7 W ELCO ME am so excited that we are all actually here! The cars have been polished, the carbs have been tweaked, the music is tuned, the food is made, the bloody mary's are mixed, the script is up to you, the great British public. And of course the weather. Please God. Thank you to you, for believing this crazy dream of the perfect festival, and for buying your tickets to join me. Between you all, at both CarFest South and North, we will raise over £750,000 for BBC Children in Need, who knows, perhaps even a cool mill. Plus we'll have a stonking good time in the process and that's just tremendous. Thank you too to everyone who has planned, measured, baked, driven, begged, borrowed, lent, played, sewn and generally worked incredibly hard to pull all this together. You are all superb and will almost certainly go to heaven. If you do, by the way, and you can get me in as a plus one that would be very much appreciated. Let the party begin! Chris x

How to Buy at an

Auction... So you've been

1. Research Let’s imagine that this is your initial visit to an auction. First of all, go and take a serious look at the car and maybe bring along somebody that knows their stuff to get their opinion as well. All the lots are sold ‘as seen’, there is no comeback after the sale. We try very hard to describe the cars as accurately as we can but this is always based on the information we get from the person selling it. It is your responsibility to make sure you are satisfied with it before you get involved. You can always have a chat with one of our guys; they are all here to help! 2. Register The next thing to do is to ‘Register’ as a bidder. We will need to see two forms of identification, one of which has to have some kind of ‘photo ID’ – a passport or driving licence – plus maybe a utility bill. With the paperwork bit

ught your eye.

something has ca

a crack at You fancy having

at the

xt?

buying it...what ne

done we will give you a ‘paddle’ – this is a sign with your number on it, so don’t lose it! Now you are ready to bid. 3. Get bidding! It is important that you make it clear to the auctioneer when you start, or stop, bidding as there could be several people bidding for the same lot. This is a good time to use your paddle. If you are not bidding avoid waving at friends and inadvertently making a bid! If you are the successful purchaser of a Lot, when the hammer goes down show the auctioneer your paddle number and make sure he has made a note of it. Don’t forget that when the hammer drops you have entered into a legally binding contract and you are obliged to buy the Lot. 4. Pay So, you won the auction and the car is yours...what next? Easy, just introduce yourself at

the Administration Desk and pay or arrange payment for your item. The only additional charge over and above the ‘hammer price’ is our standard buyer’s premium of 10% for cars and motorcycles (Automobilia items are 15%). There is also VAT to pay, but only on the percentage buyers’ premium, and not on the full hammer price. You can pay by bank transfer, cheque, credit or debit card, or we can accept cash up to £5,000. We’re sorry, but credit cards incur a 1.6% charge on the entire transaction. 5. Drive away in your new car If you playboy cheque or bank transfer you won’t be able to drive away in your new ‘Pride and Joy’ until the funds have been cleared. If you pay by credit / debit card then you can take the car away but generally not immediately after the auction.

We may be able to extricate your car but normally it can be collected the following day. Don’t forget to make sure that you have all the relevant documents, log book, keys etc. So, there you go…it really is easy and great fun! Have a great day and enjoy the auction action.

Performance Welcome to Abarth: A World of Performance arl ‘Carlo’ Abarth was born for speed – five times winner of the European motorcycle championships, he then took his passion and technical excellence into four wheels. In 1949, he founded Abarth & Co. and built an enviable reputation, specialising in competition cars and high-performance exhaust systems. During the ‘50s and ‘60s, Abarth built a series of specials, record cars and one-offs, with many of them bodied by the great Italian styling houses. The company logo, the scorpion, reflects Abarth’s astrological birth sign and the race-winning sting in the tail that Abarthtuned cars became famous for. Abarth’s philosophy was more than a search for speed, it was a search for intelligent solutions fuelled by a ‘never say die’ willingness to take on all comers. It said as much about Abarth’s attitude to life as it did about his engineering ambitions. That spirit still remains in Abarth’s new premises in Turin, where a team of specialists drive the motor sport, design and

