FROM THE DESK OF Tawana Blassingame Founder & Editor in Chief
Welcome to the February 2020 issue of Queen Size Magazine. This month’s cover story speaks directly to everything that I believe in. When Catherine Ashly said I have an idea I want to pitch to you, naturally it was a yes. But when she gave me the background on her new campaign I was all in. I choose to B-Positive is the name of the campaign and it is something that I try to make a conscious effort to do daily. NOPE I don’t always get it right; but I do try. One of the things that I strongly dislike seeing is people being mean to each other. It’s a fact that we are not going to all agree on everything, or even get along for that matter. But it sucks when we cannot respect others’ opinions or beliefs, and then feel the need to be disrespectful. Particularly within this industry that we all work in together. My mom used to always tell my sister and me that “there are going to be days when you are going to have to fight the world together, there is no reason why you should fight each other at home”. OH! My mom is a wise woman. There are some things that we are told as children that we don’t understand until we are grown and have to go through some ish…. But in this industry that quote fits well. We are attacked for our size and over confidence every day; why on earth is it that damn hard NOT to attack each other? I appreciate the campaign and plan to do everything I can to support it. Let’s all try to make a conscious effort to be kind and positive to each other. Let’s learn to agree to disagree. And if you can’t do that, then unfriend and unfollow. Protect your energy and your space. Let’s make this hashtag go viral this year #ichoosetobpositive. Thank you all for continuing to support Queen Size Magazine. We would love to hear your feedback. Email us at queensizemagazine@gmail.com and let us know what you like, don’t like and/or want to see in future issues. We value your opinion. Be blessed and remember to be a blessing as well.

hen cold weather hits, it’s natural to seek comfort in a variety of forms: warm blankets, layers of sweaters and delicious, hearty meals. Winter is the perfect season for spending time indoors honing cooking skills to take your culinary creations to the next level.
Simple Recipes for Shorter Days
With less daylight hours during the winter, many people tend to get sleepy earlier. Quick weeknight dinner recipes are usually ideal, especially when they take only 30 minutes or so to prepare. Easy dishes are perfect for those nights when you want something savory and delicious, but you also want to get into pajamas and onto the nearest couch as soon as possible. Few things are better than a warm bowl full of flavor like this taste-tempting curry recipe bursting with caramelized onion and roasted garlic notes.

Opt for Seasonal Produce
While the days of peaches and watermelons may be over, dropping temperatures bring a slew of seasonal produce made for cool-weather cooking. Think winter squash, apples, root vegetables and cauliflower. Try using a seasonal food guide to learn what produce is in season in any state at any time of the year. Cooking with seasonal produce helps ensure your food is in peak form at its most nutritional and flavorful state.
Find Comfort in Your Favorite Foods
Almost nothing beats pasta and sauce on a chilly night. When craving warm and filling meals during winter, a quality, jarred pasta sauce like FarmToFork can add simple goodness to hearty dishes like Gnocchi with Hearty Mushroom Bolognese. Made with sustainably grown, vine-ripened tomatoes and fresh garlic, basil and onions, the sauce brings rich, distinctive flavor to a variety of cool-weather favorites from traditional pasta recipes to soups and oven bakes. During the season of giving, comfort and warmth can also be found in doing good for others, which is why FarmToFork supports Big Green, a national nonprofit organization that partners with low-income schools around the country to bring garden-based learning and food literacy curriculums to children.

Top wine serving tips Why the glass matters WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|FEBRUARY 2020 ISSUE
TOP WINE SERVING TIPS | BRANDPOINT
Wine connoisseurs know something even more important than facts about vintages and varietals: It makes a big difference how your wine is served. From the correct temperature to the glass you drink from, how any wine is presented can change the entire experience. And it’s not just about aesthetics - although a beautiful glass may enhance your visual experience, the size and shape of a wine glass can alter any wine’s aroma and taste, for better or worse. The size and shape of the glass affects not just how the wine responds to its environment (exposure to oxygen and temperature, for example), but how we drink it. The way you hold the glass, how you tilt your head (forward or back - consider a martini glass versus a wine glass), where your nose is centered as you sip and where on your tongue and palate the wine first hits can all impact your experience of the wine. What do you need to know so your guests will experience your wine at its very best? Here are some guidelines.
Red wines
In general, the best glasses to enhance the bigger and bolder flavors of most red wines should be taller and have a larger bowl than glasses meant for serving lighter or more delicate wines. Larger glasses allow a wine to breathe more and permit the wine’s flavors and aromas to develop more fully. For this reason, it’s also best to fill each glass only about one third full when serving red wines, to encourage more aeration.
White wines
The ideal glass for most white wines will be U-shaped, with a smaller bowl than when serving red wines. One of the reasons is that it helps prevent the wine from warming up too quickly, as whites are best served somewhat chilled. The more upright shape of the glass also allows aromas to be released sufficiently - without losing any aroma - for these lighter wines.

