Colour & Print Reproduction Disclaimer: The Gold Coast Bulletin does not guarantee colour matching or ink density on digital (screen) proofs or hard-copy colour proofs. Because of differences in equipment, paper, inks, and other conditions between colour proofing and production pressroom operations, a reasonable variation in colour between colour proofs and the completed job is to be expected. When variation of this kind occurs, it will be considered acceptable performance. You must provide high-resolution images suited to the web printing process. The Gold Coast Bulletin is not liable for images printing pixelated when this is caused by customers providing low-resolution images. The Gold Coast Bulletin is not responsible for any colour shift that occurs in conversions from RGB to CMYK colour modes. Gold Coast Publications print to PANPA Specifications which have been developed by PANPA’S Technical Advisory Group (TAG). The Technical Advisory Group consists of representatives from member newspaper publishing companies with technical backgrounds and expertise in pre-press, and press processes. The complete technical print and reproduction specifications can be found at: http://www.panpa.org.au/

RESIZING IMAGE & RESOLUTION Open file in Adobe Photoshop Select Image\Image Size Change the resolution to the desired level and as pixels/inch (make sure Resample Image is unselected) Images should be scaled to the actual size they are to be used at with a resolution of 180 pixels per inch. Single bit line art images such as logos should be a resolution of 600 pixels per inch
Make sure the 3 panels are linked
Check that Constrain Proportions is ticked Unselect Resample Image Tick the Resample Image box to adjust the width. The height will automatically change to preserve the proportion of the image Adjust the size of your image so that it comes close to what you actually require when imported into a layout program (eg. Indesign) Try to avoid reducing or enlarging the image in a layout program more/less than 70% reduction & 120% enlargement (8)
Heading Photoshop BASIC ENHANCING STEP 1 Open file in Adobe Photoshop and load Gold Coast Bulletin CMYK colour settings. Enhancing an image usually works best in RGB mode only convert to CMYK when finished. When working in RGB, taking out a particular colour affects the other 2 colours, so only small adjustments are necessary. Taking out a particular colour in CMYK will only take out that colour and not affect any of the other 3. R = Cyan G = Magenta B = Yellow Before starting select Image\Mode\RGB then turn on your CMYK preview (Ctrl+Y). This will show how your image will look once converted.
STEP 2 – NEUTRAL POINT & TONES With any image, look at it tonally first. Don't worry about colours just yet. Work with Curves over Levels. Use the mask tool to lighten the darker areas in the quarter tone part of the curve (lighter end). Push any lighter areas through the mid-tones of your curve. Find a neutral/focal point to help control ink weight and tone throughout image. Neutralising cuts enhancing in half as you have worked the image globally. With your eye dropper, find the lightest neutral colour eg. white/light grey or a colour which is fairly neutral in tone. Select individual levels and change highlights (lower quadrant) and shadows (higher quadrant) to bring ink weights to the same level/tone. The CMY reading in the info palette should read be similar eg. 4/4/4
Click here to reverse direction of highlights
STEP 3 – COLOURS Once you’ve achieved tones, punch in colour where needed e.g. sky, grass and faces. When working in RGB, remember, taking out a colour affects the other 2 colours i.e. removing Cyan (R) turns the image red, removing Magenta (G) turns the image yellow., so only small adjustments are necessary. Use the mask tool to select similar tonal areas. Perform an “S” curve in Curves to drag the highlights out slightly and push a touch into the shadows. If you don’t choose similar tonal areas and select light areas with dark you are making the shadows darker and possibly burning the highlights out more. Use Selective Colour (Image/Adjust/Selective Colour) to make colours brighter e.g. to remove red from sky, add yellow to grass. Black areas should remain black, try and show highlights if possible. Use Levels to see if you need to input more highlights or lowlights on the curves. Always aim for a hill shape in the midtone section. Note: Working on skin tones are different. Still enhance in RGB. Use the above instructions, however you will need to work on faces separately and take out as much cyan as possible. Have the yellow reading above the magenta by 7-10% depending on how dark the image is.
NOTE: In most instances the image will have a cyan cast through it
MIDTONE Click here to reverse direction of highlights
(9)
Heading Photoshop STEP 4 – SHARPEN NOTE: Adjust the size of your image so that it comes close to what you actually require when imported into a layout program (eg. Indesign). Try to avoid reducing or enlarging the image in a layout program more/less than 70% reduction & 120% enlargement.
Always sharpen the image at 100% Select Filter\Sharpen\Unsharp Mask Sharpen the image until it nearly breaks up (between 0.5-0.7 radius and 150-400%). We have a 20% dot gain meaning the image will flatten off so the affect won’t be quite as harsh.
1
STEP 5 – FINAL Convert your image to CMYK by selecting Image\Mode\CMYK. Upon conversion the ink weight will be set to no more than 230%, if the correct curve is loaded. To check select Total Ink in your Info Palette Options. With your eye dropper sample the darkest colour on your image. The total should read no more than 230% Do not work on the image any more as it could push the ink weight over the limit!
