MERRI CREEK ALGORITHMIC DESIGN

2014 FEDERATION SQAURE KIDS PLAYGROUND

QUEEN VICTORIA MARKET, OPENSPACE QVM IS THE LARGEST OPEN AIR MARKET IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE. THE DESIGN AIMS TO SHAPE THE EXISTING CARPARK SPACE INTO A MULTIFUNCTIONAL OPEN SPACE. ACCORDING TO THE URBAN DEVELOPING PLAN, THE DESIGN INTEGRATES OUTDOOR MARKET, HISTORIC PARK, SKATE PARK, KIDS PLAYGROUND AND SEASONAL BOTANICAL GARDEN INTO A WHOLE. THE LAYOUT OF EACH FUNCTIONAL SECTION CONCERNS THE FACTORS AS TERRAIN, SURROUNDING PROPERTIES, TRANPORTATION, ETC. TOOLS: Rhino; Vray; photoshop; illustrator

EVOLUTION

MARIBYRNONG, DEPARTMENT OF DEFENCE

THE DOD SITE IS SITUATED IN THE SUBURB ON MARIBYRNONG, BORDERS THE MARIBYRNONG RIVER TO THE NORTH, EAST AND WEST, AND CORDITE AVENUE TO THE SOUTH. THE SITE HAS BEEN PREVIOUSLY USED FOR DEFENCE DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES, BUT HAS BEEN SUBSTANTIALLY VACANT FOR APPROXIMATELY 10 YEARS. THE SITE PLAN FOCUS ON PROVIDING ENOUGH RESIDENTIAL TO CATER FOR THE GROWING POPULATION AND HIGHLIGHTE THE SITE SPECIFIC MILITARY HISTORY. AT THE MEANWHILE, THE RIVERFRONT NATURE IS CELEBRATED. Tools: AutoCad; Sketchup; ArcGis; Photoshop

MERRI CREEK, SOUND CLOUD OUR PROJECCT THE ‘SOUND CLOUD’ IS LOCATED ON THE MERRI CREEK TRAIL, IT IS AN INTERACTIVE INSTALLATION WHICH FOCUSES AND TRANSMITS SOUND IN AN ATTEMPT TO ENCOURAGE USERS TO EXPERIENCE THE TRUE NATURE OF THE SITE. THE DIGITAL MODLE WAS DESIGNED BY GRASSHOPPER AND RHINO. THE PHYSICAL MODEL WAS FABRICATED FROM THE LASER CUTTED PANELS . SOUND CLOUD IS A TEAMWORK RESULT, IN EVERY PHASE OF DESIGNING, GROUP MEMBERS MEET TO DISCUSS THE PLAN AND DETAILES. AFTER WE PRESENTED THE FIRST MODEL TO GUESTS AND TUTORS, WE IMPROVE THE TIGHTNESS OF THE FRAME. THIS DESIGN IS OUR FIRST ALGORITHMIC ATTAMPT WHICH LEAD US TO A NEW THINKING AND DEVELOPING WAY.

TOOLS: Rhino; grasshopper; lazer cut; photoshop

SOUND CLOUD

DESIGN CONCEPT

Our chosen site located along the Merri Creek Trail is unlike any other within central urban Melbourne. It is surrounded by dense development on all sides and yet when interacting with the space it was remarkably peaceful and this ambiance had the effect of removing the visitor from any sense of the close proximity of the urban context. As population and development increases in central Melbourne, these sort of calm, natural landscape pockets will only become scarcer and more valued. However, despite its beauty and tranquillity, it was observed that most people using the space were either walking, running or cycling along the man made trail, without deviating from the path. As a result, users were also avoiding engaging with the creek itself, the defining feature of this natural setting. Yet, once the creek was approached by diverting from the path, and particularly at the chosen site, where there are some small rapids, the sounds of water flowing over rocks was the most special and engaging aspect. Within the urban context the sound of running water is a rarity and carries with it a soothing and meditative quality.

