COVER STORY

What is your favorite weekend activity? On weekends we enjoy grilling on our back porch and watching football during football season. Is there a neighbor experience you are most proud of? We love that our neighbors are so considerate and hospitable. They have all been very friendly and welcomed us into the community. They are also attentive and if there is an issue that is brought to their attention, they let us know about it. Our one neighbor has been great warning us about snake sightings! Do you do any charity or non-profit work? R We are both active in our local respective fraternity (Omega Psi Phi) and sorority (Alpha Kappa Alpha) graduate chapters which allow us to participate in a number of community service events.

LYONS/LENOIR FAMILY What is… Your name? Jarian Lyons Your spouse’s name? Dazi Lenoir Your childrens’ names? Nasir (9), Madelyn (7), Lena (6) and Russell (4). When did you move to Harmony? August 2018 What street do you live on? Buttonbush Loop What do you love most about Harmony? We love the aesthetics of the neighborhood as it provides serenity in a way that is different from any other place that we have lived in Central Florida. We enjoy taking walks and jogs and seeing the different types of trees that are present in the community which remind us both of where we were raised. Having lived in Tallahassee, Harmony feels more like South Georgia than Central Florida. What are your kids’ favorite things about Harmony? Our kids love the parks and being able to ride their bikes and scooters on the quiet streets. 2 Harmony Life Magazine | May 2019

Where did you move from? We moved from the Remington area. What is your background? My wife and I are both attorneys. We both attended college in Tallahassee, Florida. I am a graduate of Florida A & M University and my wife is a graduate of Florida State University. I am originally from Pensacola, Florida and my wife was born and raised in Rock Hill, South Carolina. What is a good story about Harmony? We actually were unaware of Harmony until we came to look at the house that we purchased and were pleasantly surprised by not only the character of our home, but the individuality and character of the community itself. What is unusual or unique about Harmony, in comparison to your previous home? Not being from Central Florida, and with my wife and I both being from places that have seasons, we love that the neighborhood has a unique feel and that we do not feel like we live in Florida.

What do you do for fun? Our family enjoys playing “Just Dance” on our Xbox, traveling to new places, and going to Sea World/Busch Gardens with our annual passes. Who is your role model and why? My mother and Dazi’s grandmother are our role models. They both instilled in us pride, responsibility, work ethic, independence, the importance of family, and most importantly a foundation in our faith. What is the last movie that you have seen in the theatre? The last movie that we saw at the theatre was “The Upside” starring Kevin Hart, Bryon Cranston and Nicole Kidman. What is your favorite TV Show? Our family enjoys watching “Family Feud.” What else should we know about you or your family? We are members of The Experience Christian Center in Orlando where we are active in our church. I am a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council at Florida A & M University (FAMU) College of Law where I attended law school. My wife is a member of the National Board of Directors of the Florida State University Alumni Association, which is the chief governing body of the of the alumni association, representing the interests of the association’s members and constituents. n

ith summertime approaching, we are certainly feeling the temperature rise outside. We tend to lean towards water or inside activities during these months to beat the heat, especially in the middle of the day. One way you might do this is by visiting the brand new Sensory Bar at Z and Q. Sensory activities facilitate exploration and naturally encourage children to use scientific processes while they play, create, investigate and explore. This one-of-a-kind kid-friendly bar invites children to use their imagination through sensory play. Children are able to come into our store and choose the color box they prefer, the color sensory dough that catches their eye, and a variety of items that meet their fancy. It is great for all ages of children who are not still putting small objects in their mouth. Z and Q also has pre-made themed boxes if you are looking to purchase one for a friend or family member.

How do you play with a sensory box?

That’s totally up to each individual child. There is no right or wrong way to play with it (other

than maybe putting pieces in your mouth—ya don’t do that.) That is the magic of open-ended, sensory play! Each child will use their box in a different way that fills their natural need for creativity.

Why is sensory play important?

Here are just a few reasons: • Research shows that sensory play builds nerve connections in the brain’s pathways, which lead to the child’s ability to complete more complex learning tasks. • Sensory play supports language development, cognitive growth, fine and gross motor skills, problem-solving skills, and social interaction. • This type of play aids in developing and en hancing memory • It is calming for kids, as it helps them regulate their internal discomfort, whether that dis comfort was boredom, restlessness, or some other type of agitation. • It often involves using and building fine mo tor skills by exploring things using pinching, pouring, and lacing movements that help with things like writing, shoe-tying, button ing and zipping, among other things.

