MEET THE

MARQUIS FAMILY What is… Your name? Patty Marquis Your childrens’ names? Sierra, (Tricia and Tyler, who are both in college). Your dog's name? Sophia. When did you move to Harmony? June 2018. What street do you live on? Middlebrook. What do you love most about Harmony? Nature aspect. I love getting up every day and listening to the birds and watching the wildlife as they make their way through the woods and the ponds. Taking the boats around the lake is yet another amazing opportunity to watch nature at its finest. What are your kids’ favorite things about Harmony? My youngest loves playing with her friends. The entire neighborhood watches out for each other and acts as though they are one big family. My son absolutely loves the golf course when he comes back to visit and loves the idea of having a house on the course. My oldest daughter really enjoys her morning runs through the picturesque neighborhood. Where did you move from? Winter Springs. What do you miss most? The versatility of the restaurants. I would love to see more choices around here such as Thai food, etc. What is your background? I was born in Ohio, but moved to Maryland as a young child. I found myself back in Ohio during my later high 2 Harmony Life Magazine | June 2019

school years, where I graduated in the small town of Bellefontaine. I didn’t travel very much as a child with the exception of our family lake home in Michigan, which is my favorite place to be. Our cottage brings many memories since it has been in our family since the early 1920’s. While I enjoyed living in Ohio, 2011 brought my family a life changing event as we moved to the beautiful Sunshine State. My three wonderful children, who are my world, took the plunge with me and moved to the Central Florida area. Educating has been my passion since I was five. I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. During my career, I babysat, worked in child care facilities, operated my own in-home learning center and taught in the public schools until 2013. Upon my departure, traveling became a big part of my life. I began flying across the country looking at Reggio Emilia schools and forming collaborative/strategic relationships with educators world-wide. In September of 2014, I became the founder and co-owner of Creative Inspiration Journey School in Winter Springs, Florida. My role there gave me an opportunity to hold management positions such as Executive Director, Marketing Director, Human Resources Director, and Curriculum Director. I was able to apply many management skills that include but are not limited to: parent/student/staff liaison, fundraising/events coordinator, staff development and training, and curriculum development. Our family-owned preschool/early elementary program quickly gained recognition due to our unique curriculum and philosophy. We accomplished many milestones that I am proud of, including becoming one of the few testing sites in the country for educational learning products at Lakeshore Learning. In addition, I was afforded the opportunity through invitation to be a guest speaker at the Orlando Disney Convention for the National Association of Gifted Students in November of 2016. I am excited to bring a world-renowned quality educational program to Central Florida and enthusiastic to become a part of the growing community in St. Cloud. Collaboration is the key to success, and I look forward to learning together with you and your child. What is a good story about Harmony? I will always remember the time when we first moved in and the neighbors were concerned about the white van parked on the street for a while. They thought it was a “creeper van”. We thought we would lighten up the

neighborhood feel so we decorated the van for Halloween as a creeper van as a joke. The community seemed to appreciate the humor. What is unusual or unique about Harmony, in comparison to your previous home? The natural surroundings and all of the wild life that we get to experience on a daily basis. What is your favorite weekend activity? I really enjoy the boats. We have a cottage on a lake in Michigan that has been in our family since the early 1900’s so the lake really makes me feel at home. Do you have a cause or business that you would like to promote? We are opening a very unique charter school in St. Cloud which is what brought me to the area. I am a co-founder of the school. The school is a pre-K-5 Tuition FREE public charter school that will be opening in August. Our mission statement is as follows: Creative Inspiration Journey School of St. Cloud provides a groundbreaking, organized Reggioinspired approach that offers interdisciplinary learning, through project-based experiences. We differentiate and enhance instruction through “gifted teaching methods”, that prepare every student for success in school and life. Our curriculum features environmental responsibility through an agricultural component and reliance on repurposed materials. We value compassion, mutual respect, creative and critical thinking, and collaboration, while recognizing the relevance of our actions locally, nationally and globally. www.cijsstcloud.org. What do you do for fun? My favorite activities are boating, the beach and the pool. What is your favorite TV Show? “Heartland.” I am a huge fan of family bonding and nature. This show has them both. Who is your role model and why? My mother is my biggest role model. I grew up in an underprivileged community as a very young child, and my mother worked very hard to show us what it took to make a different life for ourselves and our family. She has her doctorate now and I have a specialization degree. I managed to begin a small private school starting with four kids, growing that to the charter school you see today across from WaWa on 192. The biggest thing she taught us was that no matter how far you get in life, you need to always maintain the strong morals and family values that you started with. My sister and I opened the school together. n

