KTM SXF 350

KTM 690 DUKE R With the most powerful single cylinder in the world, KTM continues the success story of the Duke that was set in motion 20 years ago in Austria, with the development of a potent and sporty single cylinder four-stroke motor. In 2007 KTM extended its leading role with the introduction of a completely new LC4 generation, an entirely new engine that lifted the single cylinder to a new level in terms of performance and rideability. At the International Motorcycle and Scooter Show 2009, KTM UK presents the 690 Duke R, the most powerful single cylinder of all time. Weighing a mere 148kg, the motorcycle delivers an impressive 70hp. A sleek and agile chassis, fitted throughout with high quality components and sporty style, completes the latest LC4 model.

0

KTM’s LC4 single is not only the most powerful but also the most modern single cylinder in the world, super reliable and extremely maintenance friendly. Thanks to the longer stroke (84.5 instead of 80 mm) and the displacement increase to 690cc, the 690 Duke R produces a juicy 70hp top performance and 70 Nm maximum torque, which is produced in a unique, spontaneous and wonderfully cultivated single cylinder manner. 350CC FACTORY MOTOCROSS PROJECT KTM lives and breathes motorsport and the motocross team boss is no-less than motocross multi World Champion, Stefan Everts. His commitment creates fantastic possibilities for the factory because he is able to perfectly link development with motorsport and in doing so, helps write a new chapter in

the history of KTM’s success in off road motorsport. With all of his immense experience and enormous energy, Everts is driving a very special project, the results of which carry the stamp of the motocross legend right down to the smallest detail. This project is being proudly presented to the UK public for the first time at the International Motorcycle & Scooter Show in the form of the new 350cc MX concept. With this pilot project version of a completely new motocrosser, KTM again demonstrates the courage and determination to leave the beaten path. Its benchmark spec with 350cc, linkage suspension and fuel injection are based on an ambitious development that is carried out always looking towards the future. This is a radical new interpretation with a clear goal: maximum sporting success and enthusiastic customers!

KTM 125 PROJECT

However, a new concept does not mean KTM will place less importance on its traditional models - KTM is still governed by the will to win and the stopwatch. For the 2010 season, the well-known and newly presented 2010 models will be the choice of the majority of serious off road riders. And, as in 2009, they will surely continue to celebrate great success. Meanwhile the “Project-350” continues to run at high pressure and KTM’s obligation to its customers remains completely unchanged: what the factory riders’ use on the track will also available for sale. 125 PROJECT For decades now KTM has been engaged in racing series all over the

world and by its strong conviction and visible enthusiasm for motorsport, has created a unique sporting image. This KTM philosophy is reflected in the models it produces. The support and promotion of tomorrow’s top riders is also a big KTM tradition. Whether riding for fun or competing in World Championships, whether on or off road, at KTM, young motorcycle enthusiasts are guaranteed plenty of attention and just the right motorcycle. In the future, KTM will offer young riders this ultimate enjoyment and not just for racing on closed circuits. At this years International Motorcycle & Scooter Show, KTM presents the 125 Project. A new sporty, high quality Naked Bike in the typical KTM design, the brand enters

the 125 streetbike segment and in doing so sets new standards. As in the development of all KTM vehicles, there are clear rules for the KTM 125: high product quality and a purist sporty riding experience. Lightweight, fantastic handling and best rideability in class are the traditional development goals. Not to be forgotten is the powerful engine, 100% developed in Mattighofen, which with 125cc displacement ensures plenty of enjoyment. A four-valve cylinder head, two overhead camshafts, water cooling and fuel injection means that the basis 11 KW (15hp) strong 125cc engine carries all the most modern construction characteristics and above all stands for one thing: pure riding fun! •