• A sensory box is child driven. The child directs the play, imagines the situations, and deter mines the tasks. Sensory boxes provide the most amazing opportunity for truly inde pendent, uninterrupted play. It’s also why I stand way back when my kids are playing with a box—I don’t want to disrupt the learn ing that’s going on. Every purchase made at Z and Q – A Children's Boutique (including a sensory box), located at 1037 New York Ave., Downtown St. Cloud, gives back to a cause, community or organization. Z and Q also offers a wide variety of classes and events, so check out the events calendar. Stop in Monday-Friday, 10am-7pm and Saturdays, 11-7pm. n

CDD MEETING AND BUDGET UPDATES By Steve Berube Chairman HCDD and President HROA

T

he CDD held a Budget Workshop on Thursday, April 25th, for the purpose of setting the Fiscal 2020 Budget. Some of the highlights, if the Board gives final approval, are: your dues will be decreasing by 2.08%. That’s not a misprint but you might ask: 2.08%? Yes. Because that’s the exact amount we increased your fees 5 years ago to fund (in part) the streetlight buyouts which are now complete. So, as promised, we are dropping your fees to that previous level. If memory serves me correctly, that’s 10 years that fees have not increased—despite the CDD providing an ever-increasing range and level of services. Additionally, the budget proposes funding to add another man to Field Services staff primarily to enable cleaning of ALL sidewalks in Harmony; and to provide salary increases plus anticipated additional benefits costs for that group. Also included are funds for play equipment in Neighborhood “O” and dog-agility-equipment in the Dog Park. Funds are dedicated to cover the debt service required should we acquire Buck Lake and adjacent lands. Additional funds are allocated to increased costs of landscaping, electricity, water and sewer. Finally, if we stick to the budget, we will add nearly $57,000 to Reserves at year end. The workshop was followed by the regular monthly meeting. Mr. Steve Fusilier (Fusilier Realty) gave a presentation to the audience suggesting that the CDD should spend significant amounts of money improving landscaping, changing the way ponds are maintained and perhaps restoring the pond fountains to functionality. Some of these changes would take place on his private property and others on publicly-owned property. The Board will discuss his requests which very well could improve the look and feel of the neighborhood, at significant cost, but it is highly unlikely that any CDD funds will be spent on private property. Mr. Fusilier was joined by one other resident in requesting a policy reversal; that being to return meeting minutes to verbatim form rather than the summary format that began a few months ago.

A recent topic of discussion has been access to our website by disabled individuals. This is a still-developing topic in the law but achieving such compliance is exceedingly expensive. So, our legal counsel is following this carefully and we will follow his guidance. That leads to the next topic which is the streaming of meetings. There was a request to purchase a higher quality camera to improve both video and sound quality. If we do that, the public-records-retention law would be triggered meaning the video of every meeting would have to be stored by Inframark, our management company. While there would be a cost for that, more ominous is the likely requirement that the video would have to be captioned so as to comply with the ADA requirements. It remains to be seen where this ends up. We were provided the results of our FY18 audit which was clean. We also approved moving forward with a survey of the Commercial Vehicle Parking area expansion site to be followed by additional quotes to level the land and expand the fenced compound. As this is written, I am awaiting documents from the Developer regarding the Buck Lake acquisition which means not much has changed with that. Lastly, our income remains strong and spending is within the current year expectations so all is good on that front. Thanks for reading—see you next month!! n May 2019 | Harmony Life Magazine 7

BOARD OF DIRECTORS’ MEETING DATE

The next meeting will be the Annual Budget Meeting, the date will be May 29th at 6:00 P.M in the banquet room of the Golf Club. We look forward to seeing you there.

VIOLATION NOTICES

From time to time you may receive a notice asking that you take care of an issue with your property. Our notices do have a general description of the issue to guide you and also a small photograph. If you have questions and require more details, please email and let us know. We are happy to help all that we can. Please do not ignore the notice if you don’t know exactly what it is for, this causes issues further down the line.

