Barrie Lester retires from international circuit During the Nationals, Barrie Lester announced his retirement from international representation. Barrie has 252 international appearances under his belt, and has won multiple medals for Australia. Barrie Lester
BQ has endeavoured to be modest with fee increases and this coming year has stayed with national CPI. As has been said before, “we really need to keep this show on the road” continuing to accredit more umpires and coaches, so they may enhance our great game and ensure everyone plays by the rules and enjoys their time on the green. BQ has notification that funding from the State Government through the Sport and Recreation Department has now been made available. Without support from the government, many events would not be available to bowlers in Queensland . The State Champion of Club Championships held in Mackay at South Suburban Bowls Club was not to be missed. We thank the Board Chair Colin Meng and members of Souths Suburban for the use of their premises for this event.
Peter Williamson
All the best, Barrie!

THE NATIONALS 2023 CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS SINGLES This year, The Nationals kicked off at Sorrento Bowls Club, north of Perth WA with the Australian Singles Champions of Champions. The Australian Champions of Champions is the event which decides who is to be the 2023 Champ from the 2022 State winners. This year, Queensland men were represented by Glen Pitts (Algester) and Queensland women by Julia Brownie (West Toowoomba). Congratulations to Glen Pitts for winning bronze in the Australian Champion of Champion Singles. Glen was on the hunt for gold right up until the last round and fell only two shots short of winning silver. Julia Brownie finished fifth in the women’s event with only margin keeping her out of the medals.

WOMEN TRIUMPH AT QLD VS TAS TEST Every two years Queensland and Tasmania do battle in a test series with two tests prior to the start of the Sides and the third test during the main Australian Sides event. Queensland women won all three tests to secure their shield: Test 1: 80-43; Test 2: 70-36; Test 3: 70-46. The Tasmanian men won the first two tests to claim the shield, but Queensland bounced back to win their test during the main event. Test 1: 47-61; Test 2: 47-54; Test 3: 67-49. Congratulations to Lynsey Clarke and Barrie Lester who were awarded the players of the series.

As the reigning champions of the Australian Sides, we all had the Queensland men locked in as pre-tournament favourites for this year. However, the men couldn’t defend their title and fell agonisingly short in their final round to NSW, claiming silver with six wins out of seven games. Queensland women were leading the tournament going into the last round until NSW jumped them at the start and, although they fought hard, they lost by the barest of margins. This relegated them to third overall, with Victoria taking gold and NSW the silver. Queensland’s Candice Ayton, Pam Rowe, Bolivia Millerick and Kelsey Cottrell won the best rink, after winning all games with a margin of 85.

SENIOR SIDES The Queensland men took out the Australian Senior Sides Trophy after being undefeated at the Joondalup Bowling Club in Perth WA. After a good start to the event defeating ACT and NSW on day 1, they got the better of defending Champions Victoria in round 3. The afternoon proved to be much harder against the home State of Western Best Performed Rink L-R John Finlayson, Ray Kurtz, Bill Australia with the game going down to the wire, the Cornehls and Scott Chamberlain Queenslanders sneaking a draw after being down to keep them as the only undefeated team. After a tidy win versus South Australia in round 5 they were challenged again in the afternoon game, this time by Tasmania. After being 16 shots down, the Queenslanders clawed their way back to within 1 shot before the margin blew out again to 10. In a magnificent team effort, the Queenslanders scored 13 unanswered shots to lead by 3 going into the last end. Keeping it tight, the Queenslanders snuck home by 2 in an epic battle.

