Welcome to another issue of

Quantum Health magazine!

This is an exciting issue! Dr Larry Dossey has brought out a book called the Science of Premonitions and was able to talk to us about this subject, which I know is something that fascinates most people, since it seems that most people have had an unexplained experience of one sort or another. Although it seems that there are no real answers to everything in life, it’s interesting to know that there is a whole lot of research (scientific) into this subject. This interview gives an insight into the work that is being carried out to help us understand premonitions and so can help us avoid danger and maximise opportunities in our day to day lives.

Whilst gathering articles and editorial for the magazine, I have also been involved in helping Harry Massey with his new film, Mastering the Matrix, which is a documentary film highlighting transformation and how this can motivate and inspire viewers to examine their own lives and begin the journey of personal transformation, so that they too can reach out to make meaningful contributions to the world. Interesting that world leaders and science can be so interlinked...

We have our usual panel of writers offering a great mix of articles; Arielle Essex has written about sensory awareness, Rupert Sheldrake has been kind enough to give us a lengthy piece about morphic fields, which is a complex subject and so relevant to, well, everything. Joan Parisi Wilcox talks about exploring the scientific and philosophical concepts of time and space and Yulyia Cohen has a great piece on widening the lens, or looking into the future. Thornton Streeter has an article on the value of thermal screening, and has noted that it’s Breast Cancer Awareness month and how this type of safe screening can be a valuable resource.

I hope you enjoy this issue!

At the top of this page is a video link with a message to you all. This is the start of the new interactive format which will offer you more information.

We have widened our audience somewhat, and because of this I would like to ask that if you have a few spare minutes you could please send me an email with a few details about yourselves; who you are, where you’re from, your profession, what you like to read about, what you don’t see here that would interest you and any other ideas you may have to make this, your magazine, better. The first 20 who respond will get a free Living Matrix DVD! Please send your responses to: trina@quantumhealthmagazine.com with Living Matrix as the subject. Quantum Health 3

An interview with Larry Dossey MD, author of The Science of Premonitions By Trina Hart 6 Quantum Health

L

arry Dossey MD took time out from his busy schedule to talk about his new book, The Science of Premonitions. This distinguished Texas physician, deeply rooted in the scientific world, has become an internationally influential advocate of the role of the mind in health and the role of spirituality in healthcare. Bringing the experience of a practicing internist and the soul of a poet to the discourse, Larry Dossey offers panoramic insight into the nature and the future of medicine.

Q

In your new book, The Science of Premonitions, you have highlighted a lot of experiences that have been documented, which make for fascinating reading, and probably resonate with many. My question though is, how do you know that you are having a premonition rather than just a thought? Is it more intuitive, i.e. your feelings alert you to react to a vision, dream or other sign that something may be happening in the future? LD There are several criteria that help us distinguish valid premonitions from mere fantasies: Vividness. Premonitions that prove valid generally have a special quality — numinous, “lit up from the inside,” “in italics,” are terms people use to describe them. Recurrence. If they occur repeatedly, as if clamouring for attention. If they are shared. If, for example, a husband and wife have identical dreams without cuing each other they are doing so. If they are associated with physical symptoms (many cases in my book are like this), such as the OB-GYN physician who gets bodily pains before his patients deliver.

Q

Do you think that some people attract premonitions and so are more susceptible to having premonitions than others? You mention in your book that incidents of premonitions seem quite high in

for example hospitals, where people are highly charged emotionally, or perhaps where parents have a strong bond with an infant. LD Absolutely. Compassion, caring, and love seem to catalyse premonitions – so it is not surprising they occur often in hospitals and between mothers and children. In addition, there are prodigies where premonitions are concerned. This is not surprising, because prodigies exist in nearly every field of human endeavour – music, art, maths, athletics, etc.

Q

Many people have repetitive dreams; I do, and know many others who do. Could this occurrence indicate some sort of insight really being hammered home? I think what I mean here is that if you don’t pay attention to the first dream (that may well be a premonition), do you think the subconscious delivers the message repeatedly until you decide to try to make sense of it? LD I agree. Repetitive, recurrent dreams should be taken seriously, particularly if they have other criteria for validity, as mentioned above: vividness, shared, associated with physical symptoms, etc. I do want to clarify, however, that dreams are only one avenue for premonitions. They occur commonly during the waking state – though they are often not called premonitions but hunches, intuition or gut feelings.

Q

Have you known of signs that are common amongst a group of people, or instances of mass premonitions perhaps in the case of a major event such as 9/11? LD “Group” premonitions do indeed occur. In the book I relate a sensational example in which 15 choir members at a small church in Beatrice, Nebraska, all stayed home the night the church exploded. None of them had a conscious clue, however, that a disaster would occur; it seemed to be an unconscious decision not to attend church that night. Which brings up an important point: we can act on premonitions unconsciously; only later do we comprehend the reason why – as in cancelling travel plans the day of a plane Quantum Health 7

Quantum

HEALTH

or train crash, simply because it “did not feel right” to travel that day. See the experiment by Ed Cox in the book, in which the occupancy rates on the day of train crashes were always lower than on non-crash days – although people were rarely aware of trouble ahead. I think unconscious premonitions are very important; we don’t get into arguments with ourselves about whether we should follow the nudge, we just do it, which is much more efficient than trying to reason through the matter.

Radin’s “presentiment” experiments in the book, in which people unconsciously register physical changes in the body prior to the occurrence of stressful events). The fact that this evidence exists makes it highly unlikely that “it’s all coincidence.” The odds against chance in these studies are staggering. And the presentiment studies are only one line of evidence. Another is the impressive on-line evidence from precognitive tests, such as those at www.gotpsi.org, which I discuss in the book.

Do you think it’s possible to learn to have premonitions, as it could be really useful in the way that remote viewing can be put to good use?

Q

If premonitions happen, and let’s assume they do, does that mean that the events happening in the future are fixed events?

Yes. Although the talent is widespread, it can be cultivated. How? The most effective way is to cultivate a meditation practice or a method whereby one opens up to the messages from the unconscious mind. Meditation sensitises one to subtle messages and makes one more premonition-prone. Another method is to keep a dream diary. People who do so generally report more frequent dream premonitions that turn out to be valid. Another helpful technique is affirmations – simply affirming in one’s life that one wishes to open more fully to this domain of knowing. The point: although we cannot manipulate and control premonitions, we can set the stage for them and invite them into our life. Premonitions “do” us; we don’t “do” them.

LD No, not necessarily. Premonitions, in my opinion, alert us to what is statistically likely to happen. But the future is not written in stone and fixed. People can take action in the present to modify future events. The opening story in the book about Amanda, who dreamed the chandelier would fall onto her baby’s crib, took action by removing the baby from the crib, although the chandelier did fall at the moment she dreamed about. Her action in the present prevent injury or death to the child. Some events, of course, are more easily modified than others. Premonitions of natural disasters – earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, etc. – are not easily changed; but, knowing they may happen, one can remove oneself from danger, although one does not change the future event. This is rather like changing one’s travel plans because of an intuition that the plane or train will crash.

Q

What’s the difference between a premonition and a coincidence, particularly if it’s just a one-off event? And do you think that intention could play a major role in premonitions? Intention can increase the frequency and accuracy of premonitions, as I just mentioned. There may not be a way of perfectly distinguishing a premonition from a coincidence. Indeed, this is the perennial rebuttal from sceptics, who claim it’s all coincidence. This is unlikely, however, because of the solid scientific evidence, now abundant and replicated in labs around the world in dozens of experiments, that people can know future events before they take place (see Dean 8 Quantum Health

Q

Q

Now for the science. What experiments do you think hold up the strongest to support premonitions? As mentioned above, there are two categories of experiments that have been recently done which offer, in my judgment, compelling evidence: the presentiment experiments, in which people’s bodies register stress-related changes prior to the appearance on a computer screen of a particular type of image, even before the computer has randomly selected it on-line precognition tests in

Quantum

HEALTH

Premonitions used to be only about anecdotes and stories; now they are about experimental science as well.

which people can predict the future decisions the computer makes. The odds against chance of these combined studies are billions to one. There are other lines of evidence as well, but these are the two areas I believe are the most compelling. These experiments are very important. Premonitions used to be only about anecdotes and stories; now they are about experimental science as well. The dialogue, the game, has changed. We are entitled now to regard premonitions as a documented feature of our human endowment; they are simply an aspect of who we are – a recognition now based on experimental fact.

Q

Where do you think consciousness comes into premonitions?

LD Premonitions say a lot about the nature of consciousness. They suggest that some aspect of the mind is unrestricted in time: it can gain information from the future. Other evidence suggests consciousness can operate independently of space as well. As I explain in the book, consciousness is nonlocal in space and time. “Nonlocal” is just a fancy word for “infinite.” If we have a nonlocal quality of consciousness, that’s a way of saying we are in some sense infinite in time, or immortal and eternal. This, I believe, is the major contribution premonitions make to human knowledge.

Q

In conclusion, what do you think we can learn from premonitions? Is this something we should all individually cultivate as everyday and ordinary? LD Premonitions are a precious gift. They have survival value, since so many of them alert us to impending dangers, health challenges, and so on, which, if acted on, can help us stay alive. But their main contribution is that they point like an arrow to an infinite, immortal aspect of who we are. They should be seen as ordinary, because that’s what they are, as surveys have repeatedly shown. And they should be taken seriously, because they are about more than anecdote, story, and personal experience: they are about science as well. The experiments affirm that we are not fooling ourselves; the phenomenon is real, it is common, and it is demonstrable in rigorous scientific experiments. Having first met Larry Dossey at the 2010 ISSSEEM Conference earlier in the year, heard him speak, and as a subsequence read his book, I can’t tell you what a delight it was to interview him. When we write about all things to do with the unchartered areas of consciousness and the mind in relation to healing and wellbeing, it can seem a little far-fetched, but to have information that has been researched and had the science aspect studied makes reporting findings much more credible. It’s people like Larry Dossey and his colleagues who make these things happen, and so forge a way forward to bring a holistic approach to medicine to the forefront. Love yourself to stay healthy by Jo Marchant Source: New Scientist

H

aving high self-esteem doesn’t just feel good, it has physical benefits too. It seems that thinking well of ourselves may protect both the heart and immune system. High self-esteem makes us feel safer when faced with threats, which in modern western society tend to be related to social status rather than physical danger. So psychologist Andy Martens from the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand, and his colleagues wondered if this protective effect might go further, and dampen our physiological responses as well. To find out, they carried out a series of experiments involving a total of 184 participants. In one study, participants were given false feedback about their intelligence or personality that was designed to raise or lower their selfesteem. In another, they were asked to rate their natural self-esteem levels each day for two weeks. The team analysed the activity of the participants’ cardiac vagal tone – a measure of how strongly the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) influences the heart.

Fight or flight The PNS acts to slow and calm the heart, in opposition to the “fight or flight” state governed by the sympathetic nervous system. The PNS dampens stress and inflammation, and if underactive can lead to cardiovascular problems and autoimmune disease.

