FROM THE DESK OF Tawana Blassingame Founder & Editor in Chief

Welcome to the November 2019 issue of Queen Size Magazine. As we are gearing up for The Inaugural Full Figured Industry Awards, I wanted to share some thoughts with you all. Don’t ever think that you are too small to dream big. When I first spoke with my uncle about four years ago regarding this big dream of mine to start an award show, he challenged me and asked me why not. I had a hundred answers on why I didn’t think I could do it. But for every reason I gave on why I could not, he gave me two on how I could and why I should. Fear will prevent you from living your best damn life. I was afraid because I thought “what if people don’t come”, “what if people thought I was crazy”, “what if I am out of my damn mind for thinking I could pull this off”? So many what ifs, but the biggest what if that frightened me was “what if this thing is a success”? Fear of success is just as bad as the fear of failure. They will both leave you stagnant. Many of you are afraid that your dreams will require too much work. Afraid to stick your neck out there and reveal the best parts of yourself. I have learned that EVERYONE IS NOT GOING TO BE SUPPORTIVE and that you cannot take it personal nor should you expect. For every ten people that won’t support you, there are about a hundred or so that will. Go be great…… As with every issue, I truly thank each and every person that had a hand in making Queen Size Magazine possible. And on behalf of myself and Queen Size Magazine, I would like to thank all of our readers; without you we would not still be here. We would love to hear your feedback. Email us at queensizemagazine@gmail.com and let us know what you like, don’t like and/or want to see in future issues. We value your opinion.

FIND SOME TIME FOR YOURSELF

5 self-care tips to improve your well-being

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|NOVEMBER 2019 ISSUE

Between hectic schedules, ever-growing to-do lists and caring for others, it can be easy to put self-care on the backburner. Committing to a healthy diet, getting adequate sleep, reducing stress, exercising regularly and unplugging from your devices can help keep you healthy, both mentally and physically. Consider these self-care ideas from the sleep experts at Mattress Firm to help bolster your wellbeing.

NOURISH YOURSELF

While eating well may seem like an obvious self-care tip, it’s not always easy to change your eating habits or replace fast food and sweet indulgences with healthier options. However, properly nourishing your body with the right foods, like fish, leafy green vegetables and berries, can help you maintain a healthy weight, reduce your risk for diseases such as diabetes, improve your memory and reduce inflammation, among other short- and long-term benefits.

GET A GOOD NIGHT’S REST

Getting a proper night’s sleep – most experts recommend 7-9 hours for the average adult – can have a positive impact on how you feel both mentally and physically. Having both the proper routine – limiting caffeine and sugar intake before bed and reducing distractions such as TV or smartphones – and the right mattress can be key to ensuring your bedroom is the sleep oasis you need for quality rest. If you need help when it comes to selecting a mattress, the experts at a retailer like Mattress Firm can help you find the right mattress based on your sleep position or aches and pains from a wide selection of mattress sizes, features and accessories that won’t break the bank.

PRACTICE RELAXATION TECHNIQUES

Whether you have a few spare minutes or an entire afternoon of free time, finding a quiet place to relax and practice meditation or yoga can help you reduce stress and anxiety, become more self-aware and create a sense of calmness during even the busiest of days. Try setting up a secluded area in your home (or office) where you can concentrate on your practice and really listen to yourself.

UNPLUG AND UNWIND

With 24/7 access to the internet, social media and television, it can be easy to create bad habits associated with the always-connected, smartphone-obsessed world. However, screens – and the blue light they emit – have been proven to negatively impact sleep and mental performance. Setting aside some time – aim for a couple hours in succession – each day to unplug from your devices and their distractions can lead to better sleep, productivity, emotional wellness and creativity.

MAKE SURE TO MOVE

While it’s important to take care of yourself mentally, taking care of your body can be just as important to provide peace of mind. Finding time each day to get in at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise, whether it’s a full-blown workout, a walk around the neighborhood with your dog or a bike ride to a favorite destination, can boost your mood, reduce stress and anxiety, and help keep your waistline trim. Find a regimen that works for you, be it multiple short active periods or one long gym session, and make it part of your daily routine for an easy way to boost both your physical and mental wellbeing.