A final round victory against NT clinched the title for the Queenslanders, undefeated for the tournament in what was a great team performance. Well done to Bill Cornehls, Ray Kurtz, Scott Chamberlain and John Finlayson for being the best performed rink of the men’s tournament and the only one undefeated, closely followed by Keith Whalley, Jim Wise, Alan Howard and Greg Rolls in second with six wins. The women’s team had some great battles with a couple of close games not quite falling their way. They ended up with four wins out of seven to finish fifth on the ladder. AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
The climax event of the Nationals, the Australian Championships played out from 17-20 October at Joondalup Bowling Club in Perth. Featuring Triples, Pairs, Fours and Singles, the crème de la crème of Queensland took to the greens with one thing on their mind: to bring home the silverware.
TRIPLES AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
Men’s Triples Gold: Roger Stevens, Peter Brown & Dean Drummond
Women’s Triples Bronze: Laura Schultz, Gail Crompton & Wendy Wilson
The men’s triples event saw Queenslanders Roger Stevens, Dean Drummond and Peter Brown taking home the gold after an undefeated day out west. They would face off in a pulsating final against Victoria’s Joshua Cartwright, Brent Reiner and David Cartwright that would see the northern squad hold on for an epic 14-13 win. Stevens, Drummond and Brown enjoyed a brilliant sectional phase, winning all three contests with a healthy shot difference of 26 with their closest victory being a five-shot salutation over the ACT. In the women, 2020 conquerors Kate Matthews, Genevieve Delves and Natasha Van Eldik enjoyed a mighty day, going undefeated in their run to the title and winning gold. South Australia claimed the silver, while Lauren Schultz, Gail Crompton and Wendy Wilson took home the bronze for Queensland with a 20-9 win over Tasmania. 14 November 2023 Queensland Bowler
PAIRS AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS Three pairs events were run and won at the 2023 Australian Championships as part of the 2023 Nationals on Wednesday, October 19 as Queensland, New South Wales and Tasmania took home the women’s, men’s and mixed disciplines respectively. In one of the most star-studded fields of the week, Queensland’s Claire Turley and Lynsey Clarke overcame South Australia’s Cath Greenslade and Jodi Kotz in a tight final. A rampant Turley and Clarke got out to a 12-6 lead with just three ends to play, before South Australia tightened the screws to apply the pressure. However, it was to no avail, as the Queenslanders took home the gold with a 12-10 win.
Women’s Pairs Gold: Claire Turley & Lynsey Clarke
FOURS AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS It was a silver for the Queensland men in the fours. The New South Welshmen conquered the men’s competition thanks to a 12-7 victory over Queensland’s Thomas Blaszczyk, Stephen Hayden, Jacob Nelson and Kane Nelson in the final, with Queensland taking home the silver and NSW the gold. Queenslanders didn’t place in either of the singles events, but we look forward to next year’s Australian Championships!
Men’s Fours Silver L-R: Thomas Blaszczyk, Steve Hayden, Jacob Nelson & Kane Nelson

International Deaf LAWN bowls championships
Representing Australia in the 9th International Deaf Lawn Bowls Championships Back L-R: Michael Barca, David Ravlich, Stephen Nolan, Paul Williams & Brian Lockyer. Front L-R: Anne Jeavons, Natasha Hogan, Amanda Care, Janet Hogan (Gladstone BC), Kate Leese & Robyn Larkin
The 9th International Deaf Lawn Bowls Championships was held in September at Colinton Bowling Club, Edinburgh, Scotland. Countries represented were: England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, New Zealand, Australia and, for the first time, India. The Australian team arrived two days before competition for two practice days. Our first practice was a real eye opener. The very slow greens and jet lag affected everyone. However, after two days of practice, some players were able to adapt and others continued to improve throughout the competition.
MEDAL TALLY Men’s Singles Bronze Australia - David Ravlich (WA) David Ravlich from WA won his section being unbeaten, but the format meant he had to play the runner-up in the other section in the semi-final, and unfortunately lost to the overall winner from New Zealand. David then played off and won Bronze. In the whole competition he only lost one game, so well done, David.

Women’s Triples Silver Australia - Robyn Larkin VIC, Janet Hogan QLD, Kate Leese WA These ladies came home quick and fast as the games progressed and again weren’t far off gold, but came home with the silver medal. Well done ladies. In the other disciplines, Australia finished out of medal contention. All games were competitive and sometimes a little bit of luck would have helped but it wasn’t to be. It was a great experience, and we now look forward to the 10th Championship in four years’ time, which could be held on the Gold Coast.

PAIRS: Pialba and Club Tweed win Champion of Champion Pairs GOLD Back-to-Back The pairs event was headlined by Pialba’s Mark Armstrong and Nic Gosley and Club Tweed’s Claire Turley and Lynsey Clarke, who were back at the championships trying to defend their 2022 titles. And defend their titles they did, with both teams achieving a rare feat of winning “back-to-back” pairs titles. Not many players win this title twice, let alone two years in a row. Turley and Clarke are fresh off winning the Australian Pairs Championship last month in Perth and proved to be a formidable combination. Both defending combos led their respective sections after two wins by the end of day one. The Pialba pair snuck home in a see-sawing battle with Airlie Beach’s Harry Quod and Armando Isgro by two shots in the afternoon game, while Club Tweed defeated Hamilton’s Jane Bush and Emma Spicer to be the only team unbeaten in their section. Section 2 of the men’s event left two teams undefeated after day one. Algester’s Martin Carloss (sub) and Glen Pitts along with Club Kawana’s Geoff Harrison and Kurt Brown were ready to do battle in the third and final round on day two to determine the section winner, which was Club Kawana. Algester staged a remarkable comeback from 9-20 down against Belmont Services’ Jacob and Kane Nelson to win 21-20 in round 1.