may not be at its best in any other glass. For example, Terlato Vineyards searched for the perfect glass to bring out the best in their fourth-generation family company’s Friuli Colli Orientali Pinot Grigio 2018. This Pinot Grigio is known for exceptional balance, complex, layered aromas and flavors with notes of ripe peach, apricot and pear, and a crisp, mineral finish. Because its special qualities were not brought out in just any wine glass, Bill Terlato and his daughter, Elise teamed up with Maximilian and Georg Riedel of the 300-year-old crystal company to develop a unique glass to optimize the flavors and aromas of their Pinot Grigio. In the eyes of the Riedel Company, wine glasses are not just about aesthetics, but are tools to help bring out the best in any wine. For Terlato Vineyard’s Pinot Grigio, they created a glass with a distinctly elongated bowl to heighten the mineral and fruity flavors of the wine. The narrower opening of the glass also helps the wine land in the mouth midpalate, where taste buds are more complex. This specially designed glass helps the wine taster “pick up on those little nuances,” observed Elise Terlato. “The mouth of the glass enhances the texture and layered complexities of the wine.”
Sparkling wines
When serving champagne, prosecco or other sparkling wines to your guests, flutes or a tulip shaped glass are recommended. These glass shapes allow the chilled wine to stay cooler longer. Whereas a wider glass would offer too much surface area, letting the delightful bubbles fizzle out more quickly. A narrower glass helps to preserve the carbonation of your sparkling wine longer. For wine aficionados interested in obtaining the specially designed Riedel Pinot Grigio glasses, you can purchase a bottle of Terlato Vineyard’s Friuli Colli Orientali Pinot Grigio 2018 from an independent retailer, or order the wine at a participating bar or restaurant - and then use a mailin rebate to get two of the glasses mailed to you, free of charge.

Even within the many varietals of reds or whites, however, there can be great differences that specially designed stemware is often created to enhance a specific wine that

Here are a few things that will keep you in control of your feminine health The vagina is a delicate ecosystem that must be maintained at a normal pH of 3.8-4.5, the same pH as beer, if you can believe it! Everyday events like blood with your period, sex, soaps, certain medications and the water in a douche can all elevate the natural vaginal balance, because those elements have a pH of 7.5 or 8. When the pH is disrupted, you might experience burning, itching or an unpleasant odor. What to do? OB/GYN, Mary Jane Minkin, M.D., offers the following tips. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and cranberry juice, as it’s good for the bladder, and the acidity helps balance pH levels to relieve UTI symptoms. Foods high in sugar can increase the risk of yeast infections. So, avoid processed foods, alcohol and sugary drinks, and eat more fruits, veggies, and whole grains to help prevent yeast issues and UTIs. Most vaginal odor is not the result of poor hygiene. The secret is to keep the vaginal pH balanced, instead of just masking the problem with scented soaps, fragrance sprays, irritating wipes and pads that can be harmful to delicate tissue. Over-the-counter RepHresh Gel does just that. It keeps the pH balanced to the normal pH and eliminates odor for up to three days. Lingering bacteria can cause odor too. If you douche, remember to balance pH immediately after with one application of RepHresh, or use a RepHresh Clean Balance kit that includes both a cleaning solution and pH balancer allin-one. Yeast infections are common because yeast tends to grow in warm, moist areas. Change out of wet bathing suits and tight exercise clothing right after that
run, bike or hike and when douching to cleanse the yeast, remember it can actually destroy the healthy pH balance. That’s why it’s important to restore normal pH right after douching. Symptoms of a yeast infection can include odorless and sometimes thick discharge, itching and burning. Many women think they have a yeast infection when they actually have bacterial vaginosis (BV), an increase of “bad” bacteria, usually caused by unbalanced pH. Symptoms of BV are often similar, but the discharge produced generally has an unpleasant odor. If you aren’t sure whether you have BV or a yeast infection, see your doctor for a proper diagnosis and solution. While there are yogurts that add probiotics to promote digestive health and immunity, no yogurts are shown to maintain vaginal health. RepHresh Pro-B is different from other probiotics, lactobacillus and acidophilus products because it is clinically shown to provide healthy probiotic lactobacillus that work to balance yeast and bacteria. With one capsule taken daily, you can help maintain vaginal flora in a normal healthy range. By remembering a few simple tips, you can stay healthy and decrease the risk of vaginal issues and unpleasant odor and itch. Mary Jane Minkin, M.D., is a clinical professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at the Yale University School of Medicine.