LANDSCAPING

We are now in peak growing season and we suggest that lawns and yards are maintained weekly.

to water twice per week and your grass will need it unless there is rain every day. • Fertilizer & Pest Prevention - It is suggested that you feed / fertilize your lawn regularly to keep it healthy. Pest control is also a must. We understand that many of these things cost money however, replacing your whole yard costs much more! If you have a garage at the back of your property, please do not forget that landscaping should be taken care of just the same as the front. Grass should be weed free, mowed and edged, flower beds and driveways free of weeds and driveways pressure washed. If you have a lot of leaves on your property, please rake them and dispose of them with your yard waste and not blow them into the street. The best way to solve this issue is if we all work together.

FOR OUR DOG OWNERS

We all love our pets and like to take them out in the community. Just a reminder for the few dog owners who do not always use leashes – Having a dog on a leash is State Law and you can receive a fine. Please use the leash every time you take your dog out. And don’t forget to scoop the poop. The CDD provides bags and special trash cans for this.

TRASH CANS

Per your Association documents and guidelines trash cans must be stored away completely out of sight. This means in your garage or a fenced back yard. This rule also applies if you live in a property with a garage in the back of the property (alley way access), you may not store your trash can in this area. The trash can must still be stored in your garage or in your fenced back yard.

BIKES, SCOOTERS AND TOYS

We have seen an increase in bikes, scooters and toys being left out in yards, on porches and driveways. These items should be stored away from view when not in use. Not only is it unsightly but it can also lead to theft. We understand that kids can be forgetful, feel free to show them this reminder to help you out!

COMMERCIAL & RECREATIONAL VEHICLES

Don’t forget to edge along the driveway, sidewalk and flower beds.

Please don’t forget that you may not park trailers, recreational vehicles, etc. outside or on your property. These vehicles must be parked outside of the community.

A tip to help with weeds—add mulch! Mulch also gives flower beds a finished look.

PARKING

We have noticed that many lawns are not looking as green and lush as they could. Here are a few tips to help you take care of your St. Augustine lawn: • Cut Length - Do not cut too short! The optimal cut length for this grass is approximately 3 inches. • Watering - Look at your watering schedule. You are usually allowed

Several streets in Harmony are very narrow and end in cul-de-sacs; with cars parked on the street, the trash trucks cannot travel on the

street, never mind make the turn in the cul-de-sac. So, they tend to bypass the entire street. Parking on the street not only detracts from property value, but it also greatly diminishes the curb appeal of any community. It is also a huge safety concern for everyone in the community, especially our young children. In an effort to help curb this activity, The Association will solicit assistance from the Sheriff ’s office to issue tickets for various on street parking violations, i.e. blocking sidewalks, parking against the flow of traffic, parking too close to a traffic control device, etc. For more information on parking violations, please refer to Florida Statute 316.1945

DID YOU KNOW?

COURTESY KERUL KASSEL

D

By Kerul Kassel PHD Hamony CDD Board Member

ID YOU KNOW that Harmony was designed to promote the peaceful coexistence of human and animal residents within the community while striking a balance between the preservation, use and enjoyment of Harmony’s natural areas? Underlying these objectives are the values of fostering a respect for the land, the protection of wildlife and the sensible use and enjoyment of Harmony’s abundant natural and manmade amenities by its residents.

It bears reminding that if you see an alligator, keep your distance, and never, EVER feed alligators because it is dangerous (to both you and the alligator) and illegal. When fed, alligators can overcome their natural wariness and learn to associate people with food. Dog owners should keep their animals on a leash and away from the water because pets can resemble an alligator’s natural prey, and several loose dogs have been taken by Harmony alligators over the years.

Did you know alligators move freely between our lakes, ponds, and wetland areas? The American alligator is Florida’s state reptile and is an important part of Florida’s wetland habitats. It’s also found throughout the state in swamps and slow-moving rivers, too.

Last year an alligator was pulled from a residential area pond and killed. Reports were that people had been feeding it and it had gotten too peoplefriendly. Someone reported it and FWC came out to “remove” it. That alligator paid the ultimate price for human misbehavior. If you see people feeding wildlife, please take a photo or video and report the incident to Fish and Wildlife at http://myfwc.com/contact/wildlife-alert/.

