FROM THE DESK OF Tawana Blassingame Founder & Editor in Chief

Welcome to the November 2020 issue of Queen Size Magazine. It’s my favorite time of year because layer up season is here! Boot season! Chilly NOT cold weather. I love it. I know y’all are not ready to hear this but I feel it is my duty to remind you..... Time to get ready for the holidays.... This year was tough, and it is not over yet. We have all experience (directly or indirectly) some tough times with this ongoing pandemic. A lot of us are still working from home so our wardrobes ae likely looking a tab bit different these days. Some of us are buying more tops than bottoms and some are buying more loungewear than business wear. Whatever it is you are buying, just remember we have a lot of options out there to keep up looking fabulous. A lot of businesses have been hit hard from this pandemic. We are seeing a lot of our favorite brands go out of business. Allow me to remind you that, now more than ever, it is imperative to support the brands that are here for you. Stay cute, but most importantly stay safe. Thank you all for continuing to support Queen Size Magazine. We would love to hear your feedback. HOW TO USE YOGA TO SLEEP BETTER DURING THE PANDEMIC Whether due to illness, altered work schedules, homeschooling or social distancing, COVID-19 has impacted us all personally. Stress levels are high, and the resulting anxiety makes it much harder to get a good night’s rest. Despite the efforts of the $70 billion sleep-aid industry, many exhausted people are still searching for ways to get the sleep they need to keep their immune systems strong. Unfortunately, sleeping pills are the dominant treatment strategy for insomnia. Sleeping pills don’t work for everyone, have side effects and do not address the underlying stress that is keeping you awake. That’s why medical experts are increasingly advising those struggling with poor sleep to first try

more natural solutions. Kundalini Yoga is one viable option. Through the practice of kriyas, specific breath control techniques and exercises, anyone can find the fulfilling rest they need. These Kundalini Yoga techniques can help if you have recently begun to suffer from poor sleep or you struggle with an ongoing sleep disorder. According to “Yoga Can Help With Insomnia” by Psychology Today, “Researchers at Harvard Medical School investigated how a daily yoga practice might affect sleep for people with insomnia and found broad improvements to measurements of sleep quality and quantity.”

THE IMPORTANCE OF SLEEP HYGIENE

nostril.

First, it’s critical to maintain good sleep hygiene. These are the habits that put you in the best position to have a full night of quality sleep. Signs your sleep could use improvement include taking too long to fall asleep, waking multiple times with difficulty falling back asleep, overall light and restless sleep, and drowsiness during the day.

Step 3: Once you feel drowsy, turn to your preferred sleeping position on your back or side. Continue long, deep breathing until asleep.

While each person must adopt consistent sleep hygiene practices that work for them, here are some guidelines that you can follow to sleep better.

Sleep is always an important component to health and wellness. During stressful times, quality sleep is difficult to achieve. These steps will help you refine your sleep routine and discover better rest. To learn more, visit kundaliniresearchinstitute.org.

* Avoid bright screens and stimulants like caffeine, alcohol or nicotine close to bedtime. * Exercise during the day so the body is ready to rest later. Be mindful of timing; exercising too late in the day can disrupt sleep. * A light snack is OK, but avoid heavy meals or spicy food before bed. * Drink a glass of water before sleep since dehydration can disturb the sleeping mind. Waking up to use the bathroom is less disruptive to a whole night’s sleep than dehydration. * Practice a restful activity before getting into bed. For example, do gentle yoga and slow breathing exercises, read a book, pray or meditate. * If your nighttime sleep is poor, avoid napping during the daytime. YOGIC RECOMMENDATIONS: STEPS TO DEEP, DREAMLESS SLEEP The 3HO Foundation recommends using these Kundalini Yoga techniques to quickly achieve deep sleep in just a few minutes: Step 1: A busy mind has difficulty sleeping. Quiet your thoughts by first visualizing all your worries, ideas and problems, wrapping them up in a package, then placing that package on a shelf in your mind. You’ll be amazed at how many are gone, solved or improved by the time you wake up. Step 2: Lie on your stomach, turn your head so your right cheek is on the pillow. This automatically opens your left nostril to bring in cooling, calming energy. Practice long, deep breathing in this position. Then block your right nostril completely with your hand and continue long, deep breathing through the left

