KRAKEN

Swimming On By

The Kraken is a giant octopus that lives in the darkest parts of the ocean. It appears at the surface of the water when it wants to give a ship a hug! Check out those tentacles on the inside of the arms.

The head is not a regular oval but instead is lopsided; one end is large while the other end is small. A Friendly Wave

Don't forget to count the Kraken's arms, since it needs all eight to give its best hugs!

The arms can really inform the emotion of the Kraken. This one looks friendly because it's waving! Angry Expression

Draw the oval head and start with some lines for the beginnings of the arms. 30

Continue to draw out the arms. They are bent and look a bit angry.

Water Beasts

Add black puffs to really how angry Kraken is! Kraken

FLYING ELEPHANT

31

W ings Down on Land

Although elephants are heavy, the Flying Elephant has no problem soaring in the skies with its powerful wings. It loves to fly during sunsets when the sky is pink.

To draw the elephant face on, start with the head, trunk, and ears. Elephant.

Draw the body and legs below.

Add the final touch of the wings facing downward. They're resting!

Sad Baby

A simple way to show emotions is by using the ears and wings. By drawing them downward, the Flying Elephant appears sad. The wing is like an elongated rectangle, which you can add feathery details to.

As with most of the creatures you draw, start with circular shapes for the head and body.

Add the ears and limbs, not forgetting the trunk.

48

Beasts of the Air

Soaring on High

Start with the head.

Continue with the body and limbs laying flat out.

The wings are also flat out, because the Flying Elephant is ready for action. Flying Elephant

UNCIAL HAND

C A P I T AL L E TT E R S T R UC TUR E S

The Uncial hand is a capital, or majuscule, hand, probably evolved from North African scripts and in use in Europe as a book script from the fourth to the eighth centuries. The version shown here is a modern form, written with a comfortable pen angle. It is a very round letter form, well-spaced along the line, with any ascenders and descenders minimal in height. It is

The beginnings of the lower-case letters can be seen in the Uncial capital script. The letters D, H, K, and L have ascenders that are higher than the capital height, and F, G, P, R, and Y fall slightly below the base line. Ascenders and descenders should extend between one and two nib-widths. All curved structures in the Uncial hand relate to the extended O shape. Serifs are small and restrained.

THE STRUCTURE

THE STROKES

THE GROUPS

The letter O is wider than a circle and the top strokes of C, G, Q, and S are flattened.

With the pen at 25°, pull down toward the base line in a wellrounded curve.

Overlap fractionally at the top to join smoothly.

Pull down to the base line in a smooth, round curve, overlapping at the bottom carefully.

The M is almost two O shapes wide with the second stroke springing from the central stem.

Make the same smooth curve as for O, although not as long.

Overlap carefully at the top, form a short curve, then pull straight down to the base line.

Make another arch based on the O. Balance the arches internally in area and shape.

The bowl of R is an extended O with a short tail.

Hold the pen at 25° and make a serif. Pull down vertically to fractionally below the base line.

Make the right-hand side of an extended O. End below halfway and don't meet the vertical.

Finish the letter with a short, diagonal tail.

A wide letter at the top, V commands the same area as O.

With a pen angle slightly steeper than 25°, make a serif and pull the pen diagonally to the right.

At the bottom of the letter, push the pen up very slightly to the right to create a point.

Flatten the pen angle, make a small serif, and pull the pen down to overlap the base stroke.

written with a very rhythmical movement and looks better in longer lines of text. Practice these patterns to ensure you are keeping the correct 25° angle on your nib.

PE N P A TTERNS Uncial letter stems are short and the letters themselves are sturdy. All round letters are based on an extended circle which, when placed together, creates space along the line, giving a laterally stretched appearance to the letter forms. The diagonal letters are the width of o.

Try to keep these shapes as round as you can.

Try some of the straight letters with these shapes.

This shows the two pen strokes that make round letters.

Try some round shapes.

PE N AN GLES It is important to keep the pen’s nib at 25° all the time you are writing. This is how the shapes of the thick and thin strokes are made. If you change the angles, the shapes will alter. The diagonal letters v, w, x, y can have a slightly steeper angle on the first stroke.

25˚

L E T T E R H EI GHT Uncial is written at 4 times the width of your nib for the height of the letter. Measure the height by making nibwidth squares as shown, then rule the tramlines that far apart.

THE ALPHABETS

These patterns go from left to right.

Now the patterns become more complicated.

Still maintain the 25° angle on the nib.

Writing from right to left makes these strokes difficult.

These small patterns are the shapes of s.

These are the diagonal letters that you can write.

Now try these letters.

Farm animals often remain fairly still, as much of their time spent grazing or dozing. Before starting to draw, study your subject, looking for the main shapes and begin by drawing the connecting parts, such as an ear, the side of the face, and front leg. These sketches were drawn by Sandra Fernandez.

How to

of creatures

L earn to draw all kinds of creatures

When animals are constantly on the move, you will need to content yourself with just a few lines outlining basic shapes.

3. Watch how piglets behave with their mother— for example, the litter starting to suckle. Capture these moments by rapidly scribbling down as much information as possible to create a summary of what is happening at one given moment.

1. When sketching from life, piglets produce so much activity that it is hard to know where to start. Once you have made a few rough line on the paper, you will find that your drawing hand is reacting more quickly.

Preliminary warm-up sketches help the eye-brain-hand coordination to “click into gear,” enabling you to react quickly when something of interest occurs.

David Boys

Never be content with just one viewpoint—move to a better vantage point if necessary.

2. When animals are sleepy and content, there is time to study the shapes and forms more closely and look at specific detail. You could also bring some background elements into your sketches to suggest your animal’s surroundings.

As the animals rest for longer periods, you will be able to retain more information, allowing you to firm up your sketches.

fashionable or traditional by the very nature of the design system the artist creates and the materials used in the packaging. It should also lead consumers through the functions of opening, dispensing and reclosing without making them work too hard to get to the product. In complex packaging, there may be enclosures, hang-tags and labels to design. The extended design system can enhance the product but should always remain true to the brand. In addition to housing and protecting the product, package design is advertising at the place where the consumer actually makes their purchase, sometimes in large displays that become

Interpretation and detail

In editorial design, the content must be carefully considered for its message and the author’s point of view. A book jacket is, in effect, a piece of packaging that advertises both product and publisher. It should be approached in the same way as an advertising campaign, but the imagery can sometimes deliver its

T Cohesion and variety The clever use of smartphone dimensions within the advertising for the Shine app puts focus on the purpose of this platform. The bright, yet changing, colour scheme shows cohesion but also variety, making this seemingly simple design concept quite complex.

SP Spine-out The book’s

front cover should indicate the contents as well as grab the attention, drawing in potential readers or buyers. With this in mind, consider the role of the book’s spine: what information would your audience need about the publication if they could see only its spine on a bookcase?