10 Quantum Health

In each experiment, higher self-esteem correlated with higher vagal tone. The effect was relatively small, but Martens and his colleagues say this is the first study to show how a change in selfesteem can lead to an immediate change in physiology, and is an important step towards “filling the gap” between self-esteem and health. Martens suggests that the most reliable way for someone to boost their self-esteem is to surround themselves with supportive friends or family – people who provide convincing positive feedback – rather than, say, trying to think positively. “Low self-esteem means more than just feeling bad,” he says. “It also means the body isn’t functioning in a very healthy way, and this could have serious health implications down the road.” For more information visit: www.newscientist.com

New Transformation Film attracts Global Figureheads H

arry Massey is the Executive Producer of The Living Matrix: The New Science of Health DVD, a documentary that challenges conventional medicine to expand its understanding of human biology, and uncovers evidence-based research in bioenergetic medicine to reveal energy and information fields – not genetics – drive human physiology and biochemistry. Massey has now embarked on the follow-up film, Mastering the Matrix, a full-length documentary film that probes the issues of transformational change and how when one person transforms his or her own life, that person can be a positive change agent for the world. Mastering the Matrix has attracted a great deal of attention including from Richard Branson, who has been approached to appear in the film. His sources have said he is fully behind the concept of the film and is currently in talks with Massey as to how he can be involved. With filmed interviews with Archbishop Desmond Tutu already in the can and interviews lined up with Tom Oliver CEO and founder of the World Peace Festival, this film promises to deliver on many levels. Gandhi said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” This film examines some of the major visionaries and inspirational figures of our times, from scientists to sports stars, from philanthropists to philosophers, from

businesspeople to artists. Every one of them has in their own way overcome challenges and obstacles in their personal lives or field of endeavour to reach the pinnacle of success. To do so they had to shift beliefs, abandon or change self-defeating thoughts and behaviours, take action and persevere. In every case, their transformation was not only personal but also collective, for as they reached their own goals and bettered their own lives, they also shared their gifts with the world—and continue to do so, making major positive social contributions. The goal of Mastering the Matrix is to motivate and inspire viewers to examine their own lives and begin the journey of personal transformation, so that they too can reach out to make meaningful contributions to the world. In addition to the interviews, we will examine belief-change processes and the underlying “nature of reality” as explained by the latest research and theories from science, psychology, philosophy and other fields of inquiry. This film is being written and directed by Harry Massey, who produced the innovative 2009 documentary The Living Matrix: The New Science of Health, and producer/director Giovanni Ulleri, an award-winning documentary filmmaker whose work has been aired on all the major UK and US networks, including the BBC, ITV, Channels 4 and 5, the A&E Channel, National Geographic Channel and the Discovery Channel. Unweaving the cosmic web: Relativity goes large byPedro Ferreira Source: New Scientist

W

e’re on the verge of being able to see the structure of the entire universe. That could help us go beyond Einstein’s masterwork, says Pedro Ferreira As we near the centenary of Einstein’s general theory of relativity, a quiet revolution is under way. A number of groups around the world are attempting to test the validity of general relativity on the scale of the universe. So far the tests are inconclusive, yet they herald a striking shift in the way that Einstein’s theory is perceived. And testing general relativity is rapidly becoming one of the core endeavours for some of the most powerful satellite and ground-based experiments being developed. Einstein’s general theory of relativity has served us well. Yet what if he was off the mark? Don’t get me wrong, the theory is remarkably successful at explaining many different phenomena: it allows us to calculate the orbits of all the planets of the solar system with extraordinary accuracy. It also enables us to work out how light is deflected by the deformed space-time around stars and planets. But could we have taken general relativity too far in attempting to predict the evolution of the universe? It is a striking fact that general relativity has remained unchanged since Einstein first proposed it in 1915. At its heart is our understanding of the force of gravity. Einstein put forward the idea that there is no force of gravity per se. Instead, what

12 Quantum Health

we perceive as gravity results from the geometry of space-time. If we place an object - a planet or a star, or indeed anything with mass - into space, it will deform it. Einstein’s general theory of relativity gives us unique and exact rules for calculating the extent of this deformation. Those same rules are with us today, and we have long been mining them, extracting predictions that range from black holes to the big bang. One of the first predictions to emerge was the notion that the universe is expanding. Distant galaxies are moving away from us, and each other, at speeds of tens or hundreds of thousands of kilometres per second. The expansion of the universe was spectacularly confirmed by Edwin Hubble in 1929 and, since then, ever improving observations have enabled us to unravel the history of the expanding universe with increasing precision. But here’s the rub. If general relativity is correct, it has some explaining to do. That’s because observations seem to indicate that the universe is not just expanding, its expansion is actually accelerating. This is not at odds with relativity: Einstein’s theory suggests that there is something else out there, a “dark” form of energy that is pushing space apart. According to calculations based on the theory, two-thirds of the total energy budget of the universe must be made up of this elusive dark energy. For more information visit: www.newscientist.com

Tuning Your Sensory Awareness by Arielle Essex

E

xtraordinary healers all have one thing in common: heightened sensory awareness. It’s as if they have the ability to tune into a completely different wavelength. They notice things that other people don’t notice. They see what can’t be seen. Their acute senses seem to gather information out of thin air. Imagine being like Sherlock Holmes, noticing tiny flecks of dust, a hair, or mud on the side of someone’s boot and then making an accurate deduction. This attention to detail requires mastering specific skills. Most people overlook such visual clues. To read between the lines, hear behind the words or pick up on voice tones runs the risk of mindreading or projection. Because it’s so easy to make a mistake and get it wrong, many people decide to dismiss such insights as untrustworthy. While children commonly report that they see auras, most adults have learned to stifle such input. The sea of information enveloping and surrounding everyone remains ignored. But could it be possible to regain that awareness? What could expand the ability to see, hear, feel and sense more accurate? What if the senses could be tuned to receive psychic information too? Just like everyone can sing and draw, everyone has

an inbuilt capacity to tune into these energies. It’s just a question of practice. NLP can help to develop these extraordinary senses through practicing special exercises. In fact, true NLP expertise depends on being able to tune into sensory specific energies.

Arielle Essex

One of the first exercises taught on an NLP Training is how to access ‘peripheral vision’. Most people use focal vision most of the time, looking directly at one object at a time. They tend to ignore what’s happening outside of this chosen focus of attention. However, simply shifting the focus of attention has a profound effect. Try this for yourself: just choose a spot to focus on directly in front of you on the horizon and don’t allow your eyes to move. Then raise your hands to the sides and wiggle your fingers. Without moving your eyes, slowly bring your hands backwards until you can barely see the fingers wiggling. What happens? Most people report that as they become more aware of their peripheral field of vision, their hearing also becomes more acute. They also report that they feel calmer and more centred. It’s like all the senses switch up a gear. NLP has found peripheral vision creates the optimum learning state because it allows more information to come Quantum Health 13

Quantum

HEALTH

Body healers develop their sensitivity of touch to feel minute differences, subtle pulses, shifts and changes in the flow of energy.

in through all the sensory channels. It’s also very useful to use peripheral vision when talking to groups. Even when gazing in one direction, it is still possible to pay attention to the opposite side of the room. Remember those teachers at school that seemed to have eyes on the back of their head? Body healers develop their sensitivity of touch to feel minute differences, subtle pulses, shifts and changes in the flow of energy. Spiritual healers probably work with the varying frequencies directly within the Field itself. Psychic surgeons like ‘John of God’ perform operations on the organs in the Field’s blueprint. Distance healers send their energy by intention. And of course, new infoceutical medicines like those of the NES System work on this level too. Now Quantum Physics and Morphogenic Field theory can begin to explain how these energy frequencies resonate and relay this information. Scientist David Robson reports that groups of neurons in the brain oscillate together. These complex vibratory signals, called coherence potentials, become mirrored spontaneously by other groups of neurons. The neurons pick up the activity of the other neurons with astonishing precision, just like what Einstein called ‘spooky action at a distance’, or quantum entanglement. So a smell or taste can trigger a coherence potential in the visual area of the brain, evoking memories of your house or garden from childhood. Similarly, neurons in someone else’s brain could also resonate with the vibrations and tune into the memories. A key element of NLP training, matching and mirroring, amplifies this process. Mirroring seems to be one of the most effective ways to increase the neuron’s ability to vibrate in sync. People who like each other tend to match each other’s body position and movements. Next time you are in a restaurant, just watch a couple who have just fallen in love. They will be sitting 14 Quantum Health

in similar positions, gazing deeply into each other’s eyes and lifting their wine glass with total synchronicity. The intense rapport that is generated contributes greatly to the level of intimacy they enjoy. Contrast this with other couples who sit in silence, gazing stonily in different directions and you’ll easily be able to make accurate intuitive deductions. Most people learn to use mirroring just to increase rapport. However, what’s fascinating is how deeply it allows you to tune into another person’s thinking. With hardly any practice, simply mirroring another person’s body posture, gestures and breathing makes it possible to pick up their internal pictures, thoughts and emotions. Of course, the longer you match and mirror, the greater the ability to tune in. Get good at matching not only a person’s behaviour, but also their beliefs, values, sense of identity and spirituality and you’ll not only be able to predict how they think, but what they’ll do next. People who study NLP are amazed to discover how easy it is to tune into this energy. After practicing a few sensory acuity exercises, a volunteer is invited to sit at the front of the room while the class gazes at the back of his head. A card with a specific scenario is handed to this person to read silently and think about. Without acting it out or giving obvious clues, the person merely focuses on the emotional state of the scene depicted. The class then guesses whether the emotion being felt is positive or negative, and then identifies exactly what emotions the person is feeling. To everyone’s great surprise, their guesses describe the person’s emotional state very accurately, even though they are only looking at the back of the head! It’s like being psychic. This heightened awareness is the difference that makes the difference. Since all incoming sensory information gets processed unconsciously, people are usually not aware of precisely what they see, hear or feel. It has been estimated that over two

