CIRCUIT OF THE
Americas THE COUNTRY'S NEW WORLD-CLASS DESTINATION FOR PREMIER MOTORSPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT ituated on over 1,300 acres of land here just southeast of downtown Austin, Texas, Circuit of the Americas is the country's newest destination for world-class motorsports and entertainment. The purpose-built Grand Prix facility enjoyed a highly anticipated grand opening in November 2012 when it hosted the return of Formula 1TM racing to the United States. This year, the Circuit adds an impressive array of sports-car racing to its robust schedule, including GRAND-AM Road RacingTM and its hugely popular Rolex Sports Car Series and Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge as part of the GRAND-AM of The Americas presented by GAINSCO and
TOTAL.This fall, competitors from the American Le Mans and FIA World Endurance Championships will also test their mettle over the country's only Grade 1 racetrack. The innovative facility was designed by a noteworthy team of architects and engineers, including Austin-based Miro Rivera Architects, HKS Architects, STG Design and Tilke GmbH, the worldrenowned German architectural-design firm that has created some of motorsports' modern masterpieces. Tilke-inspired racing circuits can be found in Abu DhabiUnited Arab Emirates, Austria, Bahrain, China, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Malaysia, Romania, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, with
several circuits still under construction. Circuit of The Americas consists of 350 acres of developed space, featuring a 3.4mile, 20-turn racing circuit with challenging curves reminiscent of some of the great international racing circuits and stretches with significant elevation changes, including a 133-foot climb up to the track's signature Turn 1. The expansive venue features a main grandstand with seating for 9,000 spectators, including permanent suites and semi-private, loge-level seating. The massive, 270,000-square foot Paddock Building features 34 individual garages and two upper levels of premium hospitality space. The 40,000-square foot media and conference center is home to everything
from working journalists to business seminars, auto shows and other large-scale events. The racetrack itself also features state-of-the-art safety features such as Geobrugg fencing and TecPro safety barriers, designed to keep both competitors and spectators safe without impeding sight lines around the facility. One of the circuit's most remarkable features is the amphitheater situated at the base of the venue's main entrance, called the Grand Plaza. The Tower Amphitheater, so named for the 251-foot observation tower that stretches high above it, is an expansive entertainment space accommodating up to 14,000 guests, and offers the largest permanent stage in
Central Texas. In July 2012, Circuit of The Americas announced an agreement with Live Nation, the world's largest live music and entertainment company, to bring national touring acts to the Circuit, and 'The Tower' will officially open April 5, 2013, with a performance by country-music sensation Kenny Chesney. The Tower's year-round live performance schedule will further enhance Austin's legacy as the 'Live Music Capital of the World'. For additional information about upcoming events at Circuit of The Americas and to purchase tickets and official merchandise, visit www.CircuitofTheAmericas.com and www.TowerAmphitheater.com. z

“This corner falls away at exit, right when you lex Gurney, a two-time Rolex Sports Car Series champion and son of racing legend Dan Gurney, was present for the opening ceremonies at the Circuit of the Americas last fall and took the opportunity to take several hot laps of the 3.4-mile race track. He was impressed, and can hardly wait to drive the No. 99 ‘Red Dragon’ GAINSCO Auto Insurance/Bob Stallings Racing Corvette Daytona Prototype with regular co-driver Jon Fogarty in this weekend’s feature event. ‘We expect to reach approximately 150mph on the approach to the incredibly steep face of the hill before Turn 1. This brake zone really dares you to go deep, as
the car is much more willing to slow down with the assist of the hill. You need to be trailing off the brake when you turn in as the crest of the hill is not as forgiving. The first apex sees a very slow 45 mph and is a little hard to see as the apex curb seems to appear out of nowhere. Trying to put the power down out of Turn 1 is extremely tricky as the road falls away sharply downhill and feels a touch off-camber at exit. Approaching the first right-hander of the Esses, you have to commit to holding the throttle down as the speeds climb quickly. The next left, Turn 3, is very difficult to get the turn-in point correct as it is mostly blind around the corner and it
is very quick, turning in at around 125mph. Getting the line right through the next series of corners is incredibly tough and if you overdo just one of these a little, then it will ruin all of them, so it requires just the right balance! These esses get progressively slower as you negotiate them, from 125mph down to about 60 for the final one. Right, left, right, left, right, left, right, left, the corners seem to go on forever and are sure to be tire eaters come race time. ‘The final left, Turn 10, is a tricky little ‘over a rise’ section where you again start to head fairly sharply downhill at the exit. It is a little bit of a relief to arrive there as the