S Form and colour The use of a simple colour scheme ties together all the elements of the WayUp platform. The identity has been used subtly to anchor the online platform, but also as an aesthetic element on the tote bag, created by enlarging and cropping the smaller details that make this brand what it is.

message in a more thought-provoking, poetic way. Any book must compete with all the others on display, leaping out from the shelf before informing potential buyers as to what the book might be about. In some book displays only the spines will be visible, so how these detailed areas work as small-space designs is important. The same principle of multiples in package display is in effect here, but on a much more economical scale. A series of covers with spines in bold black text on acid colours will create an impressive patch when a dozen or so are stacked along a shelf. The spine should be part of the overall cover image and work as a stand-alone design element when seen in multiples. Book jackets begin telling the story to the consumer. A concept for a book-jacket design will be influenced

134

by a number of factors, but the concept development should begin by considering the content. Consider whether the book is fiction or non-fiction; consider the genre the book belongs to; the subject matter – is it fun, grave, romantic or scary; and, most importantly, who the book is targeting for readership. When designing book jackets, good designers make it their business to ask the publisher lots of questions – and to read the book! After all, your jacket design should inspire people to buy the book. Think about how your design might stand out enough to entice curiosity, or be provocative enough to convey information in an intriguing way, and try to create visuals that represent your author and the subject matter of the book.

PRACTICE PRINT PRODUCTION AND PRESENTATIONS PRINT MEDIA

• High-quality images can be achieved by providing a higherresolution print. • Works on a wide range of print media such as paper, fabric, plastic, wood, metal, leather and glass. • Cost per printed piece decreases as the quantity increases. • Quality, cost-effectiveness and bindery finishing are fully controllable in large-run jobs. • Modern offset presses use computer-to-plate technology, increasing economy and quality.

100Y 100M

100C 100M

Despite the fact that digital printing is considered much easier, traditional printing methods continue to thrive, partly because of the textures, visuals and detail created by the process, which cannot be replicated in digital, no matter how hard we try. There is also the joy of the craftsmanship itself to consider: nothing is more rewarding than printing through traditional means.

100% magenta

100K

R Full-colour printing CMYK is the most popular form of print used daily in book and magazine production. Be aware that 100C 100Y 100M combined does not equate to 100K.

GLOSSARY R Full black Choose this process when your halftone

separate, with no overlaps, giving you complete control of the colour onto the background. The second option – which can be difficult to set up, but is perhaps more rewarding and less time-consuming if done properly – is to have overlaps of colour. This process means you have fewer layers to create as you are relying on colour mixes to create your image. For example, if you print

two yellow circles, followed by a layer of two blue circles, overlapping one yellow circle with one blue circle only, you should be left with a yellow, green and blue circle. Three colours, with two layers. Interestingly, the Adobe program Photoshop is designed to use layers, mimicking these traditional print processes. Offset lithography

P The principle in action This press diagram shows an exposed plate wrapped around the rotating plate cylinder, where the image is dampened and inked before being transferred onto the blanket cylinder. Q On a roll Most presses feed one sheet of paper through at a time, but larger web presses, which are used for long runs, draw paper from a roll.

Water or dampening rollers

Ink rollers

Plate cylinder

Blanket cylinder Press sheet

Lithography is the process of printing from a flat surface, which has been treated so as to repel the ink except where it is required for printing. To separate your coloured layers in traditional lithography, the printer will make plates, a separate one for each of the four-process ink colours, or an individual plate for each Pantone, or spot colour. Most large presses have room for at least six inks and can accommodate varnish as part of the process. Requesting too many spot colours may cause the job to run through the press more than once, and can strongly affect printing costs. This printing process is based on the principle that water and oil do not mix. The digitally produced printing plate is treated chemically so that the image will accept ink and reject water. The simplified diagram (left) shows an exposed plate wrapped around the rotating

plate cylinder, where the image is dampened and inked. The inked image on the plate is then transferred onto the blanket cylinder. The rubber blanket transfers the image onto the stock, which has been carried around the impression cylinder (adjusted depending on the stock used). This planographic process is rapid, and the plate is inked on each rotation. Although considered a traditional method, this process is still widely used by commercial printers due to the higher quality of printing produced, and is most cost-effective for quantities over a few hundred – and even more so with quantities of higher volume.

Flexography: Method of printing that uses rubber relief plates. Gravure: Method of printing that uses plates with recessed cells of varying depths. Offset lithography: The digitally produced printing plate is treated chemically, so that the image will accept ink and reject water. Plates: Separate plates enable the printing of separate colours. Relief: A printing process that uses a raised surface, such as letterpress. Screen printing: Method of printing that uses stencils.

P Surface printing There are many ways to transfer your

designs onto different materials and products, so consult your vendor and printer to discuss the various options. Consider how many colours you will be printing and how many impressions you need. Most surfaces can be offset-printed, screen printed or have vinyl applied, but new digital technologies are rapidly adding even more options.

Many designers and printers prefer the ‘mega-black’ or ‘super-black’ formula for large areas of black. This formula, at 60C, 40M, 40Y, 100K, should be used in imagery, not text, and provides a much richer interpretation over 100K alone to create black.

Colour

In traditional printing techniques (that is, everything except digital printing), your digital artwork needs to be separated into the constituent colours in which it will be printed. The printing process needs to be done in layers, one colour at a time, and alignment therefore plays a very important role in production. You will have two options: the first is to keep all your coloured layers

There are a number of clever ways that the cover design or the format of your publication can hint at its purpose and contents. For example, the small publication Common Thread is bound together using looped staples, which are usually used for hanging publications in an exhibition context. In addition, the front cover is slightly smaller in width, giving you a glimpse of the physical publication inserts and the themes and contents inside.

Lavandula L av e n d e r .

.

COMMON NAME

L av e n d e r i s a g r e at garden plant as it’s drought-tolerant and fairly easy to grow. Best grown in the ground, it lends itself well to being combined with equally delicate and aromatic shrubs. It also encourage bees and other pollinating insects. A perennial plant, lavender will return each year and provide you with a healthy supply of flowers from late spring through summer, year after year, that can be used as cut stems in arrangements, or in scented pillows. Lavender season typically runs from May to September and will generally peak sometime between mid-July and end of August.

COMMON NAME

A l s o k n o w n a s lion’s tooth or wild dagga, lion’s tail can be an annual, perennial, deciduous, or evergreen shrub. L. leonurus is the variety most commonly available dried, striking fluffy reddish orange flowers, approximately 2¼ in (6 cm) in length, in the fall and early winter. Use lion’s tail in sculptural, avantgarde arrangements, or as single stems gathered together as pictured here. It is a real “statement flower” and can have just as much impact used alone.

Choosing Vessels The vessels and vases for my arrangements come a very close second in importance to the stems I use. A beautiful vase is special in itself and finding one that’s suitable for a specific arrangement or display can feel like an incredibly satisfying achievement.

1 Consider carefully whether your arrangement suit a round-, oval-, square-, or oblong-shaped vase. Equally important is the height and width—is the vessel you need short and stout, or tall and thin? You’ll find you’ll need all sorts of options once you start experimenting with different arrangements. Also pay attention to the shape and width of the opening of your vessels.