Quantum

HEALTH

million bits of information bombard the senses every second. If the brain tried to process all that information, it would be overwhelmed. Even psychic sensations must get interpreted through these same sensory channels. So accessing different realms of information is just like tuning into a different radio channel. NLP teaches how to direct the focus of attention differently to pick up different frequencies. For example, learning how to see the different layers of the Aura is easy when you know how to look. As each sensory awareness exercise is mastered, the ability to tune in and pick up information increases. NLP works with the concept that less than 10% of communication is verbal. Most of the meaning comes across via body language and voice tone. Many studies have revealed that people make up their minds about another person’s message in the first 90 seconds of meeting. Yet most people persist in putting all their attention on the words. Meanwhile, the unconscious mind processes the other information coming in, trying to determine what is really being said. Often there is an incongruence or conflict between the words and the delivery. Which one should be believed? People are like sensitively tuned radio transmitters, unconsciously picking up all the words, voice tones, feelings, and subtle expressions - even what is not being said. People usually react to the unspoken messages more than the words. One of the NLP ‘presuppositions’ is that the meaning of the communication is the response that is elicited. This means that if your communication has been misinterpreted, it’s your responsibility to re-state the message in ways that can be understood by the other person. It’s like speaking their language instead of assuming that your way of expressing yourself is automatically clear. But, if your words inadvertently hid some unconscious message, perhaps there was no misinterpretation. Unresolved feelings, conflicts or stored up resentments creep into the spaces between the best-intentioned words. No one gets away with anything. Honesty and integrity require more than just words. True integrity means the actions, words, thoughts and emotions all match. Rather than just giving lip service to ideals you aspire to, or kidding yourself about good intentions, integrity

requires congruence. NLP teaches how to raise your sensory awareness to notice the signs that indicate whether a person is congruent or not. But the trick is that in order to do this well, you need to have clean, open sensory channels yourself. Your own inner congruence is key. The most evolved and spiritual people usually demonstrate profound humility. They constantly aim to improve themselves. The speed of change happening in the world right now means that it’s crucial to become more conscious and aware. The actions each person chooses to take right now directly affect the very destiny of the planet and the human race. To truly make a difference requires consistent intent, thoughts, words and actions. Every thought you think, every feeling you feel, has profoundly powerful effects on the whole system. How well each person cleans up their act and demonstrates alignment, congruence and integrity affects the whole. Here is where NLP can provide some of the most effective tools for change. © Arielle Essex Arielle works as a specialist healer, coach and trainer combining practical psychology, NLP, hypnosis, nonverbal intelligence, emotional intelligence into her own unique ‘Practical Miracles’ coaching approach. Finding and Developing your Intuition By Sasha Allenby

M Sasha Allenby

y first experience of intuition was quite a dramatic one! At six years old I came into the bedroom of my parents and asked them, quite earnestly, what would happen when the tree at the front of our house fell down today. My concern was that if the tree fell towards the house we would all be squashed, and if it fell the opposite way, onto the railway line, then there would be an accident. My mother quietly reassured me that the tree had stood for almost 100 years and that neither would happen. She ruffled my hair affectionately when I started to obsess about the details! So it came as quite a surprise to everyone (except me of course!), when later that day, the tree that had stood at the front of our house for the best part of a century, did indeed fall down. At the time my mother was near the front of the house, and on hearing the huge crack as it uprooted, she rushed out of the house and ushered to safety the children who were playing under the tree. As a small child, there was no awe or wonder for me in what had occurred. I thanked the tree for falling in the other direction, away from the

16 Quantum Health

house and the railway, and to me the event was no great issue. To the adults in my life, however, it was a completely different story. This was the late 1970s when the film Carrie was all the rage, and as my parents quietly assessed what had happened, I could sense the question of whether the tree had fallen down naturally, or whether their little girl’s words had made it happen. I could sense their fear. In fact, I was sent away for the day while the newspapers came around to photograph the scene and take down the story. On my return I asked my mother “When the newspaper man came, did you tell him I knew it was going to happen?” I already knew the answer. In fact, I was told in seriousness to never mention what had happened to anybody. As the years went by I had more intuitions. But because I was taught to fear them, I pushed them down (along with my emotions). It wasn’t until I started to learn Emotional Freedom Techniques or EFT (a technique that enables you to release stresses and traumas from your body-mind) and became an EFT practitioner, that I started to accept that intuition was a natural and good thing. When I first started out as a practitioner,

How many times have you ‘kicked’ yourself because you had an intuition about something but you didn’t take the time to listen to yourself?

So what is intuition? My work over the past several years with Matrix Reimprinting (a technique that advances EFT by incorporating all the developments in quantum physics and the new sciences) has enabled me to see intuition in a totally new light. In fact these days, I feel pretty much the same way as I did when I first experienced it as a child, that it’s actually nothing special. Because we have largely lost our sense of connection and we see ourselves as separate, when anything occurs to challenge this view, we become threatened and fearful. In actual fact, we are all connected by a unified energy field, and intuition is simply us tuning into the energy field and picking up information that is held in the field. Intuition is what happens when we get the ego out of the way. To me it is our hearts own field (which extends outside of the body) connecting with and being part of the field or Matrix that connects us all, and reading information from the unified energy field. My experience has taught me that we are all born with this same knowing, this same ability, but we loose it when we are condition to be separate. The power of intuition lies within us and is no greater than any of the other powers we have lost in our Western civilisation. There are some practical things that you can do to get back in touch with your intuition. The first is to get your ego out of the way. You may think you are right about something, but intuition 18 Quantum Health

I experienced massive insights and intuitions about my clients, but I had to first rewrite my old programmes and beliefs about intuition before I could put them into practice and help other people.

rarely comes from the head – it is from the heart. Things like meditation, alongside a number of NES Health Infoceuticals, and techniques such as EFT and Matrix Reimprinting, can help you on a journey of personal development that supports you to live in your heart and not in your mind. The other key thing to do with your intuition is to take some time to recognise what you feel in your body when you have an intuition about something. Where is the knowing? And the final thing is to start listening to that ‘knowing’ more often. How many times have you ‘kicked’ yourself because you had an intuition about something but you didn’t take the time to listen to yourself? Here’s to getting out of our heads and listening to our hearts more often. I wish you peace as your journey unfolds. Sasha Allenby is co-author of Matrix Reimprinting Using EFT. t is Breast Cancer Awareness month this October so I thought I would dedicate myself to this subject today. It is a great opportunity for quantum healthcare to provide new safer more precise medical technology, that can noninvasively identify health concerns at such an early stage that they can be dealt with much easier and with a much higher success rate.

Figure 1: Max 110 Medical Thermal Imaging Camera (SafeScan, Inc.)

Figure 2: Cardiovascular overlay illustrates that inflammation is present in the carotid artery - an early indicator for heart disease.

Medical thermal imaging is the cornerstone of our new quantum health screening because it is dynamic, in that we can witness the pathology in the body not just the anatomical features of it.Carol Chandler, an American clinician, is the leading pioneer in perfecting the use of thermal imaging in medicine. She has a remote controlled digital camera called the Max 110 (shown in Figure 1) and has developed sophisticated software which combines different layers of the human anatomy onto the thermograph. (Fig.2 and 3) These overlays include the cardiovascular system (see Fig. 2), the digestive system, the lymphatic system and the skeleton. This enables the qualified medical thermographer to accurately make their diagnosis based on thermal patterns occurring over organs or organ systems. Quantum Health 21

Thermal imaging allows doctors to detect breast cancer as soon as it creates its own blood supply.

Medical thermal imaging is non-invasive and can identify health issues such as breast cancer up to six years before the current methods can. Thermal imaging allows doctors to detect breast cancer as soon as it creates its own blood supply. Neovascularisation of the cancer is easily detected in the earlier stages of cancer using this technology. With mammograms, the cancer has to grow big enough to be detected by the human eye; therefore, the cancer must grow for years before the doctor notices anything on the mammogram. Also, the research proving that the ionising radiation emitted by the mammogram is safe is inconclusive. Infact recommendations for women at age 40 has changed twice over the past year.

This Physicians Insight clinical interpretation is an incredibly efficient service and I wish we had it in our clinics for the biofield imaging devices that we use. There is also a school that I recommend, the Institute for the Advancement of Medical Thermology, which offers comprehensive on line training for new praticitioners around the world.

Fig. 4 MTI software template.

I have looked at all the competition and I feel this one offers the most reliable and effective system.

Fig. 3 – Here we see the latest thermal image technology with lymphatic system overlays.

Digital x-ray, the new fashion in modern medicine, can be dangerous because it penetrates and disturbs the DNA more deeply. There is a service for medical thermographers –especially those that are new and in training, which pairs up some of the worlds experts in the field via the internet with a detailed written analysis of any current patient. 22 Quantum Health

Many people have heard of medical thermal imaging and its use with the early detection of breast cancer, but often do not realise that it is also able to prepone the detection of almost all diseases. It seems each condition has its own tell-tale markers that flare up visually on the themograph. In both diabetes and arthritis we see unique patterns on the hands of the patient and in Fig. 4 above we can clearly see the raised temperature of the carotid artery, which is an early warning for heart disease. The Mind-Bending Science of Time and Space *

P

hysician Larry Dossey talks about premonitions in this issue, so I thought it might be interesting to explore the scientific and philosophical concepts of time and space to see how they might apply to what we can know about the world and how we might influence our reality. Can the past be changed? Can we know the future? If so, what does this knowledge mean in terms of health and healing?

Entangled Time and Space Past, present, future. We demarcate the flow of time horizontally, along a continuum that is spatial: what is behind us, where we are, and where we are heading. So it’s not a stretch, really, to wrap our minds around Einstein’s concept of the spacetime continuum. Time and space may be more than irretrievably yoked, they may be

one and the same. Not only Einsteinian physics tells us as much, but so does quantum physics. In the fundamental equations of quantum physics, time is symmetric, meaning that it can be both “forward moving” and “backward moving” in the same equation. For instance, a particular particle moving forward in time can be identified as an electron, but moving backward in time it “becomes” its antiparticle, a positron. In the quantum realm, there is no fundamental arrow of time that marches irrevocably from past to present, although in the macroscopic world this is not our experience. The Second Law of Thermodynamics, for example, tells us that open systems tend toward greater chaos, or in scientific parlance, that entropy always increases. But this forward-only arrow of time does not hold in the eloquent equations of quantum mathematics. Quantum Health 23

Quantum

HEALTH

Another aspect of quantum physics reveals the interrelatedness of time and space: quantum entanglement explains how the relationship of two quantum entities is really a singular relationship that defies our conventional notion of the separateness of time and space. Entanglement means that two entities can be paired so that they behave as a single system. Electrons provide a good example. Entangled electrons have correlated spins: if one has an “up” spin, the other must have a “down” spin. Change the spin of one of the electron and the other electron shifts instantaneously to the opposite spin. There is no delay in time, and distance doesn’t matter—the two electrons can be light-years apart and still the correlated shift occurs instantaneously.

Entanglement in the Macro World No matter what you call it—entanglement, action at a distance, or quantum resonance—this instantaneous change occurs not only between quantum particles, but also between small macroscopic objects. For example, researchers have entangled atoms and molecules. And at the farthest boundary of science, research has shown that even people can become entangles, suggesting that there is a kind of global mind or consciousness field that connects us all. (See Dean Radin’s book Entangled Minds as a good starting point for an overview of this kind of research.) Many ancient healers and indigenous shamans have said that when one person heals, he or she is contributing to the healing of us all. Maybe they were right! Entanglement is revealing to us that there is no such thing as time and space except as a succession of “now’s” in which we are all interacting at some fundamental level in an interconnected field of information and energy. The implications are staggering not only for healing but for every aspect of life. Some of the most provocative evidence for such entanglement comes from global experiments with random number generators (RNGs). But before we look at the research about global fields, let’s focus on individual entanglement.