At this time of year, during spring, you may notice that alligators are more active and visible. That’s because they are cold-blooded, so as temperatures rise, so does their metabolism, and they begin seeking prey. While alligator bite incidents resulting in serious injury are rare in Florida, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) recommends taking precautions when having fun in and around the water.

We are blessed with an abundance of green space and wild creatures. Keep a respectful distance, stay hidden, even, and enjoy their presence for longer. n

Alligators are most active at night. I once saw a really big one during a run right on the street at six in the morning—what a surprise! Swim only in Harmony’s pools, and not in any ponds or lakes! You’ve probably noticed that alligators like to bask in the sun on the banks of a pond. That’s because they control their body temperature that way.

MARRIAGE SEMINAR By Dr. Danny B. Purvis President of Growth Project and Pastor of Harmony Community Church

I

was a Navy Chaplain for 20 years. During that time I was fortunate enough to do a lot of neat things in places all around the world. I served at the White House for a while. I launched an F-18 off of an aircraft carrier. I got a behind the scenes tour of the Vatican with members of the Swiss Guard. I’ve stood inside of Gaudi’s La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. And that’s just a few of the neat things I was able to do over a two-decade career. But I have to say, one of the most rewarding endeavors I was blessed to be a part of were the marriage retreats I led throughout my time in the Navy. In fact, the last year and a half of my Navy career was spent in a job where all I did was marriage retreats as a part of the Navy’s CREDO program. Nearly every weekend I would take anywhere from 12-25 couples to a hotel for a three-day marriage retreat. I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed doing that job and helping folks with what is arguably one of the greatest institutions God ever created: marriage. Now, I am no longer in the Navy, but I am still invested in helping marriages be all that they can be. So, I have taken the retreats I did for the Navy and have made the seminar available to Harmony. On May 18, 2019 Harmony Community Church, in cooperation with our virtual discipleship ministry Growth Project, will be sponsoring the Becoming One marriage seminar. This seminar is a one-day version of our Becoming One Retreat Weekend designed to deliver the same incredible information in a shorter format. As I said, I have been leading marriage retreats for more than 20 years with

hundreds of married couples all around the country. Now, I get to bring it to Harmony.

can certainly give you the tools to avoid those troubles in the future.

This one-day seminar will provide us with a fresh, new look at the very first institution God ever created. In fact, God created marriage before He even created the church. This event will allow us to see how God views marriage and how He wants us to view it…and enjoy it. We will answer such questions as: Where does this conflict between husbands and wives come from in the first place? What role does personality play in a marriage? What are the most common relationship killers (including the most dangerous one people never think of)? How can we have the marriage God intended for us to have? And what role does forgiveness play in a marriage?

You may be wondering about the cost. I really want this to be a help to the community. The cost is negligible. Ten dollars per couple and five dollars per individual. And that is really just to offset the food and refreshments we will offer.

I know what you may be thinking. This is just like any other marriage seminar out there. Well, it’s not. I promise you that you will walk away from this with a fresh perspective on marriage and that you will see this amazing institution in a way that you’ve never seen it before. You may be thinking that you don’t need this because your marriage is fine, it’s not in distress. This seminar is not designed for marriages that are in severe distress. In fact, this is for people who have been married for 5 years or 55 years…who are about to get married… who think they might one day get married… or who are just interested in it. If you would like to see a few reactions to the seminar please go to www.growthproject.org and click on the Becoming One tab. Coming to this seminar is not an indication that you are in trouble, but it

Here is what the day will look like. We will start at 9 a.m. and go until about 4:30 p.m. We will provide lunch, and snacks will be available throughout the day. You will receive all seminar materials and we will be giving away a copy of my book, The Marriage Pyramid: Pathway to a Godly Marriage. Not bad for 10 bucks. If you’re interested, here is what I need from you. I need you to sign up for the seminar ahead of time with your name and an email address. There is a personality inventory I want you to complete prior to the seminar so that you can get all of the value you can from that module. I will need your contact info to get you that link. You can pay the seminar fee on the day of the event when you sign in. And I would love to get feedback from you once the event is over. That’s it. To sign up, simply email me at danny@ growthproject.org, or call me at 863-6049631. Don’t let this amazing opportunity pass you by. I’m excited about this…I hope you are as well. Let’s discover together the best way to have the marriage God intended for us to have. See you on May 18th. n
