MATRIARCH’S WILD SIDE

orth est Queensland district always has the furthest distance to travel but t sa’s ev eters and Cloncurry’s amien cGee said despite the cost they would never pass up a chance to compete at tate ixed airs.

She got herself a tattoo to proclaim her love of bowls, and as State Mixed Pairs 2015 progressed, she confided she just might have to celebrate by adding a little extra ink, should she and Damien take the title…

Winner Ogle said it would be disappointing if State Mixed Pairs were to lose its individual identity.

Alison Ogle was seen as the matriarch of State Mixed Pairs 2015, but the woman affectionately called ‘mum’ by many of the state finalists has a hidden wild side.

Mum and son differ in their appreciation of the art form, Damien tattoo-free and with no plans to celebrate his state title in ink. However the Ogle-Rideout family remain tight knit, saying affectionately “the family who bowls together, stays together”. Mum and son share a house, Damien initially attracted into the game of bowls by his parents. “My husband and I used to play together, and then Damien decided he wanted to learn,” Ogle said. “And now our grandson (Damien’s son Shane Rideout, aged 12) is learning the game, he won the Fours at State Juniors this year.” However, it’s not always smooth sailing playing with family, as Alison points out. “We get along pretty good, but he does tell me what I am doing wrong out there,” she laughed.

From the Chair What’s wrong with the old black bowls? As the Christmas party season comes around and barefoot bowls is likely to ramp up at clubs wanted to address the issue of the new brightly coloured barefoot bowls we see advertised at very cheap prices. ome people say they’re reat and it’s about time clubs had some trendy fun and cheap bowls to offer to recreational bowlers on their once a year visits. Get rid of those old black bowls that are trotted out by clubs to bare-footers they do the ima e of bowls a reat disservice some say.

Others see the new cheap and cheerful barefoot bowls as an affront to endorsed bowls manufacturers who ump throu h many hoops and meet strict minimum standards in order to have their clothin e uipment and bowls approved for use on a reen. (Approved bowls manufacturers also contribute some of their pro ts back into the sport via endorsement fees and sponsorships.

with John Dawson

Clubs and bowlers should be clear they are not endorsed for competition that is to say any sort of competition. ust as you can play beach cricket with any set once you o out on a pitch to play a ame you are re uired to use approved and endorsed ear. Same with the cheap colourful non-endorsed barefoot sets.

“Just as you can play beach cricket with any set, You can buy them once you go out on a you can use pitch to play a game, you them but are required to use approved when you go onto a and endorsed gear. The green to play same applies with cheap, a structured colourful, non-endorsed game of bowls the barefoot bowls.”

Others are concerned some individuals may end up feelin tricked should they buy the non-stamped barefoot bowls on price then expect to use them on a reen in a competition whether a state competition or an intra-club fun competition.

f it’s a competition accordin to the laws of the sport the bowls must be stamped and approved to ensure it is a fair competition for all whether the competition is club only or oes on to representative levels. he barefoot bowls purchaser may then have to pay twice for the initial barefoot set and a new le al set to pro ress. owls Queensland would like to make it clear we do not approve or endorse the new “barefoot bowls in any way.

of cial approved standardi ed ear must be used.

Bowls Australia prefers clubs seeking trendy colourful ear for barefooters to consider their new ack ttack kits approved endorsed and attractive albeit at a hi her price than the no-name barefoot sets . n si nin off for this month let me say thank you for the positive feedback we’ve received about the reports in last month’s owler about the rst six months of this year and the future of bowls. The Board will discuss a number of issue arising from this feedback and report back in ecember owler.