24 Quantum Health

One particularly persuasive type of human entanglement experiment is purely physiological in nature, so it rules out any kind belief or consciousness interference. In the experiment, two people are separated, each put in a specially shielded room that blocks any known energy fields, such as electromagnetic fields. Each is hooked up to equipment that measures physiological parameters, such as blood pressure, heart beat, brain wave patterns, and the like. A light is flashed in the eyes of one of the participants—let’s call him Bob. The measuring equipment records the changes in Bob’s physiology in response to the flash of light. What is so amazing is that the recording equipment attached to the other participant—let’s call her Alice—records physiological changes as if a light had been flashed in her eyes, although none has. Remember, she is separated in the other shielded room, far from Bob. She is a passive participant in the experiment, yet her body is not passive. It registers the flash of light—her brain responds. Currently there is no explanation for this instantaneous action at a distance except for entanglement, moving this phenomenon out of the quantum realm into our macroscopic realm. It’s interesting that the results of such experiments are more robust for “bonded” pairs, meaning two people who share an emotional connection, such as close friends, twins, or romantic couples. The current thinking is that some kind of extended field of consciousness permeates the universe, and the more closely bonded you are with another person, the easier it is be in resonance with him or her in that vast field and so to be entangled with that person. In terms of premonitions, this may help explain why we tend to get information about those we know and love more frequently than we get information about strangers. Other types of experiments with RGNs is exposing a hidden connection that suggests we each contribute to a global field of consciousness, and that when we resonate together we increase the coherence in the world. When a sufficient number of our minds resonant together, we change the unified field and both decrease

disorder and reduce randomness in the world! To my mind this must be ranked as one of the most momentous findings in the history of science, but, sadly, most conventional scientists haven’t given these results so much as a passing glance.

precognitive! In the case 9/11, the RGNs began to move from random to non-random functioning a full two hours before the attacks. They didn’t return to “normal” (producing a random output) until approximately eight hours after the events.

The experiments rely on the use of a network of random number generators. An RGN is a machine designed to produce a completely random output, say as a string of zeros and ones. (These machines are not to be confused with pseudo−RGNs, which are found in many electronics, such as computers, and whose output is not strictly random.) There is a network of about seventy RGNs that form part of the Global Consciousness Project that are located at labs around the world. They run continuously, spewing out streams of random ones and zeros. But what is curious is that when some major world event occurs, such that the attention of the world is diverted from our individual activities and we come together to focus our attention on a single world event—such as the terrorist attacks in the U.S. on September 11, 2001, or the death of Princess Diana - the RGNs lose their randomness. They begin to display strings of zeros and ones that have nonrandom patterns embedded in them. In effect, they become more coherent, and they each do so at the same time, no matter how far away from the event they are located.

Implications for Health and More

This astounding move toward coherence defies any known explanation, for mind—or directed attention−has somehow overridden engineering. When great numbers of people direct their attention and our individual minds begin to resonant as one, the universe becomes more orderly. We somehow collectively increase the field of coherence in the universe, and it shows up physically, in the output of these machines. We don’t yet know what other ways this move toward order displays itself in the world. In fact, we barely know where to look for signs of this “re-ordering” of nature. Through the RNG network, however, we know that the move from randomness to greater coherence, can begin hours before the actual attention-grabbing event occurs. The global mind appears to be

How might these findings affect your world, your health, your healthcare practice? As I said earlier, the ancients have told us, heal yourself and you contribute to the healing of the world. So at the deepest, most fundamental level, it means that when you wake up to health, refine your perceptions, improve your life, raise your awareness, you are doing so not only for yourself, but for all of us—maybe only a tiny bit, but a bit nonetheless. It means that no man is an island, as is no nation. It suggests that we do have to care for our brothers and sisters suffering in other parts of the world, because their suffering is affecting us just as our healing may affect them. It means that how you feel about someone, how you direct your attention every day in every way, contributes either to the disorder or the increasing order of your family and friends, your medical practice and patients, your community, and to the very direction the world is taking and the way the cosmos is unfolding. The bottom line is that it means we must all take responsibility. At the deepest level of the cosmos, there is no me and you. There is no self and other. There is only us. At a more practical and immediate level, if you are sick, then gathering a group of friends together to send you loving energy or to pray for you may indeed increase the coherence of the space around you and of your body’s energies, and that group energy may indeed help bolster your recovery. It means that if you are not getting along with your medical partners or the environment of your healthcare clinic is harried, disorganised, and impersonal, both you and your patients may suffer because you are reinforcing the randomness - the lack of coherence in your space. The implications even take us into the very heart of cause and effect, suggesting that the past Quantum Health 25

Quantum

HEALTH

is not fixed and the future is not determined, which has immense ramifications for the state of “now.” In this new entangled reality, the term “cause and effect” takes on new meaning. One class of experiments in particular demonstrates that time is fluid, as are cause and effect. Robert Jahn and his colleagues at Princeton University’s Engineering Anomalies Lab (which, by the way, is now closed) for decades conducted studies on how mind can influence machines. They used RGNs, or other kinds of machines that produced entirely random outputs. They had volunteers come into the lab and asked them to try to influence a machine—using only their intention— so that its output became nonrandom. So, for example, the volunteer were asked to try to influence the machine with their minds to output more ones than zeroes. Jahn and his colleagues conducted millions of trials over many decades, and the collective results were small but significant variations above chance. The results are irrefutable—mind can influence machines to move from purely random outputs to nonrandom outputs. Here’s what’s really amazing. Volunteers could change the results of the output backwards and forwards in time! They could change the future running of a test or the results of a test that already had been conducted. In terms of changing the future, a volunteer would be asked to intend that a test that was scheduled to run on a certain day and time weeks in the future would become nonrandom—perhaps that the machine would produce more ones than zeros. The volunteer did so, and two weeks later the scheduled test would be run. The results produced were nonrandom. There would be more ones than zeros. Over thousands of trials, the results were consistently statistically significant. Future events can be influenced be applying intention. What about the past? Jahn and others conducted many experiments of this kind as well. They would let the RNG run to establish a baseline, then run a test and archive the result without looking at it. This is a crucial point—they remained blind to the output of that run. Then at a later date—say 26 Quantum Health

two weeks later—they asked a volunteer to come into the lab and use the power of intention to influence the test that had been run two weeks before. Again let’s say that the intention was that it would produce more ones than zeros. After the volunteer conducted the intention session, the result of the test that had been recorded two weeks earlier was finally read—and it showed the effects of the intention. The output was nonrandom. The past had been changed. But here’s the rub. The experiment worked only if the result that had been recorded earlier was not known to anyone. In other words, as long as the initial test results were not fixed into “reality,” say by the researcher actually reading them, then they could be changed through intention at a later date. If they were recorded and read, then they were somehow fixed in reality and could not be changed through intention. Such amazing results come not just from frontier consciousness researchers, but from quantum physicists themselves. There is an experiment, called the double-slit experiment, which I won’t describe here, but that helped to launch the quantum revolution. It has been replicated many times since then, and it also revealed the malleability of cause and effect. In a particular application of the double-slit experiment, called the “quantum eraser,” the results of the test were changed backward in time. So mainstream physicists themselves have found the same quirk of time as consciousness researchers have. If we again apply these findings to health and medicine, the first implication that comes to mind for me is that we to some extent fix reality by how we perceive it—and we, of course, have a choice about our perceptions. So we have some influence or control, small though it may be, over how reality unfolds. One of the most common ways we do this is through language. In quantum science, particles such as electrons exist in every possible state until they are observed or measured, when they “collapse” down to one set of characteristics, usually those that fit the experimental set-up. This process is called collapsing the wavefunction. In healthcare and medicine, you could say that we collapse the

Quantum

HEALTH

The person may go from perceiving himself as someone who is living to someone who is dying.

I don’t know how we can get around our need to name our conditions. We seek to know, and certainly knowledge can be power. However, doing so may collapse the wavefunction of our being in negative ways, changing us in an instant from a healthy person into a sick one, from a fully realised person into one whose identity is now defined by a diagnosis or disease. So at the very least we have to be aware that at the moment we name something, we are making it our reality in a very fundamental way. A Peruvian shaman once told me, “Words are beings. Be careful who you call to sit in council around you.” Every healthcare practitioner and patient benefits from paying attention to that wisdom. When we give statistics on survival rates or predictions on the outcomes of treatments, we may be cementing

wavefunction of a patient through words. A person may not feel well, go to the doctor to have some tests, and then receive a diagnosis. Before the diagnosis, that person is a healthy individual who just doesn’t feel up to par. But the moment the diagnosis is spoken, it might fix a new reality into place, making it an actuality, so that the person is now suddenly “sick.” He or she goes from being Bob or Alice to cancer patient or multiple sclerosis sufferer. The person may go from perceiving himself as someone who is living to someone who is dying. That is a deeply reality-altering shift in perception. One extreme example of this from the medical literature is of a man who went for a check-up and was told by his doctor, after some tests were run, that he had a deadly form of cancer. Within months the man was dead, presumably from that cancer. But upon autopsy, it was revealed that there was no cancer in his body. He had died from his belief that he had terminal cancer. This is called the nocebo effect, the dark twin to the placebo effect (where healing occurs only from the belief that the treatment is beneficial).

a likelihood into place; we may be influencing the reality of that patient. That person’s past and future may change accordingly. The big question is how readily this perceptual shift translates into a physical change in the body. Jahn’s work showed that mind can influence machines, and other researchers have shown how potent our minds are in influencing our bodies, so, we have to be aware that although patients want to name their disease and know outcome probabilities of treatments, doing so can contribute to the increasing disorder of their state of being. On the other hand, we can choose to help increase the coherence of our patients’ sense of themselves and their “stories”—both past ones and those unfolding into their futures. We can work with them to use their emotions and their state of consciousness to influence their past—perhaps by using techniques to release the emotional and behavioral tape loops that may have contributed to the creation and progression of the disease. In the literature of spontaneous regressions, we find that most “overnight cures” are preceded by some kind of intense emotional insight or release. We also can work with patients to influence their future, perhaps by teaching them visualisation techniques, meditation and so on. This may help increase coherence and so perhaps influence the future unfolding of their reality, nudging their body-mind back toward health. At the very least, this research reminds us that it is the responsibility of every healthcare practitioner to attend not only to a patient’s body, but to his or her mind and spirit as well. This is the more holistic stance we must adopt in this brave new world of quantum health and medicine. *Parts of this article are adapted or taken verbatim from a talk Joan gave at the Quantum Energy Medicine conference in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2008.

Morphic fields and morphic resonance Rupert Sheldrake, Ph.D.

M

orphic fields underlie the organization of animals, plants, cells, proteins, crystals, brains and minds. They help to explain habits, memories, instincts, telepathy and the sense of direction. They have an inherent memory. They imply that many of the socalled laws of nature are more like habits. This is, of course, a controversial hypothesis.