There are an array of materials and finishes to consider —from clear or colored glass to glazed or unglazed ceramics in shiny or matt finishes. Over the years I have developed a real love of stoneware, in particular studio pottery, and hand-built or hand-thrown pieces as they have so much character and tell a story of their own. As the flowers you will be working with are dried, you don’t have to worry about your vessel being watertight so you can also consider using basketry, bowls, reclaimed wreaths, or organic structures as containers for your projects. Also consider jugs, pitchers, mugs, and bowls for your displays. If you foster an open mind, you’ll gradually start to see the potential in things you may not have before. In turn, this flexibility will add a whole new dimension to allow you to explore your creativity. In terms of sourcing, there is a variety of places you can search for vessels. Department stores are great for glassware and larger vases. Homeware shops are a good option if you are looking for something to suit a fashionable or trend-driven interior. Some flower shops will also sell a selection of vases as they are making a wide range of bouquets daily—they could be a good first point of call. My absolute favorite place to source vessels are thrift stores, antique shops, or yard sales as not only are you reusing something that has been discarded by someone but you can often find the most unique pieces and build up a lovely collection in a sustainable way at a really reasonable price.

Contrast-Carved Planter The technique of pinching clay to form a vessel is the oldest form of pottery. There is something extremely therapeutic about this way of working. It's a slow process—much slower than the potter’s wheel—but the advantage is that it allows you to really understand clay as a material, how it behaves, and how best to handle it.

CLAY

The clay I've used for this project is a grogged black stoneware. With the intentionally

Approx. 2 pounds (1 kg) of finely grogged black stoneware

imperfect shape and the maker’s marks that are left by the pinching technique, I think it

TOOLS AND MATERIALS For Forming Banding wheel Surform Sponge For Carving Loop tool Liquid latex Flexible metal kidney-shaped rib

adds a timeless feel to the piece. I've gone for a finely grogged clay rather than a coarse grog. This gives the texture I'm after but doesn't get in the way of the carving. If the clay is too heavily grogged, it would interfere with the pattern and be difficult to carve. The carving on this planter is a simple overlapping pattern made with a loop tool. The striking effect of this piece comes from the contrast of textures—the rough, earthy black clay and the smooth gloss of the white glaze highlighted by the carved design. I love the contrast of the white glaze on the black clay—it really makes the design stand out. You can experiment with different carved designs on your planter, revealing just a little of the black clay underneath will give the same striking effect.

FlowER PRESSing TOOLS AND MATERIALS

Floral crowns are a big tradition in Scandinavia, especially in Sweden for midsummer, where making a crown is one of the skills that many girls learn. You follow the same technique as for the spring wreath, but use mostly flowers and as little green as possible. Here, I decided to cover only half of the twig frame, which is another option when creating a wreath as it enables you to showcase both the flowers and the frame.

S P E C I F I C AT I O N S

GREAT FOR KIDS

FlowER CRown

Do you remember the wreath we made in spring (see page 48)? I kept the frame because you can decorate it over and over again throughout the year with different nature finds. This time, I chose some late-summer flowers and made a summer crown. This would look beautiful hanging as a wreath, as well as adorning your head at a summer garden party.

Barbora Kurcova

Drying flowers is a great way to preserve and enjoy beautiful petals the whole year round. There is a bit of magic involved, too, as you never quite know what the outcome will be—some flowers will keep their color perfectly, whereas others will fade. Apart from a little patience, you don’t need anything special to complete this project, so get ready to preserve countless memories from summer walks.

1 To ensure the flowers don’t go moldy, you should always pick them on a dry, sunny day. If you can, start pressing the flowers as soon as possible—take a book and rubber band with you on walks and begin the process there and then.

PROTECTION Throughout history, witches have used magically charged symbols called “sigils” to hold a specific intention and protect, heal, and manifest. They are quite easy to create and extremely powerful. THE CREATION Sigils are made by writing out an intention, and then using a sequence of letters to make them into an appealing shape. Depending on your style, you can use whichever artistic direction you’d like to create your sigil. The steps are generally the same, but you can either use a “witch’s wheel” to help guide you or you can arrange your letters however you’d like. The most important points of a sigil, however, are that it contains your intention, resonates with you, and is charged to hold your magic. Once it is created and charged, you can write this magical symbol on whichever and however many surfaces you desire to bring in that magic. You can carve a sigil on candles, draw it in your grimoire, or even anoint your skin with makeup/oil in the sigil design before it absorbs into your skin.

Nature Amulet

The Future in Your Hand

The Sacred Horse and the Poppy

The Romanies could tell your fortune by your hand shape alone. Apart from the obvious feel of rough skin that told them you were a laborer, or the soft skin that hinted at a lady, the shape of the palm and fingertips gave the palm reader insight—favorable or unfavorable—into the inquirer’s future. The benefit of “far-seeing” through palmistry is that steps can be taken to correct any adversities that may be indicated. This means that we do not have to remain victims to the future! In this section you can discover for yourself the hand shapes that reflect the underlying currents of fate and fortune—good luck or bad luck. Armed with this knowledge you can take control of your future.

The Hands and Their Shapes Which hand do you read from? The hand of your future fortunes is your dominant hand, called in palmistry the “active” hand: If you are right-handed, it is your right hand; if lefthanded, your left. What, then, of the shapes of hands? → The Square Hand Down to Earth The square hand literally has square fingertips and a square look about it, usually on a short, fairly squat palm. The characteristics are practicality and conventionality. It is a useful hand—those with square hands can turn those hands to anything. They are the salt of the earth. Industry, business, and commerce are suited to them because they have methodical minds and adhere to the rules.

18 Revelations within Us

A talisman—from the greek word telesma—is an object over which a rite has been completed to imbue it with a specific intention. It has the task of warding off ill luck as well as supporting and giving energy to the special purpose for which it has been chosen. The word amulet has its origins in the Latin word amuletum; it was a “thing,” be it bracelet, trinket, object, metal, or parchment, inscribed with magical signs.

Fortunate: This particular shape of hand is the most materialistically lucky. With these hands your dreams come true because they have the Midas touch in business, and they usually have exceptionally good fortune in making deals. Unfortunate: People with these hands need to listen to their hearts as well as their heads. Rigidity and dogmatism can prevent them grasping at opportunities.

Fingers Fingers and thumb are wide and short, with square tips.

Palm The palm of the square hand appears short and broad.

Palmistry 19

Copying Your Amulet If you do not have access to a photocopier, you can trace the templates of the horse and poppy provided, in order to reproduce the nature amulet.

16 Nature Amulet

Vegetable and animal symbols have a high place in the list of amulets, the belief being that favorable influences of luck and protection are inherent in nature’s objects. The horse became a sacred symbol of nature early on. Stone horses guarded the imperial tombs of Nanking, and the prehistoric White Horse cut into a hillside in England is thought to be a representation of the Celtic horse goddess Epona, “the Divine Horse.” The poppy flower depicts the great Mother Nature, embracing the rise of the Moon, fertility, and abundance. Divination emerges from the flower’s symbolism, the five-fold petals representing the human senses, the light of the sun, and the primeval water. The cup of the flower is a perfect manifestation of the wheel of fortune: The poppy is a bringer both of beauty and of dissipation through its opium, revealing both the good and bad omens of nature.

