain Robert Gray. In 1792, Gray discovered and named the Columbia River after his ship, the Columbia Reviva. As you push off from the Portland dock enjoying champagne and hors d’oeuvres, it is certain your bountiful expedition will have you traveling in greater comfort than your predecessors—who without the aid of modern amenities, undertook long, tough journeys, rumored with hostile Indians, unforgiving country, disease, and dangerous work. This week, impromptu skits by your crew bring historical characters and events to life—further enriching your experience in the region.
Days 2-6 Passing alongside shores of evergreen forests, high desert, and canyons, you’ll cruise upriver transiting eight locks and dams, and centuries of history—filled with colorful stories of hardships and triumphs. Learn the legend of a beautiful Indian maiden—the winter spirit of a towering waterfall, and about the Nez Perce and their 1805 encounter with Lewis & Clark. Cruise the 80-mile long Columbia River Gorge, cutting through the Cascade Mountains and past hillsides of the huge wind turbines, orchards, vineyards, and wheat fields that have helped shape the land. As you jet boat into Hells Canyon, keep watch for 7,000-year-old Indian petroglyphs and up vertical cliffs for bighorn sheep and golden eagles. Early American history unfolds in a pioneer village, the European history stands sentry in a castle-like chateau, and modern history exposes the vibrant flavors of this worldclass wine region.
Days 7-8 Near the mouth of the Columbia, step back in time once again at Fort Clatsop, the Corps of Discovery’s last encampment; stroll the quaint streets of Victorian Astoria; and explore the river’s nautical history at the Columbia River
Maritime Museum. Enjoy the evening’s Farewell Dinner and relive your week through photos and storytelling. Bid adieu in the morning before your Portland airport transfer.
HERITAGE ADVENTURES include – All onboard meals; fine wine, premium spirits and microbrews;
exclusive roundtrip transfers and baggage handling between airport/vessel; port fees and taxes; interpretive shore visits and onboard presentations; entry fees to national parks, museums, and historical venues; winery tour and tasting; wellness program: hot tub, sauna, fitness equipment, yoga, and a complimentary massage

Coastal Washington & British Columbia Natural Wonders and Breathtaking Wildlife Slip into timelessness and sail through an intricate network of islands (many uninhabited), inlets, and passages sure to stir any modern-day explorer. The Salish Sea—a name officially approved by the Canadian and United States governments in 2009—stretches the coastal waters from Puget Sound in the south, through Washington’s San Juan Islands, the Gulf Islands and Vancouver Island of British Columbia, to the Strait of Georgia in the north. Charted by Captain George Vancouver in the 1790s, this vast archipelago has been an important trade route to the indigenous peoples of the region for thousands of years. Choose from two Styles of Adventure in these coastal waters. On an Active Adventure you’ll stay within the boundaries of Washington State exploring the wilderness surrounding the Olympic Mountains; kayaking, hiking, and skiffing among the San Juan Islands and in glacial fjords; seeking wildlife and uncovering Native cultures of the Pacific Northwest. Opt for an inclusive Luxury Adventure and you’ll sail into a yachters’ paradise on both sides of the border—witness the stunning Princess Louisa Inlet, visit a charming seaside town and British-influenced Victoria, enjoy High Tea in a garden, and take in nature’s wonders from a kayak or skiff. Whichever your choice, you’ll witness Mother Nature’s role in creating some of the most dramatic scenery along coastal Washington and British Columbia.
“Just finished my second Un-Cruise with this company in as many years. I can’t say enough about the crew, the scenery, and the experience. Already planning a third trip for 2014!” — Scarlett H., McCalla, Australia Unspoiled.