How you go about updating your fall wardrobe may look a little different this season but make no mistake: there’s plenty of style waiting for you to explore, whether on socially distanced racks or digital marketplaces. Start planning your fall look with these tips and trends: Build around timeless pieces. Some wardrobe staples never go out of style. Jeans and classic tees are always on point, but if yours are worn and pilled, it may be time to replace them. This fall’s styles take jeans from one extreme to the next; you can expect to see plenty of wide-leg and loose cut options but also tapered ankle styles. If you’re dreading parting with your favorite high-rise cuts and skinny jeans, rest easy knowing you can add to your collection and still be on track with this season’s trends. Add a few trendy touches. Investing in trend-forward attire may not be at the top of your spending list, but you can easily update last season’s style by mixing in a few key pieces. Metallic tones, argyle and patchwork patterns are all on-trend this season and pair well with denim. Also look for varied takes on plaid in styles ranging from punk and grunge to schoolgirl inspired. Cozy capes add fashion-forward warmth for cooler days and fringe is showing up on everything from those comfy wraps to shirts and handbags. Make comfort a priority. If ever there was a year for hoodies to be an actual fashion trend, 2020 is it. Believe it or not, hoodies were hot on runways even before the major lockdowns forced everyone into leggings and tees. A solid hoodie tucked into a sassy plaid skirt is a fun way to take your hoodie style up a notch. Layered looks with a stylish bomber or blazer are also on point, or pair it with some bold print statement pants.

A CONSCIOUS COLLECTION. DESIGNED IN LA. MADE IN USA.

MISSION STATEMENT: Fashion. It taught us who we’re “supposed to be” how we’re “supposed to look.” It took the world for granted, sacrificed the Earth for the latest trends. It separated us into the haves and the have nots. It gave spotlights to the models on the runway, and left everyone else in last season. Well, we’re not buying it anymore. We want to make our own rules in the highest quality sustainable fabrics. We want to look good because we feel good. About our bodies, about our choices. We make the clothes, yes, but when we work together we make so much more than clothes. We make a more beautiful world. We’re not there yet, but together, we’re Almost There.

QSM: I must say, when I first heard of this brand I was immediately intrigued by its uniqueness. You don’t find too many brands that are both environmentally responsible (I like that over environmentally friendly) AND fashionable. Let’s start with your love for fashion. How and when did that start? Celine: My love for fashion started when I was two years old and always had a strong affinity for it. It started by being obsessed with 90s supermodels. My mom was from France, so I’ve always been into French fashion too. QSM: How did you come up with the name Almost There? Celine: I was on a hike with a friend and I was talking to him about creating a fashion brand that embraces today and isn’t so obsessed with the future. I felt like fashion was being too overly aspirational and I wanted it to be way more about the idea of mindfulness, accepting the now, and embracing our own journey with acceptance no matter where we are in life. QSM: A lot of us (myself included) talk about saving the environment, but are not that invested in doing so. For

example, yeah we recycle, we don’t idle, yadda yadda yadda; you know the things we see in commercials (lol). But you have become invested, you took things a few steps further. So let’s talk about that. Have you always been environmentally conscious? Celine: I’ve always had a strong desire on giving back and helping out those that are less fortunate than I am. I went on a trip to El Salvador back in high school for a social activism partnership with a charity organization. We were able to help farm and build agriculture in remote regions because they were very dependent on rice and beans for food. I believe that everyone should try to help the world become a better place. It wasn’t until I received a call from my younger sister when she criticized my background as a head Buyer in the corporate world and my role as a senior merchant/buyer. I started to learn about the harms of the fashion industry and that is when I wanted to change my trajectory and create a brand that focused on size inclusivity, sustainability and being locally made.

