SWEET AND SAVORY WAYS TO INDULGE DURING THE HOLIDAYS WITHOUT SABOTAGING YOUR WELLNESS GOALS One of the greatest pleasures of the holidays is enjoying traditional flavors of the season. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to indulge without discarding all your wellness goals. You can enjoy festive foods if you plan ahead for holiday events, and make dishes that aren’t loaded with carbs and sugar - but still satisfy your cravings. “It’s easy to throw your wellness goals out the window during the season, thinking you can make up for it later,” said Colette Heimowitz, vice president, Nutrition & Education, Simply Good Foods. “But with a few smart choices, you can celebrate the season without jeopardizing your nutrition goals.” Here are some tips - and recipes - to help you indulge more thoughtfully this year. Prep for healthier holiday gatherings When you know you’ll be celebrating at an event chock full of carbs and sweets, plan WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|THE 2021 HOLIDAY ISSUE

ahead. * Keep your energy up while prepping for holiday get-togethers by enjoying an Atkins Vanilla Latte Iced Coffee Protein Shake, with 15 grams of protein, 1 gram of sugar and as much caffeine as a cup of coffee. * Don’t arrive at a party famished so you’re less tempted to overindulge. Eat a small lowcarbohydrate meal beforehand, like salmon and salad with olive oil dressing or veggies and guacamole, to stabilize your appetite and blood sugar level. * Don’t linger near the food table. But if you are planning to partake in the buffet, opt for protein, veggies, dips, nuts and cheese. * Drink plenty of water. Thirst is often mistaken for hunger, so staying hydrated helps you avoid overeating. Flavor up your water with lemon, lime or cucumber slices.

Ageless Beauty By Lala Sanyang Hello my Queens, Have you ever wondered how some women never seem to age or still look so youthful in their mature years? There are various factors that can account for an ageless beauty. It has become almost impossible to guess one’s age in today’s age of beauty interventions. Although we cannot stop the aging process, we can embrace our confidence help preserve and reduce some of the signs of aging non surgically. It can simply begin with applying sunscreen fifteen minutes before sun exposure and every two hours after. You want to protect yourself from UVA rays (Wave Ultraviolet A) which are considered as the aging rays. They can prematurely age the skin be causing wrinkles and discolorations. Gently cleansing the skin twice a day and applying a moisturizer has an added benefits because over time the skin can lose water and this is called Transepidermal water loss. Moisturizing can help trap water in the skin giving it a youthful look. Non-surgical facial treatment such as Microdermabrasion, and Galvanic can also reduce the signs of aging on your face and neck. These machines reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, scars, marks, and imperfections. I am a fan of the Microdermabrasion facial treatment and I have enjoyed watching the improvements in my skin along with my skin care routine. Visit a trusted licensed Esthetician to learn more about theses facial treatments to start your ageless beauty journey. It’s never too late to look and feel confident in the skin you are becoming. DRINKING YOUR WATER & TAKING YOUR VITAMINS LEADS TO HEALTHY HAIR PART TWO

By Crystal D. Lewis WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|THE 2021 HOLIDAY ISSUE

THE ROAD TO HEALTHIER HAIR..... | CRYSTAL D. LEWIS Hello Ladies and Gentlemen! We are going to start this off with scripture if you do not mind. 6 But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground. 7And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. 8 And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9 And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. (Genesis 2:6-9 KJV) Now the reason why I started this way this time is, God, took dust and or dirt depending on how you heard this scripture and breathed life into man. Now yes dirt is made up of clay, rocks, silt, sand, etc. but yet the soil is made up of material composed of five ingredients — minerals, soil organic matter, living organisms, gas, and water. Which we as humans are made of. So why are we neglecting our bodies that the Lord has created us with in the beginning? In today’s busy and modern lifestyle, it can be challenging to get enough of the nutrients needed for the body from the food we eat. Generally, the body requires a particular amount of minerals and vitamins to function. (I recommend that you ask your doctor for a vitamin deficiency test) Every person has a recommended daily amount (RDA) of all essential vitamins. For instance, the body requires a certain amount of vitamin K for the blood to flow properly and vitamin D to absorb calcium. Some nutrients may also help support bodily functions, like the skin’s integrity and collagen. There are so many benefits of taking vitamins on a daily basis: PROMOTES HEALTHY AGING An effective and simple way to promote healthy aging is to drink your water and take vitamins and minerals. As you get older your body and mind begins to experience deficiencies, there are various vitamins and minerals that can help you to reset our nutrient levels. Unfortunately, as we age, it becomes harder for the body to absorb the muchneeded nutrients and particular medications may drain nutrients further. So again, ask your doctor or a vitamin test. Covers Your Nutritional Bases We all strive to do our best to eat healthy, but other