Your Nature Amulet Together, these pictures make your personal amulet from nature. The combination of the protective White Horse and Poppy encompasses positive earthly spirits, and protects from any evil entities through the Divine Horse.

This is a useful ritual to practice before you work with the Fortunes from Nature chapter. 1. Begin by photocopying the two images on the following pages—preferably in color. Cut them out and place them together. 2. To energize your copied amulet, visualize a wand of transparent ethereal matter held between the curved forefinger and thumb of your left hand—a stick of bright strong light vibrating at a strong, intense rate. 3. Wave it over your amulet backward and forward three times. The “light” wash will awaken and strengthen your amulet’s energy and help your nature amulet give added protection. 4. You can carry this nature amulet with you. Fold the images up and put them in a sealed white envelope.

Bright red is the most stimulating color in the visible spectrum and has a “wake up” and “alert” vibration to it. It has long been grabbing your attention through stop signs and stop lights, popular caffeinated beverages, advertising campaigns, and more. Yellow has been linked to the energy of waking up due to its association with the sun’s bright light. The sun’s light is actually white, however the Earth’s atmosphere shifts our perception of color so we mostly see the sun as yellow, and sometimes red-orange. Turquoise joins this duo as a stimulating color due to its aqua hue associated with the sea. Some of the places with the clearest turquoise waters also have fresh air, conjuring up a breeze, a refreshing nature, and the quality of “get up and go.”

Blue, as you previously learned, begins the cool colors side of the visible light spectrum. This cool color has long been linked with peaceful, relaxing feelings. Different than the bright turquoise sea, the predominant association with blue ocean waters tend to elicit feelings of serenity. Blue is said to lower the heart rate and blood pressure, plus reduce anxiety through its tendency to feel soothing and shift the body’s hormones and relaxation response. The pale blue tint, as mentioned before, is created by adding white to blue and provides the most calming effect of blue. White offers its own version of calming in this color group as your mind is somewhat led to subliminally soften the blue hue due to the juxtaposition of the pale blue and blue.

Green, Bright Violet

Gold, Green

Most Balancing

Most Centering

Green is the middle of the visible light spectrum, and thus the most balancing of all the colors. It represents the “middle way.” Green is the great balancer of all opposites. For your self care it can help balance an association of an “over” to an “under” or a “more” to a “less” e.g. overweight vs. underweight, overactivated vs. under-activated, more doing vs. less being or more being vs. less doing, more activity vs. less activity and so on. Green can be an aide to help you balance any two extremes. Bright violet is a unique rainbow color in that it is a blend of red and blue. Hidden within violet are two opposites- a warm color and a cool color. So using bright violet in your color therapy provides its own balancing effect.

Gold is a hidden gem of a color, created by combining orange and yellow. Even though both orange and yellow are warm colors and generally stimulating, when combined they create a more subdued energy. Throughout history, the color gold has been equated to a form of sustenance and stability. This association leads your mind to the quality of perseverance and is one of the main reasons that gold can have a centering effect on your psyche, providing comfort. With green being the center of the color spectrum, centering really becomes its true identity. Coupling green with gold provides a perfect duo of soothing color therapy for any feeling of being “out of sorts” or discontent.

Over the years I have seen first hand how essential oils can facilitate change in people's lives. I've seen essential oils heal physical ailments and help boost the immune system. They hold strong psychological properties, supporting people as they move through difficult emotions such as stress, grief, or emotional trauma. They also have what I like to call magical properties, helping to deepen our connection with the world around us and sowing the seeds for us to create the life we want for ourselves. We can benefit from all three of these types of properties by establishing essential oil rituals that are woven into our everyday lives.

Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, I started working with essential oils in the late 90s after taking a natural soap making class at a local aromatherapy shop. I went on to apprentice under an aromatherapist for the next ten years, learning the ins and outs of aromatherapy, and how to utilize essential oils and other plant-based ingredients. I am currently studying to become a certified aromatherapist, as recognized through the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy, the Alliance of International Aromatherapists, and the International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists. This practice, like many in the book, has its roots in India, and is a type of pranayama: a breath control practice used in yoga and meditation. It stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system (see pages 24–27), which allows for relaxation. This breath is great for clearing out stuck energy, bringing mental clarity and focus and reducing anxiety. Studies have shown that this practice can also help manage the pain response.

Ready to Start If you would like to, set an alarm to time your practice – between three and five minutes. Sit cross-legged with your back straight. Feel free to lean against a wall or other stabilizing element. When you feel ready, you can close your eyes. If you would rather keep them open, rest your gaze on the floor or a wall.

This exercise uses diaphragmatic breathing, expanding the belly on each inhale. See pages 74–77 for a refresher. It is best practised on an empty stomach. Do not practise if you are sick or congested.

1 After a full exhale, use your right thumb to close your right nostril. Inhale through your left nostril. Remember that each inhale should fill your belly, rather than your chest. 2 At the top of the inhale, release the right nostril and use your pointer finger to close your left nostril. Exhale through your right nostril.

1

3 Inhale again through your right nostril, then, at the top of the inhale, close it with your thumb. 4 Release your left nostril and exhale through the left side. 5 This is one complete cycle. Continue for up to five minutes, striving for even and balanced inhales and exhales. Make sure to end each cycle by exhaling on the left side before beginning a new cycle.

The trapezius muscle covers a large portion of the back, yet it is rarely intentionally stretched. Once you find the sweet spot with this stretch, you may find yourself doing it every day!

Many people find this stretch to be one of the most relieving for general shoulder tightness and tension. Perhaps that’s why so many mainstream yoga classes make time to play with this pose.

How To Do It

How To Do It

Sit in a chair. Lean forward slightly and grab the outside of each opposite thigh with your hands. Slowly start to lean back while rounding the spine, and at the same time resist this movement with the hands grabbing the thighs.

Further Considerations

This can sometimes be a difficult stretch for people to feel. You may need to increase the rounding of the back and the resistance from the hands in order to properly feel this stretch.

Starting in an all-fours position, take one arm and thread it behind the other until the outside of your shoulder is resting on the floor.

Further Considerations

You may need to sink down towards your heels if you are finding it difficult to rest your shoulder on the floor.

Tip To experience the fullest expression of this stretch, be sure to walk the non-stretched arm overhead, while placing the side of your head on the floor. At the same time bring your gaze towards the ceiling.

Easier felt or experienced than described, the benevolent Korean virtue of Jeong is both simple and complex. This sacred emotional bond is seen in daily acts of unselfish generosity; it is expressed via unconditional love, respect, understanding, sympathy, and empathy, all without expectation of getting something in return. This altruistic concept proves the values and benefits of kindness, consideration, and communication flow unobstructed through all aspects of life in Korea. This book will describe how to infuse your life with jeong via a variety of meaningful examples.

