FROM THE EDITOR Tawana Blassingame Founder & Editor in Chief
Welcome to the August 2017 issue of Queen Size Magazine. It is no secret that I am not a fan of summer, but what I am a fan of is all the cute swimsuits that have hit the market; can you say CUTE!!! This is a huge change from what we used to see. The swimwear that we are seeing now have give us back the confidence to hit the beach and pools without having to wear t-shirts and jean shorts. That’s who this issue is dedicated to; all the designers that are making them, boutiques and stores that are carrying them, and all my thick chicks that are wearing them. In my previous note to you all I said that I was going to wearing be getting me a swimsuit, and guess what? I surely did; and I got one in hot pink!!! Watch out for me and when you see me say HEY!!!! Enjoy the summer ladies and gents because it goes by quick… lol Every issue I have to give thanks to everyone that continues to support us. We appreciate you more than words can say. We would love to hear your feedback. Email us at queensizemagazine@gmail. com and let us know what you like, don’t like and/or want to see in future issues. We value your opinion.

ARE YOU LETTING YOUR VAGINA AIR OUT?
WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|AUGUST 2017 ISSUE
ARE YOU LETTING YOUR VAGINA AIR OUT | QSM
Do you sleep with panties or without? Hopefully I will win some brownie points with the significant others out there for this one. Maybe I can save some relationships or perhaps even help make some babies (just name your firstborn after me and we are even). I had a friend tell me once that she refuses to sleep without underwear because if someone break into her house she doesn’t want to allow them easy access. Ummm ok. I guess. Other than making your significant other happy at night, there are health reasons why you should. So allow me this opportunity to talk you out of your panties when you go to bed. For me personally, I wear underwear all day long and the first thing I can’t wait to do when I get home is take them off. Not because they are uncomfortable, but because I want to free my body parts; especially in the summer. The last thing I want to do is shower and then put underwear back on. Needless to say, I am one of those women that sleep commando. Dr. Alyssa Dweck is the co-author of V is for Vagina. In her book she talks about her reasons why she recommends sleeping with no panties at night. “When a woman’s private parts are covered up all day by confining clothing and no breathable fabrics, including sweaty workout clothes or sanitary pads, it can cause vaginal irritation and moisture to collect in this area, providing a perfect breeding ground for yeast or bacterial infections.” Allowing your vagina to get some air helps to keep it dry and clean. Now of course there are some exceptions here, like if it’s that time of the month, you may not want to use this time to exercise your right to go commando. Or if you already have a vaginal infection and need to use medications. For the women, like my friend who is afraid or uncomfortable, pull out those granny panties or throw on a pair of loose fitting cotton boxers. And just as an FYI, think breathable materials; silk and lace underwear are horrible choices because they are not breathable materials. I know what you are thinking; lace, wholes, air gets through. No, it doesn’t work that way. Now, sleeping without panties doesn’t necessarily mean sleeping naked (although most of the time I do). The objective here is to let your vagina breathe and avoid becoming a breeding ground for bacteria to grow.

COURTNEY K. PENNINGTON LICENSED MASSAGE THERAPIST & REIKI MASTER PRACTITIONER. PRACTICING SINCE 2011. HELPING PEOPLE HEAL THEMSELVES FROM THE INSIDE OUT THROUGH REIKI ENERGY WORK AND WITH POSITIVE TOUCH, THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE, USING MODES, SUCH AS MYO-FASCIAL RELEASE, SWEDISH, & THAI MASSAGE.
