FOOTBALL GAME DAY 2021

FEATURE STORY:

100 YEARS OF QUEEN’S FOOTBALL AT RICHARDSON STADIUM BY: BEN FISHER When the Gaels kick off on Friday night against Guelph at Richardson Stadium, it will not only mark week four of the 2021 season, but the 100th anniversary of Queen’s Football at Richardson Stadium. The first game ever at Richardson Stadium was played 100 years ago, a 9-5 win over Toronto on Oct. 8, 1921, played in front of 3,500 fans. Bill Campbell scored the first touchdown at the stadium. The original Richardson Stadium was located on what is now Tindall Field and Mackintosh-Corry Hall on Queen’s campus, and was a gift of James Armstrong Richardson, Queen’s Chancellor from 1929 to 1939. The stadium is named after Richardson’s brother, George Taylor Richardson (BSc 1909), who was a prominent athlete at Queen’s in both football and hockey. George Richardson was killed in combat on February 10, 1916 in France during the First World War. The original Richardson Stadium was also host to Queen’s victory in the 10th Grey Cup, their first of three straight Grey Cup wins, on Dec. 12, 1922. Led by Canadian Football Hall of Famers Harry “Red” Batsone and Frank “Pep” Leadley, Queen’s defeated Edmonton 13-1 in front of 4,700 fans. Eighteen Yates Cup winning teams and one Vanier Cup winning team called Richardson Stadium home over 50 seasons from 1921-1970. Richardson Stadium moved to its current location on West Campus in 1971, with much of the new stadium constructed using pieces of the original stadium, including the upper portion of the east bleachers. The new stadium had seating for more than 10,000 fans. Queen’s teams that played in the new Richardson Stadium have added another four Yates Cups, seven Dunsmore Cups, and three Vanier Cups. The most recent championship

9

came in 2009, when Queen’s went 7-1 in the regular season, including a perfect 4-0 at home, and captured the Yates Cup and Mitchell Bowl at home before winning the program’s fourth Vanier Cup at Laval. Richardson Stadium was revitalized in 2016, thanks to the generous support of Kim (Artsci’76) and Stu Lang (Sc’74), who pledged $10 million, the Richardson Foundation, who pledged, $5 million, and other donors who brought the total amount raised to more than $17 million. The revitalization brought to Richardson Stadium artificial turf field, a state-of-the-art scoreboard, and bowl-seating. Moving forward, a new pavilion will be constructed behind the north end zone to complete Richardson Stadium. Queen’s announced earlier this year more than 300 donors contributed more than $11 million, with the lead gift coming from Stu and Kim Lang, to construct the pavilion by the spring of 2023. Richardson Stadium has been an iconic venue of Queen’s University and the Kingston community for the past 100 years, and with the scheduled completion of the new pavilion, will continue to be a point of pride for studentathletes, students, coaches, spectators, and community members for years to come.

TUCKER TAKES HOME WEEK 3 HONOURS

Running Back named CFP OUA Offensive Player of the Week By: Ben Fisher

Queen’s Football’s Rasheed Tucker was been named the Canadian Football Perspective’s OUA Offensive Player of the Week for Week 3. Tucker (Ajax, Ont.) helped lead the Queen’s effort on offence in their 35-11 win over the Toronto Varsity Blues Saturday. The Second Team OUA All-Star in 2019 finished with a game-high 194 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Tucker leads the OUA in rushing with 55 carries for 418 yards (7.6 yards per carry average). That mark also leads U SPORTS rushers in both total yardage and yards per game. Tucker joined Guelph Gryphons linebacker A.J. Allen (Defensive) and Ottawa Gee-Gees kicker Campbell Fair (Special Teams) as Canadian Football Perspective’s OUA Players of the Week for Week 3. Earlier this year, the fourth-year was named to the 2021 U SPORTS East-West Bowl roster after being named an OUA Second-Team All-Star in 2019. In 2018, Tucker was named to the OUA All-Rookie Team and took home the Royal Todd Trophy as Queen’s Football’s top rookie.

MOSLEY HELPS AUTISM MENTORSHIP PROGRAM CONTINUE THROUGH COVID-19 PANDEMIC By Ben Fisher

Queen’s Football student-athlete Josh Mosley has been part of the Autism Mentorship Program (A.M.P.) since his second year at the University. The A.M.P. is a way for student-athletes at Queen’s to build mentor relationships with people with autism spectrum disorder through a variety of events and Queen’s Gaels games. The COVID-19 pandemic, which cancelled the 2020 OUA and U SPORTS seasons, didn’t stop members of the A.M.P. from connecting. “Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, A.M.P. has shifted its focus away from in-person events and pairings and toward making our services accessible on an online platform,” Mosley said. “With the help of Queen’s student-athletes, A.M.P. was able to produce and make available 30 videos demonstrating a skill, drill, or exercise pertinent to their sport or athletics in general.” The videos are part of a Learn to Play initiative with the A.M.P., where Queen’s student-athletes aim to cultivate a love of sports and active lifestyle. “The Learn to Play initiative was originally conceived of as a way to connect Queen’s sports teams with youth in the community on the autism spectrum. Prior to the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, A.M.P. was able to host our first Learn to Play sports day in-person at the ARC with members of the football team. “Once COVID-19 hit, we had the idea of shifting the same concept to an online platform with hopes of reaching a wider audience and making available the videos for future use in classrooms. We are extremely proud of the videos that have been released and hope to continue this initiative in the future, whether it be in-person or virtually.” Now the leader of the program, Mosley (Port Colborne, Ont.) said he first signed up when the program’s founder approached him. “I first became involved with the A.M.P. in my second year at Queen’s through former Gaels Football player and A.M.P. founder, Emilio Frometa. Emilio was someone that I gravitated toward in my first couple of years at Queen’s because I knew him as a great student-athlete and leader in the Queen’s community. When Emilio asked me to become involved as a mentor and member of the executive team, I knew it was the right choice for me.”

“Being a mentor has helped me to understand the ways in which people’s perceptions of the world around them may vary radically and that one way or another is not necessarily correct, but just different. Building a closer bond with my mentee and having a better understanding of how we each learn and navigate the world has been invaluable to me in my development as a mentor and teacher.” Mosley, an offensive lineman, is entering his fifth season with the Queen’s Varsity Football team. He said he wants to continue his work with the program in the future, while making sure Queen’s involvement remains strong. “My future plans include leaving A.M.P. in the hands of a younger football player and continue to look for avenues for growth throughout Ontario.” But he’s back with the Gaels for one more season, and while things aren’t totally back to normal, Queen’s will be hosting a limited number of fans this year. Mosley said he can’t wait. “I am so excited to have students back in the stands and it will be especially great to have members of A.M.P. and their families in the stands watching many of the athletes who have given their time to the program.”

Mosley said leading the organization has been both rewarding and inspiring, and he’s learned a lot from the ongoing experience as well.