Often translated as resilience or perseverance, the Finnish concept of sisu (SEE-soo) is about never giving up, even when a task is seemingly impossible. At the heart of sisu is the idea of confronting adversity, whether that be losing a job or the end of a relationship, and having the courage to use that experience to grow. Running a marathon and feel like you’ve hit a wall? Got a business idea but too scared to try it? Channeling sisu can be the key to overcoming both mental and physical blocks. Considered a hot topic in popular psychology, it can also have a positive impact on mental health. This book explains how anyone can embrace sisu and channel their inner courage to make the most of any situation.

Modern life seems to become more and more complicated every day. Despite the fact that we are more comfortable than in any other

time in history, we still seem to be perplexed about what it means to be human, and what it means to live a good life.

Over 2,000 years ago a group of Greek and Roman philosophers,

called the Stoics, tackled these very questions. They believed that our true aim as humans should not be comfort, possessions, and wealth, but to closely align ourselves with nature, and in doing so, we would find what they called eudaimonia—a flourishing life.

BEDITATION

BEDITATION Originally coined by Laurence Shorter, author of The Lazy Guru’s Guide to Life, the term “Beditation” was meant as a way to start your day with “a moment of morning mindlessness” instead of waking up to agitated thoughts and worries. The meaning of beditation has evolved from morning to bedtime and is now adopted widely by wellbeing practitioners, yoga instructors, and even by the British National Health Service. There are no firm rules to practice beditation. The objective is to practice body, mind, and brain relaxation while laying down or sitting in your bed, right before you fall asleep.

r Bach, an English homeopath, sought to cure patients holistically, intending to treat the person as an individual depending on their temperament and personality. This healing system, comprised of 38 distinct liquid remedies, aids in alleviating emotional and mental stress. Each one works specifically with a particular emotional state. Used since the 1930s, Bach Flower remedies are nurturing and supportive during pregnancy, birth, and beyond. When varying emotions are associated with pregnancy, acknowledge each as unique to your journey—witness, embrace, love, and accept them in their fullness.

ur breath affects us physically, mentally, and emotionally. Connecting to it enables us to connect to our body, feeling grounded, loved, and nurtured, taking time to turn our intention inward. Breathwork can strengthen the body and mind throughout pregnancy and play a vital role on our mothering journey, affirming the bond between mother and baby. As we physically breathe in, we inhale oxygen, which our body needs to function. When we breathe out, we exhale carbon dioxide, a waste gas that our body doesn’t need. The same process can be applied with emotional clearing for clarity—as we breathe in, we invite an openness and expansion, when we breathe out, we exhale and release what no longer serves us, releasing the body and mind of tension. Babies in the womb especially enjoy the union the breath creates between mother and baby, giving time to bask in the release of oxytocin, the love hormone.

The Menstrual Phase

How to make the most of your menstrual phase? Mood

What is it? Menstrual

Luteal

Follicular

This is the bleed phase of your cycle, which can last between 2 to 7 days in a typical 28-day cycle. Menstruation is triggered by the drop in progesterone that occurs due to the absence of an egg becoming fertilized, sending signals to shed the endometrial lining in a nonconception cycle. Instructed by hormones and enzymes, structural changes degrade the uterus shedding blood which flows out from the vaginal passage as a period in a process that can last up to a week, until the endometrial lining is clear and reset for the follicular phase. There it builds again in preparation for potential fertilization.

What are hormones doing in this phase? On the first day of your bleed, the sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone are at their lowest point of the cycle but, stimulated by follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) released from the pituitary gland, these hormones slowly start to rise again throughout this week, sending signals to the endometrial tissue cells to grow. Days 4 to 6 FSH and enzymes stimulate the ovarian follicles, and oestrogen and progesterone continue to rise. By day 5 to 7 a single follicle—known as the Graafian follicle —will mature until it is ready for release during the ovulatory phase.

Where does it sit in the cycle phases?

Your bleed signals a big shift in levels of oestrogen and progesterone that have previously been in high circulation, and in some women this hormonal drop can bring significant mood changes and negatively affect energy levels. For others, it is a time of emotional release after a premenstrual week and you may feel quite relieved. Different responses to hormone shifts are common but in any case, it’s likely you will feel more balanced as your hormones start to rise throughout this week, leaving you feeling more positive, emotionally balanced, and optimistic. Try the botanicals, vitex agnus cactus, or ashwagandha for hormone balancing and stress support, and be gentle on yourself during these emotionally sensitive days. Try positive self-talk, meditation, and doing things that make you feel happy.

Work and focus

The first day of your menstruation phase signals the beginning of your new cycle and is the first of your 4 phases. This phase typically lasts around 7 days in an average 28-day cycle but it can be as short as 3 days in a healthy cycle.

After the brain fog that high progesterone can produce in the luteal phase, oestrogen is now on the rise which can have very positive effects on brain function and it is likely that you will feel increased mental clarity, focus, and determination toward the later part of this phase. By day 3 to 7, you may find that it now feels like a great time to get back onto planning bigger tasks, stepping out of your comfort zone, and you may find you are feeling more detail-oriented, creative, and ambitious.

Energy Due to the sedative effects of the high levels of progesterone that have been circulating in the previous phase, you may be feeling quite low in energy and physical tasks, or the idea of exercise, may feel harder than usual. But with rising oestrogen in this phase, it is likely that energy levels will start to pick up again and with your bleed slowing down you may feel like some more vigorous exercise, or taking on physical tasks.

Social connection Bleeding, mood changes, bloating, low energy, and other cycle symptoms in the first days of your flow can make some women feel less social and prefer to stay more solitary. Although you may not feel like being right in the middle of the social mix right now, you might find that you feel more empathetic and thoughtful toward others. This might be a good time for you to connect with family or friends on a one-to-one basis and see how you can support them. As oestrogen rises through the week, it is likely you will start to look forward to social plans so plan ahead for this by responding to invitations and adding social dates to your diary.

Sex and intimacy Bleeding can make women respond to sex in different ways. Increased blood flow to the vaginal region can stimulate nerve endings making arousal common in some women. However, period shame, fear of mess and such can leave other women

LET’S E X AMINE THE TRUTH FOR YOU My Personal Truth

Take a moment to think about some of the happiest moments of your life. What were you doing and who were you with? Now make a list of 20 things that truly make you feel happy.

CONFIDENCE

There is something so empowering about being the only sober person in a room full of people who are drinking.

(For example: reading, singing, spending time outdoors, you name it!)

If alcohol makes us happy, then logic should follow that the more of it we drink, the happier we will become. In your experience, is this true? Think back to that day when you went a little overboard. That day when you became agitated and rude for no apparent reason. That day when you slurred your speech and cringed with embarrassment the next morning. That day that left you feeling seriously ill with the room spinning. Did alcohol make you happy then? Of course not.