Massage therapy changed my life in 2011. Having the ability to facilitate healing in another person is extremely gratifying for me. My intent is helping each person that comes to me, heal themselves. My services are focused around the client. When a person comes to me, I like to evaluate and approach each session based on what they are feeling or what they would like the focus or outcome of the massage to be. With that in mind, I listen to the muscle tissue, and build a plan for them individually. Building a relationship with a client is even better for me as a therapist because I really get to see the muscle tissue and structure transform. With regular bodywork, you really can become a whole new person. I love being a part of helping people heal and de-stress. I began practicing massage therapy in 2011; I have continued my education, staying certified, and licensed. During this expansion, I became a Reiki Practitioner in 2012 and a Reiki Master/Teacher in 2014. My life’s focus has been on Massage & Reiki, and building my practice. (Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing.) My ultimate goal is to open a wellness center, granting me the ability to have a greater outreach, networking with other Therapist, Healers, & Health Care Professionals; promoting healing widespread, and encouraging others to heal themselves. Born and raised on the tropical island of St. Croix USVI, she naturally brings an appeal. Professionally trained at the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York City, Charon has spent years traveling the globe learning and experimenting with different design elements. Her styles reflect her global journeys and are designed for the real women of the world! Charon’s diversified creativity has landed her positions at some of the most recognizable apparel companies in the business and her design style has been merchandised on some of the most WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|AUGUST 2017 ISSUE

coveted retail floors in the United States. These days Charon is lending her creativity and passion to her own collection, G’wan by Charon. She designs beautiful, versatile clothing & accessories to bring out the confident women in us all. Her ardent appreciation for a hint of vintage underlines her designs. Charon also continues to create lines of fashion that make women of all sizes feel empowered and self-confident!
Charon Richardson the founder and director of the Queenaration. Her story has many chapters of pain, abuse, struggle, and insecurity. Her life story reads like an epic adventure filled with learning, growing and stretching moments. From her life’s experiences, she has unearthed her divine life’s purpose. She discovered the power that lies within her and recovered her authentic self. With her “Rise and Reign philosophy, she pours into women around the world the importance of honoring the Queen that lives within them. Her groundbreaking approach to teaching has liberated women to embrace their feminine power and start a journey of self-love. The Queenaration is more than a women empowerment movement of women that share their stories and life journey; it is a sisterhood. It is a safe place to release, inspire, and build each other up. When women stand together mountains can move and that is what the Queenaration aims to do in the lives of all queens who make space for it.
In her quest to liberate women, Charon has created Whorish Beauty. A cosmetic company that offers liquid lipstick and will be branching out to include other products. As a growing girl, she was told by others how she should show up in this world. She was told that wearing makeup was whorish. Wearing red was whorish. Wearing pants was whorish. You see living in her full femininity wasn't a good thing. Showing up in the world in her womanly power was frowned upon. Charon wants to empower women to embrace themselves exactly as they are, releasing them from the ole wise tales that was poured into them. #IAmAWhorishBeauty

QSM: Can you share with us what got you into modeling and how long have you been in the game? Leslie: Most recently for about 4 years. I started in Pin Up and SteamPunk genre and in Fashion on and off for about 3 years and dedicated solo to fashion about 1 year. I started back into modeling when my daughter was diagnosed with cancer. QSM: Before you got into modeling, what did you do for a living? Leslie: I was a nurse in a trauma center. QSM: Tell us something about Leslie that would surprise people. Leslie: I am really a Tomboy at heart and like outdoor sports like camping in tents, fishing, and I like DIY projects. I know how to lay carpet, flooring, and tile. Lol QSM: WOW. Lol. What do you do for fun? Leslie: I love dancing and music, so anything to do around that I enjoy. And I enjoy spending time with my family. QSM: I want to talk a little bit about your daughter. Your daughter is a cancer survivor (thank God for that). How old was your daughter when she was diagnosed? Leslie: Well thank you for the blessings, she was diagnosed six weeks after her grandmother passed away from cancer. Which I took care of for 9 months daily before she died. It was Sept 5, 2012. My daughter was a young adult in school working part time. She’s the first adult onset patient in the United States diagnosed with a rare Pediatric Cancer in 19 years. QSM: What kind of Cancer did she have? Leslie: She was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma Cancer, a rare bone cell cancer. It’s a mutation in the DNA of the bone cell that when children break a bone or go thru puberty this cell that’s been lying dominant wakes up and instead of healing the bone turns them into cancer cells. Only about 100-200 kids a year world-wide are diagnosed with this type of Cancer. 70% of them die during chemo due to the aggressive treatment, and of the 30% that survived 60% died within 5years after treatment from side effects or health issues from chemo and radiation. QSM: Congrats to her and you on your victory with that? Those are some odds to beat. Leslie: Thank you, she is blessed although she still had a lot of health issues. She’s coming up on four years cancer free. We are truly blessed. QSM: How did that affect your modeling career? Leslie: It hasn’t really affected my career; the photographers and clients worked with me around her schedule and are very understanding. I’m truly grateful to them for continuing to higher and refer me; it’s their way of helping me with her medical bills.