are trying to mash the throttle!” esses are finally over, but now the speeds pick up again. The track gets very wide briefly and there’s a good overtaking area as you approach the brake zone for Turn 11. ‘Turn 11 is a very slow, slippery corner with a big wide entry where it is crucial to get a good exit for the longest straight on the track. Use too much curb at that exit and it seems like it saps your launch onto the straight. The long back straight actually has a long, gentle curve to it and in high-downforce trim we will reach about 160 mph before we brake for Turn 12. This is another slow hairpin, around 45mph, and again a difficult spot to get a nice clean exit. Turn 13 is a deceiving
little right-hander and is very easy to carry too much speed into as it continues to bend more than 90 degrees. ‘Turn 14 is a slight right and Turn 15 is another corner that invites mistakes as you are braking and turning and shifting into another decreasing-radius corner. Now, pick up the throttle and hold on for the triple right-hander at Turns 16–17–18. This is supposed to mimic the triple left of the epic F1 circuit in Istanbul Turkey and should be a fun spot to watch. This should be a third-gear 100mph+ section and is lots of fun to drive! There are multiple lines through here but the important thing is to carry as much speed
as possible. We get up to about 135mph before we have to get back over to the right side of the track to set up for Turn 19. You will see a lot of cars going off at the exit of 19 because of the high speeds at entry. ‘Now we’re approaching the final corner, Turn 20 – and another tricky one to cap off a lap. This corner falls away at exit, right when you are trying to mash the throttle! I like that this is not a straightforward finishing corner as the mistakes will open up the chances for overtaking. Overall, a very exhausting lap but great fun around the Circuit of the Americas!’ z

a 24-hour race – and endurance racing in general – were consistency and conservation, making sure not to overextend the car or the drivers. Boy, how times have changed. Reliability of the cars – and the conditioning of the drivers – has evolved significantly in recent years, such that the 2013 edition resembled a flat-out sprint from start to finish. Any minor miscue proved costly. Outright speed hasn’t always been the determining factor in endurance racing, but it certainly was at Daytona – and will be again during this weekend’s twohour and 45-minute contest.

his season will be the 14th to be held under the auspices of the Grand American Road Racing Association, which was formed in time for the 2000 season, and the 12th with title sponsorship from Rolex. The weekend’s feature race will comprise three classes: Daytona Prototypes, GT and GX. The DP concept for the premier class, featuring purpose-built tube-frame cars built around production-based engines, has been in place since 2003. The ultra-successful Grand Touring class structure, centered upon modified road-going sports cars, had been the solitary other division since 2005 but has been augmented this year by the new GX category which is aimed at introducing some newer technologies to the existing framework. The 12-race 2013 campaign kicked off with the traditional twice-around-the-clock Rolex 24 At Daytona in January, and it was a classic. Traditionally, the keys to success in

f NO.90 SPIRIT OF DAYTONA RACING NO.3 8 STAR MOTORSPORTS Pruett, from Auburn, Calif., and Mexico City native Rojas have enjoyed an astonishing run of success in Rolex Series competition. The pair have combined to win four championships in the past five years, including the last three in succession, while Pruett – ‘Mr. Grand-Am’ – also took honors for the team in 2004, partnered by Max Papis. The white-and-blue TELMEX machine will surely arrive here in Texas as the firm favorite to win Saturday’s race, but there is no shortage of serious challengers. From one extreme of experience to another, don’t be surprised to see the similar BMW/Dinan-powered Riley of Team Sahlen to be running near the sharp end of the field. Supported by Joe Sahlen’s meat-packing business and run by the father-and-two-sons team of Joe,Will and Wayne Nonnamaker, Team Sahlen has been a stalwart of the GT class in recent years with Mazda, finally earning its first victory last year – appropriately enough at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. This year the family team has stepped up into the DP ranks and immediately proved itself up to the task as impressive youngster Dane Cameron qualified a strong third at Daytona and was dicing for the lead in the opening exchanges. ‘The transition to DP has been pretty straightforward,’ said Cameron, who won