COOL WEATHER, COOL LOOKS Tips and tricks for styling top accessory trends Cooler temperatures mean it’s time to change up your wardrobe. While cozy attire, like a great pair of jeans and a favorite sweater, will always be in style, you can keep any outfit on trend by using accessories strategically.

with designs in deep jewel tones. Rich and regal, jewel tone colors are saturated hues that resemble specific gemstones. These colors include sapphire blue, emerald green, ruby red, amethyst purple and citrine yellow.

The experts at Jewelry Television (JTV) share the top trends and tricks for using jewelry to enhance your outfit and reflect your one-of-a-kind style:

Jewel tones look great against monochromatic materials such as leather and suede. Layer multiple jewel tones or focus on a single hue for your jewelry ensemble and you’ll get the perfect juxtaposition for standout style

Trend 1: Jewel tones Elevate your cool weather wardrobe

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|NOVEMBER 2019 ISSUE

COOL WEATHER, COOL LOOKS| BRANDPOINT Trend 2: Overstated bling Be the center of attention with larger-than-life looks, such as over-sized necklaces and bold rings. Statement jewelry is hot during the cool weather months, and comes in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. Have a minimalist outfit? Statement pieces are a simple way to add fabulous flair. Keep in mind, with statement jewelry, a little goes a long way. To maximize your look, keep other jewelry to a minimum so your statement piece really pops. For example, a large bib necklace of woven crystals and pearls is the ideal way to enhance a basic blazer and can be complemented with simple stud earrings to complete your look.

Trend 3: Linear and lengthening Show off your subtle style with elongated earrings and necklaces with Y-necks. The fastening technique for elongated necklaces is what makes them stand out from other necklaces. Unlike the traditional clasps, these are fastened by threading one end through the other or by simply tying a knot in the chain. The versatility of these unique necklaces makes them the ideal complement for layered looks. As you put together an outfit, think thin to thick. For instance, start with a tank or basic tee and a Y-necklace. Then add a cardigan or jean jacket to keep the chill at bay. On those really cold days,

9

focus on elongated earrings and finish with a pashmina or infinity scarf. Layering allows for versatility throughout the day as the temperature changes while still being stylish.

Trend 4: Nature inspired Feel the spirit of Mother Nature and embrace your inner bohemian style with nature-inspired jewelry and accessories. Designs that feature dainty feathers and bold earth tones really reflect this trend. Wear them and you’ll quickly discover they become a conversation starter among friends and coworkers. An easy way to try the nature trend is to add green crystal jewelry pieces to an outfit. For a boho-chic look, consider natural stones such as beautiful blue turquoise for necklaces, rings and more. Any accessory that reflects the environment is a great addition to your wardrobe, including designs featuring leaves, birds and butterflies. To find jewelry featuring these trends and more online, visit www.jtv.com. Cristy Pratt In one of my daily perusals through Facebook, I came across this video of what appeared to be a woman changing her clothes in the street. Naturally I had to go and watch it because I wanted to know why this woman is in the street changing and everyone around her is smiling and recording. It didn’t appear to be one of “those” videos where she was getting naked. So I took a closer look and was even more intrigued. The woman was actually showing the many different ways to wear this one dress. My mind was blown; why hadn’t I heard of this before and where can I now get one? So I had to reach out and learn about the story behind it. Meet Cristy Pratt of Morph Clothing. Cristy is a Celebrity Fashion Designer and Entrepreneur who is responsible for designing this groundbreaking eco-friendly capsule dress that can be worn over 60 different stylish ways. It takes on the challenge of suiting any body type or size and being the “go-to” piece from casual daytime wear to evening formal wear. This truly is one dress for all because Morph transcends generation, size, race, and gender. The handmade dress has strut down the red carpet with stars like Mona Scott-Young, has been a huge hit with other celebrities such as H.E.R., Queen Naija, Lisa Raye and MC Lyte; and has caught the attention of media outlets such as BET, MTV, Skirt Magazine, Lowcountry Live plus many more.

