Unit Outline

One function of Graphic Design is to synchronise and co-ordinate different kinds or materials and content in order to communicate a coherent and comprehensible flow of information. This unit explores ways of constructing systems of rules, scripts, specifications and templates to constrain and focus graphic expression. Such as visual systems can range from typographic grids, which can be designed in such a way to permit a designer to produce a wide variety of layouts, to a tightly defined system of rules that generates graphic outcomes independent of any further engagement by a designer. Visual systems often correspond to, and represent other systems that are seen to exist in organisations or texts; therefore this unit will also explore ways in which graphic systems map to other kinds of systems.

Visual Synthesis For this project you are required to create a portrait of the AUB campus. You will be working in small groups to map, analyse and recreate the data systems of your surroundings within a set of synthesised visual systems. Collaboration with Sarah Harrison, Harry Murr, Gemma Brett and Ethan Huang

Starting idea Collecting datas of the number of smokers in different zones of the campus and displaying smoke from different zones of the campus at different times. The higher amount of smokers, the bigger extraction of smoke would be displayed. I felt that this concept was weak and unsatisfying so I carried on further research. The research led me to heat signatures, which interested me and had clear visuals on taking it further.

Concept 1: Different buildings showing heat signatures, depending on how many people there are in each building at 3 different times of the day; 9am, 1pm, 5pm Plan: Find out the temperature of the building at the times set. Outcome: Make an animation of building changing height according to the temperatures.

Page 6 and 7 research shows the scientific method of displaying the heat records, where as this page shows the contemporary method. What I have extracted from these research is that the colours that are used and the contemporary method of displaying these datas.

Initial sketch of concept 1 Sketch below is the visual of first concept showing the snapshot of before and after. The building changes its height when the heat temperature goes up and down. Buildings will be shown in heat signature coded colours.

After introducing my concept to the rest of the group, not everyone was completely satisfied. So what we did was changed our context to human behaviour focusing on their interaction and emotions. We wanted this to be interactive with the audience. After sitting in the cafeteria, we noticed that a lot of people were on their phone, waving and hugging, so we decided to do a primary research on interactions between the pupils in the campus. Plan of action: 1) Split the groups and go to the 3 commonly used zone in the campus. Collect data of how a person interacts or is interacting with others. 2) Select colours representing each interaction. Eg. Hug: yellow etc. 3) Create initial visuals of how you want the datas to be seen as a final outcome.

Left Primary research data

The Initial idea of our second concept displaying the datas, inspired by the research I had done for the first concept. The coloured dots represents the interactions, the dots could be installed as small led lights on a template in a shape of the campus map, the lights would change at 4 different times (morning/lunch/evening). Developments for this idea would be to collect datas for more than just 4 times so that the changing of the coloured lights would be more vibrant and engaging.

Final idea - Postcards At the group meeting when discussing the initial designs, the postcard idea was the strongest. This concept was agreed by the group to be interactive and this idea meets that requirement. The interactive activity about the postcard is that we hand out the blank postcards to random pupils to write a message to last person they hugged, kissed, called etc.

22 Final design exhibitioned in a glass box. What we have done is received people messages and kept it sealed in a box. The reason why it is displayed inside a box is because postcards are commonly used to send to a specific person with a message meaning it is private.

Evaluation This brief has taught me how to look within something that cannot be seen, how something can be extracted etc. The project was successful according to what we had aimed. We extracted something personal that made the audience interested. From the feedback we received, it engaged the viewers effectively and the most hands on concept compared to the rest.

However there are always weaknesses and areas for improvement. If I had to develop this piece further I would let the audience or the public write their message towards someone and hang it on the display, this would make the piece more interactive. The other feedback we received was if the colour of the postcard meant more than just the percentage, I would make the colour represent the emotion of the sender. There were other various ways to hang the postcard for display but the displaying it in the glass box expressed the respect towards privacy.

Idea generation Cinema Concept: Glow up seat rows and numbers. This ensures customers to find their seats quickly.

Solution

Problem

Screen to scan the ticket when you enter the screening room. After the ticket is scanned the specified seat on the ticket will glow up. Each seat projects its seat number.

It could form a queue when each customers are scanning their tickets on the screen, which could lead to delays and form complaints.

All seats in one row light up in one colour so less numbers are used to identify the seats. (Right)

Is it necessary to do this and is it important than any other things in the world? Would the company invest millions on this concept for their cinema?