QSM: You have been afforded many great opportunities in your career; what is your secret? Leslie: Never take No for an answer. And being organized and persistent.
Get to knowCrystal
QSM: Other than your daughter, who and what inspire you to push so hard? Leslie: My God! He put this dream in my heart and HE will see me through. And quite honestly, all those that say I can’t do this. The ones that put barriers in my way. I’m a believer that you can do anything or be anything you want regardless of race, sex, age and economical background.
QSM: You are on the smaller side of plus; do you think it would be harder for models that are size 18 or higher to get the opportunities that you have? Leslie: No I think it’s easier, with the increase and visibility of Plus size models size 18+ being socially acceptable it’s the IN between sizes like mine the 8-12/14 that are not represented in advertising, print and runway . QSM: I’m sure you get the looks from other models that are bigger than you are when you go to shows and/or castings. I ask because I have heard this before. How do you handle moments like that? Leslie: With a smile! Smiling is contagious and putting a personality with my appearance helps to minimize the looks. QSM: How did the acting come along? Leslie: I was always involved in acting even as a child it was a way my parents could deal with my over active personality. QSM: YOU? Overactive personality? NAH!!! LOL… What are some words of advice that you can offer models that are trying to find their way in this industry and become mainstream models? Leslie: Do your research. Check out references on photographers and castings, be organized and stay current on the upcoming fashion trends, designers and the industry. Be patient it doesn’t happen overnight. Educate yourself, take posing and walking classes every 3-6 months; runway and print trends can change from season to season. QSM: What can we be on the lookout for from you Leslie? Leslie: Well I am the first Plus size female model to open a males Show during men’s fashion week. I’m NYDJ Jeans new social media brand model the first ad will come out in O Magazine and I start filming in August for a main character in a new film. QSM: Congratulations. Please keep up the great work. You are deserving of everything; including this cover. Thank you for your time. Any final thoughts you want to leave us with? Leslie: No thank you!!! Believe in yourself and others will follow. Your scars, stretch marks and imperfections make you unique so you are perfect, there is Only ONE YOU. Most of all enjoy what you do find time to invest in yourself.

Roxanne Trissia The best word that can be used to describe this dynamic singer and worship minister is COMMITTED. She is committed to her Lord and Savior, committed to her ministry, committed to her family and committed to fulfill her divine purpose in life. Born to parents, who themselves are in the ministry; Roxanne had no choice but to be committed. Her father, Minister James Bryan, was a drummer and Roxanne got her musicality from him. Her mother, Evangelist Valrie Bryan, was her chief motivator, always pushing her to achieve more. From birth, her parents asked God to implant into her all the skills they did not have, but wanted. God therefore made her a singer, songwriter, and worship leader, just to name a few. Roxanne Trissia grew up in the Apostolic Church and committed her life to the Lord at the age of nine. Her first instrument was the drums and she later fell in love with the bass guitar. When she migrated to the United States, God expanded her skills and she transitions into leading worship. Roxanne has had a host of musical mentors including, International Gospel Artists, Roger and Sam Grandison and her vocal coach Ashaala Shanae of the Musical Arts and Healing Institute, who have inspired, counseled and encouraged her in songwriting and in ministry. This journey in ministry that has led Roxanne to this point in her life has been long and distinguished. In her teens, she sang at numerous concerts and church event with an all-fe ma le gospel group called The Sensationals. From 2009- 2012 Roxanne had been ministering with Renew’d, a group of praise and worship leaders from different denominations, committed to one purpose: lifting up the Most High God. She has shared stage with gospel music greats like Roger & Sam Grandison, William Murphy, Ashaala Shanae and the Caribbean Gospel Queen Marvia Providence. She currently serves as the Minister of Music at The Sanctuary of Emmanue l Apostolic Church under the leadership of Pastor Carl Wauchope. RoxanneTrissia earnestly serves her congregation with the joy of worshiping her God, the one who sustains her. Roxanne’s latest single “Everything Will Be Ok” was produced by Othniel Lewis with music by the Grammy nominated duo Sly &Robbie. Her Live Debut Album will be recorded live in Florida on October 8th 2016. She has tentative plans to launch the project in Jamaica, the land of her birth.