ALMOST THERE | QSM I hope to be able to use my brand to help others feel that they are doing their own part and to promote social activism as well. I’ve always believed that nobody is perfect, but we should always try to do better and focus on putting one foot in front of the other. ALMOST THERE is also for people that don’t know much about sustainability but want to start learning about sustainable practices with fashion. QSM: Explain your reasoning behind releasing limited drops? Celine: I didn’t want to hold onto a lot of inventory and only wanted to keep it to 30-50 units per style. I wanted to design closer to the season and not have to overcommit so far in advance. Being able to produce locally in downtown Los Angeles was really important to me as well. The idea is to buy now, wear now. We also do made-to-order orders and are open to special orders too. I always make sure that the designs are easy to wear and comfortable, but also have a sex appeal. The designs are basically updated classic styles with a modern twist so that you can wear them forever and are timeless.

15

also offer private 1 on 1 shopping and styling sessions for those that want a more unique and customized shopping experience. QSM: Tell us about your recent line? Celine: My recent line was inspired by the south of France. My French grandmother lives in Avignon and so the colors were inspired by the different elements there. I was also focused on edited styles and we only offer about 3-4 styles per drop. Each style is made for ready to work wear, casual wear, or for a night out. They are all deadstock and made out of natural based fibers that are biodegradable. QSM: I definitely would love to see more of you. Where can people support and follow you? Celine: Our website is www.shopalmostthere. com where you can sign up to be a part of our newsletter via email. Our Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest is @shopalmostthere and my Instagram is @celinekabaker!

QSM: Tell us a little bit about the owner? Who is she? Celine: I had a corporate fashion background in buying and merchandising. I worked as an omni merchant, overseeing businesses for brick and mortar, e-commerce, and international stores. I went to the University of Paris and studied business and communications. My most recent corporate position was at Victoria’s Secret where I worked as a senior merchant for casual bras. I currently live in Los Angeles and a fact about me is that aside from English, I also speak French! I really want women to feel beautiful and confident in the clothing I make. QSM: How do you find your talent (aka models) to work with? Celine: I did a casting call on craigslist and also casted with local modeling agencies. One of my best friends is also a famous fashion photographer (http://www.hannabesirevic.com/) and so she helped me create my clear vision of promoting different body types and making sure that they are all represented in all of our ad campaigns. QSM: Your sizing that you have available is (XS5X). Is there any chance that someone over a size 5X can purchase clothing? And would the price be higher? Celine: Yes! Anyone over 5x can purchase our clothing, we are happy to do a made-to-order order, it would just have a longer lead time. As for pricing, the price is the same for any size. I

MAKEUP TRANSITION | LALA SANYANG

19

It’s time to transition, as seasons change so should your makeup. Your summer makeup regimen looks different than your winter. Because of the humid and excessive heat during the summer months you often go for a lighter technique. You want makeup that feels fresh, light, and clean and dewy on the skin. The application is not as heavy. Most prefer a sheer foundation, BB cream or a tinted moisturizer. The use of golden sun bronzers adds a Sun-kissed glow to the skin. It is an easy way to give a nice finish natural skin look during the Summer months. Pop on your favorite lashes and a bold lippie you ready to head out the door. As the frigid temperatures of winter start to set in, the Makeup application become full on Beat. I find the winter months are my favorite months for makeup application. This is season where you can add layers without looking overdone. If you love heavy contour, highlights, layered shadows, and full coverage foundations, well the winter season is for you. You don’t have to worry about the heat causing you to have a makeup meltdown. Go ahead and pick up those extra products you wanted to try and remember your summer shade of foundation is different than your winter shade. Your winter shade of foundation should be a little lighter than your summer shade because you have less sun exposure in your winter months. Queens make that transition to have the right shade of foundation when you move about town. Alright my lovely Queens I hope this helps you to make your transition from Summer to Winter with your makeup regimen. As our community continues to deal with the impacts of Covid-19 know that you are in my thoughts. Please stay safe, stay positive and know that we are in this together. Smooches, LaLa Sanyang