21

nutrients can be difficult to get from food alone. Once you take vitamins regularly and drink your water you can be assured that you’ll meet regular daily requirements for all the essential minerals and vitamins. Again, always check with your doctor before taking anything especially if you are on any medications. Supports Your Immune System With today’s current climate changes and with all the uncertainty, our immune system is more important than ever, so it only makes sense that you try and strengthen your immune system as much as possible. The common vitamin associated with strengthening your immune system, it’s vitamin C, which is known for being a strong antioxidant. Moreover, you can also take vitamins E and D to strengthen your immunity and other minerals will help also. However, relying on these vitamins isn’t enough. You still need to eat a sufficient amount of fruits and green leafy vegetables. Supports Healthy Metabolism It’s important that B complex vitamins, such as riboflavin, thiamin, B6, B12, biotin, and folate collaborate with some enzymes in your body to metabolize energy from fats, carbohydrates, and protein. Maintaining a healthy diet and staying physically active also help maintain a healthy metabolism, which are essential factors for your overall health and healthy aging. Promotes Healthier Skin and Hair By drinking your water, taking vitamins and eating healthy, it promotes healthier hair and skin. If you’re struggling with your skin, whether it’s eczema, dry skin, or acne, there are particular vitamins out there, usually vitamins E, A, D, and C can help lessen such problems. But again always please talk to your doctor or nutritionist before you take anything. In conclusion, drinking water, taking vitamins and eating healthy can do great things for your health and overall well-being. They can complement the nutrients you get from your food and bring you a step closer to your wellness and health goals. However, you can only reap the benefits if we are consistent with a daily regimen. Remember to take your vitamins regularly and combine them with a healthy balanced Lifestyle. I SAY YES! AGAIN TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR OR NUTRITIONIST BEFORE DOING ANYTHING. DRINK YOUR WATER, TAKE YOUR VITAMINS, AND EAT HEALTHY! I SAY YES! WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM| THE 2021 HOLIDAY ISSUE

HOLLYWOOD TALENT AND LITERARY AGENT & FOUNDER AND DESIGNER OF LUXURY PLUS-SIZE LINE SANTE GRACE Tracy Christian is a veteran talent and literary agent with over 20 years in Hollywood. As one of five prominent Black women agents in the industry, she is the only to own an agency. Located in Los Angeles, TCA MGMT opened its doors to trained character actors, writers, and producers in 2011. Christian has represented clients such as Oscar winners Melissa Leo, Octavia Spencer, Mo’Nique, and Emmy and Golden Globe winner Elizabeth Moss. Within the literary space, she is personally responsible for more than 1,000 hours of onair primetime programming.

Early on I remember discovering an agency called IFA. Just five agents representing a list of top tier talent. Until then, I didn’t know that it could be done. I thought that as I grew my client’s careers that I’d have to move with them to larger agencies. Eventually I had to free myself from the banality of department meetings and bring the focus back to the client. That’s why I created TCA. We’re doing something special at TCA; we’re repping talent that we’re insanely passionate about and keeping the list intentionally small so we can give the same attention as a manager with the aggressiveness, access, and deal making skills usually found at larger agencies. The agency doesn’t just find opportunities for actors in film and television or sell successful programming. Through its production imprint, Black Leather Jacket, TCA MGMT is also a content creator. Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy is the first film from the imprint and stars Laura Dern and Kristen Stewart. The film was chosen to close the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival and was released by Universal Pictures in 2019. Constantly evolving, TCA MGMT expanded its offices with a New York location in 2020. Today, Christian lives in Los Angeles and is a supporter of the American Cinematheque and is a board member of the Hollywood Central Park and HollyShorts Film Festival. Additionally, she has a passion for fashion as the founder and designer of the luxury plus-size line SANTE GRACE.