”Sometimes you don’t want to do what you are called to do; then your passion ignites and you are passionate again”
QSM: Where did you grow up? Roxanne: On the beautiful island of Jamaica. QSM: Tell me about your years growing up? Roxanne: All I knew was school and church. I was involved in the choir at a young age. Then I learned to play the drums, after that I started playing the bass guitar; I’m self taught. I knew I was called to ministry from a young age because I had no appetite for the world. QSM: Much like you, I grew up in the church. Did you ever at any point feel pressured to stay in the ministry? Roxanne: No not at all. I wouldn’t say I felt pressured to stay in ministry. Now don’t get me wrong, ministry is not easy and there are times I feel “churched” out and don’t want to be in church. I’ve had times like that. But eventually the feelings subside and I fall in love with church and ministry all over again. It’s kinda the way everyone is with something they are passionate about. Sometimes you don’t want to do what you are called to do; then your passion ignites and you are passionate again. So no there was no pressure at all. QSM: When did you realize that you had a gift in writing music? Roxanne: I would say 5 years ago. I’ve always excelled in writing. My college major was Political Science and after that I went to Law School and you know that’s all writing. So I basically love to write. So one day I said to myself, I’m singing other people’s songs, if I’m so good at writing my papers for school, why can’t I write songs. My first song was Committed and that song has been such an awesome blessing. I was so surprised at myself when I wrote it. Photo credits: Tara Inc Photography

ROXANNE TRISSIA| QSM
QSM: Do you write all of your own music? Roxanne: Not all of my songs are written by me. I believe that variety is the spice of life and I like to have variety and different flavors in the songs I record and minister. I’ve been blessed to have awesome writers and co-writers on my team. QSM: As a songstress, did you ever dip into singing any other genre of music or has gospel always been it for you? Roxanne: I appreciate every type of music as long as it has clean lyrics. I love Reggae, Calypso Hip Hop, Jazz and Classical music. I love to sing/listen to R&B and I’m quite fond of the oldies but goodies. QSM: Roxanne, I must have listened to your song ‘Committed’ about 50 times. That song has gotten me through some personal moments. What was your inspiration behind the song? Roxanne: Committed was the first song I wrote and it was written at a point in time where I didn’t want to go to church anymore. I felt burnt out. So I was planning to take a break from church. Then God spoke to me and asked what If He decided to take a break from allowing me to breathe, what would happen to me? I was like, “you know God; you are so right.” Then I just started singing Lord here I am, Lord here I stand, Lord take my life for I am committed to you. This song has really ministered to me in my low seasons. I took the song to Ashaala Shanae and he helped me develop the song. For this album I re-arranged it and so can’t wait for the world to hear what we did. It’s an amazing song of commitment to God. QSM: If I can get a bit personal for a minute; we always interview men and women in the fashion industry and we discuss their journeys as full figured women and men. As a beautiful full figured woman who is not in the industry, can you share your struggles? Roxanne: Struggles ha ha, where do I start? The struggle is so real. Since I’ve known myself I’ve always been watching my diet and going on diets, working out etc. I used to have self esteem issues but I’ve fallen in love with me. I used to want to look like other skinny girls, but no more. I love my curves and my sexiness. Yes I said it! Yes I eat well but I still have ice cream or a slice of cake from time to time. I try to basically live a healthy lifestyle and treat myself from time to time. QSM: Have you always been a full figured woman? Roxanne: No I haven’t always been full figured. I grew up so skinny my doctor called me malnourished. I refused to eat… then puberty set in. After high school I started gaining weight. Then kids added a few more pounds. Now I’m a comfortable size and weight but I’m trying to shed a few more but not much. I’m also trying to be more toned. I do not want to be skinny; I love my curves. QSM: In fashion, models are always told that they have to drop pounds to obtain or maintain a certain look. Do you have that issue in the music industry? Roxanne: It’s an unspoken expectation. Image sells believe it or not. You have to have the full package. Image is very close to the top of the things you need to be successful in the music industry, if it’s not number 1. QSM: Who and what inspires you? Roxanne: My first inspiration is God and right after that are
33
