the london international horse show - christmas edition 2012 official programme
on
behalf of the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI), the governing body of equestrian sport, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to London for a trio of FEI World Cup™ qualifiers with the seventh qualifier of the Rolex FEI World Cup™ Jumping, the fifth qualifier of the Reem Acra FEI World Cup™ Dressage and the sixth qualifier for the FEI World Cup™ Driving series 2012/2013. This event, its history and sporting legacy, is a wonderful backdrop to showcase three of the sport’s most exciting series: the FEI World Cup™ Jumping, which is now into its fourth decade and has expanded to include 16 leagues with no less than 134 qualifiers, the FEI World Cup™ Dressage, in its 28th year with four leagues and over 30 qualifiers, and the FEI World Cup™ Driving series, now into its second decade and host to the world’s best drivers as they compete over 9 stages for the ultimate indoor Driving trophy. To witness the power and precision of the horses as well as the intense concentration required by the world’s best riders, drivers, navigators and backsteppers at such close proximity is undoubtedly one of the secrets to the success of the FEI World Cup™ series and a tremendous example of how history and tradition can thrive in the 21st century. It has been a fantastic year for both Olympic and nonOlympic sport and the equestrian community, with great diversity, ability and sportsmanship leading us towards a more global and meaningful future. It is through series such as the FEI World Cup™ that we can continue to promote the values of our sport, our athletes and our noble equine partners and dig deep into the amazing talent around the world. We are delighted that Rolex has again honoured the FEI World Cup™ Jumping series in its role as title sponsor. Famous throughout the world for its high standards, quality, discretion and precision, Rolex is a very loyal partner with a deep understanding of our sport and we are very proud that the FEI World Cup™ series bears the name of a company that shares our high values. We are also very grateful to Reem Acra, title sponsor of the FEI World Cup™ Dressage series, for bringing a unique style, elegance and innovative aspect to the horse world. The New York-based fashion designer’s celebrity clientele includes Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry, Beyonce Knowles and Eva Longoria and the stylish discipline of Dressage is a perfect match for her brand.
I take this opportunity to thank the organisers of this event for their dedication and hard work and acting as a motor for international equestrian sport in the region. I would also like to thank the loyal volunteer body and sponsors, as well as the athletes, the enthusiastic public and the media representatives who ensure that our sport is given the visibility it deserves. The athletes you will watch and applaud here are among the world’s best and their performances demonstrate just how much can be achieved with focus and determination. In whatever capacity you are attending these FEI World Cup™ qualifiers I wish you an enjoyable event, conducted in the best spirit of great horsemanship.

when
THE NEW SEASON SIZZLES WITH EXCITEMENT
New York fashion designer, Reem Acra, first took up the titlesponsorship of the FEI World Cup™ Dressage Western European League and series final two years ago, the sport was already undergoing a tidal wave of change. Just like the world of haute couture, all sporting disciplines must remain open to progress, evolution and new ideas if they are to survive and thrive, and Dressage has experienced a dramatic transformation from predictable and sometimes pedantic, to surprising and sizzling with excitement in recent times. Its popularity and appeal has never been greater, especially in the aftermath of the phenomenally successful London 2012 Olympic Games. The decision to place the emphasis on the Grand Prix Freestyle to Music has been an important step on the road to success, and the woman who showed the way was The Netherlands’ Anky Van Grunsven. Over a 13-year period that began with her first win in Los Angeles, USA in 1995 riding the great Bonfire and her last on home soil in ‘sHertogenbosch in 2008 with Salinero, she dominated the FEI World Cup™ Dressage series with a record-setting nine victories. America’s Steffen Peters and Ravel broke the mould at Las Vegas, USA in 2009, but the Dutch were back on track again in 2010 when Edward Gal and the spectacular stallion, Totilas, stole the show while his compatriot, Adelinde Cornelissen partnering the charming chestnut, Parzival, has proven unbeatable ever since.
Dominant force
At the London Olympic Games, however, the British were the dominant force when taking both team and individual gold. Cornelissen had to settle for individual silver when 26-year-old Charlotte Dujardin produced an extraordinary score of 90.089 with Valegro, having already led the host country to victory in the team event. Riders of the highest calibre are now having their performances analysed by the judging panel in a whole new way, with power, expression and precision doing battle with lightness, selfcarriage and freedom of movement. It is a combination of all these elements that is required from the winning partnerships, and no mean feat when they can be achieved.