TIPS FOR THE BEST BACK-TOSCHOOL SKIN-CARE ROUTINE

- It’s that time of year again - the new school year is starting, and this year is like no other. Whether you’ve headed back into the classroom or you’re continuing to learn remotely, this year presents new challenges for everyone. Amid all these changes, it’s easy to get so busy that you don’t take good care of yourself. The result? When you’re over-stressed and under-nourished, it shows on your skin. Why not start the school year off right by establishing good self-care habits? When you’re in the middle of midterms or working on a giant project, you’ll thank yourself for setting up a routine that keeps you looking and feeling your best, inside and out.

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|NOVEMBER 2020 ISSUE

Follow these tips to start a self-care routine to help you be your best self.

REST UP Sleep is often the first thing to go when deadlines are looming, but don’t start the semester skimping on your beauty rest. Set a reasonable time to go to bed and wake-up time and stick to it - even on weekends - as much as you can. Being sleep deprived not only leads to dark circles under your eyes, but it also makes it hard to focus on your studies. Late night? Let yourself take a short power nap in the afternoon if you need one.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL SKIN-CARE ROUTINE| BRANPOINT START CLEAN A refreshing way to start your morning is through your skincare routine. Clean & Clear® Deep Action Exfoliating Scrub invigorates skin and cleanses deep down into your pores, working to dissolve dirt and oil while exfoliating surface skin. This gentle scrub can be used daily, and along with its cooling sensation, will leave your skin looking and feeling revitalized. You may not even need that second cup of coffee to feel awake.

GIVE YOURSELF TIME TO DE-STRESS Whether it’s first thing in the morning, midday or later in the evening, allow yourself at least 15 minutes every day to do whatever helps you feel centered and relaxed: * Yoga * Meditation

23

good for your skin: A, C, D, E and K. Think berries, apricots, tomatoes, carrots and leafy greens. Healthy fats from food like avocados, salmon and other fatty fish, nuts and seeds also help give your skin that healthy glow. Don’t get enough of these healthy foods every day? Look for a multivitamin supplement to boost your vitamin intake.

HAVE SOME FUN Allow yourself time to do something fun each week. Exploring hobbies, doing exercise you enjoy, getting out in nature - whatever makes you smile, de-stress and feel happy will also help you look great. Back-to-school time doesn’t have to mean locking yourself inside with your books 24/7. Being a wellrounded person helps you focus better when you need to, and makes the hard work easier to handle. The upside? When you feel good, your skin will look good, too.

SILVANA DENKER Professional/International Model and Photographer Silvana Denker is an award winning body positive activist, professional photographer and curvy model based in Germany. With her BodyLove campaign, with which she has travelled throughout the world for four years and other photo series such as “Metallic Curves” or “Pitch Black”, she raised international attention. Through her photography work she wants to show that beauty is not a matter of size, shape, age, skin color, etc. Her clients often call it “therapeutic photography” and especially women with body issues trust her to be in front of her camera. Additionally she empowers people with her photos in front of the camera – especially on social media - in which she shows her scars, cellulite, loose skin and stretch marks. In German, but also international TV, her work has been displayed. She also had her own body positive show called “No Body Is Perfect” in which she acted as a coach on a main television channel in Germany. Her trademark is her big L-shaped scar on her abdomen, which she calls her “bellysmile”. Silvana’s BodyLove campaign is not just for women. She understands that men also struggle

with their bodies. Men also have issues with their weight, size and confidence. Men suffer from eating disorders and are often being bullied just like women. We all know that he media only shows tall men with muscles and full heads of hair – it puts the average guy under pressure. So BodyLove did not exclude them; it is a universal and all-gender message. Silvana knows she is doing the right thing and sending the right message because she receives tons of messages from men and women of all ages and sizes thanking her for reminding them that it is ok to feel good in the skin you are in. Silvana began modeling as a hobby. At that time, she was a size 8 and thought she was too fat to model professionally. What started out as fun soon became a profession for her. Through many interviews and throughout her journey, Silvana has been completely transparent about her weight loss and eating disorder. She has shared stories of how she was bullied because of her size; a story that many of us could relate too for sure.