The fields of morphogenesis My interest in these new kind of fields first developed while I was doing research on the development of plants at Cambridge University. To start with, I was concerned only with one particular kind of morphic field, namely morphogenetic fields.

28 Quantum Health

Quantum

How do plants grow from spores or seeds into the characteristic form of their species? How do the leaves of ferns, oaks and bamboos take up their shapes? These are questions to do with what biologists call morphogenesis , the cominginto-being of form (Greek: morphe = form; genesis = coming into being), one of the great unsolved problems of biology. The naive approach is simply to say that morphogenesis is genetically programmed. Different species just follow the instructions in their genes. But a few moments’ reflection shows that this reply won’t do. All the cells of the body contain the same genes. In your body the same genetic programme is present in your eyes, kidneys and fingers. If they are all programmed identically, then how do they develop so differently? Thanks to the great triumphs of molecular biology, we know what genes actually do. Some code for the sequence of amino acids in proteins; others are involved in the control of protein synthesis. They enable organisms to make particular proteins. But these alone cannot account for form. Your arms and your legs are chemically identical. If ground up and analyzed biochemically, they would be indistinguishable. But they have different shapes. Something other than the genes and the proteins they code for is needed to explain their form. Biologists who study the development of form in plants and animals have long been aware of these problems, and since the 1920s many have adopted the idea that developing organisms are shaped by fields called morphogenetic fields. These are rather like invisible blueprints that underlie the form of the growing organism. But they are not, of course, designed by an architect, any more than a “genetic programme” is supposed to be designed by a computer programmer. They are fields: self-organizing regions of influence, analogous to magnetic fields and other recognised fields of nature. But no one knows what these fields are or how they work. Most biologists assume that they will at some time in the future be explained in terms

of regular physics and chemistry. This is no more than an act of faith. After ten years of research in developmental biology, I came to the conclusion that these fields were not just a way of talking about standard mechanistic processes, but something really new. This was the starting point for my own development of the hypothesis of morphic fields first proposed in my book A New Science of Life (1) and further developed in The Presence of the Past. (2)

The hypothesis of morphic fields All self-organizing systems are wholes made up of parts, which are themselves wholes at a lower level, such as atoms in molecules and molecules in crystals. The same is true of organelles in cells, cells in tissues, tissues in organs, organs in organisms, organisms in social groups. At each level, the morphic field gives each whole its characteristic properties, and interconnects and coordinates the constituent parts. The fields responsible for the development and maintenance of bodily form in plants and animals are called morphogenetic fields. In animals, the organisation of behaviour and mental activity depends on behavioural and mental fields. The organisation of societies and cultures depends on social and cultural fields. (3) All these kinds of organising fields are morphic fields. (4) Morphic fields are located within and around the systems they organise. Like quantum fields, they work probabilistically. They restrict, or impose order upon, the inherent indeterminism of the systems under their influence. Thus, for example, a protein field organises the way in which the chain of amino acids (the “primary structure”, determined by the genes) coils and folds up to give the characteristic three-dimensional form of the protein, “choosing” from among many possible structures, all equally possible from an energetic point of view. Social fields coordinate the behaviour of individuals within social groups, for example the behaviour of fish in schools, or birds in flocks. (5) Quantum Health 29

Quantum

HEALTH

The mathematician René Thom has created mathematical models of morphogenetic fields in which the end-points towards which systems develop are defined as attractors . (6) In the branch of mathematics known as dynamics, attractors represent the limits towards which dynamical systems are drawn. They provide a scientific way of thinking about ends, purposes, goals or intentions. All morphic fields contain attractors. The most controversial feature of this hypothesis is that the structure of morphic fields depends on what has happened before. They contain a kind of memory. Through repetition the patterns they organise become increasingly probable, increasingly habitual. The force these fields exert is the force of habit. Whatever the explanation of its origin, once a new morphic field, a new pattern of organization, has come into being, through repetition the field becomes stronger. The same pattern becomes more likely to happen again. The more often patterns are repeated, the more probable they become. The fields contain a kind of cumulative memory and become increasingly habitual. Fields evolve in time and form the basis of habits. From this point of view nature is essentially habitual. Even the so-called “laws of nature” may be more like habits. The means by which information or an activitypattern is transferred from a previous to a subsequent system of the same kind is called morphic resonance. Morphic resonance involves the influence of like upon like, the influence of patterns of activity on subsequent similar patterns of activity, an influence that passes through or across space and time from past to present. These influences do not to fall off with distance in space or time. The greater the degree of similarity, the greater the influence of morphic resonance. Morphic resonance gives an inherent memory in fields at all levels of complexity. Any given morphic system, say a squirrel, “tunes in” to previous similar systems, in this case previous squirrels of its species. Through this process each individual squirrel draws upon, and in turn 30 Quantum Health

contributes to, a collective or pooled memory of its kind. In the human realm, this kind of collective memory corresponds to what the psychologist C.G. Jung called the “collective unconscious”. Morphic resonance should be detectable in the realms of physics, chemistry, biology, animal behaviour, psychology and the social sciences. But long established systems, such as zinc atoms, quartz crystals and insulin molecules are governed by such strong morphic fields, with such deep grooves of habit, that little change can be observed. They behave as if they are governed by fixed laws. By contrast, new systems should show an increasing tendency to come into being the more often they are repeated. They should become increasingly probable; they should happen more easily as time goes on. For example, when a new chemical compound is synthesised by research chemists and crystallized, it may take a long time for the crystal to form for the first time. There is no pre-existing morphic field for the lattice structure. But when the first crystals form, they will make it easier for similar crystals to appear anywhere in the world. The more often the compound is crystallised, the easier it should be to crystallise. In fact new compounds do indeed tend to crystallize more easily the more often they are made. Chemists usually explain this effect in terms of crystal “seeds” from the new crystals spreading around the world as invisible dust particles in the air, or chemists learning from others how to do it. But the hypothesis of morphic fields predicts that this should happen anyway under standardized conditions, even if dust particles are filtered out of the air.

Connections with quantum physics Experiments to test for the spatial aspects of morphic fields imply a kind of non-locality that is not at present recognised by institutional science. Nevertheless, it may turn out to be related to the non-locality or non-separability that is an integral part of quantum theory, implying connections

Quantum

HEALTH

or correlations at a distance undreamt of by classical physics. Albert Einstein, found the idea of “spooky action at a distance” implied by quantum theory deeply distasteful; but his worst fears have come true. (7) Recent experimental evidence shows that these connections lie at the heart of physics. Several physicists have been intrigued by the possible connections between morphic fields and quantum theory, including John Bell (of Bell’s theorem) and David Bohm, whose theory of the implicate order, based on the non-separability of quantum systems, turned out to be extraordinarily compatible with my own proposals.(8) These connections have also been explored by the American quantum physicist Amit Goswami (9) and by the German quantum physicist HansPeter Dürr. (10) But it is still not clear exactly how morphic fields might fit in with quantum physics, if only because the implications of quantum theory for complex systems like cells and brains are still obscure.

Experiments on morphic fields The hypothesis of morphic fields is a scientific hypothesis, and as such is experimentally testable. There are several possible ways in which it can be, and has been, investigated by experiment. Some of these tests attempt to detect the fields as they link together different parts of a system in space; other tests look for the effects of morphic resonance over time. The easiest way to test for morphic fields directly is to work with societies of organisms. Individual animals can be separated in such a way that they cannot communicate with each other by normal sensory means. If information still travels between them, this would imply the existence of interconnections of the kind provided by morphic fields. The transfer of information through morphic fields could help provide an explanation for telepathy, which typically takes places between members of groups who share social or emotional bonds. When I started looking for evidence of field-like connections between members of social groups,

I found that I was moving into realms very little understood by science. For example, no one knows how societies of termites are coordinated in such a way that these small, blind insects can build complex nests with an intricate internal architecture. (11) No one understands how flocks of birds or schools of fish can change direction so quickly without the individuals bumping into each other. (12) Likewise, no one understands the nature of human social bonds. One particularly promising area for this kind of research concerns telepathy between people and domesticated animals, as discussed in my book Dogs That Know When Their Owners Are Coming Home. For example, many dogs and cats seem to know when their owners are coming home, even when they return at non-routine times in unfamiliar vehicles such as taxis, and when no one at home knows when they are coming. The animals seem to be responding telepathically to their owners’ intentions. (13) According to the hypothesis of formative causation, morphic fields extend beyond the brain into the environment, linking us to the objects of our perception, and are capable of affecting them through our intention and attention.(14) This is another aspect of morphic fields that lends itself to experimental testing. Such fields would mean that we can affect things just by looking at them, in ways that cannot be explained in terms of conventional physics. For example, we may be able to affect someone by looking at them from behind, when they have no other way of knowing that we are staring at them. The sense of being stared from behind is in fact a common experience. Experiments already indicate that it is a real phenomenon. (15) It does not seem to be explicable in terms of chance coincidence, the known senses, or fields currently recognised by physicists. The unsolved problems of animal navigation, migration, and homing may also depend on invisible fields connecting the animals to their destinations. (16) In effect, these could act like invisible elastic bands linking them to their homes. In the language of dynamics, their home Quantum Health 31

can be regarded as an attractor. (17)

Morphic resonance in biology The build-up of habits can be observed experimentally only in the case of new patterns of development and of behaviour. There is already evidence from observations on fruit flies that morphic resonance effects may be occurring in the realm of morphogenesis. When fruit fly eggs were exposed to a chemical (diethyl ether), some of them developed abnormally, turning into flies with four wings instead of two. When this treatment was repeated generation after generation, more and more flies developed four wings, even if their ancestors had never been exposed to the chemical. (18) There is also much circumstantial evidence that animal behaviour can evolve rapidly, as if a collective memory is building up through morphic resonance. In particular, large-scale adaptations have occurred in the behaviour of domesticated animals all over the world. One example concerns cattle guards. Ranchers throughout the American West have found that they can save money on cattle grids by using fake ones instead, consisting of stripes painted across the road. Real cattle guards are made of a series of parallel steel tubes or rails with gaps in between, which make it difficult for cattle to walk across them, and even painful to try. However, present-day cattle do not usually even try to cross them. The illusory grids work just like the real ones. When cattle approach them, they “put on brakes with all four feet”, as one rancher expressed it to me. Is this just because calves learn from older cattle that they should not try to cross? Apparently not. Several ranchers have told me that herds not previously exposed to real cattle grids will avoid the phoney ones. And Ted Friend, of Texas A & M University, has tested the response of several hundred head of cattle to painted grids, and has found that naive animals avoid them just as much as those previously exposed to real grids. (19) Sheep and horses likewise show an aversion 32 Quantum Health

to crossing painted grids. This aversion may well depend on morphic resonance from previous members of the species that have learned to avoid cattle grids the hard way. There are many such examples. There are also data from laboratory experiments on rats and other animals that such effects occur. The best known involves a series of experiments in which subsequent generations of rats learned how to escape from a water maze. As time went on, rats in laboratories all over the world were able to do this quicker and quicker. (20)

Morphic resonance in human learning Morphic resonance has many implications for the understanding of human learning, including the acquisition of languages. Through the collective memory on which individuals draw, and to which they contribute, it should in general be easier to learn what others have learned before. This idea fits well with the observations of linguists like Noam Chomsky, who propose that language learning by young children takes place so rapidly and creatively that it cannot be explained simply in terms of imitation. The structure of language seems to be inherited in some way. In his book The Language Instinct Steven Pinker gives many examples to support this idea. One of the few areas in which detailed quantitative data are available over periods of decades is in the scores of IQ (Intelligence Quotient) tests. If morphic resonance occurs, average performance in IQ tests should be rising not because people are becoming more intelligent, but because IQ tests should be getting easier to do as a result of morphic resonance from the millions who have done them before. This effect is now well known, and is called the Flynn effect, after its discoverer, James Flynn. Large increases in IQ test scores have occurred many different countries, including the USA, Japan, Britain, France, Germany and Holland. (21) Many attempts have been made to explain this “Flynn effect”, but none have succeeded.