But let’s take a few steps back. Let’s

When we think about the possibility of giving up or cutting back on alcohol, our focus tends to go toward the “lack.” We automatically do a mental rundown of the things we believe we’ll be missing out on. We wonder if that wedding, birthday party, or vacation we have coming up will really be as enjoyable without the alcohol. We wonder if we’ll ever be able to kick back and decompress at home without that bottle of wine to go with our favorite Netflix show.

But what if I told you that in sobriety you

The irony is that we now know mercury to be anything but life-enhancing: it is a potentially fatal poison. The first emperor’s determination to live forever might merely have shortened his life thanks to the mercury elixirs he consumed. The ancient Greeks and Romans knew that mercury was poisonous, but the metal was still valued for cosmetics, medicines, and ointments, and it was mined in Europe at great risk to the miners. The mercury mines at Almadén in Spain date back 2,500 years, and are thought to have yielded around 200,000 tones of the element. In the Middle Ages mercury was commonly called quicksilver, a reference to its fluid nature. The Islamic alchemist Jabir ibn Hayyan argued that it was one of the two fundamental constituents of all metals, the other being sulfur. His idea was that all metals contain these two “principles” in different proportions, with those proportions being

most perfect in gold. In this view, the alchemical belief that metals could be transmuted one into another made sense: it was just a question of adjusting the proportions. This special relationship of mercury to gold seemed supported by the fact that mercury is able to dissolve the yellow metal, forming a mixture called an amalgam. It might seem alarming to see gold vanish this way, but it can be recovered by heating the liquid mixture so that the mercury evaporates (don’t breathe in the fumes!). This provided a way to purify gold, and was also used for gilding by spreading the amalgam on a surface and driving off the mercury. But experimenting with mercury could take its toll. Hair from Isaac Newton’s remains revealed high levels of mercury, probably because he was a keen alchemist himself. Some think that the brain disorders, such as amnesia, depression, and paranoia, that Newton reportedly suffered in the 1690s could have arisen from mercury poisoning. The traditional use of mercury in the process of turning fur into felt for making hats has linked that industry to mental illnesses, as captured in the phrase “mad as a hatter.” And yet, mercury really could be a medicine too. In the form of the compound mercury chloride (called calomel) that was used since the late fifteenth century to treat the sexually transmitted disease syphilis, widely thought to have been brought to Europe by explorers to the New World. It’s one of those medicines that works by being more poisonous to the invading organism (in this case, a bacterium) than to the person—the “mercury cure” was unpleasant, but the symptoms of the disease were worse. High mercury levels found in the remains of famous folk, rose suspicions that they were syphilitic— especially if there were signs of madness, suspected of being caused by mercury treatment. That’s probably true of the Scottish poet Robert Burns, and maybe of the

above: An alchemical experiment illustrated in an Arabic text by Jabir ibn Hayyan, one of the most influential early chemists of the Islamic “golden age” in the late 8th and early 9th centuries. Jabir is credited with the idea that all metals are composed of two basic principles, combined in different quantities: sulfur and mercury.

German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. Alluding to the association of the Roman goddess Venus with love, one popular saying during the Renaissance warned: “One night with Venus, a lifetime with Mercury.” Mercury is so dense because the atoms of this element are massive. It is the only metal with a melting point low enough to make it liquid under normal temperatures (Gallium will melt too on a hot summer’s day).

But it doesn’t wet a finger dipped into the silvery liquid because its surface tension is so large, making the liquid retract into drops. It’s actually the large mass of mercury atoms that gives it such a low melting point. Thanks to the effects of special relativity—the theory deduced by Albert Einstein in 1905—the tug of the massive atomic nuclei weakens the chemical bonds between mercury atoms so that they may be easily separated.

CHEMISTRY’S GOLDEN AGE

Deciding who first discovered an element can be tricky. Is it the first person who saw or separated the pure element? Or the first who knew that what they had made was indeed an element, and not just some new variety of another substance?

We’re faced with that question when it comes to hydrogen. Its discovery is usually attributed to the English scientist Henry Cavendish, who made and described hydrogen in 1766. But Cavendish himself believed that what he had found was a particular type of “air.” He wasn’t the first to make hydrogen in any event. Cosmically speaking, hydrogen is everywhere. It’s far and away the most abundant element in the universe: nine out of every ten atoms in the cosmos is a hydrogen atom, and most stars are made predominantly of this element. Because it’s the main ingredient in the clouds of gas, from which stars and planets form, it also dominates the atmospheres of the gas-giant planets such as Saturn and Jupiter, making up 80-96 percent of their gaseous blankets. But there’s hardly any pure hydrogen in Earth’s atmosphere, because it is the lightest of all elements and the planet’s gravity can’t hold onto it. Hydrogen makes up around 13 percent of the atoms in the Earth’s crust and surface, but almost all of that is bound up in chemical compounds, especially water. The usual way to make pure hydrogen is to pull the atoms from water molecules. This is more or less what happens if you dissolve a fairly reactive metal in an acid. The English chemist Robert Boyle performed that reaction in 1671 using hydrochloric acid and iron filings—but others almost certainly did it before him. The hydrogen gas bubbles off—it’s lighter than air—and can be collected. Boyle discovered that this gas is very inflammable, igniting with a pop and creating a bright light. To him and his contemporaries, it was “inflammable air.” So why award the discovery to Cavendish almost a century later? Well, Cavendish was a supremely careful experimenter, who made accurate measurements of his studies with gases and looked closely at their chemical behavior. He was also—even allowing for science’s reputation for accommodating eccentricity—a deeply odd man. The millionaire grandson of a duke, Cavendish, like many wealthy “gentleman philosophers” of his day, carried out his studies privately from a home laboratory, which he built in Clapham in south

oannes Jonstonus was a physician and scientist of Scottish descent, born in Poland, who worked throughout northern Europe – and he was to set the standard for zoological literature for the next hundred years. In the mid-seventeeth century, he embarked upon one of his many great projects: a linked natural history of insects, ‘bloodless’ marine animals, fish, whales and birds. His survey was wide-ranging and detailed, and benefited greatly from the striking contributions of Swiss engraver Matthäus Merian. From a rich Basel family, Merian was not only an artist, but conveniently enough, also owned a publishing house. His engravings are remarkable in their accomplishment, but also their empathy for their subjects, who seem to wriggle and flutter from the page. Especially endearing is the female bat, whose tiny sucklings cling to her, as if to emphasize that bats are biologically very different from birds. Merian died at the age of fifty-six, but his legacy was to prove even greater than his own artistry – his daughter Maria (see page 62) was to become, if anything, even more influential.

The worst excesses of the Burning Times had ended by the beginning of the eighteenth century, but that did not mean witchcraft disappeared entirely from society’s consciousness. On the one hand, the traditions of the craft kept alive by the so-called cunning men and wise women have survived through to the twentieth century. Meanwhile, by the nineteenth century, there had emerged a fascination with the occult and magic in Western society that was to have a profound effect on modern-day witchcraft.