4 TIPS TO DRESS FOR SUCCESS AT WORK WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|FEBRUARY 2020 ISSUE
4 TIPS TO DRESS FOR SUCCESS AT WORK | STATEPOINT
In today’s workplace, many employers have abandoned strict dress code policies, providing employees with more flexibility to dress casually. In fact, 59 percent of American workers described their current employer’s policy as “business casual” or “casual,” according to a recent study from Randstad US. Although a more relaxed dress code gives you the creative freedom to express yourself, not everything may be appropriate for a work setting. Here is the fashion 411 on workplace attire today.
• Understand your company’s dress policy. If you’re unclear of your employer’s dress code policy, just ask your manager or HR. Thirty-eight percent of 25 to 35-year-olds say they’ve been asked to dress more professionally by their manager or HR, and 45 percent say they know someone who has been sent home from work for breaking dress code policies. Unclear policies may be the culprit, and no outfit is worth the risk -- or embarrassment -- of being sent home. Another tip is to simply take note of what people around you are wearing, especially those in senior-level positions. As the saying goes, dress for the job you want, not the job you have!
• Dress for comfort and performance.
Don’t be afraid to embrace your personal style, as long as it stays within your company’s guidelines. Sixty-three percent of younger workers (aged 18 to 35) say they actually prefer dressing up for work, as it boosts their confidence and performance. The definition of “dressing up” can vary from person to person, ranging from casual to conservative, depending on one’s taste.

than what their employees wear, so don’t feel pressured to break the bank in order to keep up with the workplace Joneses. Your expertise is more valuable than any sparkly set of cufflinks or a pair of heels will ever be. However, you can look great for less with a few smart strategies. Visit the Randstad US career resources portal for workplace fashion tips to “casually” rip the (office) runway at randstadusa. com/jobs/career-resources/personal-brand.
• Leave the weekend wardrobe at home. According to many U.S. employees, some things are still considered a bit too casual for the office. In fact, the survey found that the majority of Americans think ripped jeans and leggings are not appropriate, even in a casual office environment. Therefore, if you show up to work in ripped jeans, there’s a good chance (statistically speaking) that you won’t be making a great impression. The same goes for leggings -- sorry athleisure lovers!
For more tips on how you can make a good impression at work, visit www.randstadusa.com. “It’s great to show your personality and wear what you feel most confident in, though it’s always a best practice to be mindful of today’s cultural norms and what most people -- according to our survey -- feel is appropriate for the workplace,” says Traci Fiatte, CEO of non-technical staffing, Randstad US. “You want to be evaluated on your performance and what value you bring to your company, not just on your clothes.”

• Don’t break the bank. Fifty-five percent of managers agree they care more about performance