Second idea Research From the feedback we received on our first concept, it was unlikely that it will be successful and far too costly to run from the clients perspective. However we decided to go back to our first brainstorm and pick another idea, which is Getting to different courses; using colour coded on the ground. These photographs from the secondary research has influenced us in using graphical elements on the ground to get from point A-B. Plan of action: 1) Find a location where people find it difficult to locate 2) Primary research (explore, photographs)

The Museum of Plastic - MODIP is located in the university campus. The concept was strong and satisfying according to the feedback we received. However the location we had picked was pulling the concept down since most of our projects had been inside the university surrounding. Something that has not been done before would be the bonus for the concept. Taking it outside the university campus, we decided to pick the coastal location, Roberts Cotes museum, a museum and an art gallery. We picked this location because it is hardly recognised and does not seem to get lot of visitors. It is situated on the cliff of the Bournemouth beach, and the access is hidden and not a lot advertisement has been created by the museum.

Robert Cotes Museum In 1901, Merton Russell-Cotes gave his wife Annie a dream house on a cliff-top, overlooking the sea. It was an extraordinary, extravagant birthday present – lavish, splendid, and with a touch of fantasy. They filled this exotic seaside villa with beautiful objects from their travels across the world, and lined the walls with a remarkable collection of British art, creating a unique atmosphere in a most dramatic setting. A home, an art gallery, and a museum. Then they sealed it in time, and gave it to the future.

They travelled extensively visiting Australasia, America, India, the Near East, Egypt, the Pacific Islands and Japan, collecting artwork and souvenirs. The house reflects all these international decorative styles alongside contemporary Victorian design. The interiors provide a context for their extensive collections of artefacts, furnishings, sculpture and paintings. Completed in 1901, East Cliff Hall was one of the last Victorian villas to be built in the town.

39 After exploring the area of the museum, I have brainstormed the problems of the museum that needs improving for effective wayfinding. This has helped me to come up with number of solutions.

Initial Ideas Making the public interact was my main focus. From the photographs I took, I started visualising ideas on it. This concept involves illustrations of footsteps on the ground leading towards the museum. To make the journey fun, facts about the museum, environment, about health could be included or also how many calories you might burn if you walk this way etc. The illustrations on the ground could have numerical value of steps written on it to challenge the public in to getting to the destination.


42 This idea generated from the small drawings done by school kids, which is displayed on the wall near the pier of Bournemouth. My idea here is to have number of line drawings in different shapes and sizes, which is then left for the public to colour on it, this drawings will start from the pier and finish outside the museum. These drawings will be sponsored or advertised by the museum so that not only the people getting involved in drawing but also the people walking by will also notice the involvement on this activity.

The Russell-Cotes offers learning experience for young people, families and adults, from a range of activities so that everyone can engage with the house and collections, from workshops and guided tours, to self-led visits.

This research led us to ‘The Big Draw’, a campaign for drawing open to everyone. The campaign raises the profile of drawing as a tool for thought, creativity, social and cultural engagement. It has created a new regard for the power of drawing to help people see, think, invent and take action. Its long-term ambition is to change the way drawing is perceived by educationalists and the public. This has won support from leading practitioners in the creative industries and in art, architecture and design colleges, signalling an overdue realisation that drawing is fundamental to the training of students in these disciplines. The Campaign takes a wider view. It sees drawing as a basic human skill useful in all walks of life. The Campaign’s work will finish when the words ‘I can’t draw’ are dropped from our vocabulary.

Idea Development Using the big draw campaign for the wayfinding to the museum seemed appropriate as it promotes the drawing campaign and also the system for wayfinding. The sculptures around the coastal railings led us to the idea of using the collections of the museum as a part of wayfinding. Concept: Involve the public to draw on the templates of the collections found in the museum, the drawing templates will be placed on the ground or the wall leading towards the museum. A reward given if the drawings are completed, to be collected from the museum. Plan of action: 1) Manually pick the items from the museum you want to use as a template for the drawings. 2) Find a starting location and the spot for the rest of the templates to be placed.

50 To make sure people follow the drawing route, we came up with the idea of having graphic coloured trails, inspired from the second idea we came up with. We decided to use the colour orange, as that was our theme colour but mainly because it is a highly visible colour and easy to catch attention.