WHO’S THAT GIRL A talented girl but fear was her demise A singer in the chorus, a flutist and saxophonist, a girl of the arts. And with all that she could never grasp a sense of who she was so, She looked for validation within others, battled with her negative thoughts. Cared too much about what other people thought of her. A girl who used to be 265lbs, unhappy and unhealthy. A girl who was insecure and depressed. A girl who didn’t know her worth and mimicked what the world might have wanted her to be. It took strength to hold her head up high, courage to be her, a reality check to love herself, and understanding to accept her identity. She was ready to blossom, physically and mentally. Changed what she didn’t like and embraced what she couldn’t. And through the obstacles of this thing called life, she found the beautiful woman that always lived within her. Who that girl used to be isn’t the woman she is today.

That woman is Fanila Alexandre a smart individual who’s continually growing and the art of fashion and wanting to be model added to that growth. I enjoyed exploring different looks, all while expressing who I am and challenging myself to be completely transparent. Daydreaming of one day walking on the runway and smiling in front of the camera was a daily reminder of who I strive to be; so much so that I started looking into a community or organization that feed my interest. In 2014 I volunteered for Full Figured Fashion Week and in 2015 I landed a position as the personal assistant to The Faces of FFFWeek. Following that I have volunteered and been an active participant in all things curvy like NYFW Plus, multiple castings, events, and workshops. I had the opportunity to network and met a great group of people within the plus community whom I am still friends with till this day. In 2018 I decided to take modeling seriously, I entered in the competition for the search of the 2019 Face of Queen Size Magazine. Although I didn’t win, I became a house model along with an amazing group of ladies. I walked for some great designers like Nayburhood KoolKat clothing in Fashion Forward, Curvy AF Fashion Experience in NYFW, Bobby Stone and Lola Pierre The New Old School Fashion Show, as well as Tammy Vaughn in Brooklyn Fashion Academy’s Fashion Show. I was just getting into the groove of things when in May of this year I got into a horrible car accident that knocked me unconscious, I could have died. To say my life flashed before my eyes is cliché, but it did. A broken jaw, several lacerations and ugly stiches that disfigured my face, along with a few missing teeth were enough injures for me to believe that modeling was a dream that fell short. This couldn’t be real; this was my face, my smile was my signature, how I could I ever come back from this? With a great support system by side I was able to turn my negative thoughts off and shift that energy to concentrate on my healing process. I couldn’t allow myself to dive headfirst into a depressive slumber. Here I am now four months later healing, smiling better than ever and embracing my scars; allowing it to be my story. Outside of modeling, I work at a Psychiatric facility and during my free time I love traveling, spending time with my family and friends, mentoring young girls who struggle with self-image, and attending praise and worship at my church any chance I get. I am also in the process of obtaining my third degree, a master’s in Social Work, specializing in Palliative Care; a field that is necessary and rewarding. My goal is to continue making strides in all aspects of my life and helping others progress as well. I’m honored to have had the opportunities presented to me thus far and I’m looking forward and ready to embark on the adventures to follow. SHADÉ Y. ADU Digital Brand Strategist Bestselling Author International Speaker mental health is essential to your self-care. Sometimes while in a relationship, we can lose ourselves. Do you have any advice for those trying create balance between their relationship and personal development? Make sure that you are making time for each other. Be present, intentional, and honest with your significant other. Nurture all relationships that you want to grow. It can’t be business/career 100% of the time, all of the time. You have to figure out what works for the both of you. It might require some juggling in the beginning, but if the person is worth it, you both will figure it out. Also, include that person in your personal development journey.