FIVE SUMMERTIME PROPERTY MAINTENANCE TIPS By Jeanine Corcoran

A

s summer time approaches and children, parents and grandparents plan their vacation and summertime activities, it is also a good time to look at your home and plan on performing some maintenance to ready your property for the summer. Here are five items that need attention during our hot Florida summer: 1. Air Conditioner: Changing your AC filters monthly is a must but be sure to do a maintenance check on your AC unit. Your AC unit is working extra hard to keep you cool and there is nothing worse than having your unit break down when it is balmy.

4. Stucco: Small cracks in your stucco happens over time. Rain gets into even the smallest hair line crack and navigate its way through the concrete and into your home. It can also cause damage to your stucco. Seal those cracks to prevent damage and costly repairs. 5. Hurricane Preparedness: Hurricane Season is June 1st through November 30th. When preparing your hurricane kit, let’s not forget about your home. Be sure to reinforce your garage doors if possible, check all windows and inspect your roof. When a hurricane is coming, be sure to take in all outside items including patio furniture and plant pots. Be prepared.

ensure they are spraying all areas of your lawn and shrubs. There is a lot of stress on lawns and shrubs with the sun beating down by foreseeing any problems before they happen. Sprinkler heads are inexpensive and easy to replace and can save you hundreds of dollars.

For many of us, summertime is all about taking a break from our busy lives and spending time with our families. Consider spending time preparing your home for the upcoming months with the above checklist.

3. Trees: Don’t forget summertime equals thunderstorms. Take the time to look at your trees and tree limbs. Trim those weak limbs so they don’t end up falling and damaging yours or your neighbor’s property.

CHOOSE HAPPY THIS SUMMER By Stephanie Milfeld

A

s summer is upon us, so is swimsuit season. You know the time of year when its unbearably hot and all your kids want to do is play in the water and all you want is A/C or to be in the water yourself. So let me begin by saying, I hate the beach. OK, OK I don’t HATE the beach—I hate the beach with my kids. I hate packing all of the crap to keep them busy to have fun, lugging it through the sand, getting sand in my food, and my husband...well he hates the sand period. That being said we just purchased a Water Park annual pass for the family. Although I was super pumped because I love the water park, that meant I needed to purchase a new swimsuit (insert scary music). I found a cute suit from a friend of mine that was high waisted, had a flowy top that covered my midsection, full bum coverage and held everything in place, which makes it perfect for playing with the kids—and it was cheap (SCORE!). We arrive and before long it’s time for the youngest to take a nap. As I was rock-

ing her to sleep I began looking around, from the little kid’s section of the park, (let’s face it, we rarely make it to the beachy wave poolside with two little ones.) As I sit in two tiny chairs facing each other so I can lift my feet up, I think, THIS IS LIFE. I eat my uncrustables and cheese balls we packed, I see other moms in the same type of belly covering bathing suits, dad’s with bellies that hang a little over the top of their waistband, always one parent sitting in the shade with a sleeping or eating child while the other is off with another child, there is a kid crying somewhere but no one is judging. We are all at that stage, in this together. The kids are laughing and smiling and they don’t care if mom thinks she’s chubby in her suit, they love that she is pushing them down the small raft ride for the 100th time and enjoying every second of it. They care that we are PRESENT! That we are with them in the lazy river laughing at the waterfall and lounging. They are enjoying the time spent with us, and that is truly what matters most. The memories won’t be of what you looked like so much as to how they felt while they were doing something WITH you.