(22) Flynn

himself describes it as “baffling”. (23) But morphic resonance could provide a natural explanation.

Implications The hypothesis of formative causation has farreaching implications in all branches of science. For example, morphic fields could revolutionise our understanding of cultural inheritance, and the influence of the ancestors. Richard Dawkins has given the name “meme” to “units of cultural transmission”, (24) and such memes can be interpreted as morphic fields. Morphic resonance also sheds new light on many religious practices, including rituals. (25) Even scientific paradigms can be seen as morphic fields, stabilised by morphic resonance, with a tendency to become increasingly habitual and unconscious the more often they are repeated. (26)

But however wide its implications, this hypothesis has a major inherent limitation. It helps explain how patterns of organization are repeated; but it does not explain how they come into being in the first place. It leaves open the question of evolutionary creativity. Formative causation is compatible with several different theories, ranging from the idea that all novelty is ultimately a matter of chance, to explanations in terms of divine creativity. Tapping into the “beyond”

can help you live more successfully in this dimension…

W

hen I was asked to write this month’s article on something to do with “premonition and intuition”, my first reaction was, “I should have seen it coming…” But then I had to smile when I remembered the conversation I’d had only the day before, with a client who was beginning to wake up to her own intuitive gifts. She’d been somewhat alarmed at the feelings she’d been feeling – especially as they always seemed to come before bad news. She’d had a particular strong sense of foreboding going on holiday – sensing that her grandmother would pass away. And she did – six days into the trip! My client’s concern – doubled by the fact that she’d also had a strong sense that she was going to be involved in a car accident (which did indeed happen two days later) – was that perhaps she was somehow causing the events, rather than simply “picking up” on them. Perhaps some of her unease was due to the current interest in “cosmic ordering” and the like. For example, the worldwide acceptance – and delight – in Rhonda Byrne’s The Secret has for many instilled the power of positive thinking. Millions are now beginning to understand the concept of focusing on what you want, rather than on what you fear.

34 Quantum Health

So far, so good. So great, even. However, when the lines become blurred and innocently delightful people like my client begin to worry about whether they’re causing “bad” things to happen around them, it’s time for the subject to be addressed in greater depth. Part of the issue may be down to “a little knowledge being a dangerous thing” – after all, while The Secret has been a fantastic gateway to getting people to think differently and to begin their own spiritual quest, for many, the feeling is that once you’ve understood it, your work is done. But of course, the untold secret is that it’s merely the tip of the iceberg. Would that the path of spiritual development were so easy – or so swift – but of course, it’s instead much more about a life long quest into a deeper and greater understanding of who we are at our core. Passionate scholars will investigate all things quantum – and along the way will probably also explore the esoteric teachings of the mystics, all in a bid for greater understanding and knowledge. However, true enlightenment is never going to come from knowledge and learning. They’re a solid platform, but without the willingness to tap into the intuition and to explore that which resonates even if it can’t be explained completely

Quantum

HEALTH

rationally, the likelihood of experiencing real enlightenment is practically nil. It has long been believed that knowledge is power – but I’d disagree. Knowledge APPLIED is power – and through the intuition and right brain, we’re able to start applying what we logically learn and rationalise through our left brain. But back to my client. She was relieved to hear that what she was tapping into was another dimension and a brief discussion about how time is all in the now (even though our experience of it in this third dimension is more “linear”) helped put her at her ease. We also spoke about how she was merely witnessing rather than creating – and that she had in no way caused either her grandmother’s death…nor her own car crash. Indeed, by choosing to listen to her intuition, she’d probably stepped up her cautionary awareness – which may have led to a less severe accident. Equally important is the idea that nothing is actually good or bad – it is our judgement that causes us to label things according to whether our ego likes or dislikes them. However, from a bigger soul picture, our greatest learning and development comes (maddeningly!) from pain, rather than pleasure – so while our ego may protest that “I don’t like this, it hurts”, our soul is delighting in the progress that we’re making. Another shift of the kaleidoscope also showed my client the accuracy of what she was picking up intuitively. Often we fail to believe that we have such a gift – and we repeatedly test (often at a subconscious level) our precognitive abilities to see whether or not they have any validity. I remember doing exactly the same several years ago. I was due to be speaking to about 100 insurance experts about the power of the subconscious mind – but before the day dawned, I’d received two very disturbing pieces of news – the first about a friend being diagnosed with cancer and the second about a child who’d been struck down with an unidentified disease. After a couple of minutes, I’d had a strong sense that

both would be fine – but that I was somehow being given a “message” for the delegates that I’d soon be addressing. I called a friend and told him the story and startled him by saying that I thought I was being nudged to talk about death and what it has to teach us. He was a little frightened – on my behalf – about how such a talk would be received, but the more he protested, the more I knew I had to follow my intuition. The phone conversation ended with me asking him to send healing for the event. As I sat in the audience waiting to be called up the front, I’d been feeling extremely nervous. But suddenly, from nowhere, a tremendous peace came over me. Again, I knew that the two people I’d been concerned about would be fine – and I also knew that I was being guided to speak from the heart, about death…and to ditch the speech I’d prepared. (Little did I know about channelling then!) I also felt (somewhat dramatically, I know) a deep warmth, as though a pair of angel’s wings were being wrapped around me. Although I say it myself, the talk went down well – with lots of people afterwards thanking me for making them view death differently, with several saying that they’d recognised that death motivates us for life. But more intriguingly, I rang my friend a couple of days later and thanked him for his support. “I did as you asked,” he said, “and sent healing. But I couldn’t remember how to do it – so I’m afraid I cheated a bit…and imagined a pair of angel’s wings being wrapped around you, protecting you!” Olivia Stefanino is passionate about helping others to become their own guru – whether that conjures up in your mind an image of a management icon or a spiritual mystic! Working Together With NES UK Conference

T

his year the NES Health annual conference was buzzing with excitement in anticipation of Peter Fraser’s talk, and he didn’t disappoint. I caught up with Peter after the event and asked him to go over some of what was discussed.

Q

How do you think the talk went at the conference? I hear you delivered a pretty comprehensive talk about science and its role in the alternative arena? PF We broached one of the most tender topics that you could possibly broach in this alternative medicine business. We started talking about empirical approaches in science and what science itself might be, and that since about 1925 science itself, or at least the university organisations, appear to have dropped energetic medicine on its head, despite that fact there is a vast amount of empirical data and supportive evidence from several countries and this caused somewhat of a wound that exists today. You can’t just suddenly deny history, we have to confront this. We decided this was a little pod of information containing conflict - things that don’t match with other things, and we called this a negative fractal. And we get negative fractals popping out of the human body field and they live in the memory, in fact when you get a huge number of these memory fractals together it forms a belief system, and when you start saying NES is scientific, and for everything we’ve done or said, I’ve actually done empirical testing. The lecture was trying to explain why it took me 25 years of doing tiny little individual tests and how we came up with a big pattern to come up 36 Quantum Health

with a very complex thing like the human body field, and I even showed on screen a picture of the famous painting The Picnic on the Grass, which is a whole lot of little dots, but because they are put in the right place with the right intensity, they form a picture. My research is like that painting; we’ve got a whole lot of bits of data and we’ve learnt where to put the data. I pointed out that this isn’t at all like you would hear that the scientific method is supposed to be, and in my research for the lecture I went right through what was the scientific method of Darwin and what was the scientific method of Einstein, and it’s nothing like what it says in the text book. So I began to feel a bit stronger about saying we have a scientific method that fits this kind of data. I didn’t spend a lot of time trying to explain bioenergetic matching at all because I’ve already talked about that a lot, but I did want to show how all the little bits of information we are putting together, and coming to conclusions about them, retesting, as if we’re forming structures of knowledge. This is the way I think Darwin worked; they all say Darwin worked it out logically. What we’re saying is that Darwin was a genius and he was intuitive, and he had a feel for putting bits of information together.

Q

Do you think that negative fractals are cyclic?

PF In my lecture I was pointing out that all the memory that we have is stored in the muscles, but our emotional memory isn’t; it’s stored in the chakras – they’re like spherical structures in front of the spine and the one that’s concerned with cancer in the emotional chakra. And whenever you get inflammation, you get a wave; because

Quantum

HEALTH

of the global scaling theory you’re going to get recurrences. Everyone knows that memory is cyclic. At my age which is only 96 (no it isn’t – Ed), I’m beginning to get recollections about my school days and my teachers and all the people I knew in Grade 1. It all starts to come back. So there are long cycles, but as far as illness goes we get shorter cycles. The Chinese talk about these cycles in their Traditional Medicine.

Q

What do you think most people took away from your talk?

PF I pointed out that we are all scientists, we all look at data and decide what‘s going on, we’re all empirical as best we can be but I was complaining about the males in our Anglo Saxon society who have their intuition suppressed and what a wonderful thing it would be if we got some intuitive males, because we have millions of intuitive females getting the right answers. It’s a skill. The males need to develop the skill, and the answer in case you were wondering, is Heart Driver (NES) to develop intuition. So I think if we are going to get some good scientists we want intuition which will give you the inspiration.