F

WITCHCRAFT

T h e M e D I e vA l W O R l D

The BURNINg TIMes

The Witch Craze Begins There is no one starting date for the witch craze in Europe. From as early as the twelfth century there was a gradual increase in the arrest, trial, and execution of supposed heretics against orthodox Christian teaching. At the same time, it was becoming increasingly accepted among theologians and the pope-inspired inquisitions that witchcraft involved the participant making a pact with the Devil, and thus rejecting God. This made witchcraft one of the most serious heresies. More serious still were the trials of the Knights Templar early in the fourteenth century. The Templars owned land and money, and an envious King Philip of France (Philip the Fair) saw to it that they were tried as heretics. The charges varied, and included sorcery and sodomy and the making of pacts with the Devil. This high-profile case against such a previously renowned order of knights gave credence to the idea that Satanism was real and flourishing. The end of the fourteenth century saw a gradual increase in the number of cases of people accused of using magic combined with worshipping the Devil. In 1390, for example, two women said under torture that they had invoked the Devil as part of their magic rituals.

Continental Europe An important development came in 1398 when the theological faculty of the University of Paris announced that the practice of harmful magic (maleficia) was a heresy if it entailed a pact with the Devil. Since many Christian authorities insisted that invoking any spirits during magic was itself evidence of such a pact, this pronouncement laid witchcraft wide open to charges of heresy.

Machu Picchu One day in July 1911, the mule train of an expedition led by the American explorer Hiram Bingham filed out of the old Inca city of Cuzco in Peru. Bingham was hoping to discover Vilcabamba, the last Inca stronghold to fall to the Spanish Conquistadores. Here, in 1572, the Spanish completed their conquest of an empire which, at its height, had stretched 2,500 miles from Ecuador to Chile. Bingham’s party headed northwest along the valley of the River Urabamba and eventually came into a deep, winding canyon. Snow-topped mountains rose above the clouds; sheer granite cliffs echoed with the roar of the foaming rapids. During a camp stop, Bingham met a local farmer who claimed there were ruins on a nearby mountain called Huayna Picchu. Next day, 24 July, the farmer led the sceptical American up a steep, tree-tangled, snake-infested slope. Near the top, Bingham was amazed to see a flight of stone-faced terraces, hundreds of feet long. Then, suddenly, he came upon the stone walls of Inca houses, overgrown and green with moss and vegetation. Revelation followed revelation: white granite buildings made of blocks higher than a man, ruined temples, plazas, baths, and courtyards left the explorer feeling stunned and asking himself: “Would anyone believe what I had found?”

SACRED PLACES

Hiram Bingham (1875–1956), an American historian and archeologist, rediscovered Machu Picchu in 1911. Bingham had in fact set out to find Vilcabamba, the last city of the Incas to fall to the Spanish Conquistadores. To this end he had organized the Yale Peruvian Expedition, which set out from Cuzco in July 1911. After 5 days, Bingham came upon the jungle-covered ruins of Machu Picchu, and was sure he had found Vilcabamba. Subsequent research, however, suggests that Machu Picchu was not the last Inca stronghold but a small fortified city of around 1,000 inhabitants.

Avebury

The world’s most symbolic natural wonders, ancient cities, and lost lands

In the heart of the English countryside stand the remains of a grand megalithic temple. Who built it and when? What religious rituals were performed there? Did the standing stones form a kind of prehistoric power center?

James Harpur & Jennifer Westwood

Britain’s most important group of neolithic monuments is clustered around the village of Avebury in the undulating landscape of north Wiltshire. Within sight of one another lie the largest prehistoric tomb in England, the highest manmade hill in Europe, and the world’s most extensive henge enclosure. This Avebury complex is situated beside one of the country’s ancient roads, the Ridgeway, which linked the trade routes running from Dorset to the Norfolk flint mines. The scale of the henge at Avebury is breathtaking. One of its earliest investigators, the 17th-century antiquary John Aubrey wrote that it “did as much excel of Stonehenge as a Cathedral does a Parish Church.” Covering 28 acres (11.3 hectares), the henge is formed by a boundary ditch 50ft (15m) deep which runs between two high banks -the outer bank has a perimeter of more than 0.6mi (1km). The henge originally held a large circle of about 100 standing stones—only 27 remain—enclosing two smaller circles represented today by random stones. In the 14th century, Christians wishing to “deconsecrate” what they saw as a pagan temple systematically toppled many stones in and around the henge. More destruction followed in the 17th and 18th centuries when stones were broken into pieces using fire, cold water, and hammers. Many stones were used for building houses, particularly in the village of Avebury which has grown up inside the henge.

Avebury henge and its associated religious sites lie within sight of one another among the undulating downs near Marlborough in the county of Wiltshire, England. The other major neolithic monument in the area—Stonehenge—lies 16mi (26km) to the south, on Salisbury Plain.

DINOSAUR ENCYCLOPEDIA A VIBRANT JOURNEY THROUGH THE EARTH’S OCEANS AND A TIMELY, IMPORTANT TREATISE ON WHAT MUST BE DONE TO SAVE THEM

A tragedy is playing out beneath the surface of the world’s bodies of marine waters, one that began long before the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Although many books have explored the environmental problems being faced on land, Atlas of Oceans is the first one for a general audience that examines how creatures of the marine environment are, if anything, more vulnerable than their land-based counterparts.

JOHN FARNDON

FOREWORD BY CARL SAFINA

Cox • Savage • Gardiner Dixon • Harrison • Palmer

Readers are introduced to the dazzling, diverse array of creatures that inhabit the oceans and seas, and to the nature of the problems they face. Special features focus on the threats to particular animals, plants, and habitats, as well as on specific issues like overfishing, global warming, and pollution. The book also includes success stories, recommendations for what can be done to preserve ocean ecosystems, and a complete rundown of the most endangered species of marine life.

A. guatemala This variety will flower almost throughout the year, given the right conditions.

nthuriums belong to the same family as the philodendrons (see page 106), so it is a reasonable assumption that they will enjoy moist, humid and warm conditions in preference to dry and cold. There are many different anthuriums, but only three that are really suitable for growing in room conditions. These three – A. andraeanum, A. scherzerianum and A. guatemala – have broadly arrow-shaped leaves that are carried on slender stalks. They all have exotic flowers that remain colourful for many weeks, even when used as cut flowers.

The commercial grower raises new plants from seed. However, this requires special skill and conditions and is not often within the scope of the amateur grower with only limited facilities. Only buy anthuriums from a houseplant specialist or reputable garden centre, as these plants are vulnerable and need expert care. Ensure that the leaves on the plant are fresh, unblemished and have lustre. It does not matter if there are no flowers present, except these are the only way you can be sure of the plant’s colouring.

Keep the plant well watered in summer and during the main growing period. Less water is required in winter, but do not allow the soil either to dry out or to become waterlogged as this will cause the plant to wilt.

WAT E R I N G

Give the plant a liquid feed weekly while it is active and reduce the feeding as the growth slows down towards winter. If the plant is dormant in winter, no nourishment is needed.