my parents. They are immigrants who came to the US and they made a life for me and my siblings. They inspired me to always reach for the stars and never ever think of yourself as insignificant. We had a comfortable life growing up and my parents were not rich. They worked hard so that my generation would be successful. I’m going to work just as hard to make my kids more successful than I am. That’s how it’s supposed to be. Each generation is supposed to do better than the prior generation and so forth. QSM: Can you share a moment in your life when music became your savior? Roxanne: Music has been my savior so many times. I’ve been single for a few years now and music is what keeps me sane. I just stay home, turn on my music and I’m good. During this time of singleness, music keeps me busy. You know the saying that the devil gives work to idle hands? Well I have absolutely no time to be bad because music keeps me busy and busy is good. QSM: I hear you have a new single out, can you tell us about that? Roxanne: My single is taken from my Live Recording ”The Promise”. The song title is You Reign and was written by my aunt Sam Grandison and produced by Martin Christie and Mickey Platt Jr. I featured JJ Hairston on the single. I had a blast working with JJ Hairston. He’s such a humble and down to earth person with a kind spirit. The single will be released July 14th via worldwide digital distribution. QSM: That must be very exciting; congratulations. How did this collaboration come about? Roxanne: Well thanks to my manager and producer Martin Christie who made it all possible. He is a close friend of Mr. Hairston and he told him about me and my project, sent him the song and he was excited and thrilled to be a part. I was honestly blown away when I heard that I was going to be sharing the stage with this great vessel of God. It’s not every day that something like this happens. God’s timing is so perfect! QSM: Where can people get this new single along with your other projects? Roxanne: You can find me on all the digital outlets worldwide i.e. ITunes, Apple Music, Googleplay, Amazon, Spotify etc. My songs are on regular rotation in Jamaica on NCU 91.1 Radio the premiere gospel station on the island. Shout out to my sister Basillia Barnaby-Cuff, as well as in Trinidad on Isaac 98.1 FM, shout out to DJ Mickey. Plans are also in the works to get the single played on US stations so look out for more to come on that soon! QSM: For the many people who will read this article, what advice/encouragement can you offer them to stay encouraged and follow their dreams? Roxanne: Many times God makes promises to us and we tend to grow weary while we are waiting for the Promise to be fulfilled. Sometimes we are right at the edge and ready to give up. But hold on and trust and believe in the promise of God. If God promised you have to believe what He said. God will never go back on His word. Just be encouraged, hold on a keep pressing. It’s going to happen!

Queen. Model. Poet. Mentor. Coach. Legacy. These are a few titles that Audrey holds, but there is more to who she truly is behind each title. If you had to ask her she would proudly say that modeling is not something she saw for herself when she had dreams of her future. Audrey is originally from Philadelphia but grew up on the shores of St. Thomas, USVI. The small island community helped shape her into who she is today; teaching her lessons in tenacity, courage, resilience, and forgiveness. These lessons and her own stories help her to create a narrative that profoundly impacts the way she navigates through her modeling journey and every avenue that the journey winds down. In 2014, Audrey won the inaugural Miss USVI Large and In-Charge queen competition in the Virgin Islands and subsequently went on to compete in the 2014 Miss Plus America competition where she placed 2nd Runner up in the Miss division. It was on the stage where Audrey found her voice and her confidence to show and teach women, young and seasoned, their pasts and the perceptions of others do not dictate their future. Their stories are blueprints and they must harness the power in those stories to encourage and empower each other to pursue greatness. She knows that there is no sure-fire way to succeed at it but the true success is in trying. Audrey uses modeling as a platform to start conversations about the impact we have on others and the imprint we are set to leave behind. She would consider herself a legacy builder more than a model, because at her core, her purpose is to inspire others. Every picture, every runway, and every opportunity she uses as a visual for what a person can do once they remove the limits off their confidence. It takes work but that’s where her future endeavors come into play. Audrey is a published poet and knows that sometimes the best way to reach someone is to put it in print. She is looking forward to completing her first empowerment book with personal anecdotes and poetry in the coming year. She is also ecstatic that she will be a certified life coach and working with AIM High Empowerment Institute in Bronx, NY in the near future. Life is meant to be lived and legacies are meant to be built, there’s no way around it other than to do it.

