HOMESIDE HUNGRY FOR WIN Queensland’s men are chasing their fifth title triumph at the Senior State Sides, but two-time winner Nigel Smith predicts a tough ride ahead for the hometown heroes. It’s been three long years since Queensland’s men last lifted the Australian Senior Sides trophy, and the men in Maroon are getting restless. Still the most decorated team in the championships, with four titles to their name, Queensland’s time at the top could come to an end if New South Wales get up at Tweed Heads on October 10. “Senior State Sides is a highly competitive event and the other states are very strong,” Qld stalwart Nigel Smith said. “In 2011 we were the champions at Warilla, but New South Wales have won it twice since then, so they’re the early favourites.” With three titles wins to date, the Blues are hot on Queensland’s heels on the championship leader-board, but they aren’t the only threat on the horizon, with Victoria and Western Australia also top contenders according to Queensland state coach Bill Cornehls. Smith, meanwhile, is hoping
the home advantage will benefit his side. “We have an advantage not only that we’re in Queensland, playing at Tweed Heads, but we have the opportunity to be playing at competition standard right up until the start of the event,” he said. But Tweed Heads has proved unhappy hunting ground for Queensland teams in the past. The last time Tweed hosted the over-60s titles NSW were victorious, with Queensland finishing fourth. However, with the addition two new faces in the men’s side (Alan Elliot and Mick Tobin), Smith is quietly confident about Queensland chances, and has commended the skill of the selectors in choosing quality side. “There aren’t many 60 and over events, so it makes it very difficult for the selectors, but they have done a fantastic job of picking a very competitive field from right across Queensland,” Smith said. The current team have history together, with most players part of the 2011 winning team. “It’s a wonderful event and the strength of our squad is that

we all get on well, we’ve all played together before and we have great team camaraderie. They’re all quality players,” said Smith (pictured below). “For me, there’s nothing better than winning a team event, you’re in that encouraging team environment and you want to win not just for yourself, but for your mates as well.” Ladies The Queensland ladies are yet to win a Senior State Sides title, although they came close at the inaugural women’s event in 2011, losing out to WA by one rink-win. Player Sue McKenzie is looking forward with hope, as six new faces join the ranks in 2014. “There are many new faces selected so we can’t be too sure how we’ll go, but we’ll give it a good shot,” McKenzie said. With three State Side debutants on her own team, McKenzie hopes new blood will fire up their chances of a success this year. “I hope we’ll go extremely well, we’re a fairly strong side, with the new faces you can never be sure, but we’re all really looking forward to it,” McKenzie said. As in the men’s comp, NSW and Victoria will be the biggest threats to a Queensland win.
Who’s who at the 2014 Australian Senior State Sides Championships RED HOT FAVOURITES Queensland may be playing on home soil, but defending champions New South Wales are odds-on favourites for the 2014 men’s title. Half the players in this almost unchanged NSW line-up are former state or Australian players, including Rex Johnton, who is also a former Australian national coach.
In the women’s event, Victoria will be the team to beat, as they battle to retain their 2013 title. Their talented line-up includes former Scottish international skip Joyce Lindores. “Victoria always have strong sides, with plenty of accomplished players,”Qld state coach Bill Cornehls said.
CONTENDERS FOR THE CROWN To write off Queensland’s men in their home state would be silly. The most decorated team in the competition, with four titles to date, Queensland may not have the firepower of NSW, but they have proven time and again that they’ve got the goods to win against hot-shot sides from south of the border.
Victoria’s men also boast a talented line-up and will be out to increase their tally of two Senior Sides titles. NSW and WA will be the tough teams to beat in the women’s championships, but the real contender for this year’s crown has to be Qld’s women, who have a point to prove on their home turf at Tweed Heads.
DARK HORSES The South Australian men’s and women’s teams could be a chance at this year’s championships, thanks mainly to their experience on faster-paced greens, similar to what they’ll play on at the Gold Coast. It’s a long shot though, with the big guns Queensland, NSW and Victoria fielding far more experienced teams.
Tasmania could also surprise, with a formidable men’s team dominated by big names like Bruce Howard, John McKibben, Roly Coad and Wayne Manson, all of whom are former open team reps. Tasmanian women’s side is also strong with Australian Sides players, Kim Saunders and Gaylene Elsworthy in the ranks.