Honda in 2010 2

010 is set to be another big year for Honda with the introduction of some incredible new models to their line up. The VFR1200F harks the dawn of a new era. It represents the perfect fusion of beauty and function. The integration of sophisticated design and intelligent engineering. It has been developed in keeping with previous VFRs; that have delivered a combination of sports and touring capabilities using the latest technologies. This motorcycle is however, brand new. A clean-sheet

interpretation of the ultimate road-sport machine - a concept driven by extensive understanding of customer needs and the adoption of state-of-the-art technologies. In pursuit of heightened levels of control and feedback, the VFR1200F adopts the latest race-track bred technologies but adapted and evolved to create a machine that can be many things to many riders. The harmonic growl of the flexible and responsive V4 motor may rekindle the emotions inspired by previous iconic VFRs, but its unique ‘heartbeat’ engine

feel and an unrivalled level of manageability sets the new VFR apart, not only from its predecessors but also from every bike currently available. Its unique cylinder layout and UNICAM configuration makes the engine broader at the front, narrower at the rear, to give the bike a slimmer waist and slightly narrower seat. Thanks to its throttle-by-wire’ system that enhances rider connectivity, throttle feedback is instant and decisive, for razor-sharp acceleration. A revolutionary new lowmaintenance shaft-drive

system is so effective that any experienced biker would swear it feels just like a chain-drive. The patented layered fairing design is a perfect match of form and function. Designers and engineers worked together to create a uniquely beautiful shape and, at the same time, optimal air flow and heat management. High attention to detail and quality is evident everywhere, and every design element has been fine-tuned in tandem with engineering requirements. New painting technologies were even developed to achieve a luxurious, highclass finish far above normal production standards. The VFR is quite simply, a beautiful machine. Also set to make a huge impact when it is launched next year is the awesome new VT1300CX Fury. Choppers have existed on the fringes of the

motorcycling scene for decades. They are built and owned by a diverse mix of riders who are united by a passion for the machine itself and the emotions aroused by owning and riding it. Like other genres of motorcycle, choppers have evolved over the years. Early, often crude homebuilt efforts have inspired ever greater innovation and true choppers are now something of an art form with highly desirable looks and attitude. The Fury is a true original in the genre a radical concept offered in a unique package that’s accessible to all. The VT1300CX is visually daring and great fun to ride, with a feel and sound that place the rider squarely in the chopper domain. It also delivers the same functionality, quality and reliability you would expect from a Honda, and at an affordable price. The ‘raked-out’ chopper

THE CAROLE NASH INTERNATIONAL MOTORCYCLE & SCOOTER SHOW 2009

styling of the Fury is visually striking and when you fire up the engine, waves of muscular V-twin power, sound and feel also flood the senses. A newly designed dual exhaust system and new camshafts add to the creation of an engine that produces hugely satisfying performance and awesome sound, and a clean, reliable, maintenance-free shaft drive means more time spent on the road and less in the garage. Honda’s custom line up is also bolstered in 2010 with the addition of another new V-twin powered machine, the Shadow 750 ‘Black Spirit’. An intense variation on the Shadow Spirit theme, the ‘Black Spirit’ has authentic bobber styling and a pure, minimalistic spirit. In one basic colour, its bold character comes to the fore, making its beefy performance and easy ownership all the more pleasurable.

In the Off-Road sector, Honda’s all new CRF250R is ready to confirm its domination of Supercross and Motocross tracks yet again. Its lightning quick prowess and radical looks are matched with a new fuel injection system, even more power, lighter weight and smooth, easy handling characteristics. 2010 will also see the introduction of several stunning new colour variants across Honda’s range, most notably the dynamic CBR600RR Special Edition which is sure to turn heads wherever it goes. To experience all of the new Honda models and ‘start something special’, be sure to visit your nearest Honda dealer on Valentines weekend 13-14 Feb 2010. Celebrate the launch of the new 2010 models with your Honda dealer and be in with the chance to win a romantic Eurostar weekend for two in Paris. •

2010 Victory range offers more Freedom VICTORY MOTORCYCLES HAVE GOT A FEW TRICKS UP THEIR SLEEVE FOR THE NEW DECADE, CAPITALISING ON THEIR POSITIVE EXPERIENCE IN THE UK TO LAUNCH INTO EUROPE FOR THE FIRST TIME WITH EU WHOLE VEHICLE TYPE APPROVAL.