Carpe Denim, Seize the Day! Think about your favorite pair of jeans. What are some words you would use to describe them? Denim is strong, durable, flexible, diverse in use and accommodating to change. Each year, many of us make New Year Resolutions to change for the better. Well, here is your check in! Are you still focused on your goals and engaged? Are you being your best version of yourself? When thinking of self-love, one cannot help but to incorporate self-care. To help better understand how we can take control of our daily lives and be most productive, we reached out to author and brand coach Shade Y. Adu for advice. From this interview we hope to ignite the same level of consistency and longevity possessed by your favorite pair of jeans, by delivering insight on how you can sew these qualities into your own lifestyle. Ms. Shade Adu, can you provide some insight on who you are and what you do? I’m a digital brand strategist, speaker, doctoral candidate, and world traveler. I am on a mission to help entrepreneurs develop, market, and monetize their businesses and personal brands online and offline. I work primarily with women entrepreneurs, coaches, speakers, and authors who desire to develop an additional income stream through creating digital products. I ultimately, want to make the world a better place and I know that it will happen through women accumulating wealth. How would you describe self-care? What would you say to a person struggling to overcome life obstacles? What are some steps to take to tap into one’s inner strength? Self-Care is essential to living in this stressful world. Self-preservation can include, spa days, stay-cations, massages, or just taking 10 minutes out of your day to meditate. If you are struggling to overcome life’s obstacles, consider giving yourself permission to take a personal day for yourself. Take a break. Take the cap off and put the oxygen mask on yourself first. You are no good to no one if you are not a whole person first. The world need’s less broken people. Visiting your social media, great page by the way, you posted a quote, “Of course motivation is not permanent. But then, neither is bathing; but it is something you should do on a regular basis” –Zig Ziglar. What are some ways you’d recommend for a person to empower a friend who has lost motivation? How can one support building back their friend’s confidence without being too abrasive? You are a torch and part of your journey in life is to ignite someone else’s fire, when they begin to dim. You have to bathe in motivation and inspiration daily. Here are some of the ways that I re-inspire myself: I read inspirational books, listen to videos on YouTube, pray, listen to gospel music, listen to trap/hip hop, celebrate other people’s wins. I talk to people. If you are going to motivate your friend whose lost their mojo, the first thing that you want to do is listen. Listen to what they are going through without judgement. Allow them room to have a pity party for themselves. Then, tell them to snap out of it. Remind them of their greatness. Recommend some of the things I mentioned above. One of the books that got me out of a rut was Miracle Morning for Entrepreneurs. This book comes with smoothie recipes for energy, and a daily routine that begins at 5AM. Drastically change your habits, and you will drastically change your life for the better. What are your thoughts about collaborating? Do you have advice for a person who wants to work with others, but is concerned about how (s)he can stay true to their own personal brand? Collaboration is key to getting to your next level. I collaborate frequently with fellow business owners and brands. Work with brands that are in alignment with your vision. All money isn’t good money. I have been burned a couple of times, but it’s a part of learning who you are and who you want to be. There have been times where I have collaborated with others and my brand got lost in the sauce. I had to bring myself back. Now I am more cautious, still open to collaboration, but it has to be on my own terms. When you build a personal brand, your audience looks up to you. You’ve built trust so you want to make sure that you keep that trust. How can the readers contact you? I see your book is available for pre-order. How can readers order a copy? You can find me online at @FutureDrShade on Twitter, Instagram, and Periscope. Also, on Facebook at facebook. com/shadeyadu shadeyadu.com. My book is available at journeytogreatnessbook.com.

Beyond Pinktober: My Breast Cancer is Beautiful!