You don’t need to be smaller, smoother, tighter... to have the best summer! BE HAPPIER. And since happiness is a feeling, its a choice. And that means it’s available to us WHENEVER WE CHOOSE. Choose happy this summer. Celebrate all there is to celebrate and make memories with your kids because, in the end, that’s all that matters. Every purchase made at Z and Q – A Children's Boutique located at 1037 New York Ave., Downtown St. Cloud, gives back to a cause, community or organization. Z and Q also offers a wide variety of classes and events, so check out the events calendar. Stop in Monday-Friday, 10am–7pm and Saturdays, 11–7pm. n

HROA & CDD MEETING HIGHLIGHTS By Steve Berube Chairman HCDD and President HROA

T

HE HROA Board of Directors held its regular meeting on May 29; about 20 residents attended.

Amongst other things, the Board approved my requested 5% reduction in dues for FY2020 with the budget including a 5% INCREASE in Social Activities spending. Jennifer Harmony has done an excellent job of managing her current budget and is on target to come in under budget this year despite having put on a full palette of well-attended and well-received activities. So, because residents seem happy with the Activities, we added more funds which should allow more ambitious events. The subject of maintenance of private landsspecifically the cutting of grass—was discussed. In essence, Association Solutions told us that if open land is intended to have homes on it, then the lot(s) must be maintained to a reasonable standard. Commercial, or non-residential lots are not within HROA jurisdiction and so are maintained to a standard based on how good a neighbor their owner wants to be. We also added $5,000 to be spent on security. We will be hiring off-duty Deputies to patrol in 4 hour shifts at random hours. This up-closeand-personal-attention from Deputies might quell some of the minor criminal activities that we've heard about. Those deputies most likely will also be seeing a lot of less-than-acceptabledriving-behaviors being displayed. That should be a positive as well. The Board agreed to "advance" $3300 to the Garden Committee for a much-needed shed replacement. Advance because the Garden must stand on its own meaning income must exceed expenses. As the $3300 will exceed this year's income, the advance will be tracked and paid back using future income. The Nature & Animal Committee is also running under budget but needs help in 2 critical areas: the first being more volunteer assistance needed for ongoing Walking Trail maintenance. These work days are normally posted on Facebook but very few people show up to help. The second area of need has to do with feral cats which have seemingly exploded in population. Volunteers are needed to assist with trapping

these cats so they can be spayed/neutered. Obviously, the finances noted above means the books look good. It is also notable that our delinquent receivables are now just under $8,000 meaning over $55,000 in delinquencies have been collected since this HROA Board came under resident control about 20 months ago. The CDD Meeting followed on May 30 attended by about 15 residents. It began with a short, closed session during which the District Attorneys updated us on litigation involving a previous landscaper. We tabled a proposal for new sod at the H1 playground pending more info on its scope. We also tabled a discussion on clear-cutting of pond banks mainly due to time limitations. A significant discussion regarding CDD (public) maintenance of private lands ensued. This was a continuation of previous discussions about this and regards lands owned by Harmony Retail, LLC. For the complete discussion on this matter, visit the Harmony Resident Forum on Facebook and look for Dan Leet’s video of the CDD meeting. Some might remember that we gave SERVELLO a contract for “intensive care” of the Soccer Field & Blazing Star playground fields. The Bermuda turf there was damaged by a previous landscaper and this was a last-ditch effort to revive it. SERVELLO agreed that it has not worked as well as expected and agreed to terminate its contract for that service. In response, they will provide quotes to replace the Bermuda as well as surrounding turf. We approved an upgrade to the large dog park to add pavers in the shed area there. This is a continuation of previous upgrades to the grounds of both Cat Brier dog parks. If you haven’t visited lately, go take a look. District Manager Kristin Suit informed us that collection of fees are largely complete and overall spending remains under anticipated levels. The Supervisor of Elections Office reported that there are 1,698 voters in Harmony. There was no further discussion of the FY2020 Budget which includes a 2.08% CDD Fee reduction. That budget is headed for a July 2018 Public Hearing ahead of its final approval.