QSM: You are one impressive young lady Audrey. You were born in Philadelphia? That is something that I did not know about you. How old were you when you moved to St. Thomas? And why did you move? Audrey: Impressive?? (chuckles) Thank you. I have done quite a bit in the past few years, some mentioned, some not mentioned but I feel as I’m just getting started. Yes, I was. I was about two or three when we moved to St. Thomas. My family is West Indian and my mother was born there. She decided to move back home. I kind of didn’t have much a choice in the matter. QSM: What led you to enter your first competition in 2014? And then the Miss Plus America competition? Audrey: To be honest, it all started with dinner, lol! A few years ago, I was having dinner with one of my closest friends and the pageant director, William Chandler, for MLAIC stopped me and said I should do it. Then my friend Vikhe cosigned, and before I knew it I had my aunt in TX confirming my participation! They all saw it, I was hesitant because I knew the politics and drama of pageantry and I did not want that to be a part of my story. But ultimately I decided to do it because at the point in my life I need to do something amazing that would change the trajectory of my life. I wasn’t getting to where I saw myself with what I was doing prior to that and needed that push. Vying for Miss Plus America came on the heels of MLAIC. Again, my pageant director wanted to continue pushing the bar for Virgin Islands representation and we got things together to pursue that. To be the FIRST representative for the Virgin Islands to place in the same year was pretty amazing. I have learned, and grown a lot from the experience. QSM: In the Virgin Islands, did you come across women with low confidence? I’m not sure why I saw woman from the Virgin Islands as the complete opposite; I always thought that they were beautiful and that they saw themselves the same. Audrey: We are confident and beautiful but we do suffer from the same insecurities and body images issues as other women. For my perspective, at least living in the VI, it’s harder for women to be truly confident with themselves because we are constantly on the outside looking in. All we have are images and representation from abroad that tell us how we should be. Living in a very small community where everyone knows everyone and everyone does the same thing, there is no room for
individuality and we are left in this one size fits all box. Those of us that dare to step outside of the typical VI mentality and lifestyle are rarely held in regard and sometimes it’s extremely hard to remain confident about who we are as women. Thankfully I have partnered with some great women that are changing that stigma for young girls and women and I look forward to continuing the work that has been started. QSM: What is the fashion market like out there? I may need to take a trip. Lol Audrey: Yes!! Let’s go, but it’s straight to the beach!! We can be fabulous soaking up sun rays. Well, fashion market is pretty much like what you see in the US. It’s good but it can better. I know some amazing seamstresses and young designers that can truly change the fashion culture of the Virgin Islands but the lack of support is stifling. Only a small handful makes it and they have to leave the islands to really pursue it. I would love for the market to bust wide open, especially for my plus women. I can see that happening. QSM: What brought you back to the states? Audrey: This round, I moved to help my sister. She was transitioning with the Army and I offered to help her with my nieces while she PCSd. This move was not under the circumstances I wanted to move, and it was sudden but I’m here lol!! It is not without its challenges but I have learned the greatest lessons will be the ones that require the most discipline and sacrifice from you. QSM: Why modeling? What is your overall goal? Audrey: Wow, why modeling? Modeling sort of fell in to my lap. The same year I won my title I walked in my first show. Actually, let me be completely transparent. I have been “practicing” at this since 2007. I started with a great friend and photographer, Mickey Armstrong, when I was in Virginia and he told me then that I could do it, and be great at it. I laughed it off for years, but he kept at me. He kept supporting me and talking me off the ledge, he still does. The first show I walked in was District of Curves and that was my wake up call. Now, do I want to be a Liris Crosse, Iman, Christina Mendez…..not really lol! Don’t get me wrong, I will work to continue slaying runways and gracing magazine spreads, but modeling for me is mainly my ministry.