MAKING POSITIVITY YOUR FIRST CHOICE
27
written by Catherine Ashly
Body positivity is a social movement rooted in the belief that all human beings should have a positive body image, while challenging the ways in which society presents and views the physical body. The topic of Body positivity has triggered many hard discussions in the Plus Community. Some have led us to feel unsupported, targeted, and feeling excluded in the topic as a whole. While others feel they have found their voice alongside new friends that finally have someone they can relate to. Over the years, the discussion of weight and how to carry your body has caused such a riff, between the community that I have grown to love. It makes my heart hurt to witness it year in and year out. In 2015, I decided to take matters into my own hands by starting a movement with a new brand by the name of, PLussizemeplz (Plus Size Me Please). The mission, TO INCLUDE ANYONE, NO MATTER THEIR SHAPE, SIZE, SEXUAL ORIENATATION, RACE, OR GENDER. The only thing not welcome, NEGATIVITY! It’s BEEN A LONG 4 YEARS and over time I’ve found myself very drained with the continuous ugly battles that keep the negative vibes rolling within our community. I almost gave up on the brand all together this year. Between my health and family, I wanted to simply allow everyone to battle their differences out on their own. I didn’t feel like I was making a difference. Not large enough that I would be missed, AND THEN, “IT” happened. I attempted to plan my last/final Philadelphia Curve Weekend event, and the entire weekend I received nothing but love and support from people near and far. It CHANGED MY PERSPECTIVE ON MANY THINGS. I am making a difference and my efforts aren’t in vein. People, left my event inspired and uplifted. My mission was and is being accomplished. After my event weekend ended and enduring a very long traumatic summer, I took a small break but decided I would change the narrative of my brand a bit. I wanted to rebrand, and refocus on my why. I needed to recall why I started my brands as WHOLE. It wasn’t because I was trying to fit in, or be popular, nor was it to gain
recognition for my efforts. It was always about the impact and to shine a light on the positive things happening in the plus community. I needed to tap back into that, tap back into the reality of “my why”, and I suddenly received a new message, “I CHOOSE TO B-POSITIVE.” This message means a lot to me, so let’s break this down. Making a choice, something we do daily but don’t take ownership of the choices we tend to make. There is accountability in making choices and when the above statement is said, the expectation is for the reader to own their choice! TO “b” REPRESENTS the body and the body positive community. Its ok to simply “B” and allow for the negativity to roll off your shoulders. We make choices every day to do what’s best for us. In this community we choose every day, but how we choose to “B” affects others too! I want for people to be themselves and speak their mission but in love. Just because someone confronts you with negativity doesn’t mean our response needs to be in negativity as well. We CAN SPEAK TRUTH without hateful responses, which leads me to my last point! Positivity, do I expect people to be filled with “CARE BARE” love every day? Of course not… but the message is meant to encourage people to think before they speak. When you make a choice, you are owning it. I’m challenging people to own their choice to b positive! In 2020 I want us all to implement self-care and love by asking people to love intentionally. Love your bodies, love yourself and love those around you! Forgive and protect your space by creating boundaries. Choosing to only allow positive vibes in your space brings new perspective on a new level! Sometimes the things that bring us together can also be the very thing that divides us apart. This year let’s stop complaining so much about what isn’t challenging and actually make changes in ourselves. Let’s agree to disagree and move forward in love and leave the hate. This message is my attempt to connect us more, and support more. This is my way of publicly saying, I’m not ready to throw in the towel just yet, because we have more work to do! So Please… STAND with me as I will Continue to be accountable for myself and my actions. Today, “I choose to b positive! “