The Commercial Parking area expansion is continuing with the approval of installation of 6” of shell rock base over the 2 acre expansion area; this new base will not exceed $68,000 in cost. That will be followed by a fence to be discussed likely next month. Parking rates for the coming fiscal year were also discussed; because of the expansion and subsequent resizing including some new sizes, a different comparison of the new rates is not possible. But, we now will offer very small slots as well as very large slots. The very small are less costly than before, and the very large are more than before. However, owners of very large equipment will appreciate the new layout which is set up for easy access and maneuverability of LARGE equipment such as motor homes and tandem trailers. Comparisons of pricing for large slots with local storage lots shows that we are significantly below local pricing. On the other hand, Garden Rates are all decreasing. This is because occupancy of the spaces there has been low. The consensus seems to be that rates were too high so, down they go. Time will tell. It is important to note that both the Garden & Parking are usersupported facilities; meaning they must be individually self-sustaining. There were also minor changes made to Dog Park Rules. Along with the Budget, the Parking & Garden Rates and Dog Park Rules changes only take effect after a Public Hearing during the July 2018 CDD Meeting. Lastly, Supervisor Kassel brought forward a Trail Maintenance proposal during the Supervisor Request portion of the meeting. As this is a multi-faceted proposal with many complexities, and considering the late hour, I asked that the portions of the proposal that would not be hosted on CDD land be moved to the HROA for further action as that organization has a simpler ability for actions on private property. Those changes left mainly a significant change involving moving a trail from Developer to CDD land. My belief is that some Engineering and Permitting might be required for this, so I asked that she contact the District Engineer for guidance there. Once the forward direction is clear, this will come back for discussion. Long read—lots of action…Thanks reading…see you next month!! n

DID YOU KNOW?

D

By Kerul Kassel PHD Hamony CDD Board Member

COURTESY KERUL KASSEL

ID YOU KNOW that Harmony was designed to promote the peaceful coexistence of human and animal residents within the community while striking a balance between the preservation, use and enjoyment of Harmony’s natural areas? While retaining natural areas, Harmony is part of a human-dominated landscape where our actions profoundly affect the welfare of wild animals. Domestic animals are sometimes what profoundly affect the welfare of wild animals. As we are a pet-friendly community, while we have rules and policies in addition to those of the county and state that govern how we manage our pets, lots of residents aren’t aware of them. One rule is that cats should be kept indoors due to the host of parasites and dangers of the outdoors. Outside cats are also a danger to wildlife. Nationwide, outdoor cats kill billions of wild birds each year…yes, billions with a “b”. Other animals are also prey, and there are plenty of fleas, ticks and disease here, not to mention other predators (dogs, alligators, other cats). It’s not only our own cats, though…sometimes people drop their nolonger-wanted cats in Harmony. Or they move away but leave the cats behind. The Harmony Nature and Animal Committee has helped resident volunteers control our “homeless cat” situation, by providing food, lending traps, and paying for vaccination and spay/neuter

veterinary costs, as well as some other support. BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP! One resident who helped us trap a number of feral cats and get them neutered over the last few years has moved out of Harmony. Feral cat colonies can form quickly if action isn’t taken promptly to prevent litter after litter. WE NEED SOME VOLUNTEERS around the community to help us trap cats to be neutered. This usually requires feeding them daily over several weeks or longer to get them used to eating in the open traps until they are comfortable enough and the traps can be set to corral them so they can be brought to the vet. Our policy is “TNR”, meaning Trap, Neuter, Release. We don’t euthanize or relocate, though we do try to help find homes for cats that might adapt to being indoors. In case you’re interested in doing this on your own, be aware that the cat food needs to be taken indoors at night, otherwise your traps will be feeding (and trapping) raccoons, opossums, armadillos, and maybe even rats. Yikes! It’s not very time intensive to trap cats, and it’s a big contribution to our community. If you’re a cat lover and want to help our Harmony cats stay healthy, happy, and not endangering themselves or our wildlife, contact me at kerul@me.com. n