SINGLES: Chloe Stewart & Jacob Nelson win Champion of Champion Singles GOLD! Club Tweed’s Chloe Stewart and Belmont Services’ Jacob Nelson won the blue-ribbon QLD State Champion of Champion Singles. With the State’s top bowlers vying for the prestigious title of Singles Champion, it was always going to be a top-class final. An update on Food Safety Requirements In Queensland, every bowls club that sells meals or unpackaged food under a food business licence is required to have an accessible food safety supervisor (FSS). The responsibility of the FSS is to ensure the safe handling of food within the club. This is achieved by providing guidance to the staff, continuously reviewing and updating club procedures, and conducting inspections of both food handling operations and the premises. When potential hazards are identified, it becomes the duty of the FSS to oversee the management of risks and proactively address or rectify any issues. It is imperative for the club to ensure that the FSS is capable of fulfilling these responsibilities. Moreover, the FSS is anticipated to actively participate in the dayto-day operations of the food business and must be reasonably accessible to both food handlers and the relevant local Council. New Requirements A new regulation, effective December 2023, mandates that FSS qualifications must be obtained within the last five years,
introducing an expiry date where none existed before. Notably, the FSS doesn’t have to be present during shifts but must be reachable. To avoid situations where the FSS is not reachable, it is advisable for clubs to appoint both a primary and a secondary FSS. The increased requirements for food handler training are also a recent development. Anyone handling food must undergo food safety training. Accreditation is not mandatory but strongly recommended. A food handler is any individual engaged in various food-related tasks within a club, including making, cooking, preparing, serving, packing, displaying, and storing food. Ensuring the ongoing competence of food handlers is crucial, and although there’s no specific timeframe or refresher period stipulated, it is recommended to incorporate regular refresher training sessions throughout the year as a best practice. In the event of inspections and audits by local council, clubs might be required to furnish evidence of employee training, such as certificates and training records.
Proposed Training Options For food handlers at your club, it is recommended that they undertake the basic food safety unit “Use hygienic practices for food safety”. However, there are also other free online training programs endorsed by enforcement agencies available. Alternatively, if your club’s induction/onboarding process already includes food safety training, that suffices. The food handler training should encompass specific skills and knowledge, including: •
Understanding of safe food handling;
•
Strategies for preventing food contamination;
•
Procedures for sanitation and cleaning; and
•
Guidelines on personal hygiene.
If you have any questions about the food safety requirements for your club, then please feel free to contact me, Matt Bradford, at 07 3224 0353.