This winter, the list of things we’re looking forward to is pretty long: finally gathering with close friends and family, with caution of course, munching on good food, plenty of dessert, and actually getting dressed up in festive holiday outfits. After all, we’ve spent enough time inside, tis the season for posh parties, Friendsgiving dinners, and celebrating in style. What are some trends we are seeing for the season and holiday celebrations this year? Silver and Gold, and lots of it!!!! Something metallic with sequins screams YES this season. After loungewear sets made our sparkle take a backseat for so long, it’s time to be seen!!! Add glitz to your holiday ensemble with a silver or gold dress, skirt or blazer, as for which shape and style to go with, the choice is yours. Choose whichever silhouette you feel most fabulous in. Then add a personal twist with accessories, helping you to truly shine during your next event. Accessorizing With Sparkle and Shine, will help add life to any piece you decide to pull out of the back of the closet that still has tags on it, from that pre-pandemic purchase. An Oversized Sweater Dress is definitely a winner this season. A perfect way to feel cute while remaining comfy, is the perfect sweater dress with a bold color to stand out. Add a belt for extra accentuation in the mid-section, or don’t to leave more room for food. If your goal is to be as comfortable as possible for a holiday celebration with your pals, there’s nothing wrong with the go to 2 piece sets we know and love. Joggers and your favorite sneakers won’t disappoint anyone, just seeing your beautiful face is enough for them. However, an even easier option may be to go with a bright matching legging set, which you can make feel even more fashion-forward by color-blocking your footwear, a nice heel is preferable for a jazzier effect. For outerwear, not much has changed, a nice peacoat, puffer jackets long or short, or heavy layering will be sufficient as long as it keeps us warm. Whatever you choose to wear this holiday season, do it with love and the intent to live life to its fullest. After the last year and some change, we’ve learned to go to the party, take that vacation, wear the outfit, and so much more!!! It’s time to live!!!! Happy Holidays to all!!

LaShawn DeAngelo Millner Fashion Designer, Stylist and Entrepreneur

by Dr. Janelle “The Curvy Doc” Simmons

I had the wonderful opportunity to Interview LaShawn Millner, creator of Designs by DeAngelo, and recently named co-winner of Outstanding Male Designer at the 2021 Full-Figured Industry Awards. LaShawn has been on the scene since 2015, when a series of unfortunate events led to him creating a dress for a family member, and then the launch of his first collection, appropriately called the Alpha Collection. Designs by DeAngelo has grown from designing party dresses and jumpsuits to wedding dresses and pageant wear. I’ve been honored to wear many of LaShawn’s Design’s during my pageant journey. Sit back, relax, and learn more about the man behind the brand.

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT | LASHAWN DEANGELO MILLNER