30 QSM: CLAP CLAP BRAVO!!! I swear on everything, you just spoke my heart. You said everything of what I have been feeling down to a T! WOW… You posed the question of “why” to yourself; this has been a huge question to me as of lately. What are we doing, and Why are we doing it? It kind of feels like our overall message is getting loss. What are your thoughts? Catherine: The MESSAGE is getting lost unfortunately within the banter and anger of the crowds. Everyone wants to be right so badly that they refuse to take a step back and see what the real issues are. The solution is compassion understanding and peace. Not attacking each other each making a bigger divide, we look foolish. QSM: I can’t help but to feel that a lot of the riff on how we should and should not carry ourselves, or how we should dress is coming from our own. Do you feel that way as well? Catherine: I think it is, and it’s so hurtful. I personally wear what I want for my liking, so I don’t seek validation from others. However, the push back and negativity that accompanies how people dress their bodies is starting to get ridiculous. Honestly, It’s none of my business, my only concern is how appropriate it is for the occasion. QSM: Can you talk about some of the negativity you’ve seen that you previously mentioned? Catherine: Most of it is subliminal, some not so much. It’s always a jab here, gossip there, she shouldn’t have worn that. Small competitions between models and bloggers that lead to unspoken battles on the “interwebs.” I think it’s more linked to misunderstandings and lack for communications or maybe even jealously. One thing that we can agree to is, no matter the situation what is meant for us, will be for us. So jealously, envy and mean behavior isn’t even called for. We really have to do better and learn to clap for others in their winning season, and speak life over people not hate. QSM: Let’s talk about the overall campaign “I CHOOSE TO B-POSITIVE.” When these words came to you, how did you decide on how you were going to deliver the message? Catherine: The words came to me as a way of creating a positive message that people would remember. I actually stumbled upon a similar campaign done by FranknTheCity. I called him up about it and giggled about how great minds think alike. Our messages are slightly different but both impactful. QSM: Your campaign seems to fall a lot within the realm of self-care. Unfortunately, when people think of self-care they think more on the lines of spas and vacations. But creating a positive space for yourself is number one in my opinion. What say you? Catherine: I say self-care is whatever you deem to be care for you. As long as it’s not harming yourself or others. For some it can be a spa day, for others it can be a work out at the gym. For me currently, it’s a nap lol! QSM: LOL! Can you tell us a bit about the models in the campaign and why you chose these particular models? Catherine: I hand-picked these models because they have always been so kind and supportive of my brands and missions. Every time I see them, they are making a great impact in the community by supporting their peers and loving on friends. I wanted to highlight a few of them, though there are so many more to name, like FrankntheCity who couldn’t come up that day, but you get my drift. My brand is meant to talk more about the good more than the negative. That also includes clapping for my peers publically. QSM: I love the fact that you did not only choose woman for your campaign. Most of the time, our men get left out of our messages so that was nice to see. Was that your vision as well? Catherine: Yes, my vision was to create a campaign that highlights African Americans that are positive! I am always diverse in my campaigns because I am an inclusive brand, at the same time, my supporters are 80% Black AND THAT MATTERS! We as a community
WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|FEBRUARY 2020 ISSUE
deserve to see more African American Plus Positive covers! Specifically embracing each other through Love! I think the more we see it the more we can heal. I want all people to be involved with the idea of self-love and self-care, but I feel like we need to show more images of black unity in our community as well, Male and Female. QSM: Your last Philadelphia Curve Weekend was incredible and inspiring. Although I was not able to attend all of the events, QSM still had some representation throughout the weekend. The experience that you provided was completely empowering. People are still talking about it. Even though I know the answer to this question (because I have been where you were many times) why leave it all behind? Catherine: Its hard, to admit that I wanted to, but it’s also important for people to know where I stand. I refuse to contribute to the negativity. I know it was empowering and inspiring but its sooooooooo much work, and people think money is thrown your way. NOT THE CASE. I was really sick this year and the support was a real fight. I truly didn’t think I made the impact that I did until I witnessed it myself. I had to clear out the negativity and restart my mission for myself all over again. Will PCW continue forever? I can’t say that, but for NOW… I’m on a mission to change lives and that isn’t easy. For now, I’m still in it for the ride. lol QSM: Having just put on a major production myself, I completely understand it. You talked about changing the narrative of your brand refocusing on your why. What will be different in your message? Catherine: The message is to simply be a positive role model, but uplifting inspiring and supporting the best I can. I sponsor all year long from my own pocket and want to continue to do so. I am reclaiming the main focus of the brand by cleansing my own spirit and starting over “On purpose In purpose.” QSM: What do you hope to see come out of this campaign and how do we keep it going? Catherine: I hope to see people join the cause and spread the word about the brand as a whole. I will be selling tee shirts and the support from the sales will go back into community via sponsorships. It’s like supporting a cause that will continue to support you. Though I will still send my money to those that are making a positive impact, this also allows the community to join me in it! I can admit that I can’t do this alone. If we want positive events, we have to support missions with purpose. QSM: What else do you want people to know about the campaign? Catherine: That change starts with us. I hope this campaign inspires and shines a light on these individuals that get over looked sometimes. QSM: What can we look out for from Catherine and the PLussizemeplz brand? Catherine: You know I don’t give away any secrets…. You have to stay tuned GIRLLLLL! LOL QSM: Well lady, it is no secret that I admire you and your entire existence. You have inspired and supported ME the QSM brand; I can never say thank you enough. In all you do, I wish you nothing but great success. We too will join in the cause! Thank you for this. Please do let everyone know where they can follow you at. Catherine: I appreciate your constant support and love! You are amazing in all you do…. Keep going mama! We need everyone to work together to be better people. I think having the discussion Is A GREAT START! Thanks AGAIN for having me. Treonie A. Oliver My name is Treonie Amber Oliver and I’ve been pursuing my modeling career for 4 years. I’ve also done pageantry for about 2 years. I have a strong passion for plus size fashion modeling and pageantry. I feel that this allows me to have the best of both worlds. Expressing my fierce side when modeling, but balancing it with pageantry, showing my classy poised sophisticated side. The start of my modeling career was when I was introduced to “Butterfly Rhythm” directed by Detras Powell. Butterfly Rhythm is an empowerment program that improves self-esteem, self-confidence, self-respect and most importantly selflove! As part of Butterfly Rhythms course, I entered the “Face of Kurvacious” modeling competition directed by Tiff Scott, which was my very first modeling competition. Having runway coach extraordinaire Jeannie Ferguson showing me how to perfect my walk, let me know I was in the right place! While in college I interned for Plus Designer “Monif C.” and when I saw her on BET’s “Rip the Runway” that’s when my fire for plus size fashion and modeling ignited. After coming in top 10 for the competition, I knew I had something special. I then went onto being a fit model for designer Coretta Divine’s “Flavors of Fullness” clothing line. I’ve modeled in many shows, from upcoming designers, local town shows, church fashion shows, and even Ashley Stewart. Twice! I was later introduced to the “Ms. Full Figured USA Pageant” in 2018 by Ms. Andrene Williams CEO/Founder of Unique Blend Models. She directed the Caribbean division as I represented Jamaica. Here is when it all changed. I learned the true difference between modeling and pageantry from Theresa Randolph CEO of the “Ms. Full Figured USA” brand. Because it wasn’t my season, I did not win the Ms. Full Figured USA Caribbean crown. When the pageant came to my home state of New Jersey I competed again. With all the lessons I’ve learner over the years as well as trials and errors, I needed to see my growth! I needed to prove to myself that I’ve gotten up stronger and that I can do anything I put my mind, body and spirit to. Getting a new chance at being a pageant queen and proving myself to myself and others was the goal. I worked hard, I prayed, I studied, and I kept my eyes on the prize and I came out victorious! Because I stayed true to myself and my passion I came out on top! I am now the MS Full Figured NJ Plus Queen as well as MS. Photogenic NJ 2019 Queen and Ms. Full Figured NJ MVP!