Evaluation From this project I have learnt to not get restricted to one idea, because at one point we were struggling to get the concept working, then that is where we found The Big Draw campaign, which led us to the idea of doing a drawing activity. Our final idea was simple but yet successful. The strength of this project was that it was interactive, which was the main aim of the brief, to lead the audience to a destination. What the project was lacking was the aesthetic and the illustrations of the template were needed to be improved. Any improvements for this project would be to make the logo on the templates smaller because it was taking up large amount of space resulting in less space to draw. Other improvements would be advertising photographs of the collections in the museum displayed outside, giving the public a rough idea whats inside. During the visit to the museum, the garden in front of the entrance was very well maintained, my main focus would be to make the garden aware to public, which will then lead them towards the museum.

58 What are the rules of typography and are they to be broken? Do’s and Dont’s abound and all graphic designers have their own pet hates in the typography. Create a spread featuring one particular issue of typography and its results.

CAP HEADLINES To improve the readability and visibility of the capital headlines the guidelines are as follows; more space needed between letters which fill out their own rectangle i.e. E, H, M and N. Less space is needed between rounded letter i.e. O, C, G, and Q or between letters which contain large spaces within their rectangles.

Developments

The two types of dots represents the rules for a successful Cap Headlines. The words Digital systems is picked without definite aim, which made this piece weak.

What I am aiming to pursue here is get two identical words and differentiate it from the good and the bad. In this design, I have restricted myself from using the lines to show the meaning of the dots, but place each dots representing its meaning on the side.

I tried to experiment with different words relating to the subject and have placed the meaning of the dots on the same sides, so it is easily readable.

I decided to shorten the Capital - Cap as it is easily understandable as I felt that it is starting to look very busy. The left design shows where it needs to be changed and the on right is what the final would look like.


61 I went back to sketching the layout of the spread since I was not getting a lot of positive feedbacks, so had to make some improvements. I rethought of the word going across the page because it was very boring and did not express the meaning.


62 These two final words expressed the meaning very well so decided to experiment both on the layout and pick what is the most effective and visually pleasing.

Evaluation What I have achieved from this task is that there isn’t just a visually pleasing tyography but the importance of readability and how much tiny space between letters makes a big impact. I have learnt various typographical meanings and the importance of knowing the rules as a designer.

Subvert Analyse and deconstruct the visual system of an existing brand. Re-purpose the underlying visual system to produce an outcome that subverts or extends the brands key message.


70 One of my previous projects was about Apple, where I came to find out about how the company is using student labour to create their products. As the number one supplier to Apple and manufacturer for a host of other consumer-electronics firms, Foxconn is one of the largest employers in China. The company estimated that up to 150,000 workforce were students. More than 28,000 were estimated to be interning for Apple alone. Due to this I wanted to express my emotions by subverting them and how they must be going through everyday working in the factory. On the right, I started brainstorming on how to visualise this concept of salve labour.

This mock-up shows someone being handcuffed and a glamorous iPhone is shown where public are brainwashed into thinking it is the key to freedom, happiness. But I decided not to take this concept further because I had come up better concept with a different idea I had, also considering it is favourite brand and what they were doing was rather unusual and unique.

74 Previous Page G-Star Raw campaign

RAW FOR THE OCEANS is a collaborative project with G-Star and Bionic yarn that takes ocean plastic and transforms into Denim.

Bionic transforms fibres made from the recycled plastic into durable textiles. Mission: Save as many animals as possible by cleaning off plastic from coastlines and oceans. Keep plastic in use and recycle plastic trash into upcycled production materials.

G-Star RAW is a Dutch designer clothing company that, founded in Amsterdam in 1989, produces urban clothing. The brand specializes in making raw denim- unwashed, untreated denim. G-Star is influenced by military clothing. Inspirations of their designs come from vintage military apparel from around the world. Some examples include special pockets constructions and the use of trims.

76 What made me interested in this project is the creation of something innovative from a good cause also, because it has never been done before. Saving animals, aquatic creatures, keeping the ocean clean and reusing the materials is something I would considerably support. Below figure shows the cycle of what the company’s mission is.

78 Illustrations of octopus are used to promote the G-Star collection. Octopus were portrayed as the machines used to clean the plastics of the ocean. These illustrations were what caught my attention and fits well in the context. Plan of action: Create a way to promote to clean the ocean. Think of what G-Star have used to promote the cause and their innovation.