The toughest part about moving to DP full-time has also been the most exciting part – developing our RileyBMW into a front-running program. f

“ The youngster is mature well beyond his 21 years and has been a front-runner in the GT ranks for the past three seasons, finishing just two points shy of taking top championship honors in 2011 and attracting the attention of the factory Corvette Racing team which allowed him to make his Le Mans 24 Hours debut in 2012. Fourth and eighth positions at Daytona were filled by the pair of Corvette DPs entered by Action Express Racing which has entered the 2013 season with a fresh – albeit very experienced – driver lineup and extremely high expectations. The team is no stranger to success, having evolved from one of the most storied names in Rolex Series racing, Brumos Racing, but has established a new identity under the guidance of former NASCAR driver Elton Sawyer. After winning two races for Action Express in 2012, Portugal’s Joao Barbosa will share the No. 9 car with Burt Frisselle, while Formula 1, Champ Car and sports-car veteran Christian Fittipaldi – nephew of three-times F1 World Champion Emerson Fittipaldi –
will be supported in the No.9 entry by Burt’s younger brother, Brian. Both Frisselle brothers are proven front-runners at this level and also come from a well known racing family with father Brad having won multiple races and titles in the 1970s. f

I love testing and development so I have really enjoyed playing a part in progressing from our first car’s shakedown test, when we had no idea where to begin with setup, to qualifying in the top three for the Rolex 24.’ One other interesting aspect of Team Sahlen is the fact that its engineering staff is led by a woman. Katie Crawford, though, is no newcomer to the sport. Her father, Max Crawford, is a renowned engineer and fabricator, and Katie has been heavily involved in motor racing her entire life. A phalanx of distinctive Corvette DP cars will provide plenty of opposition to the Riley-BMWs. During the race at Daytona, all six posted a best lap within a half-second of each other. The highest finishing ‘Bow Tie’ car in Florida, taking second place, was the No. 10 Velocity Worldwide/Toshiba/Chevrolet version fielded by Wayne Taylor Racing. Veteran Max ‘the Ax ‘ Angelelli, an Italian based in Monte Carlo, will share the car with rising star Jordan Taylor, who, yes, is the son of team owner Wayne Taylor (who himself was an extremely accomplished driver, with multiple sports-car championships to his credit) but has earned this opportunity purely on merit.

Maintaining the racing family theme, Jordan Taylor’s older brother, Ricky, will be another contender for victory in the No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Racing Corvette DP he will share with equally rapid Englishman Richard Westbrook. Ricky, 23, marked himself as an expert qualifier while driving for his father’s team for the past three seasons, claiming 10 pole positions, and has every intention of adding to his tally of seven race wins after being enticed across to Troy Flis’ ambitious Spirit of Daytona team.
Westbrook won three times in 2012 but also finished outside the top five on six occasions, which, in a series where the point system rewards consistency, restricted him to a disappointing 10th in the final standings. The team has aspirations of a far stronger campaign in 2013. The Corvette contingent is completed by 8 Star Motorsports and GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing. The first of these is a brand-new organization established over the winter by Enzo Potolicchio. The 44-
year-old Venezuelan enjoyed a breakout 2012 season which included victories at the Twelve Hours of Sebring and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and now is spreading his wings to include an assault on the Rolex Sports Car Series with a brand-new car and a new team symbolized by the eight stars that adorn the Venezuelan flag. The team which boasted an all-star international lineup of drivers, including Frenchmen Stephane Sarrazin and Nicolas Minassian, Portugal’s Pedro Lamy and Englishman Anthony Davidson, hit problems early during the race at Daytona, restricting it to an unrepresentative 34th place overall finish, tenth among the DP class, but Potolicchio is intent upon bouncing back with a strong result this weekend. Last and by no means least, the No. 99 GAINSCO ‘Red Dragon’ is sure to be a crowd favorite, especially since it’s competing in its only home-state race of the season. f

GRAND-AM ROLEX SPORTS CAR SERIES The GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series offers extremely competitive sports car racing and in 2013 will feature three classes of cars racing simultaneously on track; exotic DPs (Daytona Prototypes), sleek GT (Grand Touring) machines and new for 2013, sporty GXs. Rolex Series races are measured in time, not distance, and require more than one driver at the helm. Typically a two-man team competes in the shorter, sprint events, which last anywhere from two to three hours. For the longer and more difficult races, such as our marquee events, the Rolex 24 At Daytona and the Six Hours of Watkins Glen, a three-to-five man team will contend. In addition to taking on tires, refueling and making chassis adjustments, driver changes are also required during the race.