The German riders showed their grasp of the new-look style requirements, with a fresh young squad presenting a charming picture of harmony and elegance as they claimed team silver in London. Few doubt that the country which has such a long and distinguished tradition in this sport will be making a big impression over the forthcoming Reem Acra FEI World Cup™ Dressage Western European League season which begins at Odense in Denmark in October 2012 and concludes at the grand final in Gothenburg, Sweden in April 2013 after eight exciting qualifying rounds.
Best athlete award
Beirut-born Reem Acra also sponsors the FEI’s Best Athlete Award for the third consecutive year. Presented to Jumping rider Meredith MichaelsBeerbaum from Germany in 2009, it went to the Dutch Dressage duo of Edward Gal and the stallion Totilas in 2010 and to Adelinde Cornelissen in 2011. Decided by public vote, the Award honours both human and equine athletes who have demonstrated exceptional skill and fair play in any FEI discipline over the previous 12 months. Ms Acra, whose star-studded clientele includes Madonna, Angelina Jolie, Eva Longoria and Halle Berry, says the past winners “are to horse sport what some of my clients are to show-business. They have that extra sparkle that results from a combination of great talent, determination, commitment and unstinting hard work.” We can look forward to plenty more of that sparkle in the Reem Acra FEI World Cup™ Dressage 2012/2013 series and final over the months ahead. Rolex FEI World Cup™
when Switzerland’s Steve Guerdat stood on the second step of the podium at the Rolex FEI World Cup™ Jumping Final in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands last April he knew he had already achieved a great deal in his career. He had given his all in a two-way jumpoff against the clock, but was forced to yield to the pure determination of a horse and rider who, quite simply, never give up. America’s Rich Fellers held the trophy aloft with enormous pride. He had clinched the coveted crown of the indoor jumping season for his country for the first time in 25 years, and he did it after five previous attempts during which he came so close to victory on several occasions. And his partner throughout was a horse now in his 16th year, yet, like his 52-year-old rider, still filled with the passion, courage and grit that sets the best apart from the rest. Fellers’ and the stallion Flexible, a horse that was written off several times during his career due to illness and injury, have, like so many of the great champions of the Rolex FEI World Cup™ Jumping series before them, etched their names into hearts and history-books as legends in their own lifetimes.
Recurring theme
This is a recurring theme of the series that has gripped the minds and imagination of the participants and the public alike since its inception in 1978. The diminutive
the ting t e S
e Parkes By Louis t s e r the from t r a t ap bes
Austrian, Hugo Simon, and his giant of a horse, Gladstone, were first to take the title in Gothenburg, Sweden the following spring, and although the formula has undergone some changes down the years, the excitement has never waned. Partnerships like doublechampions Ian Millar and Big Ben from Canada and Great Britain’s John Whitaker and Milton are still held in awe, while four riders have placed themselves above all others in terms of winning performances. Germany holds the record for most victories, nine in total over the 34-year period since it all began, and both Marcus Ehning and Meredith MichaelsBeerbaum were three-time winners for this nation that has been so dominant in the modern sport. Simon made a sensational return, 17 years after his success in the inaugural season, to add a back-toback double with his gelding ET, while Brazil’s Rodrigo Pessoa and his fabulous stallion, Baloubet du Rouet, recorded their treble at consecutive finals between 1998 and 2000, an exceptional achievement by any standard.
Quality of performance
Quality of performance, astute judgment, split-second decisionmaking skills, reliability and style have all been key to success in this series that tests horses and riders throughout the super-tough qualifying rounds over the winter months. So it was the perfect fit when the distinguished watch-making company Rolex, which has a long association with equestrian sport, became title-sponsor of the Western European League and the grand annual Rolex FEI World Cup™ Jumping Final in 2007. The company is headquartered in Switzerland, which has produced just two FEI World Cup™ Jumping champions – Markus Fuchs, who triumphed with Tinka’s Boy in 2001,
36
and Beat Mandli, who came out on top with Ideo du Thot six years later. Now Switzerland has the reigning Olympic champion, as Steve Guerdat followed his narrow defeat at last season’s Rolex final by taking gold at London 2012. The 30 year old rider said in ‘s-Hertogenbosch that he was determined to “do better next time”, and having clinched Olympic glory after yet another thrilling jump-off that kept spectators on the edges of their seats he will be the man to beat, as he has another prestigious target clearly in his sights – the Rolex FEI World Cup™ Jumping 2012/2013 title. following
an exciting outdoor season with the FEI World Driving Championships for fourin-hand in Riesenbeck (GER) as the highlight, the Driving world can expect more thrilling competition as the sport moves indoors for the 12th season of the FEI World Cup™ Driving. Ten top class drivers will battle for the Driving World Cup title with nine of them hoping to beat four-time FEI World Cup™ Champion Boyd Exell (AUS), undefeated at the past four Finals. The qualification season consisted of 14 competitions throughout Europe which has led to the qualification of the Top 10 drivers from six countries for the 2012-2013 season, with the list headed by the man from Australia, Boyd Exell.