BEAUTY AND FASHION QSM: Congratulations on winning Miss Full Figured USA NJ Plus. I always like to start from the beginning. I like to get to know who people were before they became who they are. Tell me about life for you as a child. Treonie: Life for me as a child was great. I was fortunate to grow up in a 2-parent household and being an only child, I had to find ways to entertain myself. I would always play dress up and play in my mother’s make-up and strut around the house in her clothes. I was always the little girl who carried a purse and had the matching headband bangles and shoes. As a kid my family would call me “Bag Lady” because I always had a bag, sometimes it would be empty or full of junk, but I had to have it. I have a very close-nit family and we’re all pretty stylish, so being a young fashionista was embedded in me as a kid. QSM: Is anyone else in your family working in, or have worked in the fashion industry? I am curious about when the fashion bug bit you. Treonie: No. No one in my family works in the fashion industry. We are fashionable but I am the only one trying to pursue a career in the industry. As I stated before playing dress up in my mothers’ clothes was my thing. Every time I went to my grandmother’s house, I would always try on her jewelry from her jewelry box. Sometimes she would let me keep certain pieces. I’ve always loved fashion. I went to college and majored in fashion design and received my A.O.S. degree. While interning for plus designer Monif C, I knew I wanted to model. Assisting with photoshoots and seeing how the models felt in front of the camera made me curious to know what it felt like, so I believe that’s when the modeling bug bit. QSM: What challenges would you say you have faced so far on your journey? Treonie: The challenges I’ve faced so far on my journey are all self-inflicted to be honest. I sometimes have my days when I don’t feel as secure as I should, and I tend to doubt myself, but when I talk to God, I snap back into reality. I know I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, so I keep pushing. QSM: If you could get personal training from one person in this industry who would it be and why? Treonie: I would like to get personal training from Liris Crosse. I chose her because when I saw her on Project Runway, I was amazed. She was the model yes, but because of her stage presence I saw past the garment. You could see the passion in her eyes and if her walk could talk it would say “This is me! I am here! So receive me! And I heard it loud and clear. That’s how I want my presence to be seen and heard. QSM: What is the difference between modeling and pageantry for you? Treonie: To me the difference between the two are: modeling your selling the clothes your advertising the garment and the designer. When modeling you can spice up your walk with special twists and turns, but with pageantry you’re representing yourself. You must give eye contact and walk with poise and grace. A model doesn’t have to impress a panel of judges, you have to impress potential customers. When in pageantry you have to impress the judges with your personal style, your smile and with eye contact.