Umpire with Joan Brotherton

LAW BOOK Q&A The Lead in Team A delivers the jack and it passes the 2m mark and Team A’s Skip stops the jack and places it on the “T” presuming it will not go in the ditch. However, Skip B disagrees and states that it would have gone in the ditch. They decide to call the Umpire for their decision. s the ack in course was stopped by eam ’s kip the following Law applies: aw . . . a e f a ack in its ori inal course is displaced by a member of the team that delivered the ack the opposin lead must place the mat as described in aw . . and redeliver the ack makin sure that is centred but must not play rst. The Skip in Team A is busy talking at the head and accidently moves a bowl at rest with their foot but not enough to disturb the head. What will happen now? s eam ’s kip has moved the bowl at rest the followin applies:

aw

aw . . . a e f a bowl at rest or a toucher in the ditch is displaced by a player and it has not disturbed the head after it is displaced the opposin skip must put the bowl back to its former position. rule to remember when bowls acks are displaced whoever displaces a bowl ack or makes the mistake it is the opposition opponent that puts it back to its former position. here are some aws dependin on the situation where the opposing skip or opponent has various decisions to make. n the case of a bowl ack displacement by a neutral person or ob ect it is then both the skips and opponents that have to a ree as to the correct position of the bowl ack and if not the end is declared dead. hat is why it is a ood idea to always consult your Law Book or the Umpire and look at the situation in order of what transpired and nd the aw that relates to exactly what happened. ll the information can be found on a es to and there is also a bowl and ack displacement chart on a es to which provides a uick reference uide to assist you in decidin which action to take. A team has decided to enter a competition and after the entries have closed and the draw has been completed, however the day before the game, one member is too sick to play and another member has had an accident. They then want to use a Replacement Player and a Substitute. Can they do that? o. hey would have to forfeit the ame as they are both classed as ntended layers and the eplacement layer cannot be used until after the rst round and therefore they would not be able to use two ubstitutes. . . . a e ntended layer one whose entry has been accepted as a player team or side for a particular competition from the time entries close until the member is constituted. . . . a e eplacement layer a player who is appointed to take the place of a constituted player who cannot play

in any round after the rst round of that competition for a reason accepted by the Controllin ody. . . . a e nly one substitute will be allowed in a team at any time durin a ame pairs triples or fours . One of the players in Team A’s 2-Bowl Triples team decides that they would like to use 4 different bowls (that is – 2 bowls from 2 different sets) in the trial ends. The Umpire notices this and advises the player they cannot do that. Why? aw . . pa e ach player must not use more than the number of bowls bein used durin the ame. f a player or an umpire notices that a player is using more than the permitted number of bowls the defaultin player will loss the ri ht to play any bowls remainin to be played in the trial ends. herefore the ame was a - owl riples ame and only bowls could be used in the trial ends and not however the followin aw could have been used if the player decided to use bowl from different sets. aw . . a e ach player can use any combination of bowls taken from different sets of bowls. That is why the Umpire inspects the bowls when the trial ends are completed allowin a player to decide in this case which bowls they wish to play with as lon as they are from the same set and practicin with from each set allowed the player to choose after the trial ends were completed which they preferred. Team A wins the toss and commences the first trial end and then insists on going first in the second trial end. Team B objects stating that they should go first in the second trial end. Who is correct? eam

is correct.

aw . . a e he opponents of the team which started the rst trial end must start the second trial end. It is interesting to note here the following Law if you toss before the trial ends. aw . . a e f the coin is tossed before the start of the trial ends the option the winner of the toss chooses will apply to both the rst trial end and the rst end of the ame.

I hope that the foregoing is of help to you when playing your games and most probably some of these situations you have already experienced or seen happen but always remember that the mpire of the day is there to help you not only to measure shots in uestion but to answer any aw uestions or problems you may have so please do not hesitate to ask.

MITIGATING THE RISKS FOR EMPLOYERS

MULLINS LAWYERS

s you all know social media is a very relevant topic in today’s world.

way of regulating this is by having a detailed social media policy.

expressly in an employer’s contract of employment and social media policies.

The following article was written by my colleague Alan Strain who is Special Counsel in our mployment aw section.