Janelle: How did Designs by DeAngelo come about? LaShawn: Designs by DeAngelo came about from me being in a dark place, and honestly asking God to show me my purpose. Anybody that knows me knows I’m very spiritual, and God spoke to me and told me to make a dress for my aunt. And I’m saying, like, what, I don’t know anything about a sewing machine. I don’t know anything about a pattern. I don’t know any of this stuff. But you’re telling me to make a dress. So, I’m obedient. And I called my aunt and I told her I wanted to make her a preaching garment. And I made the garment in three days. I mean, I’m talking about like, cut, fit…the whole nine. And literally, from that point, Designs by DeAngelo was born. I was trying to figure out, like, how to learn how to do certain things. And I didn’t know…I didn’t have any technical background. I didn’t know anything about fashion, except that I like clothes. That’s it. And so I went to YouTube, and I just started learning how to do several different things. And then I started making garments and posting them on Facebook. People started seeing it and asking, and I just started making stuff. And it just went from there, honestly, and each client that I got from that point was just like my guinea pig, and I wasn’t charging a whole lot, you know, it was just like, pay me this. And let me let me make it. Janelle: So, this was something that just kind of came up? You didn’t know say, “I think I’m going to design clothes.” LaShawn: It wasn’t even something I thought about. It wasn’t a thought for me. Being a fashion designer was never in my head, I just always knew that I was going to be a singer or an actor. Never that I think that I would have a company that caters to, you know, plus size and big and tall and be as creative as I am. I never knew that I had it. It’s truly a gift from God that I’d never knew I had. Janelle: I must congratulate you because you just won Outstanding Male designer at the Full-Figured Industry Awards. How did you feel hearing your name called? LaShawn: Everybody knows at the show, it was a glitch. So, I’m sitting there and I’m watching the show. And they bring up my category. And then I hear, “And the winner is Robert E Knight”. And then that was like skipping. And then it goes to my voice. This isn’t Robert’s voice. I’m confused. And it ended up being that we both won the category, but there was a skip from where they announced my name as well and

37

presented his video of his acceptance. When I got the news that I had won, I was really ecstatic. I don’t know, sometimes I feel, and I tell people this all the time, I don’t give myself my own props. I didn’t feel like I was going to win. You know what I’m saying? Like I was up against all these amazing contenders. And I’m just like, I don’t know that I want to win this. But in the moment, I felt very grateful and honored. that I won. Janelle: You’ve, designed so many different types of outfits. One type of clothing you’ve become known for designing is pageant wear. Can you talk about how you got into that area of design? LaShawn: It was honestly you who saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself. That’s honestly how I got into pageant wear, you coming to me and saying, “Hey, can you design this collection for me?” And I think we started with that Queen Collection. That was the first collection that we did for you. Which was the blue dress with the blue tulle and the bathing suit and transformation dress. That was the purple and pink. Yeah, so that’s literally how I got into pageant wear. Janelle: Yes, you did that collection, which I’m so thankful for. And you also designed my fashion wear for the American Beauties Plus Pageant, the yellow jumpsuit. LaShawn: I think that one was one of my favorite pieces, the yellow and the blue are like two of my favorite pieces that I did for you. And I think they mean the most to me, because of me, as a designer. I never say no to anything because I feel like anytime I say no, that’s me stifling myself from being able to grow or learn anything. Growing up my mom told me that “can’t” is not a word in my vocabulary, that’s not a word that we use. So anytime that I get someone who requests something of me, I’m maybe apprehensive about it. But I’m going to sit there and do my best to learn how to do it. And then that moment, and both of those moments, I didn’t know what I was doing. But I learned it in the process. So that’s the reason why those two pieces stand out the most to me. Because they were literally like pieces that I had to work my way through. I think that was my first time ever doing like an off the shoulder type dress, you know, and having to do alterations, so they fit you the way it needs to fit. So forever grateful for you.

Janelle: Awww, thank you! What have you learned from this journey? You started your pageant design journey with me, and then. You began designing for other contestants. LaShawn: One of the things that sticks out to me the most is that everybody is different and not and I’m not saying everybody, but EVERY BODY is different. You have to know how to sew and how to cut for that body, so that it represents not only you. The thing that I live by as a designer is that anytime you put on my piece, I want you to feel so beautiful, I want you to have the most self-esteem, I want that piece to bring out everything that you want it to bring out in you. Because that’s what it’s supposed to do. It’s supposed to give you that power and that strength, that’s what fashion does. It pulls out everything that you want, to exude of yourself. Anytime I do a piece, the main focus is to bring out the absolute best of that person, show their best attributes and make it stand out, make it pop and make them feel gorgeous. I think that’s what a lot of designers don’t realize; everybody’s not cookie cutter. You can’t cut every dress the same way. You just can’t. A mermaid is not made for everybody. You have to really know how to navigate that conversation with your client without being dismissive in a way to say no, you can’t do