MODEL SPOTLIGHT | TREONIE A. OLIVER QSM: If you had to choose one over the other, which would it be and why? Treonie: I’d choose modeling, that’s because you can be versatile based on the garment. When modeling you can show a little more personality and still be graceful and have poise. I believe you have a little more fun modeling. Pageantry is more serious because you’re representing a different type of brand. QSM: What is your platform and what do you plan on doing during your reign? Treonie: My plat form is “Anti-Fat Shaming”, and with my reign I will use my title to let all women know that we are perfect in the bodies God designed for us. I want to stand up for women like me who are bullied about their size and weight. I would want to first help the women find out who they are. I’d help them find their strengths and help them build their confidence. I want an army of anti-fat shaming queens in the world, who are unapologetic about their size and are true to themselves. We would let people who fat shame know that we are who we are, and love who we are and if you have a problem with that you can be dismissed! QSM: Has the fact that you won sunk in yet? What were you feeling when they called your name? Treonie: Yes, it has. Sometimes I still can’t believe it. I have my crowns, sashes, and trophies as the center piece on my living room table and every time I come in and leave the house it’s a constant reminder of who I am, what I’ve overcome and where I’m going. I feel so empowered and blessed to be a part of something so beautiful and powerful! When they were calling out the winners, I was so nervous. I knew God had made all this possible for me and I prayed that this was my season because I wanted this so bad. I wanted that crown. When they called first runner up my heart was pumping, I thought I had lost, but I remembered that it was “runner up” and there has to be a winner. There has to be a queen! I realized I was the only person left in my category and they didn’t announce the Ms. Full Figures USA NJ Plus Queen so then I knew I had it. When they said my name, I had the biggest cool-aid smile on my face. I was so thankful and proud of myself. My family and friends were there cheering me on, it was perfect! QSM: What three things about yourself that you think you need to work on most? Treonie: I feel that I procrastinate at times, I have my moments when I lose confidence feel a sense of doubt, and I feel that I need to have a stronger social media presence.
41
QSM: What do you currently do for a living? Treonie: I currently work in customer service at Fabuwood Cabinetry Corp. in Newark NJ QSM: How do you balance your life with all the things you do? Treonie: I feel that I balance everything very well for now. I know that in the future it’ll be different. The stage I’m in now is only the beginning and because I am the Ms. Full Figured USA NJ Plus Queen, I have a job to do and I’m ready to work and grow. QSM: What do you think of the progress of our plus fashion industry? HONESTLY Treonie: I feel that there has been tremendous progress in our industry. We have so many designers and brands from big to small that cater to full figured women right now. In the past it was hard for me to find sexy flattering clothes for my figure. In today’s market it’s easier. The only issues I have now is what to buy instead of who to buy from. QSM: If you could change two things in the industry what would they be? Treonie: I wouldn’t change anything. I need to be a part of the industry and see it full on to know if something should be changed. So far, I know it’s challenging but nothing worth fighting for is easy to obtain. You must have tough skin and an elite level of drive in any industry you’re a part of. QSM: Where do you see yourself in the next five years? Treonie: In the next 5 years I see myself being signed to a major modeling agency living my dream and taking care of my family. I’d continue to use my platform to inspire those like me to keep pushing and until your dreams come true and then some! QSM: What is the best advice you have gotten so Far? Treonie: The best advice I’ve gotten so far is if plus modeling is my dream and my passion, I must continue to fight for what is and what will be mine. I must keep God first in everything I do and ask him to order my steps in life. I must thank Him for the ups and downs that life throws at me because it’s all a part of a test for the next blessing. QSM: Congratulations once again Treonie. We will be watching. Please provide your contact information for everyone. Treonie: I can be reached on Facebook @ Treonie A. Oliver, Instagram @ ItsTreonie and my direct email is treonie.oliver@ yahoo.com
QSM: Who are YOUR plus icons? Modeling or pageantry Treonie: My plus icons are Instagram Models “Charisma Monroe” “Miss Diva Kurves” and Fashionnova Curve and Pretty Little Things ambassador “NAO”. They are confident in themselves and they embody what an unapologetic plus model/queen is. They inspire me to keep doing what I’m doing because if you keep working towards your dreams and ignore the hate, you’ll be exactly who you want to be if not better and live out your dreams.