But we always have to check the intuition about what we are observing with rationality, which is the analytical head part. I’m saying that science really begins with intuition and we need to add the analytical bit, not at the start, but at the finish to make sure that it’s logical and is coherent with other knowledge. The point is that science doesn’t belong to any particular group in society. It belongs to us – anyone who has a brain can be a scientist for at least five minutes or more. Scientists are people who study the world empirically; they don’t have some superior knowledge. This made everyone in the lecture extremely happy. “I had a great time at the NES conference. It was very informative, plus I made a lot of new friends from all over the world. Peter Fraser’s talk was inspirational and enlightening, he has a style of delivery that holds you. A lot f what he said resonated with work I am doing myself, so this was very good for me on a personal level. The NES team made us all feel cared for from the moment we arrived until the moment we left; it felt like one big family.” Cynthia Hamilton Tyrone Quantum Health 37

The NES conferences are like an alumni reunion, but far more exciting. The joy of hearing a gentle antipodean’s voice deliver the complex theory of information transfer in and outside the body sets my pulmonary valve racing! I’m talking of course, about the exceptionally extraordinary Peter Fraser. The virtues of disharmonious fractals pods expanded into the lecture hall whilst I noted pressure waves from the heart imprint these pods. I loved it, did I ‘really’ know all 24 nerve pulses go to the heart via the fluids in the body, or quantum pulses memory becomes imprinted in to the matrix? He discussed the merits of the placebo fractal culture and fractal nodes but heeded caution for the negative fractals as ‘they’re the killers!’ Point taken as the logic of Coco and the heart solving problems embraced my attention. The Yi Jing Fetragrams and the combination wave eased in to communicate analogies with the Yellow Emperor. I was riveted – move over Simon Cowell, Peter Fraser is in town! With grace and charm he glides me through understanding the binary code in three dimensions as I reflect back to the cytopathic mirror. This is the genius of Peter Fraser, science made so easy you believe you knew it all along. I was reminded the morphogenetic field was first proposed in 1925 (why didn’t I know that?) 38 Quantum Health

I rapidly drew squiggles representing the paramagnetic particle heart field with the circulation field – Ah, so, that’s why I’ve been feeling off colour recently. And all too soon his lecture was over and I’m enticed back to Sarah Turner’s recent research projects. Admittedly I had a 7 month contribution in this area, regarding age related macula degeneration and the CC Hologram’s startling changes, but there too was the astonishing reality of Cynthia’s autistic subject interacting normally and a tear jerking ME recovery from Norway. Sunday brought Deborah Holt and Randi Eaton’s Master Class. Their knowledge and wisdom with NES is like angels playing the harp. With grace, charm and fine tuned intellect they analysed my scary red integrators whilst I rustled in my pocket for the delicious organic chocolate imprinted with ESR! Harry’s intellectual charisma and Olympian energy closed the conference, while we all waited in baited breath for software updates. I returned home to Sussex proudly clutching my gift of home remedies. Bursting with quantum wonderment and appreciation I’m proud to be reminded of Deborah and Randi’s serenity coupled with Peter’s mantra “if you want to get better you can re-imprint” pulsing my Coco and Bodyfield! Perception “Who am I?” By Heather McGee-Parkin

S

ince humans first came to being, the question of ‘Who am I?’ has puzzled, confounded and driven us all at some time or other in the quest for truth. The Holy Grail that promises to answer this question; teases us as each century passes, with new ideas and thoughts challenging the perceptions of who we are. We have turned to religion, deities, astrology, science and each other for clues to this penultimate question, but as much as we search outward from our respected peers or look inwards to our hearts, one thing comes forth clearly. It is all a matter of perception. As Socrates so aptly put it, “The more you learn the less you know.” Take God speaking to Abraham in Genesis for example; when he appears as a burning bush, a bright prophecy of knowledge that sets to impart on us cosmic wisdom: “Who are you?” Abraham asks expectantly. The great burning bush replies “I am who I am”. This answer is all and unsatisfactory; in the fact that we are once again left not fully knowing.

Is Our Glass Half Empty Or Half Full? We know that our emotions are affected by perception. We are living the same life regardless of the perception, but how what we perceive creates the greater outcome of how we live. The western world is filled with luxury and particularly here in the U.K. Most of us are fortunate enough to have a roof over our head, electric fires to keep us warm and an abundance of food at the tap of our fingers at our local

supermarkets. We have the luxury of education and hospital systems that are available to all. Yet many of us our plagued with dissolution, depression and stagnant spirits. Many of us have forgotten what it is like to have fun. T.V documentaries, travel shows and low cost flights have enabled us to experience countries we may not otherwise have ever seen. Philosophies and attitudes from the outer Hebrides, to the yurts in Mongolia , the temples of Tibet, the Aborigines of Australia, the tribes of Africa, to the people who live and feed off the river of the Amazon now bounce off our screens and enter our homes on a daily basis. Some environments are so basic that they appear hostile and positively uninhabitable to our coddled senses. A world without modern conveniences? Without refrigerators, TV’s, Jimmy Choo’s, Starbucks and i-pods? Unthinkable! It is an existence that most of us are unable to relate to - we have no reference point. To the families who live there, this is their home; where they live, breathe, feed and love. This is the only world for them. But what has been most striking and has given us a such a surprisingly strong spiritual kick up the derriere, is that many of these peoples – without the modern comforts, stripped of the materialistic crutches that we are reliant upon; appear to be happy and abundant in their lives, the very thing we have been searching for. Indeed, many voyagers report after returning from what at first appears to be impoverished countries, (or very different from our commodity led western society) experience a sense of selfemerging self. Possibly without the purchasing Quantum Health 39

Quantum

HEALTH

power and the drive for constant stimulus; the need for psychiatrists, shelves of self-help books and the plethora of medications become muted and replaced. Perhaps the luxury convenience in these societies is actually the ‘lack’ of these which ultimately allows them the space to be and content with just are ‘who they are’. A perception and a gift, that perhaps one we can all learn from. In his book Biology of Belief; Professor Bruce Lipton’s ground-breaking studies in ‘New Biology’ lead him to the conclusion that genes and DNA do not in fact control our biology but instead are themselves controlled by signals from outside of the cell, including energetic perceptions that we send from our positive and negative thoughts. Scientific experiments have shown throughout the ages that positive affirmations can be great healers; they can affect our thought processes, our internal chemical reactions and contribute to our mental and physical wellbeing. This has been proven in standard medical testing by the placebo effect. Perceptions are a dichotomy. They can bring warmth and love to any given situation or alternately can be destructive. From the personal core of the individual, to the philosophies of groups, to the dogmas of nations they contribute both to world peace and world destruction. Negative perceptions of identical situations can bring a distorted view of ourselves and can contribute to severe psychological, emotional and mental distress. Anorexic’s come from a basis of poor self esteem, their warped sense of self-perception forces them to view themselves as unacceptable. The negative messages that they send to themselves actually change their perception of their bodies so much so, that when they look in the mirror they don’t see the bones, the sunken skin and the starved and emaciated being or even the ‘I am’ they just see fat under the layers of adipose tissue.

What Is Forced Perception? Seeing the world through rose-coloured glasses 40 Quantum Health

may outwardly appear to be a positive step but can lead to discontentment when the ‘reality perception’ chords of the individual battle with the ‘forced perception’. In severe cases it can lead to a complete disconnection from reality, it can encourage dogmatism and rigidity when alternative view points threaten to shake its foundation. It is incongruous in nature and not honest with the ‘I am’. Seeing the world through ‘clear glasses’ in all its glory should possibly be our aim in this earthly perception. There is a direct difference between a positive attitude and a forced perception. A positive attitude allows us to see our perceptions in the most beautiful light of all. It does not deny us conflicting thoughts and feelings it enhances, accepts and embraces them and allows us to be. PERCEPTION AS SENSES “Scientists have become aware of the alarming limitations of mans senses.” Lincoln Barnett; The Universe and Einstein. “Time is even a method which a person formulates his perception by contrasting the moment he is living with what he holds in his memory. If a man had no memory he would be unable to make such interpretations and would therefore never form any perception of time.”*

Muxlim: Relativity of Time From the individuals’ inner belief, to their reflections and outward viewpoints, all things stem from perception. It tests all forms of senses:

Taste People’s taste varies from the individual, to the group, to the nation and country. What are viewed by some as ‘delicacies’ are regarded by others with revulsion, just the thought at eating lets say ‘dog’s’ or ‘monkey’s brains’ can bring bile to the throat of many an average connoisseur and yet some much loved U.K items like marmite and blood pudding can bring the same reaction to individuals from other countries. Hence, knowing

Quantum

HEALTH

or understanding the ‘perception’ of what things are made of or come from can directly affect our taste.

Hearing and Sound Perception In January 2007 as part of a social experiment on perception the Washington Post organised an occasion for the world class violinist Joshua Bell and his $3.5 million Stradivarius to busque incognito at the Metro Station. Bell performed six Bach pieces within an hour; during that time approximately two thousand people went through the station, only six people stopped and briefly listened. By the end of the hour Joshua Bell received a total of $32. As soon as he finished playing, silence took over. No one noticed. There was no applause, nor any recognition. Two days prior Joshua Bell had sold out a theater in Boston where seats averaged $100 each. Some of the questions raised from this experiment have been ‘In a common place at an inappropriate hour, do our perceptions of beauty change?’ and more poignantly ‘If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing one of the most remarkable music pieces ever written, how many other things are we missing?’

Touch We use information from the sense of touch to tell us about the world around us – this is known as haptic perception. Haptic perception assimilates sensory information from touch, which cannot just be gathered from looking at an object (like temperature, texture and weight) and from* proprioception, which provides us with spatial and motor information.

Smell Findings conclude that our emotions can directly affect the way we perceive our sense of smell: ‘Our olfactory receptors are directly connected to the limbic system, the most ancient and primitive part of the brain, which is thought to be the seat of emotion... In surveys on reactions to odours, Quantum Health 41

responses show that many of our olfactory likes and dislikes are based purely on emotional associations.’ Social Issues Research Centre – The Smell Report Our tastes and perceptions of smell are also open to fluctuation with our hormones. Sight Our world is filled with colour and shapes. Everything we perceive is all we understand to our reality to what exists. The world as we know it is entirely different to other species. Insects see in ultraviolet bright neon colours emancipate from objects, landing strips on flowers leading to pollen are clearly seen – their world is filled with fluorescence, landing strips and bright colours. A completely different world to ours and yet the same-just different perceptions. We talk of multidimensions that we can not see, perhaps we would if we had the sensory ability. PERCEPTION VERSUS REALITY Science tells us that all the senses of the body are perceived in the brain as electrical signals, suggesting that our brains do not ‘meet head on’ (pardon the pun) with the origin of the matter existing outside of us but rather an electrical copy of it fashioned inside of our brains . It is at this point that we are duped into assuming these copies are instances of real matter outside of us. Everything we see, touch, feel and perceive in the world is electrical signals in our brain. When we see an object, the light particles reflect from it reaching the retina in our eye, here they are converted into electrical signals and transmitted by neurons via the optic nerve to our brain’s visual centre, where they are interpreted back again into a complete whole .The object we see in fact is electrical signals in our brain. Making the only reality that we can cope with; the world perceived in our minds. 42 Quantum Health

The mini YouTube documentary Perception – The Reality beyond matter http://www.youtube. com/watch?v=AqnEGu8VF8Y suggests that if we could take our brains out of our body and keep it alive – place it in a glass aquarium, add a computer connecting the electrical signals of data related to settings such as image, sound and smell to the sensory centres in our brain via electrodes, the brain will perceive the signal, and it will see and live this reality that it perceives. If we sent signals pertaining to our own images such as – sitting at a desk. Our brain would perceive itself as an individual sitting at a desk, this imaginary world would carry on as long as we received from stimulus from the computer. We would never realise that we were only consisting as a brain. It is very easy for us to be deceived into believing our perceptions are real without material corroboration, which is also precisely what happens when one dreams. In a dream a person can go to a party; eat, drink and dance and it is only the moment when they awake from their dream that they realise these things were all only perceptions. Using the principal that we are able to live effortlessly in an unreal world during our dreams, the same logic could be applied to the world we live in, i.e. when we wake up from a dream there is no logical reason for not thinking that we have entered a longer dream which we call ‘real life’. This suggests that we could well be awoken from the life on earth that we think we are living, just as we are awoken from a dream. After all, our brain is matter – nothing but a perception which has been formed by our senses of vision and touch. PERCEPTION AND QUESTIONS OF THE SOUL What is the will then that perceives the senses if it is not the brain? Who is it that says ‘I am’? Could our concept of matter be an illusion and if so, would this indicate towards a truth of a metaphysical matter? The universe we inhabit and the bodies we own would now also have no

physical reality, making the real absolute being, the soul. If the material concept of our world is simply made by perceptions of the aforesaid soul, what is the source of these perceptions? Following this line of inquiry we could come to the possible conclusion that as matter doesn’t have a selfgoverning existence by itself but rather survives as a perception, this perception must be caused by another power, which means that it was created. Following this same line of theory the creation must be continuous as if it was not, what we call matter would simply disappear as easily as switching off a TV. Once again, we come full circle back to the penultimate question “who am I?” It is, after all, a matter of perception.