CONCEPTUALISATION

IN CONVERGING THREE DIMENSIONAL GEOMETRIES WE FOUND THE PAVILION FOR ONE SUMMER DEMONSTRATES THE ORGANIC NATURE OF TESSELLATION. ADDITIONALLY WHAT IS INNOVATIVE ABOUT THIS PROJECT IS ITS ABILITY TO CREATE DOUBLE CURVED COMPLEX FORMS FROM PLANAR, PREFABRICATED ELEMENTS THROUGH THE USE OF COMPUTATIONAL DESIGN. THIS INSTALLATION OF THREE GIANT WOODEN MEGAPHONES IN A FOREST CLEARING IN ESTONIA WAS INTERESTING IN THAT IT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO HAVE SITE USERS RECONSIDER A NATURAL AREA AS A SPACE OF MEDITATION, RELAXATION AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT. CONSTRUCTED OF ALUMINIUM LASER CUT CONES THE SHADOW PAVILION INTERACTS WITH THE SURROUNDING NATURE THROUGH FOCUSING SOUND AND LIGHT. WE DREW INSPIRATION FROM THIS PROJECTS USE OF MATERIALITY TO HOMOGENIZE WITH THE SITE.

PRECEDENTS

SOUND WAVES, FROM SUCH SOURCES AS RUNNING WATER, WIND AND WILDLIFE SPREAD OUT IN A SPHERICAL PATTERN. BY PLACING A CONE OVER THE SOURCE, THE WAVES ARE REDIRECTED INTO A MUCH MORE FOCUSED AREA, THUS INCREASING THE INTENSITY IN THAT AREA AT THE EXPENSE OF THE INTENSITY ELSEWHERE. THIS IS TRUE WITH BOTH COLLECTING AND EMITTING NOISE.

TO CONSTRUCT OUR PROJECT WE BEGAN WITH APPLYING CONE GEOMETRIES TO A DOMED BASE SURFACE. THE CONES WERE TRIMMED ALONG THEIR INTERSECTION JOINTS AND TOPS TO CREATE HOLES. ALONG THE INTERSECTIONS, CURVES WERE EXTRUDED IN PARABOLIC FASHION TO CREATE THE SPIKED FRAMING SYSTEM. CONCEPTUALISATION 27

TECNIQUE • Water flow • Wind • Bird singing

The sound wave of water, wind and bird spread out in a spherical pattern, by placing a cone over the source, the waves are redirected into a much more focused area, thus increasing the intensity in that area at the expense of the intensity elsewhere.

With the idea of implementing cones to focus noise Prototype A was an exploration in joints and methods of connecting an array of geometries. From this we concluded that a structural framing system could not efficiently enclose an area of geometries that was sound proof. Prototype B explored methods of fabrication, particularly in creating overlapping double curved geometries from planar, laser cut materials.

CONCEPTUALISATION

TECTONIC ELEMENTS & PROTOTYPES

Opaque polypropylene was laser cut to produce unrolled cone surfaces which were connected with rivets through holes placed along the straight edged extremities. As each cone geometry overlapped along a concaved curve, when unrolled these intersections were inversely represented as convex curves. Therefore holes were placed along these convex curves and cable ties joined the cone geometries. Next the laser cut Luan plywood frames were connected in the same hole and cable tie system along corresponding edges and rested upon the cone structure.

TEST THE MODEL ON THE SITE

THE MODLE TURNS OUT WORKING WELL AT THE SITE, THE TUBES COLLECT THE WATER FLOW SOUND AND WIND SOUND BY STRECHING OUT FROM THE CONES. THE FRAME IS HOWEVER LOOSE AND USELESS, WE NEED TO MODIFIE THIS PART AT NEXT STAGE. THE PIPE DIAMETER IS TOO BIG AS IT WAS HARD TO SET IT INTO THE HOLE OF THE CONE. 30