A wild world of natural wonder. The Coast Salish have always been canoe people, and excellent seamen, and Vision Quest journeys were frequent for them. Guided by the natural world, you’ll join them in spirit as you sail from Seattle—exploring the islands, hiking in rainforest and up mountains, and paddling untold waterways of Puget Sound. Seattle’s namesake, Chief Sealth, never had it so good. Settle in, enjoy the scenery, and buckle down for your week of adventure.
Days 2-6 We’re a tad partial to the neighborhood and can’t wait to show it off! Tucked away, you’ll wake up in some of the quietest reaches of the Sound—surrounded by old growth forest, intertidal wetlands, and rocky outcroppings. When your captain pulls anchor and guides you through the archipelago, keep watch for gray whales, orcas, seals and sea lions, tufted puffins, rhinoceros auklets, and resident bald eagles. There’ll be other excellent birding opportunities near Deception Pass and in Quilcene Bay, where a local family also treats you to a home-grown oyster and clam tasting. Days of play will have you hiking in the Olympic Range and to the top of Mt. Constitution for stunning panoramic views; uncovering above and below the surface at Lopez and Orcas Islands; and unlocking history in Friday Harbor and the traditions of local native cultures in Port Townsend. It’s a feast for the soul and natureoriented adventure seekers.
Days 7-8 For your final treat of the week, you’ll anchor at picturesque Sucia Island. Explore the intertidal zone, hike across the island, and kayak in a protected bay accompanied by your expert expedition team. And if Mother Nature cooperates, there might even be a barbecue ashore.
Wrap up the evening with a slideshow highlighting your week’s adventures. After your final breakfast aboard, say goodbye to newfound friends and disembark at Fishermen’s Terminal for your transfer to the Seattle airport.
ACTIVE ADVENTURES include – All onboard meals; exclusive transfers and baggage handling between airport/vessel; entry fees to national parks/preserves; most from-the-vessel adventure activities and equipment; wellness program: hot tub, sauna, fitness equipment, and yoga

Unleash your inner explorer and settle into the rhythm of the Salish Sea—as your yacht sails northward for Canada from Seattle’s Puget Sound. When Captain George Vancouver first sailed through, back in the 1790s, these waters had not yet been charted. In fact, he named nearly every island, mountain, waterway, and point of land in sight. And thanks to him, your captain and crew know just where they’re going, leaving more time for sharing the area’s wildlife and wonders.
Days 2-6 On the southern tip of British Columbia’s Vancouver Island sits Victoria. Take time to browse quaint shops, stop by the elegant Empress Hotel, or visit one of the garden city’s many museums. Later, take in High Tea at famed Butchart Gardens and leisurely stroll its 52 acres of botanical wonder. Your voyage continues in the Strait of Georgia, sailing along Canada’s Sunshine Coast to the Harmony Islands; along the intricate passages of the Gulf Islands; and through the Malibu Rapids to stunning Princess Louisa Inlet, walled in by 5,000-foot nearvertical mountains. By day you’ll anchor in sheltered bays for kayaking, exploring by skiff, or hiking ashore, and by night, nestle into a remote anchorage. Wildlife flourishes where evergreen forests fall steeply to the shore—orca whales search for salmon, seals and sea lions lounge on rocky islets, and eagles soar overhead. Land and sea explorations await—and it’ll be a treat—wherever the tides take you.
Days 7-8 The week closes as you, once again, sail over the border and back to the dramatic scenery of Washington’s San Juan Islands—an archipelago of 172 islands and rocky islets. Spend your last day with a visit to tiny Friday Harbor and The Whale Museum, searching for orca, and
“gunkholing,” or exploring as the land lubbers say. A festive Captain’s Farewell Dinner and a picturesque recap of the week from your expedition leader cap off your last evening. Your journey ends with a morning transfer to the Seattle airport.

Our Affiliations Alaska Geographic
Responsible Travel Communities and the Environment Traveling by small vessels enables us to get up close to nature and wildlife in some of the most scenic areas of the world. While delivering exceptional access to these areas, we realize our presence has an impact. We look for ways to lessen our footprint on the environment. From replacing engines for more efficient models to making arrangements in each port for recycling, and proper disposal of waste, and our teams on board and ashore work together to operate responsibly. A key part of operating a responsible business is ensuring we leave a positive impact on the communities we visit. This core value is part of our initial itinerary planning on through to operations management and office practices. Whether it’s a cruise donation to an organization for a fundraising effort or partnering with locals for tours, we look for ways to share the wealth and enrich the lives of those we meet. Responsible Actions: u Purchase local food and supplies u Partner with local people for cultural tours / presentations u Follow “Leave No Trace” practices u Purchase supplies with less packaging to reduce waste u Recycle u Testing new systems to reduce engine emissions, increase fuel efficiency u Eco-friendly bath amenities on board in refillable containers u Reusable water bottles in each cabin for guest use; no bottled water sold on board u Donate to local organizations in areas where we operate u Meet or exceed waste water treatment requirements