V

ictory have used this opportunity to streamline and broaden the already extensive model range around a single power train; the 106/6 Freedom engine features 106 cubic inch capacity and a six-speed gearbox, that’s 1731cc of American muscle, with up to 89 addictively-accessible horsepower on tap, combined with a massive 113ftlbs of torque right where you need it; at useable revs and realworld road speeds. The model range is based around two basic platforms; the well-established

0

tubular frame seen in the Vegas, Kingpin, Hammer and Jackpot models, and the sectional cast aluminium chassis introduced with the extraordinary Vision grand tourer, which provides the basis for a new generation of touring models that will be launched at the end of summer 2010. Fronted by an incredibly tempting and expanding entry-level range under the 8-Ball banner. The 8-Ball range maintains Victory’s premium quality feel and is made all the more attractive by the increase in capacity and the 6-speed gearbox. The range

of bikes comprise two new models in addition to the simple, minimalist 8Ball Vegas and the full-fendered 8-Ball Kingpin. There’s the 8-Ball Hammer, a brutal black-on-black version of the popular street-fighting power cruisers, this loses one of its front discs, but none of its quality, stance or attitude, and a blacked-out 8-Ball Vision; a malevolent-looking cross between a street version of their flagship tourer and a stealth bomber, with none of its high-tech chassis breaking cover beneath a lustrous layer of deep gloss black bodywork.

THE CAROLE NASH INTERNATIONAL MOTORCYCLE & SCOOTER SHOW 2009

BIKES If you’re looking for something a little less austere, dripping with chrome and boasting much bolder paint schemes, the Vegas and Kingpin also benefit from the bigger 106/6 engine, bringing them up to the same specification as the Hammer and more radical Hammer-S and Vegas Jackpot models. The European range is topped off by signature editions created by the first family of custom bikes, Arlen & Cory Ness. There’s exceptionally good news for those looking for a stylish but traditional touring bike, because Victory are showcasing their brandnew Cross-platform models, the classically styled Cross Roads and the more technically advanced Cross Country; which will be seen for the first time in the UK at this years NEC show. Scheduled for a full launch towards the end of summer 2010, with EUWVTA under their belt, these two new touring models are displayed alongside the radical CORE concept bike; that brought the technology of the Vision to street level, and with massive, solid panniers, offering a class-leading 80-litres of storage,

carefully integrated into the overall design, they manage to carry off the twin virtues in this sector of practicality and style. At the top of the range is the radical Vision Tour that Victory announced here at the show two years ago, and 2008 winner of the coveted MCN Bike of the Year award in the Tourer section. Renowned for its spacious accommodation for both rider and pillion; low seat height and all that you’d expect from a Twenty-First Century touring motorcycle. The Vision has a unique style that sets it apart from anything else on the road; a landmark motorcycle that redefines expectations. With the 8-Ball Vision now replacing the Vision Street, the model is only available

in Tour trim with its capacious trunk, but can easily be switched to the lighter Street trim by removing the upper box and covering its mounting with a trim panel avalible from the Pure Polaris accessory range, offering the best of both worlds for the seasoned traveller and style-conscious year-round rider. Victory continue to offer a range of styles and prices to make sure there is a bike for every requirement; torquey, effortless big-bore cruisers and touring models to suit all budgets. With its push into Europe, and confident range, Victory is demonstrating that the future of American motorcycles is as much about pressing forwards as looking back; come and see what Victory can offer you, on Stand 1E30 in Hall 1. •

HELMETS

YOUR GUIDE TO

Buying a helmet THE ONLY PIECE OF MOTORCYCLE CLOTHING WE’RE LEGALLY REQUIRED TO WEAR. THE DO’S, DON’TS AND WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING HELMET, AS TOLD BY PHOENIX - THE UK IMPORTER FOR ARAI HELMETS

2 HALL

2F35

WORDS LUKE BRACKENBURY PICTURES WWW.WHYARAI.CO.UK

I

t’s crazy. If you wanted to ride your bike in shorts, flip-flops, marigolds and a string vest, you’re perfectly able to by law - as long as you’re wearing a helmet that adheres to the ECE 22-05 standard or, to a lesser extent, the old British Standard 6658. Though many riders wouldn’t be foolish enough to simply rely on just a helmet for safety, there are plenty of people risking the most delicate part of the human body through some poor helmet choices.