The North American Endurance Championship presented by VISITFLORIDA.com began in 2012 with Starworks Motorsport taking the win in Daytona Prototype and Magnus Racing winning the GT class. The NAEC rewards competitors in the three longest races of the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series season. It opens with the Rolex 24 At Daytona in January, continues with the Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen June 30, and ends at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on July 26.
GX CLASS (GX) The GX class features a range of production-based sports cars such as the Mazda6 and Porsche Cayman. While they look similar to the versions you see on the road, they feature carbon fiber body parts, race suspension, oversized brakes and state-of-the-art safety equipment. GX is the first class to feature high-output 4-cylinder turbo diesel engines as well as 6-cylinder gas engines. These engines produce between 375 – 400 horsepower.
Drivers Alex Gurney, the son of racing legend Dan Gurney (who remains the only American to win a Formula 1 race in a car he also designed and built – at the 1967 Belgian Grand Prix), and Jon Fogarty already have two DP championship titles under their belts, in 2007 and 2009, and have their sights set on a third. The pairing earned four second-place finishes in 2012 but, for the first time since 2006, failed to score a victory. Their 2013 campaign also began in disappointing fashion at Daytona, restricted to seventh place by some electrical gremlins during the early stages. Nevertheless, the car was fast and will doubtless be challenging for honors here. Interestingly, while all the Corvette DP cars appear identical, other than their liveries, they are supplied by three different manufacturers. The pair of Action Express cars, the Spirit of Daytona entry and the 8 Star machine all feature Coyote chassis built by Chevrolet stalwarts Pratt & Miller, while Wayne Taylor Racing’s Velocity Worldwide No. 10 car is built by Dallara in Italy and the GAINSCO car utilizes a Riley chassis. Two other likely challengers for the DP win – Michael Shank Racing and Starworks with Alex Popow – are also equipped with the latest Riley DPG3 chassis, albeit powered by Ford V8 engines. MSR’s No. 60 Riley-Ford will be shared by Florida-based Brazilian Ozz Negri (who drove only one stint at Daytona while recovering from the effects of a leg injury sustained over the winter) and John Pew, an accomplished ocean sailor and two-time winner of the Jim Trueman Award as the series’ top Pro-Am driver. Peter Baron’s Starworks team came closest to toppling Pruett and Rojas from their perch atop the championship standings last year, placing a close second with six podium finishes.

Scotsman Ryan Dalziel and Venezuelan teammate Alex Popow began their 2013 campaign with a sixth at Daytona after experiencing a few delays but, in common with the remainder of the field, are excited about racing at COTA. ‘It’s not often that GRAND-AM gets to race on a Formula 1 circuit, ‘ says Dalziel. ‘The place looks amazing and I’m really looking forward to it. We found a few problems with the car after the race at Daytona so I’m sure we’ll be a lot stronger in Texas.’ Popow, incidentally, is one of only a few drivers with prior experience of the track, having competed in the Ferrari Challenge races during the F1 weekend last fall.
GT CLASS The GT category is likely to be every bit as closely fought as the DP class, and while the entry list was far from complete as we closed for press, it still contained a representative selection of potential winners. Jeff Segal and accomplished amateur co-driver Emil Assentato last year combined to win their second Rolex GT Championship in three years, driving a brand-new Ferrari 458 for AIM Autosport Team FXDD. The partnership has been split this season, with veteran Anthony Lazzaro joining Assentato in the FXDD entry and Segal driving a sister R.Ferri/AIM Motorsport Racing Ferrari with vastly experienced Indy Car and
NASCAR veteran Max Papis; both cars were contenders at Daytona. Assentato began his title defense with a third-place finish, while the Segal/Papis car, shared with Ferrari factory drivers Giancarlo Fisichella and Toni Vilander, placed a disappointing 21st after experiencing some lengthy delays. Californians Johannes van Overbeek and Mike Hedlund will drive a third Ferrari 458, supported by Tequila Patron and entered by proven American Le Mans Series winning team Extreme Speed Motorsports. Two more European brands, Porsche and Audi, will be among the many and varied contenders seeking to knock
Ferrari off the top of the Manufacturers Championship pile. Audi made its Rolex Series debut last year with its potent R8 GRAND-AM, earning a best finish of second in the season finale, but sprung to prominence in January at Daytona by sweeping the top two places. Admittedly, the result owed much to strategy – with rapid European Filipe Albuquerque coming from behind inside the final hour to snatch victory for Alex Job Racing and teammates Oliver Jarvis, Eduardo Mortara and Dion von Moltke – but there was no denying the Audis’ capability. f