or many, traveling offers an opportunity to disconnect from the everyday and experience new places and cultures. With the beginning of a new decade, it is the perfect time to start deciding your next travel adventures. When booking your future destinations, consider these spots and tips recommended by travel expert and Bank of America ambassador, Lee Abbamonte, the youngest American to visit every country plus the North and South Poles.
England, Germany, Scotland, Azerbaijan and more
While technically more than one place, these locations have one thing in common: Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Euro 2020. The international soccer event marks the first time the games will be held across the continent in 12 host cities. “The year is a big one for sports,” Abbamonte said. “From sporting events in Europe to Japan, it is a fun year for travel and to enjoy once-in-a-lifetime experiences.”
Australia
From its deserts to tropical beaches, Australia is a beautiful country to explore. While many people might be familiar with the Sydney Opera House and the unique wildlife, there are many hidden gems in Australia. “I’ve been to Australia 10 times and I still can’t get enough,” Abbamonte said. “One of my favorite cities is Melbourne. While it’s one of the largest cities in Australia, the heart of the city is hidden and secretive. It comes to life when you visit the alleys, laneways and arcades. The vibrant city has so much to offer: cafes, a unique street culture and street art.”
New Zealand
If you are going to New Zealand for the first time, Abbamonte recommends boogie boarding down the sand dunes, hiking up a volcano and visiting the Moeraki Boulders. However, if you are really interested in getting the blood pumping, take a leap from Nevis Bungy near Queenstown. It is among the highest bungy jumping experiences in the world, measuring 440 feet.
Mexico
“Mexico City has two of my favorite things – great food and sports,” Abbamonte said. “The street tacos are to die for, and I love going to soccer games at Estadio Azteca.” In 2020, there will be many festivals to explore. The city is a cultural hub with music, theater, dance and food events throughout the year. While experiencing the festivities, it is also an opportune time to take a step back and enjoy Chapultepec Park.
Brazil
One of Abbamonte’s favorite waterfalls is Iguazu Falls located on the border of Brazil and Argentina. While Iguazu Falls might be well known, the falls themselves are truly unique. The waterfall system consists of 275 falls that stretch over approximately 1.68 miles. The Devil’s Throat is the tallest fall with a drop of more than 262 feet. Melbourne Victoria, Australia
While traveling internationally can be fun and exhilarating, there are also places throughout the United States that offer memorable activities:
Scottsdale, Arizona
If you enjoy being outdoors, Scottsdale is an ideal place to visit. There are many trails to explore in Camelback Mountain, Papago Park and Hole in the Rock. After hiking, follow Abbamonte’s example and golf at The Short Course at Mountain Shadows. “Scottsdale has some of the most beautiful sunsets in the States, and from The Short Course at Mountain Shadows, I get to enjoy the view while practicing my swing,” he said.
Boston, Massachusetts
“I love sports, so I visit Boston regularly for the professional games,” Abbamonte said. “I’m also fortunate that Boston is a beautiful city I can enjoy along the way.” Boston is one of the oldest cities in the country. Founded in 1630, Boston is filled with history, museums and universities. If you are interested in a more unique attraction, check out the Warren Anatomical Museum, which is one of the last of its kind in the United States.
Portland, Oregon
WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|FEBRUARY 2020 ISSUE
What makes Portland unique are the bizarre and wonderful things you can do when you visit. For
example, you can try bone marrow ice cream, stop by Mill Ends Park (the world’s smallest park) or attach your wish to The Wishing Tree. “Portland is absolutely beautiful,” Abbamonte said. “It has a bit of everything – restaurants, bars, parks – and I enjoy the people watching. Portland has some of the nicest people while maintaining an edgy vibe.”
Tampa, Florida
Tampa might be known for its spring break party scene, but it has so much more to offer. For example, the city’s zoos and aquariums provide opportunities to interact directly with animals. Then you can take a break at Clearwater Beach, which is known for its soft, white sand and calm waters.
Santa Barbara, California

is Melbourne. While it’s one of the largest cities in Australia, the heart of the city is hidden and secretive. It comes to life when you visit the alleys, laneways and arcades. The vibrant city has so much to offer: cafes, a unique street culture and street art.”