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|THE 2021 HOLIDAY ISSUE

this, but how about we try this. So those are some things that I’ve really learned in the process of designing for pageantry is to just navigate people to understand what’s good for them and what they see other people do; just be uniquely you. Janelle: That brings me to my next topic about styles and what works for different people. Everyone wants glam, especially pageant glam. What would you say are great pageant styles or the most popular? As you mentioned, every body is different. LaShawn: Honestly, sometimes don’t say it, but less is more. I like to be simplistic, especially when it comes to glam. When it comes down to the body shapes and things like that, it’s just knowing okay, if you have an issue with your stomach, let’s not put you in this dress, let’s not put you in this mermaid, let’s put you in this umpire waist dress, or this A-line dress that hits you and it flows out, or let’s put you in something that’s a pebble of something that’s going to shape you and draw attention to areas that you’re not as uncomfortable with. It’s all about attracting the eye to where you want it to go. That’s with any and everything. The eye goes exactly where you want it to go when you add styles and cuts in, in certain things to certain areas. So you draw attention away from other things.

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT | LASHAWN DEANGELO MILLNER Janelle: What has been your most challenging pageant wear to date? LaShawn: The most challenging one I will have to say was the North Carolina costume that I did for you. I literally did that skirt five times. I wanted to be sure that the cut was right. I wanted to be sure it stood out the right way. And it did what I was supposed to do. So that was one of my most challenging pieces. And it was because of the start in the cut and learning how to do that cut. Janelle: What would you like to create that you have not done yet? LaShawn: One thing that I would love to master is the panel dress…those big voluminous panel dresses that you see brides wearing. I would love to mask that in a couture way though. I have done it the easy way. But I want to master it the way that you see it with the underskirt, and you know…all the boning and horsehair and all the technical things that go into making this dress. I want to learn how to do it and actually master it. Janelle: What’s next for Designs by DeAngelo? LaShawn: I really am going to be honest, 2022 I said was going to be my year that I said, for all intents purposes, f*** it you’re about to get all of it. I’m letting all of it out. I’m letting it all show. I’m free to be me…that that’s my motto for 2022. And I really want to display that in my fashion. I want people to see where I’ve grown as a designer. And I want to put things on the runway that are expected for straight size models; I want that couture. I want that Christian Siriano, Oscar de la Renta…I want to be that type of designer. That’s my aesthetic. So yes, you can expect to see a collection for me in 2022. I don’t know where it will be or where it will be displayed, but it’s gonna happen. Janelle: That is exciting, because I think there’s a lot of people that are wondering when you’re going to come out with your next collection, especially after creating the very popular formation dress when you debuted Designs by DeAngelo. You’re probably wondering how you can top that formation dress because once you came out with that dress, everyone started doing their own versions. LaShawn: I think that’s a part of why I haven’t come out with something because it’s like, who wants to come out and do something mediocre? You know? That’s the reason why I have to really hone in on my skill and elevate it, it’s got to go up. If it’s not gonna be ready to wear and if it’s gonna be gowns the gowns have to be that next level, like they just have to be. Because I can’t settle for anything other than that. I can’t give you guys as my peers, anything less than that.

