Special notes regarding courses APSC 142 The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering has responsibility for one course in the common first-year program of the Faculty of Applied Science. APSC 142 Personal Computers in Engineering: provides students with practical experience in the use of spreadsheet software such as Excel in the analysis of data (e.g., tabulating numerical results from experiments, generating graphs, performing regression, etc.); also provides experience with symbolic analysis such as that in Maple and/or Matlab for common applications related to calculus, finding roots of equations, and elementary linear algebra; every week, students attend a two-hour laboratory session in order to acquire experience in the use of these tools. Given the large enrolment in first-year courses, and given that the course of interest has laboratory portions, the Department is provided with resources for a larger number of teaching assistants in this first-year course. It is therefore suggested that graduate students applying for teaching assistantships consider including the course described below in their set of preferences. The background or expertise needed to serve as a teaching assistant for the course should not present any significant challenges for most graduate students in Electrical and Computer Engineering, and the major contribution would be related to providing assistance in the laboratory. There may also be some other duties such as marking of examinations. It is certainly not expected that all applicants consider including in their list of preferences. The intent of this information is merely to encourage a sufficient number to do so in order to provide the Department with flexibility in performing the overall assignment of teaching assistantships. Should it be necessary, the Department may simply have to assign an appropriate number of teaching assistants in order to meet the personnel requirements for the course within the available resources, notwithstanding the preferences indicated by applicants on the attached form (see note 1 and note 2 on the last page).
