lex Lowes enjoyed double victories in his home eighth round of MCEBSB at Cadwell Park to both move back into second place in the overall standings. He also added six precious podium credit points to his growing tally as underlined his challenge for the crown once the Showdown sequence of races begin at the next round at Assen. Lowes, riding the Samsung Honda, in doubling his victory tally for the season, is now only eight podium credit scores down on the defending three-times title winner Shane Byrne who took second and fourth places aboard his Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki at the Lincolnshire circuit, enough to maintain his lead in the standings. Unluckiest rider last time out was Aussie Josh Bookes who, having taken a solid third place in the first of the two races, was always in contention, at the same time thrilling the crowd with his high-leaping style as he crested the Mountain, in the second. He nosed ahead of Lowes on the final lap, but moments later he was down and out, his determined move counting for nothing.

Those three riders are qualified as ‘titleBut, neither of the leading duo can fighters’ but there is still all to fight for in take anything for granted as the Cadwell terms of who joins them in the elite six. The race winners Ben Wilson and Billy Cadwell Park races provided mixed fortunes McConnell are moving into contention for those in contention although James for a final push to the top. And Ryuichi Kiyonari, like Byrne, in which Adam Jenkinson with a fourth gunning for a record fourth BSB title, racked place extended his advantage over up points with seventh and fifth places to go Hudson Kennaugh who was forced out of nearer to making the cut. the race with an engine problem. ow he is back and the stakes are high as he battles for points and with them a place among the six riders who become the ‘title-fighters’ in the ‘showdown’ sequence of seven races that decided who will be the MCE-BSB Champion. ‘This is my favourite round of the year,’ said Kirkham. ‘It is the first place that I ever rode and it is my favourite because it is so fast and it suits my riding style, but to get the best time, it is essential to get it right going into the first corner, and then it flows.’ Kirkham has raced the circuit in various

championships including Superstock 1000, with a pair of second places in 2007, and now in Superbikes, and with the stakes so high he will be using his local knowledge to the full. He describes riding the Grand Prix circuit. ‘Going into Redgate, out wide, coming back across – get that corner right and you are set up all of the way through to Coppice, the first sector will then flow. ‘On to Craner Curves and into the Old Hairpin – this is fast flowing downhill and a real challenge and for me the strongest

part of the track, getting the corner speed right for the Old Hairpin. Set the thing up right and you can overtake at the Old Hairpin, nipping underneath. ‘Then, under Starkeys Bridge, shortshifting out of the Old Hairpin, running over the kerb on the inside of Schwantz and then it is a flat out approach into McLeans. From there to Coppice is fairly straight-forward though don’t be too hot into Coppice. There is a double apex on the way out and a lot of people slide and drift there – you have to get it lined up correctly.

ALEX LOWES WINNER: BSB ‘The straight is fast and then it is into the second sector which is completely different. They altered the Foggy Esses a couple of years ago and now you can take it much faster than before, using third gear instead of second. You go into the Esses as hot as you can without sacrificing anything on the way out. ‘On to the Melbourne Hairpin and you have to be good on the brakes, get stopped and then fire it out, making sure that no-one gets underneath you, then the climb up to Goddards and the approach there is the same as for Melbourne. ‘Then up through the gears and onto the start-finish straight, dashing into Redgate, concentrating on getting that corner right to set up and another fast and flowing lap of the Grand Prix circuit.’ Kirkham is ready for the fight and is aiming high. He is determined to make strong results: ‘The need is bigger than ever as these are the last races before the Showdown and points make prizes!’.

S

hane Byrne is in the mood for records in his bid to retain the MCE Insurance British Superbike crown – the Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki rider clocked up a half century of victories at the recent Oulton Park round of the country’s premier race series and is now determined to take the title for an unprecedented fourth time. Along with Niall Mackenzie and Ryuichi Kiyonari, Byrne shares the record of three BSB crowns but he is looking good to go one better,

20

although of course the Japanese rider could deny him and help himself to the record himself. But that is a big ask... Kiyonari is already smarting that Byrne has overtaken his remarkable tally of 43 BSB victories but could put together a late charge to the top. The season has reached an interesting stage here, with the emphasis on securing a place in the top six in the overall championship standings – it is these six riders who then become the ‘title-fighters’ going forward into the seven race ‘Showdown’ sequence, starting in a couple of weeks time at Assen, which will finally decide this year’s Champion.

By the close of play this weekend, the six riders going through will have their current scores deleted and each will be credited with 500 points to which will be added their podium credit scores which have been accumulated in the 19 races of the main season. Those podium credits become a vital part in the equation. Byrne, Josh Brookes and Alex Lowes might have booked their place among the elite six at Oulton Park last month but they could not afford to sit back and relax, rather they had to ride hard to be up front and scoring those credits which are awarded on the basis of three for a win, two for a second and one for third. Understand? Well for instance look at the standings after Oulton Park where Byrne had a lead of 29 points over Brookes at the top of the standings, but that had been cut to just a dozen in terms of the credit scores which levels the playing field and adds to the drama as the season draws to a close. >22

Keeping an eye on the progress of both Ellison and Kiyonari will be the Buildbase BMW duo of Jon Kirkham and James Westmoreland, both of whom have a good chance of making the showdown – they are locked together in a closely fought campaign and it could well be between the two of them to decide who goes through. Among the others American PJ Jacobsen on the second Tyco Suzuki along with the four times BSB runnerup Chris Walker (Quattro Plant Kawasaki) will be keen to turn on the style along with Byrne’s teammate Keith Farmer and Tommy Bridewell who having moved on from the Bathams Honda team had a solid debut with the Halsall Kawasaki team at Oulton Park. And, as he returns to the circuit where he secured a milestone victory as the first winner in the relaunched BSB series in April 1995, Michael Rutter would enjoy nothing more than a repeat of that as he gets under way on his Bathams Honda.