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|NOVEMBER 2019 ISSUE

BEYOND PINKTOBER | LAWANDA “LALA FACES” SANYANG

46 year old Robin Jackson is living beyond Pinktober. We all know October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, however Robin’s journey demonstrate that Breast Cancer Awareness is every month. At the age of 41 during her normal self-breast exam she felt something, but wasn’t alarmed and waited until her next upcoming scheduled mammogram. She really wasn’t worried about anything because she had had a water cyst in the past and no history of breast cancer on her maternal side of family. Mammogram day came and doctors were concerned about the mass and at that point doctors decided to go ahead and do an MRI on both of her breasts and the news came back with masses in both breasts. The results revealed that she had two very aggressive forms of cancer and fast-growing in both breasts. She doesn’t recall the feelings of that she was going to die, she did not spend a lot of time in those emotions and she didn’t spend a lot of time asking why me. Instead she placed energy into fighting and living the best she could with the time that she had. When the news came she notified her immediate family and was not going to share with others. But God put it in her heart that “My Breast Cancer is Beautiful” and to live a beautiful life. When she posed on Facebook in front of the Breast Cancer center with her campaign that “My Breast Cancer is Beautiful” some of the survivors wanted to know why would she do that? She stated that she made the choice to make her journey beautiful. Because she had a choice to be the flyest chick on the oncology floor and to not let cancer take that away from her. Facebook as a way to Chroniclize her journey of

living out loud and telling her story. Doctors decided that she needed to have genetic testing to see if she had the BRCA Gene and it revealed eighty percent chance of having ovarian cancer. When all said and done she had undergone sixteen rounds of chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, two reconstructive breast surgeries with implants and ovarian surgery. Through it all she worked three days a week and never stopped believing that she was going to win. The best advice that Robin can offer others dealing with a challenging illness is; 1. Rally your troops. 2. Experience your feelings and realize people don’t know what to say to you. 3. It’s okay to experience your emotions if it takes you into a dark place but just don’t stay there. She lives to inspire and she is now four years in remission heading into the doctor’s magic number five. She calls herself the second chance chick developing a new normal. Robin continues to move forward with graduation plans with her Doctoral Degree in 2020 and she recently became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.

By now I know you’ve heard the buzz about PlusZone; the first brand to make a skin protectant specially dedicated to the plus size community. Zone Naturals line of friction prevention products fuses the brand’s proven approach to skin irritation solutions with their longstanding commitment to plus size community-driven conversations. I first learned of this product at an event I went to. I was a VIP ticket holder which meant we received “the goodie bags” (also known as SWAG bags). Normally, being a media company, I like to go through the bags and discuss some of the up and coming products. I initially saw the deodorant looking product and assumed it was just that, deodorant. So I put it back in the bag until I was ready to look it up on line and read more about it. Some time had gone by before I picked the bag back up, which was in the summer, and I found the product. Now by this time I was hearing the buzz about the product (that I forgot I had in my possession) and decided that I needed to try it out. I could not have found that product at a better time because the hot summer days had the inside of my thighs pretty uncomfortable. It is a product that I now use pretty often, even as it is getting cooler. It just provides so much more comfort.

“When we opened up conversations with the plus community about chafing and chub rub two years ago, practically no one wanted to talk about it. People were embarrassed to talk about it.” CEO/Founder of Zone Naturals, Joe Freeman recalls. “We’re thrilled to see how the conversation has evolved since then. For the last couple of years, PlusZone has proudly supported the plus community at events, conventions and celebrations of all sizes, including being a title sponsor at the Plus Strut 5K in Atlanta, and we’ve been amazed to see first-hand as chub rub went from a taboo topic of conversation to where it is today.” “Throughout these discussions, we’ve formed open communications with some of the community’s strongest thought leaders, who have been transparent with us about plus size people’s desires for high-quality skin products that solve real-world problems like chafing.” Freeman continues, “The Zone Naturals brand was tested by these same influencers, and formed from an incredible range of honest discussions, feedback and recommendations from trusted voices in the plus space. We can’t wait to see all of the adventures our products will join in on this spring and summer, from festivals to beach trips to everyday activities. We’re just so proud to be helping our friends in the plus community and beyond to live their best, friction-free lives.”