Fall is absolutely my favorite season of the year and I know I am not alone. From the crisp air that blows through the trees, to the perfectly placed feather on a fedora, to the pumpkin spice lattes in our cutest mugs, I am completely hooked. Besides the best weather 12 months can provide, we no longer have to worry and stress over the perfect bikini body. Fashion is one of the second reasons after the amazing weather, that steals my heart every trip around the sun. It is time to break out the best boots and fedoras, earth tones, our favorite jeans paired with just the right amount of layers to get us through our day. The changing colors of the leaves most generously brings out every hue in our favorite collections. Hello Fall, oh how we’ve missed you!!!

Haircare

with Nathaniel Jaye Hey hey hey!! Back like I never left; did you miss me? Of course, you did. So much has been going on but it’s so good to be slowly getting back to normal. I thought this would be a great time to do some Q &A. I get all these amazing questions in my DM that I often times don’t get an opportunity to respond to; no, I am not ignoring you , life just gets in the way. So, we thought it would be a great opportunity to do so now. So let’s jump right into it.

How often should I be washing my hair? Ideally in a normal world I would say weekly; however, life gets busy and every week is not always conducive. So, every two weeks Is just fine; especially if you are relaxed. Now as for my natural sisters and brothers shampooing your natural tresses every week can be a full day’s work. I suggest co-washing in between shampoos; at least with this you are able to rehydrate your curls and freshen your style up without stripping it of its oils. Moreover, I know a lot of you work out and sweat a lot in your hair; if you need to shampoo it more often that is totally fine. Just be sure to use the proper shampoo and conditioner that will keep your hair moisturized and not dry out.

For someone who wears braids a lot; how long is a safe duration to keep them in? In My professional opinion two months is max; but always give your scalp and hair a break in between. Wearing braids back to back may cause much damage to your scalp over time. Be sure you are deep conditioning once the braids have been removed. Even while you have the braids in you can some astringent and WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|NOVEMBER 2020 ISSUE

cotton balls to clean your scalp from the oils, dirt and sweat build up.

I have natural hair, but it is not curly. How can I get the natural hairstyles without my hair just looking nappy? I think it’s so important that when going natural you know your curl pattern and what your hair can and can not do. Its A LOT of trial and error. I always suggest going to a natural hairstylist; whom is proficient in natural hair so that they may give you some ideas about how to care for it at home. I have come to realize that many women are using products wrong. Either they are overusing it or under using it. Normally the denser the hair the more product you need. Another mistake is that some women are not allowing their hair to fully dry; which causes the style to not take and it leaves it looking very frizzy and dry. Be sure that the products you are using do not have alcohol in them; alcohol does tend to dry the hair out a lot. Take your time and know that sometimes it will take a couple products for your hair to really respond in a positive way, pay attention to the ingredients that are in said products. Some products have a lot of fillers in them and less of the essentials oils your seeking.

HAIRCARE Q&A | NATHANIEL JAYE

I am getting married and I want to hire a hairstylist for myself and my bridal party of six,. does everyone need their own hairstylist? How many should I hire? Typically, the bride hires one hairstylist and that hairstylist may bring an assistant to help. In Some cases, the bride may hire her personal hairstylist to do her hair only and maybe contract another hairstylist to do the wedding party. Hiring six hairstylists can be a bit essessive and costly. Another option is that you can have the bridesmaids get their hair done by their own hairstylist the day before. Ultimately Its your wedding and you make the choices on how you want things to flow.