FEI World Cup™ Driving 2012-2013 The FEI World Cup™ Driving series is made up of eight competitions in Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Hungary, Great Britain, Belgium and France. London Olympia is joining the FEI World Cup™ Driving series for the first time after a successful try-out competition in 2011. Five drivers from the Top 10 will compete at each event and organisers may give wild cards. Scores from each driver’s best three events count to decide the start list for the Final. The top six drivers qualify for the Final, which will take place in Bordeaux (FRA) for the second consecutive year. Double World Champion and four times FEI World Cup™ Champion Boyd Exell has been virtually unbeatable for the past four seasons, but his opponents are getting closer every time and the gap between the top drivers is getting smaller. AGILITY STAKES
whilst
by
it may have been the year of the Olympics there is only one thing dog agility handlers are thinking about and thats Olympia, the home of one of the most important dog agility finals in the world – The Kennel Club Agility Stakes. It is an amazingly popular sport and a British one at that. It started in 1978 when the Kennel Club asked some dog trainers to put together a fun event for the main ring at Crufts and here we are 34 years later with agility being the leading canine activity sport in the world with countries as far afield as China, USA, Australia and of course the whole of Europe – in fact just about every country in the world has dog agility competitions including both World and European Championships. The popularity of agility in the UK continues and entries at Kennel Club licensed Championship and Open agility shows continue to increase year on year. This is no doubt helped by the fact that our Kennel Club allow
pedigree and non pedigree dogs to compete in the working disciplines shows which of course include agility. Unfortunately, this is not the case throughout the rest of the world where some countries will only allow crossbreeds to compete in very limited classes. Agility in the UK is definitely a sport for all dogs so if you want to ask the experts about agility then do call in to the Kennel Club stand in the shopping area where advice and information about licensed agility shows will be available. This is the 34th year that the Kennel Club Agility Stakes Finals have been held at Olympia and it is in itself is a world class event. In fact the only event that is comparable is Crufts. Certainly when it comes to Christmas it is the only place where the UK’s top handlers want to be. No dogs are invited to Olympia; every dog and handler has to earn the right to be in the final. Heats are held throughout the country during the year, culminating in a semi final at the City of Birmingham Championship Show in September, ensuring dogs not only have to come in the top five in one

of the qualifying classes competing with up to 450 handlers and dogs in each heat but then competitors also have to come out in one of the top places in the semi finals. The first day for agility at Olympia is Wednesday 19th and the curtain raisers are the ABC dogs – or I should say the “Anything But a Collie” dogs. As with all the competitions at Olympia, the handlers and dogs have had to qualify via a rigorous process just to compete in the finals at Olympia. Twenty heats were held at Kennel Club licensed shows, the 60 dog semi final was held at the City of Birmingham Show in September and the top 10 dogs have come forward to the first day at London Olympia. This is always a great competition with usually many different breeds competing including Australian Kelpies, Australian Shepherds, Crossbreeds, Beardie, Belgian Shepherd, Lurcher, Golden Retriever and even a Weimaraner. You certainly don’t have to have a fast collie to compete at the top level.