39

Janelle: We got the holidays coming up. What’s the hottest holiday wear? LaShawn: Can I be real? I haven’t focused in on fashion this year, as far as like, what will be hot but what I could see what I would see being hot would just be sequins…sequins done in a sexy way with some sheer and some bling and short cut. I see, some circle skirts, and just fluffy…just given holiday cheer. That’s what I see as a trend for the holidays. If someone were to ask me to design something for the holidays, I will probably nine times out of 10 give them a solid sequined dress to the floor with as much volume as possible with a little piece of train, maybe off the shoulder or something one sleeve. And that would be that will be what I would see as on trim for the holiday season if we’re going to a Christmas party. Janelle: Is there anything else that you want to share that you have not shared? LaShawn: I’ve moved back to North Carolina, which was a move that I made based off some things that God had given me, so I’m back here for now. And I say for now, because there’s always a pause in that because I’m working on my real estate license. I’m from North Carolina. I’ve also started my candle company, D Scents candles and more. D Scents is literally like, my “f you” to people’s opinions. My journey in New York was so much more than just moving there to see what it felt like to live in New York; it was literally my time to be by myself, and to learn who I am. And to literally learn how to love who I am. And be okay with that. I was brought up to not hate who I was, because I was told that it wasn’t right. It’s not okay, it leads you to hell, and all these other things. But New York was literally my spiritual journey. It was my eye-opening experience that showed me that life is so much more than the things that people put in your head. You have to get your own experiences. You have to have your own spiritual journey. And you have to also be comfortable in who you are in order to be successful at anything in life. That’s what I found. You have to literally be okay with who you are, and love you, first and foremost, and be your greatest cheerleader. At the end of the day, when you can’t depend on anybody else, you have to rely on yourself to keep pushing and to keep going. That’s literally where I am right now. I’m in a place where I’m just ready to lay it all out. And if I’m a hot mess on this day, I’m a hot mess. If I’m good on that day, I’m good, but I’m just ready to let the world see my truths. And whatever that looks like, whatever that outfit is, whatever that face is gonna do…whatever the hair is done to do. That’s just it.

4 LATINO ENTREPRENEURS SHARE TIPS FOR SUCCESS INSPIRED BY UNIQUE CULTURAL EXPERIENCES

BUSINESS

Passion and drive are key to starting any new business. However, personal experiences often provide foundational elements that ultimately support success. This is notable for four Latino entrepreneurs - Cecilia Panichelli and Federico Carrillo, Mike Alfaro and Julissa Prado - who say their culture is a key part of who they are and why their businesses have thrived. During Latino Heritage Month, Target celebrated the Latino community’s cultural influence and contributions by spotlighting these Latino-owned brands and founders and showing that Latino culture is more than meets the eye. Consider Argentinian immigrants Cecilia Panichelli and Federico Carrillo. A desire to share the culture and flavors of their home country with others is the reason they formed Cocina 54, a frozen empanada business that was founded in 2017. “We made sure to figure out a way to produce empanadas that still had fresh ingredients and a made-from-scratch recipe,” said Panichelli. “The culture was our biggest inspiration. To create a connection between what people in Argentina eat and what people in America eat, we married various ingredients together to create truly heritage-inspired flavors.”

4 LATINO ENTREPRENEURS..... | BRANDPOINT

Cocina 54 is one of more than 80 cross-category products being featured as part of the first-ever Latino Heritage Month product assortment, available now at Target. Imagined and designed by Latino team members, artists and creators, this year’s product assortment features apparel, accessories, beauty and more that highlights themes of family, Latina empowerment and Latino pride. If you’re an aspiring entrepreneur, Panichelli and Carrillo share their top tips for success: 1. Do not quit your day job immediately. Hard work makes you nimble and resilient. 2. Talk to other entrepreneurs in the industry and learn from them. 3. Remember to balance family needs and business needs. Another example of the Latino-owned brands and entrepreneurs featured in the collection is Mike Alfaro, creator of Millennial Lotería, a modern take on the classic Lotería Mexican bingo game. Born and raised in Guatemala City, Guatemala, Alfaro came to the U.S. alone. The first time he shopped in a Target store, he admits it felt “foreign and a bit scary.” Alfaro connected with Target at the LatinXpo, an event that helps Target explore new partnerships with diverse entrepreneurs and businesses. “I think about going back and seeing my game and it feels like home,” said Alfaro. “And if I had seen products that represented me [when I first immigrated to America], I would have felt less alone.” Alfaro is achieving his dreams and he wants to encourage others to dream big, too. His tips for entrepreneurs include: 1. Differentiate your product and make sure your consumers know what the difference is at first glance. 2. Take advantage of social media to test out different strategies and messaging. 3. Don’t be afraid to ask for suggestions from your customers or followers.