Alex Job was still awaiting confirmation at press time as to whether he would continue to represent Audi Sport Customer Racing in Texas – if so, von Moltke will be the focal point for the team after also winning at Sebring last year, at the wheel of an AJR Porsche – while APR Motorsport and Rum Bum Racing, similarly stepping up from the Continental Tire Sports Car Series, also are likely to field the attractive R8s. A magnificent customer-support program has ensured that the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car has been a staple of the GT category since its inception. Regular and effective updates belie the incredible fact that the 911 was first conceived 50 years ago, and several of the Stuttgart-built cars will be capable of challenging for the victory. Among the standard bearers will be Magnus Racing No.44 car handled by John Potter and three-time Rolex champion Andy Lally,
the familiar No. 59 Brumos Racing entry for 2011 champions Leh Keen and Andrew Davis and the emerging Park Place Motorsports team which will include Porsche’s lone American factory driver, Patrick Long, among its roster. Another particularly potent car in GT will be Stevenson Motorsports’ rumbling No. 57 Chevrolet Camaro GT.R driven by Robin Liddell, who has 18 wins under his belt and, to his intense annoyance, has finished runner-up three times in the GT standings (including 2012). The experienced Scotsman will share with rising talent John Edwards, who counts open-wheel championships in Pro Mazda and Atlantic to his credit and has taken to GT cars like a duck to water. The GX class is still in its infancy but
holds plenty of intrigue. Five cars contested the opening race at Daytona, with the Napleton Racing Porsche Cayman S emerging as a clear winner in the hands of veterans David Donohue and Shane Lewis, ably supported by Dr. Jim Norman and Venezuelan Nelson Canache Jr. Of particular technical interest are the pair of SpeedSource Mazda6 GX cars powered by the exciting new turbocharged Mazda SKYACTIV-D Clean Diesel engine. The cars hit some developmental problems during their debut but boast a strong driver lineup comprising veteran Sylvain Tremblay, former Mazda MX-5 National champion Tom Long and two promising young Americans (and former winners of prestigious Team USA Scholarships) Joel Miller and Tristan Nunez. z

Challenge THE CONTINENTAL TIRES SPORTS CAR CHALLENGE CONSISTENTLY PROVIDES SOME OF THE MOST EXCITING ACTION TO BE FOUND ANYWHERE ON THE PLANET aturday morning's second round of the 2013 title chase is sure to be no different. A field of well over 50 cars, representing at least a dozen different manufacturers, will do battle for two and a half hours, and the list of potential winners is extensive. The 'showroom stock' concept is well proven. It is strictly controlled and allows teams to make only very specific changes to the cars that you or I could buy from any car dealership around the country. Costs, therefore, are kept within reasonable bounds – at least by auto racing standards – and the sanctioning body, GRAND-AM, works hard to ensure that no one oversteps
S
the technical boundaries. The series comprises two classes. Grand Sport (GS) features large-displacement six or eight-cylinder sports cars, including the Ford Mustang Boss 302 R, Chevrolet Camaro GS.R, Porsches, BMWs and the exotic Aston Martin Vantage, as well as some smaller-capacity motors featuring forced induction, such as the Subaru WRX STI. The Street Tuner (ST) class caters to smaller four or six-cylinder cars – which can be sedans, coupes or roadsters – and boasts a wide range of competing marques including BMW, Honda, Mazda, Nissan, Porsche and Volkswagen. The eclectic mix draws drivers with an equally wide variety of experience and ensures there
is never a dull moment. The season-opening race at Daytona International Speedway in January set the tone for another intriguing campaign with six different GS cars taking a turn out in front of the field and no fewer than nine different ST competitors enjoying a taste of the lead. In the end, overall and GS spoils fell to Jack Roush Jr and Billy Johnson; it was the second time in succession that the California/Michigan pairing had swept to victory at Daytona in their distinctive red #61 Roush Performance Mustang Boss 302 R. They make an interesting combination. Yes, Roush is the son of legendary drag racing, NASCAR and Trans-Am entrant (and two-time air-crash
survivor) Jack Roush, aka ‘The Cat in the Hat’. Junior is 39 now and has amassed plenty of accomplishments of his own. He began karting at the age of 6 and established his own internet software company before joining Roush Performance to focus on the internet side of his father's business which specializes in high-performance aftermarket car parts and accessories; Roush Jr has been racing in the Continental Challenge since 2006. Daytona marked his ninth GS victory – all with Johnson – and the perfect way to return to action after being forced to miss the final two races last year due to a broken wrist sustained in a crash at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

