“I’ve survived one of my biggest fears”

Dear Readers,

Editor’s Letter

When we are young our fears are small figments that go away over time.Growing up I use to think that fear was something that could stop me .With progression of time ,I realized that fear didn’t really exist. After facing one of my biggest fears which was losing my parents I found out that the only thing that could stop me was myself. The fear of a life without my parents had me think I wasn’t ready to live without them.I fear what kind of person I would be without their guidance. Now living my life with them gone, I’ve learned that fear wasn’t something that could stop me unless I allowed the figment of it to.We all have what we believe are our fears but it’s up to us to know the strength placed in us that helps us overcome what we think will stop us.

MakeUpByMika Even the most successful people in their career have fears when it comes to just starting. In the beginning of her makeup career, she was extremely nervous.Questions like , How will people receive this? Will people be happy about my endeavor? Will they think I’m a good artist? Will my clients be satisfied? What if they don’t really like it and think I suck? Hat constantly ran through her mind. She would sometimes hesitate posting her work or even promoting herself. All of this because she feared failure. I was scared to try my best and still fail. It wasn’t until she had an in-depth conversation with my beloved parents about where she wanted to go in life that made me fearless. That day forever changed her life and my perspective because she received many valuable pieces of advice that really resonated with me. One of them being, “To never try at all would be true failure; Constructing the plan and executing is true success in itself, regardless of the outcome.”

12

That piece of advice made her understand that there was nothing that she should fear about failure because she was already successful in a sense .The fact that she sat down and put her mind to becoming a makeup artist was already a small win because she found her purpose. She knew that she wanted to make people feel better with her talents and really connect with people by doing what she knew best. She could no longer let my fears of failing cripple me. After that specific conversation, She changed her whole business strategy by tapping into her 1000% commit level, a level that was unreachable before due to her fears. She quit her full time job soon after, in that same year, and haven’t worked a full time job since. In the end, she so grateful that she didn’t let her fears overpower her because if so,she wouldn’t be half of the person I am today.

Giana De Dier Visual Artist

Dier’s artwork has mainly been focused around the topic of identity and mixed media as a medium for the last 5 years. She been focusing specifically on deconstructing and reconstructing images through collage for the last 6 months. She worked collage before but not with this intensity. She’s inspired by black people and cultural manifestations throughout the African Diaspora. She’s inspired by our resilience and how we adapt and create. I´m always looking at how people reinvent themselves through artistic expressions. Her artwork currently focuses in deconstructing the images we see of black women in the media and in magazines and reframing how we see each other and how we are seen as black women. The artwork also shows a diversity that is not commonly found in print or TV. in Panama, although it is very common throughout the country. In a way, these are a commentary on beauty standards and how we need to re-think how we see and present the black female body. Also being aware that there is no one way of being and how multi-faceted we are as people. Social media: @gianadedierstudio on Instagram and Facebook