Final Design What I have extracted from the research are the companies involved to promote this cause, how much plastics are left in the ocean today and how they make use of plastics collected from the ocean. The final poster I have designed, I decided to stick to the theme they have come up with i.e. colour, illustrations. The reason why I have done is because it gives the audience the general view of what is done with the plastic, how it is reused. It also gives recognition to the company G-Star and Bionic Yarn. I have used a factual information on the centre of the design because that is the main message I want to put across to the audience, with this being read the audience will automatically understand what the poster design is about.

Evaluation Through this project I have achieved in re-creating someone’s idea with a positive impact. The reason why I have done this is because I wanted to support the good cause these two companies were doing by working together. Through this experience I have definitely learnt to think about environment, eco-friendly and thinking ethically as a designer. My strengths were that I aware of this project and had a deep knowledge what this campaign was and its impact. Through the feedback I received on my design was good use of colour and illustrations, but the banner placement needed improvement, or perhaps plays around with the placement. For the audience there was not any explanation of the company involved within the campaign, which I what I need to improve on. It felt that the illustration was cluttered, so I need to re-think about placing them carefully with the text. What I need to do is introduce more information on the campaign and the company’s mission statement, what their plan is.

Visual Crypsis is a strategy within the process of camouflage where a system merges with the surrounding environment.

Reading the brief the three words collide, camouflage and interact caught our attention, so we decided to pick one of the words and explore its means. We started brainstorming the word camouflage because we could easily visualise various ideas.

From the main keywords we decided to focus on the word Disperse, Fade, Distant and Close, we carried out secondary research, which resulted us with an artist called Julius Popp, whose work is similar to the results we received from the research.

Julius Popp Julius Popp is an artist based in Leipzig. Popp was born in Nuremberg. His work often uses technology, resulting in interdisciplinary ventures which reach across the boundaries of art and science.


92 How the text is seen in a short glance and is dissappeared right away is what made me curious. We liked the fact that he is using technology with typography and natural element together, which influenced us to research into something natural (environmental) with typography.

Project Bit.fall Popp’s work sits on the boundary between art and science. In Bit.Fall (2005) a machine releases droplets of water from 320 nozzles controlled by computer software and electromagnetic valves. As the droplets fall, word and images selected from the internet are formed, each only visible for no more than a second. Liquid is pumped into a 45 metre long tube. Regulated by software designed by Popp the liquid is dispersed in a pattern which forms readable values at only certain points before it disperses into chaos again.

95 Mock up What things exist today that are worked by wind ? Wind Turbine Wind Chimes Wind Surfing

Discussing what sort things exist today that involved wind. We decided to take the Wind Chimes further and develop it with our idea. Main focus of the brief is to merge two elements together and find a crypsis. For this idea, the crypsis was the text being obscured, when the wind blows while it is hanging like a wind chime. Location: Bournemouth, Beach Target Audience: Male, Female


96 The concept was working and the crypsis but it was lacking the meaning of this idea; why we are doing this, is this doing any cause etc. So we went back to our two topics we picked to merge together. We focused towards environmental issues such as global warming.

Secondary Research Sea Level rise campaign by Surfrider foundation. The Surfrider Foundation USA is a non-profit environmental organization that works to protect and preserve the world’s oceans, waves, and beaches. The Surfrider Foundation largely focuses its work on such issues as water quality, beach access, beach and surf spot preservation, and sustaining marine and coastal ecosystems. What I like about this artwork is the usage of ice as a sculpture of an atomic bomb, which sends a message across very clearly, that the sea level is rising due to the melting of ice.

Through this idea we came up with two ideas: Create a transparent 3D typography piece, with the top open where the cubes of ice will be placed. Ice will eventually melt filling the hollow 3D type with water. Create a typographical sculpture, a word relating to the rising of the sea level. Plan of action: 1) Create initial sketches of how you want to visualise this concept. 2) Find out how you can make a typographical ice sculpture 3) The word you want to use as a message 4) Find out if there is any limitation to the size of the text for production. 5) Context- Location

First Initial idea Hollow 3D typography made out of transparent PVC plastic for the water to fill in, ice will eventually melt filling the tube, and the water filling in the tube will be the crypsis. Going simply with saying Sea and water filling up would express the word levels.