GRAND SPORT CLASS (GS) GS cars have engines that generate between 350 – 405 horsepower, which equates to speeds in excess of 160 mph. This class includes Aston Martin Vantages, BMW M3s, Chevrolet Camaros, and Ford Mustangs, among other high performance race cars.

by jeremy shaw Teammate Johnson, 26, looked set for a career in the open-wheel ranks after winning multiple karting titles and displaying immense promise in Formula BMW in the mid-2000s. Once the California native realized the difficulties he faced in obtaining the budget to keep his career on an upward curve, however, he began to explore other options. He soon found his niche in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge. Johnson finished second in the 2007 ST standings, winning a serieshigh four races, and has amassed nine more victories since moving up to GS the following year. No one has scored more CTSCC wins or podiums than Johnson over the past five seasons.
ST cars can reach speeds in excess of 130 mph but there are no V8s allowed, only four and six-cylinder engines are permitted. Mazda Speed 3s, BMW 328is, Volkswagen GTIs and Honda Civic Si's are examples of ST machines. These race cars create a thrilling event for spectators.
Personable, versatile and fast, Johnson has made his mark in other series, too, including starts in both GT and DP cars in the Rolex Sports Car Series and the NASCAR Nationwide series, but for 2013 his sights are set firmly on some unfinished business – namely to win the CTSCC title with Roush. Many other contenders have identical aspirations, including the other two podium finishers at Daytona, Matt Plumb/Nick Longhi and defending series champions David Empringham/John Farano. Plumb and Longhi bounced back from being punted into an early spin and a penalty for a pit-lane speed violation to finish a strong second in Luis

and Jennifer Bacardi's distinctive Rum Bum Racing Porsche Carrera. The pair initially thought they had clinched the 2012 championship after winning the final race at Lime Rock Park, only to discover they were ineligible for points because Longhi didn't complete the minimum driving time (30 minutes) and Plumb, who took over at the wheel inside the opening half-hour of the race, was not properly nominated for points. Plumb was initially entered in both of the team's cars, but given such a scenario, GRAND-AM regulations require that the driver must start the race in the car with which he intends to score points.

The oversight was as least partly assuaged by the fact that Rum Bum Racing, managed by accomplished racing veteran Joe Varde, did clinch the Team Championship – due reward after winning five of the 10 races. This year they plan to add the Driver Championship to their laurels. Canadians Empringham and Farano were the beneficiaries of the Rum Bum team's miscue, claiming the 2012 GS title after a remarkably consistent campaign in their BGB Motorsports Porsche. In fact, they failed to win a race but were always among the leading contenders, failing only twice to finish among the top six. f