He is riding at his best, working hard with the team to get the best out of his bike and has twice enjoyed winning rides amid a season of strong points finishes. Brookes pushed Byrne all of the way last year before having to settle for second best and avenging that is driving him on but, apart from the defending Champion he has to worry about the determined and fast maturing Alex Lowes aboard the Samsung Honda who, just as he did last year, is through to the Showdown having packed the points with podium finishes with his seasonal first victory coming at Snetterton. James Ellison, back on the home beat after a term in MotoGP, is hitting form at just the right time amid what has been a frustrating season for the Cumbrian rider who is back riding for Shaun Muir’s team. He had taken a victory in the first round at Brands Hatch but then had to wait until July for a second and in between times had various issues to battle through but still secured a couple of seconds and a third. He should make the Showdown as should Kiyonari who is experiencing an indifferent campaign having returned to the series on the strength of winning the Asian Road Race title. Like Ellison the Samsung Honda rider is clicking into gear at the crucial time to make the top six, and no doubt he well remembers his 2010 title triumph when again he was late making the cut but then came on strong winning the crown with a hat-trick at Oulton Park.

he racing across the season has been fantastic and compelling, with a photo-finish and victory margins of a split second, in a fight that is set to go down to the wire. It might look at first glance to be a two-rider scrap but with the amount of points still to be scored, it is still very much wider than that. Alastair Seeley is enjoying his time with the Gearlink Kawasaki team who are bringing out the best in him and they shared his joy as he made it six of the best victories in the recent Oulton Park round, matching then beating the winning score of his rival Stuart Easton. They have made the running from the word go. Easton, who had joined the MarTrain Yamaha team in the closed season, returned from Superbike action for a determined bid to win the crown he first took more than a decade earlier. He made his intentions plain with a victory

first time out on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit but, next time out, an error and tumble saw Seeley, also moving back from Superbike action, taking full advantage to win. Next stop was Thruxton with Flying Scot Easton determined to set the record straight, and he did that in emphatic style, winning both races, while adrift of him Seeley and his team-mate Ben Wilson, so often so close to taking the title in previous years, shared the podium placings. On to Oulton Park in May and it was a win and a second apiece, while at Knockhill they were both overshadowed by Wilson who powered in a winning double. Those performances could so easily have been the launch pad for the Lincolnshire rider to gun for the top but at Snetterton it was not his Gearlink Kawasaki that set the pace, rather it was Seeley who packed the punch and the

points to take both race wins with Wilson nabbing a second and third. It was a weekend that also gave a possible turning point in the series. Gearlink had taken advantage of an official test at the Norfolk circuit, gaining track miles and more experience but Easton and his team gave that session a miss. Stuart scraped but a handful of points... The rider from Hawick was back to his best on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit, heading off Seeley, the Supersport title winner two years ago, to win the Sprint race, but, the rider known affectionately as the ‘Wee Wizard’ conjured something special in the second race of the weekend in Kent grabbing a sensational victory by a split second or a couple of inches. And so it moved on to a return trip to Oulton Park, with again a win each and most recently to the Bank Holiday weekend at Cadwell Park. >50

Wilson can be depended on to keep the two ahead honest as he rides in the only way he knows how, and that is aggressively and to be pushing for the wins, mixing it not just with them but also Aussie Billy McConnell aboard the Smiths Triumph. Like Wilson Skippy has three times come close to taking the title and again he is in the frame racking up points on a consistent basis but needing to take more top steps of the podium to make the final push towards the crown.

McConnell’s team-mate, reigning Champion Glen Richards, whose season has been hampered by injury, will be keen to show what might have been here on a circuit close to the Hinckley manufacturing base of the Triumph marque. Meanwhile his compatriot Jason O’Halloran has also endured more than his fair share of illluck across the campaign aboard his Samsung Honda. >52

He has the potential to take the fight to the leaders as does Graeme Gowland who has switched in mid term from Seton Yamaha to Appleyard Macadam to maintain his consistent record of top-six finishes. Others to watch include local riders Taylor Mackenzie from Ashby-de-laZouch riding for the Tyco Suzuki team and Nottingham’s Richard Cooper on one of the four Oxford TAG Triumphs

alongside Swadlincote rider Shaun Winfield, Sam Hornsey and former Superbike racer Scott Smart. And, keep an eye on Rob Guiver who graduated into the championship on the strength of his overall success in last year’s Triumph Triple Challenge, and riding the T3 Triumph. He is setting a good pace, along with Jake Dixon, in the Supersport Cup category that runs within the main championship.

‘Seeley is enjoying his time with Gearlink Kawasaki’