Second idea mock up We both preferred this idea because it was experimental and ambitious. We have changed the text into LEVELS because it expresses the fact that the level of water is not the same but increasing every year. We made the mock up so that we could find out any overcoming problems.

Production We laser cut the same letter x3 times, so that it is thick enough to stand on the ground without any support. Evo-Stick Adhesive glue was used to stick each wood together. Wood was left for half hour to dry and ready to make the mould on the vacuum forming.

Vacuum Forming Here is the process of the wood being vaccum formed on to a plastic sheet. We vaccum formed all letters twice so we can both freeze the water on the mould just incase one breaks apart.

Mould Outcome After the mould has been set, here is the result of the ice after being left in the freezer overnight. The ice was formed accurately on the tight corners and edges; also it was easy to take it out of the mould.

Final Outcome The effect of having broken ice expresses the iceberg falling apart due to temperature rise and the ice being washed away and blending it in its form.

Evaluation This is the brief we really struggled on eventually got back on track after numerous attempts of generating ideas. I have achieved in creating a successful crypsis concept, because I had never worked in a similar brief before, did not have a clear understanding of the meaning of the crypsis. Through my experience in this project, I have learnt how a problem with one idea leads to another working idea. This will be a lesson for me to focus at a problem too, where that problem can lead you to something successful. My strengths on this project was my enthusiasm towards making sculptures or installations, which is what I enjoy the most doing. Weakness for this project was the amount of time we had to complete it. However I was not completely satisfied with the final piece because of the aim I had was much different and better than a poster. The feedback we received had left us with few improvements; one being the text not communicating a bigger message within such large environment, the context needed tiny improvement. What I would do to develop the final piece is change the text of the sculpture into ‘We are not doing enough’, which has a effective message than just Levels. So although the text is small compared to the environment but the message it is sending is communicated very effectively. What also I would do is do a Time motion video of a ice being melted and merging in the water, which is where the crypsis come to work once the ice is dissolved into water from its solid form.

118 Tomato works as a flat company, no pyramid or hierarchical basis like other large companies. Small studio with very relaxed and homely atmosphere. What do you think about Design? There is an artist and there is Design, artist asks question but does not give answers, design provides the sotlution. How many projects do you have running at the same time? We balance up to 10 projects at a time but ideally would be 6. The reason we do this is because most times you experience problems with one project and that problem could be a solution for another one. Is there a story behind the company name Tomato, why you picked that? Mainly because of the sound of it, at start it was bit odd but eventually it started to blend in, it became sort of like a culture. Do you approach companies? We do approach companies but only sometimes. Companies approach us because of our method of working. We do a lot of personal work on the side., without that there would not be a studio, personal work is the charm. For example: Typography for Blueprint 330 magazine was a personal work, then then the company approached us if they could use our typography. Is there certain aspects you don’t work on? We stay away from politics, smoking.

Evaluation Going for an industry visit was definitely knowledgeable and a great experience. I have always thought the industry or a studio would be very intimidating but no, the visit to the tomato studio was very relaxed and the atmosphere within the studio was very homely. Understanding how the professionals practise and working with clients, gave me an experience for future preference. Finding out the amount of projects they handle at once was shocking compared to us finding it difficult to cope 2 projects at a time. What I have learnt from the trip is that you don’t need a well-known company to work for or a big team to practise your work/meet client’s requirement. It can be done anywhere as long as you have a working space. Socialising and Networking seems to be the big focus on an everyday basis. Most importantly always keep creating your own personal work, that is what attracts the clients.

Starting the design without the plan took me longer, until I put it aside and started to do a rough flat plan. Doing the flat plan has made my pace much quicker. It gave me visuals of roughly how I want every each page to be designed and time to develop.

Grid System/Colour System I have set up my document as a 4 column grid, this is to give the texts more space and make it more visible. I have used orange as my theme colour and dark grey as the main text.

Unit Evaluation In this unit I have achieved new experiences, targets and struggles that has led me to many open doors, where I have achieved success. This unit has involved plenty of group work, where I have learnt a lot from my peers, which will bring positive impact to the way I work and think in future. Witnessing the confidence in others while working has definitely helped me on areas I lack. This unit has made me realise the deeper the meaning is behind the concept the more it is likely to gain success, and has taught me the system of thinking such as on generating ideas and getting them across. More independent projects in the unit would have been better as it would bring the confidence and will prepare ourselves for the industry.