53

For Julissa Prado, her Mexican roots are always a personal and business influence, and it was a fundamental driver behind the creation of her brand, Rizos Curls. “The inspiration to create Rizos Curls was my own personal [hair] curl journey to learn how to love my natural curl texture,” said Prado. “Latino Heritage Month is every day for me to be honest. So much of the work I do and what motivates my business decisions are rooted in my culture. I am incredibly proud of my roots and family - these are what I love most about my life.” Prado’s top tips for success include: 1. Everything is negotiable. Challenge outdated rules and don’t be afraid to push back. 2. Make up in creativity what you lack in marketing dollars. Use social media to be a storyteller. 3. Be agile. As a small business you’re able to pivot faster than most larger businesses. These business owners credit much of their success to their Latino heritage and strive to uplift and inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs. They demonstrate that a drive for success is fueled by personal experience and cultural values. To learn more about these and other Latino entrepreneurs, you can visit Target’s Más Que Hub for inspirational moments of success and resilience from creators, team members and business owners through storytelling and art. You can also learn about Target’s investment of more than $1.1 billion in Latino-owned suppliers, media, strategic partnerships and organizations over the past five years to continue uplifting the community not only during Latino Heritage Month, but year-round. Keep Healthy for the Holidays

uring this year’s holidays, many families are looking forward to celebrating a closer-to-normal season. However, that means staying healthy and keeping all kinds of germs at bay, including seasonal cold and flu bugs. “With life getting back to normal, we are expecting a more severe cold and flu season than we encountered last year,” said Dr. Jennifer Caudle, family physician. “It’s important to both take preventative measures and stay prepared for keeping symptoms at bay. I recommend looking for over-the-counter medicines with active ingredients like dextromethorphan and guaifenesin, which help relieve both cough and chest congestion.” Practice good hygiene. Washing your hands has become a common refrain throughout the

pandemic because it’s a simple and effective way to keep germs away, whether they’re of the global pandemic variety or a common cold. As you’re out shopping and mingling this holiday season, you’re likely to come into contact with more germ-laden surfaces than usual. Shopping carts, doors and public restrooms are major culprits, so carry sanitizer and be sure to give your hands a thorough wash when you get home. Treat symptoms. While addressing the symptoms of an illness won’t necessarily make it go away, it can ease your discomfort while it runs its course. An option like Mucinex 12 HR Extended Release Tablets provides relief for 12 hours by helping thin and loosen mucus to relieve chest congestion. The tablets are also available in a DM formula, which provides relief for both wet and dry coughs.

KEEP HEALTHY FOR THE HOLIDAYS| FAMILY FEATURES

Protect your immune system. A healthy immune system helps your body fight off germs so you don’t get sick, or if you do come down with a cold or the flu, you may have a milder, shorter illness. Getting plenty of rest, staying well hydrated, eating well-balanced and nutrient-rich meals and getting plenty of regular physical activity can all help keep your body in good condition to fight off seasonal germs. Keep your medicine cabinet stocked. There’s hardly anything worse than waking in the middle of the night with a cough or sinus trouble and discovering your medicine cabinet is empty. Be proactive by restocking on overthe-counter basics to help keep your symptoms in check. It’s also a good idea to check the expiration dates of any medications you do have on hand and replace anything that is out of date. Be mindful of spreading germs. If you do get sick, you can take steps to protect your loved ones. If possible, stay home until your

symptoms have passed and you’re less likely to be contagious. Covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, or sneezing into your elbow if you don’t have a tissue, can be effective in preventing the spread of germs. Know when to consult a doctor. In most cases, minor cold symptoms don’t require a visit to the doctor (unless you think you may have been exposed to COVID-19 and need to arrange for testing). However, if symptoms don’t resolve within a week, grow worse in a short period of time or aren’t responding to over-the-counter medicines to ease your symptoms, it’s a good idea to schedule an appointment with your doctor or at least speak with a triage nurse for advice.