KNOW YOUR HELMETS Open Face, flip-front, off-road, dual sports; there are different helmet options for all types and styles of bike, but nothing gives better protection than a full-face lid. The most popular construction methods for helmets are thermoplastic or multi-fibre. The positives of thermoplastic helmets are that they are quick, easy and therefore cheap to make. These are often helmets with a soft outer shell and a hard inner EPS (expanded polystyrene) liner. Multi-fibre helmets take a lot longer to make and are often built by hand using materials such as glass and carbon fibres. An Arai helmet can take up to 18 hours to make using their own special materials and fibres, ensuring each helmet meets Arai’s own individual higher standards. This manufacturing process gives a very strong outer shell which allows the use of a very soft, multi-density EPS inner liner. Arai adopt this ‘soft on the inside, super hard on the outside’ construction philosophy as usually the first thing to hit a helmet in the event of a crash is you from the inside. The softer EPS dissipates energy and simultaneously decelerates the brain by compressing.

0

SIZE MATTERS “I’d rather you wear a £50 polycarbonate helmet that fits correctly than an Arai that doesn’t,” Phoenix MD, John Wakefield, once said boldly. The point here is that no matter the helmet, the fit has to be right. An illfitting helmet has safety implications as it could rotate, causing more harm rather than protecting. Ever tried running in shoes too big? It’s a broken ankle waiting to happen. Phoenix technical manager, John Swann, says: “You’d be surprised how many riders wear the wrong size helmet, often too big. A helmet is supposed to be snug when it’s on, so don’t be put off if it’s a little tight getting your head in and out of it.” Helmet sizing is usually measured in centimetres and its best to go by these numbers as one manufacturer’s ‘small’ helmet may differ in size to another’s equivalent. Measure your head with a tape measure from just above the eyebrows to the back of your head that sticks out the furthest. As we all have various shaped heads like anything you wear, there will be fit variations between manufacturers and individual models. So try a few. Arai Five Star dealers offer a huge range of various interior padding sizes to create a custom fit for no extra charge.

SHOULD I BUY SECOND HAND? In short, no; buy the best new helmet you can afford. With a used helmet, its history isn’t known. Any damage might not be visible and who’d want to wear something that has been sweated in by someone else’s head and dirty hair? After time and, to an extent, a helmet will mould to a person’s head - there’s no guarantee it will match yours. SHOULD I BUY FROM THE INTERNET? Buying online does not give you chance to try the helmet on. Also, you’ve no idea where the helmets have been brought from and how they’ve been stored. In the UK, Phoenix will honour the warranty, inspect and service Arai’s that have been purchased through one of their many approved retailers. Check out the website (www.whyarai.co.uk) for your closest dealer. IT’S TAKEN A KNOCK. IS IT STILL SAFE TO USE? Sometimes. Crash or accident damage isn‘t always something that’s easily visible. The Arai factory-trained technicians at Phoenix inspect the inner and outer shells very carefully. For example, a helmet may look fine on the outside but if the EPS has been

THE CAROLE NASH INTERNATIONAL MOTORCYCLE & SCOOTER SHOW 2009

HELMETS

THE NEW ARAI QUANTUM (FLAG UK SHOWN) CAN BE SEEN AT THE SHOW

crushed, the helmet has done its job and its ability to absorb further impacts will have been compromised. If in doubt, check. Arai offer their UK customers a free safety check. TAKE CARE OF IT To get the best from a helmet and make sure it performs when it needs to requires only a little looking after. Don’t leave it on a bike - it will fall one day. Hanging it on the mirrors or using it as a carrying basket will also crush the protective inner lining. Also, don’t carry gloves in it as the Velcro can damage the lining, not to

mention all the dirt and dead flies on them rubbing off. Carrying it from the chin bar can crush the lining and dislodge the vents, plus sweat from hands will weaken this area. Speaking of which, propellant or petroleum-based cleaners will deteriorate the plastic parts after time. HOW LONG WILL IT LAST? If taken of care properly from new, a helmet should last five years. After time, heat and sweat, the energy absorbing qualities of the inner lining start to diminish which in turn affects the protection properties of the helmet.