k

manufacturing divisions, together with the Abarth Racing Team. Carlo Abarth’s beliefs that performance comes from efficiency, from going faster and further on less fuel, have never been more relevant than they are today and they underpin the genesis of the new Abarth performance road cars. The new Abarth range, including the 500, 595 and Punto EVO models, still signifies the enthusiast’s car of choice. With a range of efficient 1.4 turbocharged engines, today’s Abarth cars deliver outstanding performance. Outputs range from 135bhp in the Abarth 500 up to 180bhp in the new Abarth Punto Supersport, yet all have strong green credentials by exceeding the latest stringent Euro 5 emission standards. 50 years on from its conception, the Abarth 595 badge is re-born in both Turismo and Competizione specification, giving you the opportunity to enjoy the style and sports prowess of an Abarth designed to maximise driving pleasure. Look out for Ferrari 246 Dino This very special Ferrari 246 Dino is the first right hand drive Dino and was the original 1970 London motor show car. It has just undergone a full restoration, maintaining all of its original body and components and has been certified by Ferrari Classiche. This very pretty Dino recently won first in its class at The Ferrari Owners club of Great Britain National Concours. The car is proudly on display this weekend courtesy of its owner Mr James Needham. The Nova The Nova is a two-seater sports car based on the humble VW Beetle chassis. It was built from a kit and was produced by the design/development team of Richard Oakes and Phil Sayer in England in 1971. It went on sale in the UK as the Nova in early 1972; 2012 is the 40th Anniversary of this car design.

The car generated an enthusiastic following that still exists today. Some owners have made significant modifications such as using different chassis and engine combinations. Variants of the design were sold all over the world, under such names as ‘Stirling’ in USA and ‘Purvis Eureka’ in Australia, and many road-going examples exist today. The car has made cameo appearances in films such as Cannonball Run and Condorman and still turns heads wherever it goes with its fine lines and unique lifting canopy. The Nova

The Black Cats

The Blades Since forming in 2006, The Blades have flown at over 600 displays throughout the UK, Europe and the Middle-East. The Blades fly Extra EA-300s – lowwing, high performance aircraft designed for the most adventurous aerobatic manoeuvres and created with advanced aerobatic flying in mind. Their aim is to showcase the amazing capabilities of the Extra 300 combined with the skill, experience and heritage of the pilots.

The Black Cats are the Royal Navy’s Helicopter Display Team flying frontline Lynx maritime attack helicopters. They started in 2001 as the ‘Lynx Pair’ and have been the first official Royal Navy flying display team since the ‘Sharks’ disbanded in the mid-1990s. The aircrew and engineers are all volunteers from 702 Naval Air Squadron and the Lynx Helicopter Force. Their name is derived from the fierce cat depicted on the 702 Naval Air Squadron emblem and the term ‘blackcatting’ – naval slang for oneupmanship. Winning several awards over the years, the Black Cats are requested to display all over the UK and at many European air shows. Red Barrows, JCB Dancing Diggers These JCB Dancing Diggers have been described as a down to earth version of the Red Arrows having curtsied for the Queen and pirouetted for TV! You will be stunned to see these mechanical monsters, weighing over 80 tonnes, appear so elegant and light. The ‘choreography’ sees the diggers circle and weave past each other with split

second precision and with only inches to spare. But the moves that really draw gasps see the drivers form up and use their hydraulics to turn their machines into sculptures. Buckets and shovels become acrobatic arms, lifting the machines clear of the ground and performing hand-stands. RAF Balloons The two Hot Air Balloons gracing the skies at CarFest have been provided by the RAF Hot Air Balloon Club, based at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire. The large four person balloon is G-IOFR, a 24 gore of 105,000 cubic feet built in 2005. The smaller balloon, which straps to the back and can carry only one person is 31,000 cubic feet and was built in 2008.