pro Mazda championship he primary focus this weekend will of course be on sports cars as GRAND-AM’s headlining Rolex Sports Car Series Daytona Prototypes and GTs make their eagerly anticipated debut at Circuit of the Americas alongside the street car-based contenders from the Continental Tires Sports Car Challenge. But don’t forget, though, that many of the top contenders first cut their racing teeth, so to speak, in the open-wheel ranks. The Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires sports a slightly different name this year, with Andersen Promotions now at the helm after the Rodrigues family’s withdrawal from the Star Mazda series they created in 1991, but its credibility remains intact. And don’t be surprised if several of the leading contenders from this weekend’s pair of races – which open up the 2013 season – find their way into sports cars in the years to come. After all, that’s exactly what happened to former champions Dane Cameron and John Edwards, both of whom are likely to play leading roles in the Grand-Am of the Americas Presented by GAINSCO and Total. Cameron won the Pro Mazda crown in 2007, and this year has made the progression, along with Team Sahlen, from Rolex GT to DP, while Edwards, who succeeded Cameron as the title winner in 2008, is sure to be one of the leading GT
protagonists in the Stevenson Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro GT.R. ‘I’m very proud of being able to call myself a Pro Mazda Champion,’ says Cameron. ‘The series is always full of very talented and extremely hungry young drivers, and at times it feels like half the field has a chance to win races. I learned two very valuable lessons. The first one was that consistency wins championships. Also, I realized how much time can be gained or lost on the first few laps after a start, or a restart. It was important to build a gap and then try to manage it. Now, in sports cars with tons of pit stops and restarts, you can gain a lot by being quicker than the other guys on cold tires. I really enjoyed my time in Pro Mazda – being successful there really helped to put me on the map as I moved forward in my career.’ Pro Mazda will comprise a total of 16 races this year, beginning here at COTA with a pair of 45-minute sprints – one apiece on Friday and Saturday. The action is sure to be fast and furious. At least four drivers – Matthew Brabham, Spencer Pigot, Scott Anderson and Shelby Blackstock – are graduating this year from USF2000. And all are very highly rated. Brabham, who celebrated his 19th birthday on Monday, hails from a racing dynasty. His grandfather, Sir Jack, won a trio of Formula 1 World Championships in 1959,
‘60 and ‘66. His father, Geoff, and uncle David both earned victories at the famed 24 Hours of Le Mans. The youngest Brabham won last year’s USF2000 crown, which guaranteed him a ride in Pro Mazda via the MAZDASPEED Driver Development Scholarship. Coupled with Andretti Autosport (which also won the IZOD IndyCar Series title last year with Ryan Hunter-Reay), he must surely be regarded as a likely title contender. ‘I’m so excited for this upcoming season, as I am moving up a step in the Mazda Road to Indy,’ says Brabham. ‘The Pro Mazda car has more power than I’m used to and it’s such a fun car to drive, so I’m really looking forward to my first race here at Circuit of the Americas.’ Pigot, meanwhile, has been snapped up by Team Pelfrey, which guided Englishman Jack Hawksworth to the 2012 Pro Mazda title. The Florida-based squad has undergone some changes since then but the talented Pigot, 19, who won eight of the 14 USF2000 events last year and only narrowly missed out on claiming the title, continued to display his ability when he convincingly topped a Pro Mazda test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course last fall. ‘Starting a new racing season is always exciting, especially this year as I’m moving up to the Pro Mazda Championship with Team Pelfrey,’ says Pigot. ‘It’s going to be a
WHAT IS PRO MAZDA ? clearly defined path to reach the top echelons of the sport in North America had become fractured over time but has been revitalized in recent years by the Mazda Road to Indy which, allied to the MAZDASPEED Driver Development Ladder, now comprises all the ingredients necessary to ensure a logical and well balanced three-step progression through the ranks. Sanctioned by INDYCAR, Pro Mazda represents the middle step on the Mazda Road to Indy, in between USF2000 and Indy Lights. Frenchman Tristan Vautier, who won the title in 2011, will graduate to the IZOD IndyCar Series after winning last year’s Firestone Indy Lights Championship, while 2012 champion Jack Hawksworth, from England, is looking to follow in his footsteps by stepping up into Indy Lights for 2013. tough season; there are a lot of new challenges for myself and the team. It’s been a while since my last race so I’m really looking forward to the first round here in Austin. Being able to kick the year off at COTA will be an awesome experience. I’ve watched a lot of footage from the track and it looks like a blast to drive!’ Anderson, 24, also boasts strong credentials after winning the 2011 Skip Barber National title and adding a pair of USF2000 wins last year in his rookie campaign, while 23-year-old Blackstock – the son of country singing star Reba McIntyre – showed solid pace both in USF2000 and the Continental Tire Challenge last year. Minnesota-based JDC MotorSports will field cars for returning series veterans Zach Meyer, from Canada, and Colombian Juan Piedrahita, who finished seventh in last year’s title-chase. Countryman Juan Camilo Acosta, who scored one win during a partial season in the Panam GP Series in 2012, will step up to Pro Mazda with the new Cresson, Texasbased M1 Racing team, while other talented newcomers will include Californian teenager Kyle Kaiser and California-based Welshman Lloyd Read. z
Japan, and mated them with the ultra reliable Mazda rotary engines. The school ran a well supported professional series which provided a launching pad for the careers of many well known drivers. Gary Rodrigues took over the sanctioning rights in 1991, beginning with a series of regional championships around the United States before Star Mazda evolved into a true national title-chase in 1999. The current cars, introduced in 2004, feature state-of-the-art composite chassis, Mazda Renesis rotary engines and – new for 2013 – Cooper Zeon racing tires. Top names to have graduated through the series include NASCAR veteran Michael MacDowell, BMW Motorsport factory driver Joey Hand, current IZOD IndyCar Series standouts Graham Rahal, Marco Andretti and James Hinchcliffe, and rising star Conor Daly.