hese days we take body armour in motorcycle clothing for granted but, if it hadn’t been for a British manufacturer, things could have been very different. Back in 1987 Knox developed the first motorcycle jacket to incorporate body armour, (under the Pro Tek brand), which was so innovative that it won an industry award for Best safety Product at the Motorcycle Trade Show in the following year. Within a year motorcycle clothing manufacturers were producing armoured bike clothing and Knox remained at the forefront of impact protection, going on to create the first CE-approved motorcycle protectors in 1995. Today Knox is the bestrecognised brand of impactprotection for riders - a recent Survey by Bike Channel revealed that Knox is the most popular protector, used by 66% more people than its nearest rival. In addition to the armour

that it supplies to clothing brands, Knox has also pioneered back protectors, producing the first CEapproved back protector in 1997 and the award-winning Stowaway, which rolled up into a carry bag, in 2000. Current British Superstock champion Alastair Seeley is one of many racers who relies on Knox to keep him safe on track. In May he survived a spectacular high speed crash at the NW200 road races; “Knox protection took the brunt of the impact and stood up very well to the crash” states Seeley. However back-protection is not just for the track; Spinal Research estimates that every week two British bikers end up in a wheelchair, and motorcycle accidents are one of the leading causes of spinal injury, not only in the UK but also in the USA, which is why Knox has been a partner to the THINK! road safety campaign for several years. The design team at Knox recognise that for road

This makes Knox the obvious choice for professional riders, such as the coaches at the California Superbike School; “I have been using the Contour Race for several years now and I just simply will not ride without it! It fits perfectly and comfortably and I never notice it when riding” Andy Ibbott - CSS School Director. Incredibly light but impact absorbent honeycomb cell technology helps to keep the weight down, while multi-adjustable waist and shoulder straps ensure that the back protector is held in just the

right spot. Venturi system venting and Spacer fabric are employed to keep things cool. Race quality back-protection for the road has never been more accessible and, after a helmet, it could be the most significant safety investment a rider can make. Over the past decade Knox has branched out into other extreme sports, creating CE-certified impact protectors suitable for motocross, (with help from Jamie Law of Relentless Suzuki), enduoro (as used on Enduro Africa), mountain biking, skiing, snowboarding and even jet-ski. FIT FOR WINTER COLD KILLERS WINDPROOF BASE LAYER KEEPS OUT THE COLD AIR WHILE RETAINING BODY WARMTH AND ITS ACTIVE STRETCH MAKES FOR A COMFORTABLE FIT UNDER MOTORCYCLE GEAR.

S

taying warm on a motorcycle can be a real challenge. Even on summer evenings, as the sun sets temperatures can fall dramatically and in winter core body temperature can drop very rapidly once the effects of windchill set in. Many riders suffer from moderate hypothermia without realising it, but the symptoms, which include drowsiness, fumbling and loss of judgement, are potentially disastrous when trying to control a powerful motorcycle. Traditionally motorcyclists kept warm by insulating themselves with layers of bulky clothing to prevent core body heat from escaping. However, wind chill literally blows away the layer of warm air between the body and the outer clothing, so insulation only offers short-term benefits to riders. Cold Killers solves this problem thanks to its unique combination of a water resistant windproof membrane with a 3D fleece liner. The membrane prevents cold wind and rain from penetrating the base layer, while the 3D fleece insulates, yet allows air to circulate freely, thus preventing perspiration from building up. That means riders can protect themselves from cold with one layer that fits comfortably beneath outer clothing, as Johnny Haynes, Chief Riding Coach of the California Superbike School (UK & Europe), confirms; “There is nothing more annoying than an under suit that bunches up! Elasticated cuffs, unobtrusive seams, lightweight materials and a soft lining make Cold Killers very comfortable and non-invasive to wear underneath leathers. I tried the Cold Killers sport top

& pants on a bitterly cold day at Brands Hatch and was very impressed indeed.” Softshell fabric, with exclusive active stretch, is key to Cold Killers’ reputation for comfort, as it allows for a close fit with freedom of movement, making this the ideal base layer for a wide variety of activities in addition to motorcycling, such as mountain biking, snow sports, hiking and horse riding. This season’s collection features fleece jackets, sports tops for men and women, long pants, under gloves, socks, neck tubes and balaclavas. Kirsty Johnson of the EPM Enduro Club recommends Cold Killers for off-road riding; “We started the day with a layer of Cold Killers as they are perfect for keeping you warm on the long road sections. With the windproof front and breathable back they keep you at just the right temperature while giving you the freedom to move once off road. When the sun appeared cold killers were thin and light enough to be stuffed quickly into a backpack.” See the full range of Cold Killers for men and women on the Knox stand in Hall 2, number 2E30 •