before Northern Territory joined the fight, and it wasn’t until the entry of South Australia in 2012 that the Sides became a truly allAustralian championships.
Sponsored by ClearView for three years, the men’s only competition was originally established as a competitive outlet for over60s bowlers at a time when the average age of state and national representatives was falling.
In 2011 the inaugural women’s Senior State Sides was held at NSW’s Warilla Bowls Club, with QLD, NSW, VIC, ACT, WA and TAS going head-to-head. WA claimed the inaugural title...just... finishing on equal points with Qld, but claiming the title on rinks wins.
The inaugural championships featured just four sides: Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and ACT, with the Victorian’s upsetting hometown favourites NSW to lift the title. Queensland lifted the trophy in 2006, before going back-to-back in 2007.
SA and NT entered the women’s event in 2012 and the event was rebranded the Australian Senior State Sides Championships.
2007 also saw the addition of Western Australia and Tasmania to the Senior Sides line-up, but it would be another three years
Unfortunately NT were unable to field a women’s team in 2013 and will miss out again in 2014.

ABOUT THE TWEED REGION
Tweed Coast Stretching from Tweed Heads in the North to the untamed beauty of Wooyung Beach, the Tweed Coast offers a choice of quiet seaside towns and sophisticated resorts. Safe, patrolled swimming beaches are lined with first class resort hotels and apartment accommodation and a vibrant retail precinct offering boutique shopping, sun-drenched cafés and restaurants. Adjoining Queensland’s world-famous Gold Coast, Tweed Heads provides a less crowded alternative to the glitz and glamour. There is still plenty of entertainment in store at clubs like Twin Towns, Banora Point and Terranora where the gig guide features major international stars and Australian-grown chart-toppers.
Nestled in the caldera of an ancient shield volcano, the Tweed stretches between the world-famous holiday destinations of Byron Bay in northern NSW and Queensland’s sun-drenched Gold Coast. Nominated by Tourism Australia as one of the National Landscapes – Australia’s Green Cauldron – the Tweed offers the best of all worlds with lush World Heritage rainforests and dramatic mountain ranges just a short drive through fertile green fields from uncrowded, unspoilt beaches and worldfamous surfing point breaks. Journey along the road less travelled from the bustling hub of Tweed Heads to peaceful seaside towns and tranquil waterways meandering through cane fields and dairy farms to quirky rural communities immersed in a vibrant culture of music, art, creativity, spirituality … and a sense of adventure. They say the people make the place and Tweed is no different. It’s a lifestyle choice that brings people here. The colourful cast that make up the Tweed will entertain you, engulf you and embrace you into their community. Join them as they celebrate with festivals and concerts, admire their handiwork at artist studios and galleries and be prepared to chat with them at roadside stalls and farmers’ markets. Enjoy their hospitality at cosy rainforest retreats, friendly B&Bs and luxury ocean front resorts.
It’s all about the people … and it’s all about you.
Kingscliff has emerged as a popular dining destination with a string of restaurants and cafés lining the beach front esplanade. It’s all within easy access of Salt Village and Casuarina Beach where you can enjoy the pampering style of Peppers Salt Resort and Spa, Mantra on Salt Beach, Grand Mercure Casuarina Resort and Casuarina Beach Resort. Those looking for the Tweed’s low-key approach need look no further than the beachside cottages, holiday parks and motels at Fingal Head, Hastings Point, Cabarita, Pottsville and Wooyung, while the coastal hills hide cosy B&Bs and retreats nestled amidst tea plantations and market gardens. Tweed Valley Carved out by the Tweed and Oxley Rivers as they meander around the central volcanic plug of Mt Warning, the Tweed Valley has become home to an eclectic mix of characters, those looking to escape the rat race of the ‘big cities’ now live next door to farmers and artists creating a fascinating mix of cultures and philosophies. Dine with the Hare Krishna community at a Sunday banquet. Be inspired by art workshops at a hand-built Renaissancestyle castle. Shop for farm fresh organic produce at roadside stalls. Hunt for antique treasures and regional crafts in a riverside village. Join in a New Age festival or visit the local farmers’ markets. The natural wonders of the region take a starring role with plenty of opportunities to bushwalk in the rainforests, throw a line into the river from a secluded riverbank or take that early morning hike to the summit of Mt Warning.