n January at the traditional season-opening Rolex 24 At Daytona, the California native qualified his familiar No. 01 TELMEX/ Target Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates Dinan/BMW-powered Riley squarely on pole position. He set out as he intended to continue, leading from the front and going on to notch the victory along with regular GRAND-AM co-driver Memo Rojas, rising IndyCar star Charlie Kimball and F1, INDYCAR and NASCAR veteran Juan Pablo Montoya. The win was Pruett's fifth in the Rolex 24 At Daytona, tying him with this year's Grand Marshall Hurley Haywood as the most successful of all time at the twice-around-the-clock classic. Pruett has also earned five more class victories over the years at Daytona, dating back to 1987 when he took the GTO honors in a Roush Racing Ford Mustang.
Like so many of today's top racers, Pruett started out in karts, at age 8. He ultimately won 10 major titles – and in 1991 was inducted into the World Karting Association Hall of Fame – before moving into cars in 1984. He made his mark virtually right away in sedans, joining Jack Roush's team and scoring his first IMSA GTO win aboard a Ford Mustang at Pocono in 1985. He won the title one year later, added his first Trans-Am Championship in 1987, driving a Roush Racing Ford Merkur XR4Ti, and never looked back. He was among very few sedan drivers to transition successfully into open-wheel cars. After making his Indy Car debut with Dick Simon Racing at the 1988 Long Beach Grand Prix, Pruett earned co-Rookie of the Year honors at the 1989 Indianapolis 500 for Truesports Racing, adding two podium finishes that year, and was seemingly set for a stellar career before suffering a
devastating crash during testing. He missed the entire 1990 season while recuperating from his injuries but showed he had lost none of his determination by adding five top-five finishes during a difficult 1991 campaign with a brand-new car. After a brief flirtation once again in sports cars which netted a second Trans-Am crown in 1994, Pruett joined Patrick Racing and embarked on an intensive development program with Firestone which culminated in the tire giant's return to toplevel open-wheel racing in 1995 after a lengthy hiatus. f

The hard work paid off with a sensational victory in that year's Michigan 500 following a protracted duel with Al Unser Jr. Pruett's developmental abilities also were tapped by Toyota when it embarked on a Champ Car program in 1990, and it was he who scored the manufacturer's first tangible success by qualifying on pole position for the final race of the '99 season at Fontana. It was also Pruett's final start at the pinnacle of US open-wheel racing, but far from the end of his career. Pruett moved into NASCAR the following year, then reverted to the sports-
car realm. He won the GTS class at the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2001 at the wheel of a Corvette, added a third Trans-Am title, driving a Jaguar XKR for Paul Gentilozzi's Rocketsports Racing team in 2003, and then forged his astonishingly successful partnership with Ganassi in GRAND-AM Road Racing which to date has brought no fewer than 39 wins and five Championships in the Daytona Prototype division. But wait, there's more! In addition to his successes behind the wheel, Pruett and wife Judy have collaborated in writing four highly acclaimed children's books, which
are marketed through their own publishing company, Word Weaver Books, and more recently have developed an awardwinning winery at their home in Auburn, Calif. Indeed, the Wine Spectator recently named Pruett Vineyards as one of the top winemakers to watch in the future. As you can tell, no grass grows beneath Scott Pruett's feet! z