Who will challenge James Nash High School? Here is a challenge to all schools... Bowls Queensland runs the best high school program in Australia: The Secondary Schools Cup. All secondary schools are invited to play for the State Title, which, for the past three years, has been owned by James Nash High School. Who can take this esteemed title from them? The State Junior Championships will be played in Bundaberg in January, where we will be asking for expressions of interest from our current eligible juniors who would like to compete in this competition. This school-based competition requires a school to nominate teams of two players. This is an open competition (two girls, two boys or one boy and one girl). Each team is allowed only one registered member per team, and there must be at least one non-bowler per team. This also allows for two non-bowlers. The format is 3-bowl pairs played over nine ends. Districts that nominate more than one school within their boundaries will be required to play off, along the lines of Champion of Champions.
2023 Secondary Schools Cup L-R: Winners Slater Mason & Riley Gerick (James Nash High School) with runners-up Noah McCandless & Thomas Brehmer (Stretton State College)
We have 20 districts within the state and we are looking to have a representative from each of these districts. The State Final has previously be hosted by Club Pine Rivers, with Bowls Queensland providing the travelling teams with transport and accommodation. Nomination forms, and a forum to explain more about the Secondary Schools Cup will be provided at the State Junior Championships. Myself (Micheal Sorrensen) and David Barnes will be available for questions during the championships. David and I are the two Queensland Club Support Managers and work with Bowls Queensland to make this the best school competition in Australia. Now, who’s got what it takes to challenge James Nash High School?? Umpire with Joan Brotherton Position of Players All district and group play-offs will now have been completed and we are all looking forward to the State Finals which will be played during this month. Best wishes to all who have reached the finals and I look forward to meeting you all when I attend to assist with the umpiring. This month, as I have had many calls regarding the position of players, I will go through some of following laws that relate to the various situations and also quote some of the information from the Officiating Manual which I hope will be of assistance to you all. Position of Players: This is covered in Section 1.3 – Possession of the Rink commencing on page 26 of the law book. Law 12 – Position of players: 12.1 - In relation to the rink of play: • 12.1.1 - Players at the mat end of the rink who are not delivering a bowl must stand at least 1 metre behind the mat. • 12.1.2 – Players at the head end of the rink and who are not controlling play must stand: • 12.1.2.1 – behind the jack if they are members of the team which is in possession of the rink. • 12.1.2.2 – behind the jack and away from the head if they are members of the team which is not in possession of the rink. • 12.1.2.3 – on the surrounds of the green if the jack is in the ditch; or • 12.1.2.4 - well clear of the head if it is not possible to stand on the surrounds. • 12.1.3 – As soon as a bowl is delivered, a player who is controlling play from a position that is either level with or in front of the jack, must take their position as described in Law 12.1.2. • 12.1.4 – If a player does not meet the terms of this law, Law 13 will apply. 12.2 – In relation to a neighbouring rink: • 12.2.1 – A player must not go into a neighbouring rink where play is in progress. • 12.2.2 – A player must neither go into nor walk along a neighbouring rink, even if it is not being used, while an opponent is about to deliver or is actually delivering a bowl. • 12.2.3 – If the rink of play is an outside rink (see law 49.6), a player must neither go into nor walk along the section of green that lies between the outside side boundary of the rink and the side ditch while an opponent is about to deliver or is actually delivering a bowl. • 12.2.4 – If a player does not meet the terms of this law, Law 13 will apply. Another situation that has become an issue, is where to stand when the players call an umpire to measure any disputed shot or shots – Law 43.2.2 and this is also covered in the Officiating Manual – page 47. •
When called and before starting any measure, check

with both teams what is required and exactly which bowls are in question and need to be measured. Take a few seconds to access the situation. Will any of the bowls need wedging. Ask for the bowls not in question to be removed from the head. Ask players to stand clear of the measure. The measurer or umpire should be the only person in the head.
Position of Markers: This is covered in the Officiating Manual commencing on page 19 and also Law 42.2.5. The start of each end: A good marker will maintain the same routine at the start of each end. This includes carrying out the following four tasks at the start of each end: 1. Taking up a position between the two metre mark and the front ditch. 2. Making sure the mat has been positioned correctly on the centre line. 3. Making sure the player has delivered the jack to the legal length and placing it on the centre line. 4. Centering a jack that comes to rest between the 2m mark and the front ditch at the two metre mark as described under Law 9.2.
Law 12.1.2 Players at the head end of the rink and who are not controlling play must stand: Law12.1.2.1 Behind the jack if they are members of the team which is in possession of the rink and the photo shows the 2 players on the left are behind the jack. Law 12.1.2.2 Behind the jack and away from the head if they are members of the team which is not in possession of the rink and the photo shows the 2 players on the right are well behind the jack and away from the head.
After the jack and mat have been positioned: • The ideal position to stand is approximately two metres to the rear and one metre to the side of the jack. • A player’s view of the rink boundary pegs, and centre line is not obstructed. • The head can be viewed clearly, and the marker is in a position to react to anything that happens in the head. • There are occasions when the Marker may need to adjust their positioning: • If the jack has been moved, the marker will need to move to maintain a position of two meters to the rear and one metre to the side of the jack. • If the marker’s position casts a shadow over the head, move to the opposite side of the jack or slightly further towards the back ditch. • Once a drive has been delivered, move slightly forward of the head. Law 43.2.2 Where to stand when the players call an umpire to measure. The above covers many situations that do occur on the green and The photo shows the umpire beginning I hope that it is of value to you when playing your game. WHAT’S YOUR CLUB BEEN DOING? Celebrating 75 Years at Toogoolawah BC
The Toogoolawah Bowls Club Inc held its 75th birthday with a day of two games of two-bowl-triples in lovely weather and in the company of many friends. At lunch we were presented with a plaque by Bowls Queensland’s Kerry Green to commemorate the day. Kerry was accompanied by Greg Flynn and Denis Kirkman from BQ and we were lucky enough to have Graham Lewis, President of Cunningham District with us as well. President Keith McWhirter read out the history of the club which had been compiled by Neville Denman, age 94, a long standing member of the club. Our Mayor Graeme Lehmann dropped by to join in during his busy day and a wonderful plaque from our state member Deb Frecklington rounded out our day. With only 16 members at this point, we must sincerely thank all our volunteers as, without them, we couldn’t hold events such as this. We may be small, but you can bet that we all punch well above our weight.