Introducing Chub Rub® Formula Chub Rub® Formula, an all-natural formulation of the fan favorite ChafeZone for Chub Rub®, is the signature anti-chafe product of the Zone Naturals line, and it’s easy to see why – it’s full of pure goodness. Coconut Oil lends skin-protecting hydration and helps to even out skin tone, in addition to offering anti-inflammatory properties. Moisturizing Shea Butter protects the skin’s natural oils and Aloe Vera brings soothing, healing relief. Rounding out the star-studded ingredient list is Vitamin E, which acts as a moisturizer, while also assisting in diminishing scarring from past chafing. Combined with a number of other key ingredients to produce a longlasting, grease-free, rich blend, this anti-friction stick feels as good as it performs. The Chub Rub® Formula name was derived from years of conversations within the plus size community, centered around a body positive message. Zone

Naturals – a brand founded on transparency in its ingredients, actions and messaging – believes in a “call it as you see it” approach. Since the plus size community has lovingly embraced the term Chub Rub® and uses it to define skin chafing irritations, especially between the thighs, it was a clear decision for Zone Naturals to name their product after the widely-used term. Freeman is straightforward in his reasoning: “We are bringing this product to market, and our top priority is that any person can walk by Chub Rub® Formula and instantly know that it’s an anti-chafe stick. That’s how we help the most people feel better. Throughout our close partnership with the plus community over the years, we’ve helped spark the conversation around chub rub, chafing, whatever you like to call it. Now, we’re determined to continue the discussion because there are still people out there who don’t know a product like this exists. And we want to help them feel better.” Beginning with Chub Rub® Formula followed by Friction Formula and Blister Formula, stay on the lookout as Zone Naturals expands its family of products throughout to include self-care focused bath and body offerings. TIPS FOR CREATING THE PERFECT HOME OFFICE With more people nationwide opting to create their own businesses or work for their employer remotely, the home office has become one of the most used spaces of the house, with many people spending more than eight hours a day in this room. If you’re one of these people, the kitchen table just won’t cut it if you’re looking to get serious and organized. To create a dedicated workspace that is beautiful, smart and functional, consider the following tips:

TIPS FOR CREATING THE PERFECT HOME OFFICE| STATEPOINT

TIP 1: DESIGN A SPACE WHERE YOU’LL ENJOY SPENDING TIME. Simple touches like lighting, a bright touch of paint or a wide-open window, can help create an inviting ambiance, and so can the addition of certain accessories. Instead of opting for a simple ceiling light fixture, dare to add a pop of style and color with a new ceiling fan. Not only can this addition make your space more comfortable, it can elevate your décor, with the ceiling as the centerpiece. Options from Hunter Fan Company like the Norden or Hepburn can bring the Satin Copper trend from the kitchen to the office, while new finishes in some of the brand’s fan favorites, such as the Cranbrook in Dove Grey or Blush Pink, will fit seamlessly into a bright and inviting space.

TIP 2: ADD LIFE. ADD COLOR AND VITALITY TO YOUR HOME OFFICE WITH SOME PLANT LIFE. Not only will you be improving indoor air quality, you’ll be adding beauty to the space. To save precious desk-space, consider a few hanging planters, opting for plants that thrive indoors, such as spider plants or jade.

TIP 3: DON’T FORGET FUNCTION! As the wheels turn and your creative juices start flowing, nothing can be more distracting than a creaking ceiling fan or a light that just doesn’t do the trick. A simple switch can make all the difference. While a desk lamp might solve your lighting problem, why not opt for a fixture that can solve both of those issues at the same time? Tech-savvy ceiling fan options from Hunter Fan Company like the Tunable White LED Dempsey, allow you to adjust the temperature of the light, ensuring your fan will operate quietly, keep you cool, and work as hard -- and as late -- as you do. With its dimmable remote, you can adjust the light temperature for your eyes, using warm white lighting for nighttime work and cool white lighting to perk you up in the morning. Such details will help any entrepreneur avoid distraction and create a more productive work environment.

TIP 4: GET PERSONAL. You may be doing business, but when it comes to decorating, it’s time to mix in the personal. Items such as photographs of friends and family or reminders of previous accomplishments will bring you joy and help you stay motivated. Whatever you do, don’t settle for completely bare walls! Gone are the days of dark wood-paneling, moody lighting and rolodexes. Today’s most effective home offices are brighter, more welcoming, and unite function with your personal style.