I use it as a visual for my mentorship. To teach and help young girls grow and understand they can do what I do or whatever they want to, that’s the reward for me. I just work to be great at it all. QSM: Name three models that inspire you. Audrey: Now, this is a little off putting considering the subject but there is only one. Toccara. I love and respect the rest of the plus models in the game but Toccara was the first one that came out that I could relate to. Her personality, her body type, and her passion for it. I thought to myself, man I really dig her and I love her drive. If they could let her really shine she would wreck ish! QSM: So you are currently working on your first book; tell us about that and when we can expect it out? Audrey: Yes, it is my baby!! And the birthing process is something else. In a time where it seems like everyone is coming out with a book, it’s a little daunting to be working on one. I am working on a confidence and empowerment nonfiction. It’s personal for me because I’m using my own anecdotes and experiences to create the blueprint of “uncurbing” your confidence and translating it for others to heal from. I am a bit of a perfectionist and because I am writing pieces of me and my poetry into it, you’ll see it start to unveil by fall 2018, universe willing. QSM: Tell us something quirky about you that would make people laugh? Audrey: Hmmmm?? Well I am a big goofball when I’m ready lol!! There is picture evidence of that. But the quirkiest thing would have to be I sometimes dream in Spanish and I often like to think of my life as a musical! Complete with catchy songs, dance routines, and the breakout flash mobs that make a great musical memorable lol! QSM: Where can people follow you and your journey? Audrey: Anyone wanting to follow the journey can follow me on social media! IG @queenladylegacy, FB: fb.com/ ladylegacyvi Twitter: @queenladylegacy Website and blog: www.ladylegacy.net and www.ladylegacyspeaks.wordpress. com. DETRAS POWELL I have fallen in love with the woman who God has designed me to be. My body is perfect just for me! I have learned to accept that I’m unique & I’m not like other people. My flaws have allowed me to embrace everything with pure grace. My smile is something that I take pride in because it is generated from deep within! I was the first baby born on New Year Day back in Alabama to a teenage mother. I was raised in Bayonne, later moving and settling in Jersey City, NJ. I’m a mother of 5 children, Diamond Patten 25, Montavious Patten, 23 who’s a Military Police for the Army National Guard, Ajee Patten 21, Anthony Howard 18, who just completed NJ Military Youth Challenge Program and Atiyah Kimble 14. I’m also a devoted wife to my husband Harlan Powell of 8 years, a proud stepmother and a Mee’ma to a little boy who has stolen my heart 4 years ago. I have been modeling for two years now. In the short period of time, I have accomplished so much. My journey started when my husband gave me a gift of Pole fitness at Alter Ego Pole Fitness Studio in Hoboken, NJ with Caprice Burrell. That gift changed my life for the better. I know you are scratching your head and wondering how did pole fitness turn into modeling. Well, that’s where my confidence began to take shape. ”THE EGG” I was the only Plus Size woman in a room filled with smaller woman who seemed fit, active and confident. I was so afraid to try anything on the pole because I didn’t want the other woman to look at me in a negative way. I wouldn’t even wear the appropriate attire to class because I was so shy and embarrassed of what was under my clothing (fat, rolls, dimples in my thighs and a really big belly). This went on for weeks but I never gave up. I continued to go back week after week, gaining more strength and confidence. One day I decided to put my all into something I had dreamed about (Pole fitness dancing). I walked into to that class with my chest as broad as an eagle and ripped those long pants off and expose my thighs that I had been hiding for weeks. I got on that pole and tried my best to do all that was being taught that night. My confidence had begun to take shape. During my progress in Pole Class, I met a few other positive women. One woman asked if I would like to volunteer at a woman’s shelter with her one day and I happily agreed. This is when the ”Caterpillar” stage started. I walked into this woman’s shelter and tears instantly began to fill my eyes. I was re-visiting a place I once called home with four of my children. In a matter of moments, I would be standing in front of women who were once me (single, struggling, homeless, uneducated and low selfesteemed). I gathered all my emotions and walked in and there it was, my past. I couldn’t hold my emotions in because all that I had