So my question is more on safety. What should I be looking for when I book my appointments? Other than is everyone wearing a mask. You should be looking to see how many clients are being serviced at the same time, are they social distancing like they should. Look for signs that have the salons safety protocol. Watch to see if they are properly sanitizing and disinfecting not only their stations and chairs but their tools as well. All of these things are so important to stop the spread of COVID-19 and to keep the salon safe from any other harms viruses and/or bacteria. Another great thing to lookout for do they have hand sanitizer stations set up in multiple areas in the salon. Bathrooms are a huge breeding ground for viruses; pay attention to how clean the bathrooms are, and do they have the proper antibacterial handwashing soap.

As someone with natural hair, I have always wondered about Keratin treatments. What exactly is that and can I say my hair is natural after getting the treatment?

49

I personally have never done one; and I have heard many good and bad stories about the process and the aftermath. According to “The Cut A keratin treatment is a chemical process that smooths and shines frizzy hair. Results can last up to six months. There are many different versions of the treatment that go by different names (Brazilian Blowout, Cezanne, Goldwell Kerasilk) and your hairstylist can customize a blend of the formula to suit your needs. Some versions of the treat release formaldehyde when heated, but many newer versions are formaldehyde-free. No matter the formaldehyde content, on a basic level, keratin treatments dive into the hair follicle and inject porous areas with keratin, an essential hair protein. I strongly suggest doing your research and find a hairstylist whom is proficient in this process.

Do you recommend a glue in weave or sew in? I do both and I love having options; both glue and sew in weaves have been given a bad name. Most of the time its due to user error and ladies leaving them in way too long. I have also come to realize that glue has latex in it and if you have a latex allergy then glue in weaves are NOT for you. Sew ins can be very beneficial as a protective style; but one must be mindful that getting sew ins back to back can have a negative effect on your hairline and the health of your scalp. Know when to take a break and let your scalp breath.

GREAT questions; please Keep them coming ! as always following me on social media IG @Hairbynathaniel_jaye. Love connecting with my readers. Until then be BOLD, be unique and be Fabulous.

Let’s talk about Sex or are only men allowed to? Written by Nyemade Boiwu (African Butterfly)

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|NOVEMBER 2020 ISSUE

LET’S TALK ABOUT SEX| NYEMADE BOIWU With the recent release of WAP and the gaining popularity of Only Fans, women’s sexuality has been a popular topic of conversation lately. I wish I could say that women are standing together to support each other and all the negative opinions being shared were from men. However, this is simply not the case. Many women consider themselves feminist but judge women. I think true feminism it not telling another woman how she should behave. I think feminism is about letting women be any type of woman that she wants to be and not claiming that takes away her respect. Not respecting a woman because she’s a sex worker or oozes sexuality is a choice. A misogynistic choice. For centuries the men making the rules and setting the “moral compass” of society have told us that those women don’t deserve respect. They say that while at the same time participating in the services being offered by those women. By framing society in a way that looks down and dismisses those women it lets men and others get away with some truly awful behavior towards them. To make it worse, many women have bought into that logic over the years as well. They shame other women for the choices they make with their bodies. I’m not sure why some people have such an issue with consent. The same people out here mad about women having Only Fan pages will gladly watch porn or other sexual content. With those a majority of the money is put into the pockets of men profiting off the bodies of women rather than the women themselves. Only Fans allow the money to go to the woman directly and now suddenly there’s a problem with the content? People need to stop shaming sex workers more than they shame the people consuming the content. The reason I say that people have an issue with consent is because that’s exactly what it boils down to. Their issue is with a woman knowingly choosing to profit from her sexuality by created the page. However, most of those people would watch revenge porn or check out leaked nude photos. So, clearly, they have no issue with a woman’s body being objectified or sexualized. They just reject the idea of a woman knowingly consenting to it being done. I saw a comment recently where someone said that women sexualizing themselves “sets us back”. This is not true. Women sexualizing