Friendship and Charity Day at Pine Rivers
The Pine Rivers Ladies Bowls Club recently held its annual Friendship and Charity Day, which was sponsored by True Care Locations. Members donated multiple items for the charity stall, which opened for purchases prior to a fun morning of bowls and lunch. This year, the nominated charity was The Bravery Box, which helps children dealing with cancer by ‘providing fun programs to delight, entertain and support’ as well as children’s cancer research and support for the children’s families. The colours for The Bravery Box are blue and yellow, so many members took to the green in exuberant yellow and blue attire. More than 70 people attended and $2,230 was presented to The Bravery Box representative, Shane Richards.

Bramble Bay Bowls Club’s 75th Anniversary Bramble Bay Bowls Club has celebrated its 75th Birthday. There was a good turnout on 24 September 2023 and celebrations included a game of bowls, lunch and refreshments and late afternoon entertainment. Bowls Queensland representative, Greg Flynn, presented Club Chairman, Allan Young, with a 75th Anniversary commemorative plaque. This was proudly displayed by Venue Manager Natalie Matthews, Chairman Allan Young and Treasurer Anne-Maree Green. The MBDBA District’s President Alan Thorpe also congratulated the Club. David Buxton & Paula Feuerriegel cutting the cake
Two of the longest serving members of the club, David Buxton and Paula Feuerriegel, with more than 60 years of membership between them, cut the cake which was enjoyed by all. The Bramble Bay Bowls Club was founded on 31 August 1948 and the first green was declared open in May 1950. The club boasted a membership of 72 when the first game of bowls was played and the second green was completed in 1954. The third green was opened in June 1977. In the 1980s and ‘90s, Bramble Bay Bowls Club had the largest membership of all Brisbane metropolitan clubs. While the current membership over time has contracted, members are still passionate about their bowls.

Coaching with BQ coaching committee What makes a champion team? By Jacqui Hineman
What makes a champion team and why can a champion team beat a team of champions? While selectors select individuals to play together, it is the actions of these individuals that make or break a team. The adage ‘the whole is more than the sum of its parts’ highlights the importance of looking at the bigger picture and remembering the common goal of the team. In a team, no-one is more important than anyone else. Everyone has a role, everyone’s position is important, and every bowl played has a purpose. We have all seen teams where negativity and doubt have contributed to team disharmony and team performance. On the flip side, other teams seem to be in synch and everyone works together in a positive way. These teams are a joy to watch.
Four stages of team development
There are four steps that teams need to take before they can successfully work as a well-oiled machine. These steps are known as forming, storming, norming and performing. Step 1 Forming The forming stage begins once selections have been made and individuals have been notified of their playing position within the team. The selectors have formed a team of individuals who they feel will work well together. It is now up to the players and coaches to transform the group of individuals into a team. Step 2 Storming After the forming stage, the storming stage begins. This is when everyone has a say in their role within the team as well as deciding the collective goals of the team. Each team member should be encouraged to have input into discussions as this will help the skip get to know each player better. This stage is where strengths and weaknesses of players are acknowledged and shared goals are set. Step 3 Norming The norming stage is when individuals work together to establish a set of standards and patterns, or norms that are recognised and accepted by all team members. These norms are unique to each team and provide all players with a sense of belonging. This is the time to establish a game plan, so that each player knows their role and what is expected of them, not only in the position they play, i.e. skip, lead, but also as a supportive and positive team mate. It is at this stage that team culture is developed. Step 4 Performing The team has now reached the performing stage. The team has to put into practice what has been learnt while working through the various stages. A group of individuals, who may not have played together before, are now a team with the information and skills to play in a collaborative and cohesive manner, while working towards a common goal.
TEAM = Together, Everyone, Achieves, More