endured had resurfaced. When it was my time to speak, my tears spoke in volumes to the room. I finally got the words out that ”Your current situation isn’t your permanent situation”. After my speech was delivered, a huge weight was lifted from my shoulders. The women that were there saw me as their ”hero”. From then on my confidence was becoming more evident in my life. I even managed to go back to school and get my GED which led me straight to college earning my Associates degree in Health Care Administration. I was introduced to pageantry. I entered my very first competition. I didn’t do as well as I wish I could have. My speech had walked out the door and so did my confidence. F.A.I.L (First Attempt In Learning). That didn’t stop me from competing for a second time. This is the ”Chrysalis” stage. I knew I needed to prepare for a comeback. I took make up classes with Crystal Carmen Inc. modeling walk classes with Jeannie Ferguson, I even joined the Queen Size Management Team. I did everything I needed to do to prepare me. I was soaking up all the knowledge I needed to be better than I was. The day has arrived. My name was called, I prayed and walked out on that stage and belted out a speech from the pit of my soul. The crowd stood to their feet and I walked down that runway like I won the crown! I was awarded 1st Runner up and Rising Star. THE BUTTERFLY HAS EMERGED!!!! I have gone on to appear in the About U section of FabUplus magazine. I have done a YouTube interview about my placement as well as Modeled for Smart Glamour clothing line. I have also walked in a few fashion shows as well. I also have competed in the Face of Kurvacious Model Competition winning the People’s Choice Award and Social Media diva and now I’m the Face of Kurvacious Model Liasion Director. I have also landed a leading role in ”Stay Standing” stage play, by Oonay Productions. All this has also allowed me to be a part of my first Screen Actors Guild Film called NOT YOUR CALL as a Production Assistant (Hair/ Makeup/Wardrobe) for the entire staff. My life has had many ups and downs but I never gave up on ME. I knew all the difficult times would one day be the reasons why I smile. I look back on everything I have endured with a smile because as I have grown in the Lord, I know all those moments were my steps and stages I had to go through to be the woman I am today. My strength comes from the Lord. I will never give up on my Praise! I know where my help comes from. I was designed to give HOPE, bring JOY, spread LOVE, to ENCOURAGE and be that INSPIRATION someone needs! ”THERE’S A BUTTERFLY IN EACH OF US”

IJEOMAA MORTON Hello all, my name is Ijeomaa Morton. I am 29 years old and I currently reside in the DMV area. I am an African American with Nigerian and Nevisian decent. I have two beautiful children and I am currently a stay at home mom to my newest edition, my daughter Mahogany. Previous to that I worked in a Charter School in NYC. I love children; they hold a special place in my heart. Children are a big reason why I would like to become a plus size model. Growing up I saw certain images of women who were considered beautiful. I was always told by television or someone directly what beauty was supposed to be. Although these images were in fact beautiful, there was one problem....THEY DIDN’T LOOK LIKE ME! Because of this I grew up feeling unworthy. I had horrible self-esteem. My turning point came when I had a conversation with my aunt who I feel is gorgeous; growing up I was always told that I resemble her. During this conversation I cried in her arms and asked her why I was so fat and ugly? She said ”baby there is nothing fat and ugly about you. You can’t be ugly, you look like me!” From that moment on I fought with myself to change my perception of beauty. It took years before I can say I totally became comfortable in my Queen size body. I want to be some little girl’s definition of beauty. I want her to look at me and say ”although I am not a size small I am beautiful like her”. This means more to me now that I have a daughter. Although I don’t know what size she will grow up to be, I want her to feel comfortable and confident in herself at all times and that starts with me (her first role model). In my spare time I love shopping. Some of my favorite stores include Fashion To Figure, Torrid, and Monif C. I feel like these stores dress my size 22 perfectly. I also love to sing, read, cook and be a mom to my son and daughter. I love doing shoots to build my modeling portfolio. In October 2015 I won second place in the Miss Big and Beautiful pageant. As you can see, my life is dedicated to being a role model to young ladies everywhere and to changing the beauty standards once and for all. Cheers to all the Queen size women of world!!!