Dogs placed 1st to 10th compete in the evening Final, Dogs placed 11th to 20th compete in the afternoon event
We have 36 dogs coming forward to Olympia on the Saturday morning in the Main Arena where we have an Olympia Semi Final, the top ten of which qualify for the Grand Finals on the Saturday night with the next ten being invited to compete in another event on the Saturday afternoon. So you can be sure of one thing – you will be seeing the very best of the UK’s senior and advanced dogs competing! As usual with this class, it is dominated by Border Collies or Working Sheepdogs. They really are the athletes of Large Dog Agility so it is sure to be one of the most exciting finals this year. On the Sunday, we have the Kennel Club Novice Agility Stakes. This is for Novice dogs and not Novice handlers, as I think with most sports we have a grading system with grades 1-7. New dogs handled by experienced handlers start in grade 3 and this Novice class is open to dogs who, at the time of qualifying, were working in grades 3-5. Fourteen heats were held at Kennel Club licensed agility shows and is by far the most popular qualification event, with up to 1,000
dogs in each one of these qualifying shows with the top three dogs going forward from each class or part of if numbers dictated a split. These top dogs from the heats or split classes go forward to two semi finals, the same as the Large grade 6-7 dogs. These semi finals were as also held at the City of Birmingham Championship Show. Then from these two semi finals, the top 18 are invited to compete in the Olympia semi final on Sunday morning with the top ten going forward to compete in the Kennel Club Novice Agility Stakes Finals on the Sunday evening and those placed 11th to 20th invited to compete in a competition during the matinee performance. So this is another competition where the selection process ensures that only the very best of agility dogs are competing in what I’m sure will be an extremely exciting final. So whichever day you visit Olympia this year, you are definitely going to see some of the most exciting and fast agility competitions that the agility world has to offer,

including handlers who have competed in the Championships at Crufts and represented the United Kingdom at the World and European Agility Championships. Judging the agility at Olympia is one of the most prestigious once in a lifetime appointments available and hence only the most skilled, experienced and respected judges are invited and this year’s event is no exception. Our 2012 judge is Mrs Amanda Rodgers. Amanda is a championship agility judge, and judges throughout the UK on a regular basis, she competes at the highest levels and also organises and manages agility events and most importantly she is a well respected member of the agility community. For the competitors, qualifying for the Agility Stakes Finals at Olympia is the icing on the Christmas cake, and forget the Olympic Gold medals what they’re after is a red rosette and a beautiful piece of Kennel Club crystal engraved with the words “Kennel Club Agility Stakes Winner – Olympia 2012”. VETERAN HORSE SHOWING HOME PRODUCED SUPREME GRAND FINAL
once
again Veteran Horse Showing Ltd is honoured to hold its Supreme In Hand and Ridden Grand Finals at Olympia, all kindly sponsored by Dodson and Horrell Feed. This year we are hosting two classes with two Supreme Championships:
Supreme In Hand Supreme Ridden. On Saturday 22nd December 2012, 12 In Hand Horses/Ponies and 16 Ridden Horses/Ponies will be entering the competition ring, showing the audience why there is such a need for Veteran Horse Showing. The age of the animals are 15 to 30 years of age, of different breeds and types. From the thousands of veteran horses/ponies who have tried to qualify the 28 animals in the competitionare all champions in their own right. To get to the Grand Final, competitorshad to firstly qualify at an Area Show, the next stage was the championship accolade at a Regional Final. Veteran Horse Showing is unique, it is the only affiliated series solely for Horses/Ponies age 15 years and over, open to all breeds and types to compete from all walks of the equestrian world. The continued growth of the showing series has increased theamount of Area /Regional qualifiers throughout the UK and these shows provide an excellent opportunity for our members to extend the careers of their much loved veterans.

Classes are divided into 3 age groups: PRE-VETERAN – 15 to 19yrs VETERAN – 20 to 24yrs VETERAN PLUS – 25 yrs and over. The Series is purely for home produced, this means we cater only for the everyday nonprofessional person. Of the 1.9 million horses/ponies in throughout the UK, reports show that 33% are 15years of age and over. Within the equestrian world today most people will own or know someone with a veteran. Keeping these veterans in top condition is not an easy job. This is why the loving care, devotion and welfareis of utmost importance and taken most seriously, especially when most veterans are classed as ‘members of the family’. Veteran Horse Showingis managed by a dedicated voluntaryprofessional equestrian team whosecommitment is responsible for the success of the Series. In addition to the Showing Series, we offer a Veteran Dressage Series for the older horses/ponies from Preliminary to Medium levels. There are qualifiers within local shows, culminating in the annual National Dressage Championship For further information on Veteran Horse Showing/ Dressageplease visit our website www.veteran-horse-showing.co.uk Veteran Horse Showing Ltd supports the Veteran Horse Welfare Charity (which is a separate organisation) that cares for the welfare and management of the older horse/pony and relies solely on donations. The Veteran Horse Welfare Charity centre is based in Wales, visit: www.veteran-horse-welfare.co.uk I