Anthuriums are not easy plants to grow, and it is vital to maintain the correct temperature and humidity and to shield them from draughts. Provided these conditions are met, and the plant is neither overwatered nor allowed to thirst, it should do well. Rainwater is preferred when possible and may also be sprayed on the leaves. These may also be cleaned occasionally with a soft sponge, but do not handle soft, new leaves.

oth in appearance and habit, fittonias are among the most delicate of all foliage plants. Originating from tropical South America, they produce insignificant dull yellow bracts, their main attraction being colourful, delicately veined foliage. New plants are raised from cuttings taken during the warmer months of the year and placed in

F. verschaffeltii has dark green leaves patterned with delicate silver veins. Healthy plants are bushy – avoid those with curling or dropping leaves.

L I G H T A N D P O S I T I O N This plant is that unusual specimen which actually enjoys a shady position. Although it will grow in reasonable light, it cannot abide direct sun or even too much indirect light. However, it is also damaged by exposure to draughts. T E M P E R AT U R E R A N G E The fittonia must have warm temperatures, a minimum of 18°C (65°F) and preferably surroundings of 21°C (70°F). It will also tolerate higher summer temperatures, but it is then vital to keep up a high level of humidity. The plant appreciates an overhead spray with tepid water in any season.

The soil must be kept moist at all times, although the fittonia will require less water during the winter when it is inactive. To keep up humidity, stand the pot on a tray of damp pebbles, but make sure the base is not actually sitting in water.

Feeding is not essential in this case, but a weak liquid feed with every watering will keep the plant in good condition. Stop feeding it when it is dormant in winter.

FEEDING

If the conditions in which the plant is kept are naturally dry, especially in the summer, create humidity by placing the pot on a tray of damp pebbles and moisten the fittonia with an overhead spray. Otherwise it will simply wilt, but if it does so, it should revive without further harm when watered. Stem tip cuttings can be taken in spring and must be raised in a temperature of 23°C (75°F).

SEASONAL CARE

This plant prefers a small, shallow pot and potting on is seldom required more often than every other year. Use a potting compost with a good proportion of peat and repot during the summer months.

Growing Root Vegetables The term ‘root crops’ covers a wealth of vegetables. Included here are beetroot, carrots, parsnips, salsify and scorzonera, spinach beet, seakale beet, swedes (rutabagas), turnips and sweet potatoes. Swedes and turnips are, strictly speaking, members of the brassica group, but their growing habits and requirements mean that they are often grouped with root vegetables. Sweet potatoes are also not true root crops; and, despite their name, they are only very distantly related to the common potato, with quite different cultivation requirements,

so they are rarely grown together. They are actually an herbaceous perennial vine, although they are grown from tubers or ‘slips’, pieces of the tuber that will produce roots and new plants. Beetroot, is most frequently thought of as a salad vegetable, cooked and then eaten cold, or pickled, but it is also delicious eaten hot or in soup and can be grated and eaten raw (the young ones are the most palatable). There are many different-shaped varieties, but also some that are golden in colour. carrots come in myriad shapes from round, or finger-shaped, to conical, or elongated – far more interesting than the supermarket variety. Like most roots, they store well (see page 207), so can generally be eaten fresh all the year round. Their cooking possibilities are

GROWING TIMES AND HARVESTING MONTHS Continuous crops of roots can be produced in the garden by regular sowings and experimenting with the various early- and late-maturing varieties. Many root crops are sown in two main stages: one planned to give the early, small, sweet crops, with a heavier sowing to follow, giving the main crop through the winter.

endless, even as a sweetener in some puddings and they make a deliciously moist cake. parsnips, too, have more uses than just as a side vegetable. They are one of the most common ingredients of home-made wine. Varieties bred to yield small roots are very useful for people who have only a small amount of land to devote to vegetable production. Try something different Salsify and scorzonera are two unusual root vegetables which are well worth growing for the tasty interest they can give to family meals. Both produce long, thin roots; salsify looks a little like an elongated parsnip, while scorzonera is similar in shape but has a black skin. They take up quite a lot of land for a good six months or more, but if you have space for them in your overall vegetable garden plan, they make an interesting change on the table. Seakale beet and spinach beet are perhaps a little more unusual too. Although they are both root crops, they are grown for their leaves rather than their roots. Seakale beet is a form of spinach beet, with wider leaf stalks and midribs. Its leaves have a dual purpose; the green leafy part may be torn from the stem to be cooked and eaten as greens, and the white midrib can then be cooked and served on its own. Spinach beet is often known as perpetual spinach and is the easiest of all spinaches to grow, having a higher yield and a greater tolerance to dry conditions. It also has a less acidic taste than true spinach. As its Beetroot is a rich source of vitamin B, when eaten raw – grate it into salads to make the most of its goodness. The roots store well in a cool place or can be pickled, whole or sliced.

Look out, too, for cutworms (page 147) and downy mildew (page 146). radishes, which are brassicas, will be subject to the brassica diseases (see page 65); flea beetle is the worst. Do not grow radishes in ground infected with club root. Growing Tomatoes The many hybrid varieties of tomatoes available today have made it possible to grow tomatoes outdoors successfully in many areas. Failing this, a good-sized crop can often be produced on a small paved area, on a windowsill or in a garden room or conservatory. The varieties of tomatoes are endless, from round ones of all sizes – those that are scarcely bigger than a sugar lump to those that are almost too big to hold in the hand – to plum- or pear-shaped ones that may be yellow, striped green and red, or yellow and red. The most usual way of growing tomatoes outdoors is on a singlestemmed plant known as a cordon, but there are also bush and dwarf varieties, the latter growing to a height of no more that 15cm (6in) but sprawling extensively over the

ground. Dwarf varieties can also be successfully grown in hanging baskets, where they will drape over the edges and there are vareities specifically bred for this situation. Soil and position For tomatoes, the ground should be well-cultivated and well-drained soil, into which well-rotted organic matter (leafmould is ideal) has been incorporated the previous autumn. If the ground is freshly manured just before planting tomatoes, the plants will be very leafy but bear few fruits. Tomatoes will grow well in potting composts and growing bags, although they will need regular liquid feeding in the later stages of growth. Sunshine is the main requisite for a good crop of juicy tomatoes, so choose the sunniest spot you can. South-facing walls or fences make the best sites, because they also act as windbreaks. Tomatoes grown outdoors usually have better flavour than indoor fruits. Choose from the many outdoor varieties available.

sowinG and plantinG tomatoes can be grown successfully from seed and there are many dozens of varieties to choose from. Make sure you buy an outdoor variety if you do not intend to grow them in a greenhouse. Sow tomatoes in boxes or pots filled with seed compost in early spring. Sow seeds 2.5cm (1in) apart or two seeds to each 7.5cm (3in) pot. Damp the compost well and cover with newspaper until the seed has germinated. Put the containers in a warm, darkened place and, as soon as the seedlings emerge, remove the newspaper and move the containers to a warm, south-facing windowsill in full sunlight. When the first leaves appear, transplant strong seedlings from boxes to individual pots filled with potting compost, or just remove the weaker seedling of the two if they were sown in individual pots. From mid-April, begin to harden off the plants by putting them in