State and Federal law places no speci c re ulatory limits on employer’s social media policies. eed into the mix that there is no statutory or common law ri ht to employee privacy and an employer has a number of tools in his kit ba to not ust view private social networking websites of employees but also to re ulate employees’ online behaviour when off duty.

t is not ood enou h to ust simply have a social media policy on the intranet or led away in some personnel le.

s of ctober the number of smartphones and devices on the planet exceeded the number of people on the planet. n ustralia alone there are million re ular acebook users and million active witter users. The risk to employers is that social media communication enables spontaneous interaction to an instant global audience in a format that can be saved or reposted to create a record that is almost impossible to control delete or amend.

The risk to employers is that social media communication enables spontaneous interaction to an instant global audience

Unregulated employee misuse or abuse of social media can lead to vicarious liability for an employer.

An employer can make clear what inappropriate posts are and what the conse uences are for doin them.

or example employees could be postin discriminatory bullyin or harassing content or defamatory content.

Issues will also arise with employees who leave employment and their continued use of social media including the likes of inked n which will usually have professional or business connections witter accounts and followers.

Bowls mentor launches unique manual “BOWLS, BIASED AND UNCENSORED” COACHING MASTERPLAN Bowler coaching columnist Ian Schuback OAM has brilliantly captured 30 years in the sport as a bowler, coach, mentor and commentator in his new book.

For the sake of the journey, I will refer to you becoming a “champion”.

“Bowls, Biased and Uncensored” is a masterplan from the four-time world champ about becoming a champion yourself (whatever that means to you).

Over the years, there have been many stories told about me, both positive and negative.

As a player, coach and commentator, I have been asked thousands of questions about bowls. All questions share a common characteristic, a lack of core knowledge. This is what my book is about, regardless of the level of bowls you play, socially, or internationally.

This is just a generic term for becoming the best you can be, whatever your aspirations.

I find the most useful way to deal with criticism is to turn it into a tool for increased motivation. I can be an arrogant so-and-so on the green, however I can look at myself in the mirror after and say honestly “I left nothing in the locker.” It’s all a mask. My book takes you behind the “mask” of a professional player. Reaching the highest level of a sport takes enormous sacrifice. Being on the road for three months out of every four, with the majority of my 15-year professional career spent flying or driving to yet another tournament, I missed the

Shoey’s book is full of valuable and inspiring tips, processes and tools to get you where you want to go in bowls.

“I was not lucky enough to have natural talent. My success came from pure hard slog and it cost me, financially, personally, emotionally and physically.” It includes some great photos and names of Queensland and Australian bowlers, why he rates them, and what you can learn from them. So skipping to Shoey’s last chapter, was it all worth it? “In a heartbeat. The Bowls. The Cancer. All of it.” About four years ago, I thought I had finally got through life’s challenges. I was commentating for the ABC, mentoring players and after finishing my time with Bowls Australia, I was writing this book. Then it all changed, no warning signs, in one week, two things happened. ABC cut Super Series, so I lost my job, and there was a spot in the middle of my shoulder blades.

important growing up years of my two daughters. Was it worth it and would I do it all again...? (You’ll have to read the last chapter of my book to find out...) I hope that whoever and whatever you are, this book will help you achieve your goals, whatever they may be. If you follow the knowledge I pass on, I know you will improve as a bowler, and also as a person.

“Bowls is unique. Bowls can never be truly mastered. Bowls is seriously addictive.” 34

I will never forget the specialist basically telling me to enjoy what time was left. Just when I was thinking my time as a competitor was over, I had a new opponent in the biggest tournament of my life. The “mask” was dragged out of the cupboard, dusty but comforting, in a journey of self-discovery, strange protocols, endless potions, and despair interjected with joy. I am still here. I feel great. I got to finish my book. I got to see my daughters married and spend time with the “grandies”. I hope you enjoy your time bowling through the book and it will help you become the player you always wanted to be. Shoey will explain more about “the mask” in his Bowler column next month. “Bowls, Biased and Uncensored” is a great read, insightful, inspiring, useful. Available from a bowls or book shop near you, or from publisher Slattery Media Group. RRP $29.95.