The lens of time - A matter of perspective W Yuliya Cohen

e all share an interest in understanding why we are so vulnerable to whims of nature and destiny. Can we really know what the future holds? Our ability to navigate the future is currently enjoying a surge of interest that is supported by a growing field of research. Larry Dorsey book on Power of Premonitions is an indication that this interest is entering the mainstream. And the verdict is in! Now there is abundant scientific evidence that people can know about future events before they take place. However, there is some debate about how accurate those predictions really are. I remember many years ago, when I began to explore the future events in my life. One day I was stressing out about a new babysitter. I had arranged for her to take care of my kids starting the following week, but I had a nagging sensation in the pit of my stomach that she would stand me up. Did that mean I needed to look for a backup? What if I was wrong and she showed up, but I had gotten someone else. Then I would be letting her down. I wasn’t sure what to do. My friend and colleague Enke, a young woman from Kazakhstan, who came from a long line of native shamans, watched me with a puzzled look. “Why are you stressing out so much?” she asked. “Why don’t you just check ahead of time? You

44 Quantum Health

know, you can look into the future and see what the outcome will be. I just don’t understand. You work with energies, but you never check ahead. It’s very strange to me that someone like you wouldn’t do that. Me, I always look ahead.” She was making a good point. I had looked into the future as part of my intuitive healing sessions for things my clients would usually ask about – will the relationship eventually work out, or which college or career choice to make. But I hadn’t thought of doing it for myself, when dealing with such daily concerns in my own life as the reliability of childcare. “Ok, so what would

you do in this case?” I asked her. “Tell me how you do it.” “It’s simple”, she said. “In order to investigate the outcome of the event, you need to get the right perspective. For example, imagine stepping outside your house and crossing the street, so that you can see your entire house, and up and down the street. Now extend the timeline to Monday and see whether she is coming down the street, and entering the house. Maybe you can even see her on one of the floors talking to you or the kids.” I visualized as she said, and saw no one. And

when Monday rolled around, the street was as quiet as it had been in my imagination. The babysitter stood me up. She called me early in the morning telling me that she had found another job. This was a letdown, but the kind that highlighted the importance of our ability to decide what to do, based on our reading of the future. Modern physics assures us that the unpredictability of the future is a mirage. Remember my gut feeling that I would be stood up? All of us are continually led and supported with gentle nudges from the universe. The whispers of the future into the present come Quantum Health 45

...the future is already formed and known, and that I could navigate it as freely as the memories of the past events in my life.

through in the form of intuitive subliminal directions. But if you are like me, you may need stronger confirmation. When I imagined the street, I chose the right perspective for viewing the future – one that provided the visual confirmation for something that was too subtle and uncertain to interpret otherwise. I discovered a conscious creative practice I could use, from then on, to confirm unconscious hunches. It was hard for me initially to switch my brain into this new way of thinking. It was giving me quite a nasty headache -- to believe that the future is already formed and known, and that I could navigate it as freely as the memories of the past events in my life.

Choosing a wider lens My lessons on the importance of perspective continued as I worked with Enke. As in many other indigenous cultures, her Kazakh tradition believed that the underlying reasons for many painful family situations and for much physical and emotional suffering can be uncovered by investigating entanglements and blocks in the ancestral family tree structure. Resolving those entanglements and repairing the tree are crucial steps taken towards healing. In other words, the act of repairing a multi-generational past by choosing a different outcome in the past will assure the well-being of the future generations. Together we were spending hours traversing the branches of our clients’ trees looking for the sources, the root causes of their ordeals. Working with the tree was another turning point in my learning the importance of the focused consciousness needed to achieve the desired result. I was thorough and thoughtful in my investigations, yet in comparison to Enke, quite slow. It would happen only too often, that while 46 Quantum Health

I was still scrutinising all the details of the family dynamics on one particular branch, she was already reporting what had happened two or three generations before, having traversed both maternal and paternal branches. “How did you get so much information so fast?” I wondered. “Why are you so slow?” she would respond impatiently. “Please hurry up”, she nudged me. “It seems like you are always looking right under your nose, stuck in one place. But then what you see is small. Pull away, step back, take a bigger perspective and you will see more at once.” The story of six blind men and an elephant teaches us about the degree to which results vary, depending on how we investigate our reality. My friend was recently choosing a new camera – looking for the one with the best lens, he told me. You too can choose to equip your consciousness with the best lens you can master. If your lens provides a golf-ball sized focus, limited only to your immediate experience, you can only act based on that limited awareness. If you have a wider lens of awareness that encompasses not just viewing, but changing, the past, present and future, you have opportunities to act and create the right change at the right source, at the right space and time. Larry Dorsey talks about the fact that the future is not set in stone and fixed. The past, present and future are interconnected. We all know that actions taken in the present can modify the future. Now we are discovering that not only can we predict the future, we can also change it by re-writing and healing the past. Just practice choosing a focus where the past, present and future of your experience all merge into one point of attention.

On The Application of Human Body Field Theory

Using NES and Heart Rate Variability

Jason Siczkowycz (NES practitioner)

ately, there has been more and more discussion of heart rate variability (HRV) as being one of the best testing tools to give information about general health trends. The suggested reason is that HRV testing accurately and objectively reflects the function of the autonomic nervous system (ANS), which includes the sympathetic branch associated with a stress response, and parasympathetic branch associated with a calming response. The ANS is the body’s main control system at the biochemical level, and the system that changes and responds, without our conscious awareness, to the environment. It is what adapts, as necessary, to stressors (whether chemical, physical, or emotional) and changes visceral (organ) function appropriately. Put simply, the autonomic nervous system plays an important

role in helping the body maintain homeostasis, or a constant internal environment. It follows that reduced HRV, and thus reduced autonomic function, may reflect a trend towards disease and away from health. It reflects a general reduction in the ability to self-regulate. The following quote illustrates the broad-ranging affects of reduced HRV: “Autonomic imbalance, characterised by a hyperactive sympathetic system and hypoactive parasympathetic system, is associated with various pathological conditions… autonomic imbalance may be a final common pathway to increased morbidity and mortality from a host of conditions and diseases, including cardiovascular disease” (The relationship of autonomic imbalance, heart rate Quantum Health 47

variability and cardiovascular disease risk factors, The International Journal of Cardiology, May 28, 2010; 141(2): 122-31). Because of the broadranging consequences of reduced HRV/autonomic function, HRV testing can logically be a useful tool in assessing the efficacy of any given therapy, and it is a non-invasive, cost-effective way to do so. As a NES practitioner, I use the NES Provision software to guide my clients as to which Infoceutical remedies are likely to be the most useful in order to help repair distortions in the human biofield. Bringing balance to the biofield is intended to support the body’s own selfregulating abilities. Anecdotally, I’ve seen, by far, the most positive reports of symptomatic improvement with this method than any other I’ve used. I recently started using HRV in my holistic practice to see what effect Infoceutical protocols would have on it. I was not disappointed. While this is simply an unofficial observational study I did in my own practice, I was more than impressed with the results, and will continue to do HRV testing. I had eight clients in whom I ran an HRV scan, initiated a NES Infoceutical Protocol, and retested them in approximately one month. Six out of eight cases showed a positive trend in sympathetic/parasympathetic balance (in almost all cases a movement towards normal in both branches of the autonomic nervous system, whether they were high or low). For context purposes, the movement was, in some cases, a small increment within what is considered a normal range, but a positive movement nonetheless. I’m happy to say that my own HRV tests are quite good, reflecting autonomic balance most of the time. However, I wanted to do a pre and post experiment with an Infoceutical, so I waited until I had a test that reflected a higher sympathetic (stress) score and slightly lower parasympathetic (relaxation) score. As per my NES Provision scan that I ran on the same day, I took the ESR remedy (Emotional Stress Release), since that body-field distortion was “in the red”. I waited only 5 minutes, and ran another HRV, 48 Quantum Health

which showed a completely normal sympathetic and parasympathetic score. The ESR Infoceutical bioenergetically correlates to the cerebral medulla field. What is amazing about the positive improvements in many of the HRV scans that I ran, is that the Infoceutical protocol was not necessarily “targeting” the autonomic nervous system. For example, the focus might have been correcting body-field distortions bioenergetically correlated to immune or digestive fields. In two of the cases, specifically, Infoceuticals were suggested that correlated to the liver field. The positive response suggests that supporting the coherence of the human body-field, regardless of where it is targeted, supports the body’s regulatory ability. This corroborates what double-blind and placebocontrolled testing has also shown relating to the use of Infoceuticals (reduction in stress scores and improvements in various symptoms), which can be viewed at NES Health’s website (neshealth.com). What is striking about HRV testing is that it is apparently impervious to placebo effect (because the ANS operates “unconsciously”). It does not respond to the belief that it will show better. HRV testing, and thus autonomic function, does respond to breathing exercises and many methods that help support emotional stress processing. Dr. Roger Callahan (Thought Field Therapy) has brought needed awareness to the usefulness of HRV testing and the beneficial effects of stress-reduction techniques. From a clinical perspective, I have found HRV testing to be useful for many reasons, but the primary one is that it is motivational for those clients that may not see a dramatic change in their symptoms in the first protocol or two. While I realise that symptoms either respond or they don’t, when the HRV shows a positive trend, we can objectively say that autonomic function, and thus regulatory ability, is moving in the right direction. This greatly helps reinforce what we’re doing. One of the greatest unknowns when working with clients is the length of time it will take to provide general balance to their respective body-field distortions.