51

themselves doesn’t set us back because women are multifaceted. They show that women can be wives and mothers but also sing about WAP. Women can be intellectual college grads and also own their sexuality. The same goes for those who claim that by being sexual women are objectifying themselves. The same thing I said earlier applies. Objectifying a woman because she’s a sex worker or overtly sexual is a choice. A misogynistic choice. Whether she’s flashing her breast on her Only Fans page or doing splits on TikTok to WAP she’s still a human being. As women our sexuality is part of who we are but having sexual moments does not give people a pass to act as though that’s all we are made of. Why do people act as though a woman can’t be great AND sexual? Why do we act like there’s only one type of way for a woman to behave that will get her respect? We should respect other people because they’re a person deserving of respect, not because they check off our personal etiquette boxes. Women shouldn’t only be thought off and portrayed as sexual being when it’s through the eyes and lyrics of a man. Girls need to know that their sexuality is something they can have agency over. Girls and women need people like Meg and Cardi to help show them that it’s okay. We, as woman, need to get used to seeing other women owning their sexuality so we in turn can do the same thing behind closed doors. Why do we continue to act like its okay for a woman to be objectified and sexualized by men but it’s horrible when women themselves talk about it or put it out there? Women should have body autonomy in all areas and that includes her pleasure as well. To me true, feminism is making the choice to say that women deserve respect no matter what they choose to do. As long as her actions aren’t hurting others no one should be trying to tell women the “right way’ to be a women. Stay at home moms don’t deserved to be shamed for their “traditional” choices any more than working moms or sexual women deserve to be shamed for their “nonconventional” choices. There’s room for all of us and dimming someone else’s light will not make anyone shine brighter. However, if we all respect each other despite disagreeing with different life choices, then we all glow.

BEAUTY COMPETITIONS

THE PROS AND Beauty competitions have grown over the years. What used to just be only pageants have now expanded to modeling and runway competitions and drag contests. My very first competition was actually not a pageant, but a runway competition. I was the only plus size model in the competition and still very new to the industry. I did not make it to the finals, and I didn’t deserve to be as I was “green”, but thankful I was able to grow from the opportunity.

3. You can learn so much about the beauty industry 4. Depending on the location, it gives you an opportunity to travel to places you’ve never visited before 5. It can be a springboard to other opportunities 6. It’s a chance to show that you’re not just beautiful, but intelligent. Despite the name of the competition, judges are also looking for the beauty from within.

No beauty competition is perfect. As with anything else, it has its pros and cons. Below is just a short list:

PROS:

1. It’s an opportunity to step out of your comfort zone by showing the world what you got! 2. The bonds you create with the other contestants are priceless; it can be better than actually winning

by Dr. Janelle “The Curvy Doc” Simmons WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|NOVEMBER 2020 ISSUE

THE PROS AND CONS OF BEAUTY COMPETITIONS | JANELLE SIMMONS

53

THE CONS CONS:

1. Competing is a very expensive endeavor. From travel, to hair and makeup, to clothing…it adds up. Depending on the location your family and friends may not have the funds to support you in person, so you’re without your cheerleaders. 2. Some contestants may not be interested in forming long lasting relationships, and may be unfriendly and antisocial 3. If competing to seek validation from others, feelings of disappointment and low self-esteem may arise, especially if you don’t win 4. Those who do not win may be disgruntled and cause drama. It’s not a normal occurrence but it happens; make sure you’re not the reason for the drama! If you’ve gotten this far, I haven’t scared you away… LOL! If you’re considering competing, I strongly recommend it. How to choose the right one? Here are my tips:

1. Do your research! There are so many to choose from. At one time we were limited by size and age; now there is a competition for everyone. How do you research? Google of course, but all organizations are promoting their competitions on social media. Make sure to check the competition requirements and fees. 2. Once you found the one(s) you’re interested in, see if there are any videos of their prior events. Also, contact the director and ask questions. Trust me, they will be happy to answer. 3. Ask current/former queens about their experiences. It’s important to find out the good, the bad, and the ugly, and then draw your own conclusions. Now go out there and slay! You’re embarking on the experience of a lifetime; an experience many are afraid to conquer. Utilize your support system in all steps of the process. And if you don’t have that support, you can definitely count on me.
