MUSIC AND PERFORMING ARTS 2020 SE A S ON

WELCOME Welcome to the 2020 Season. This year the Conservatorium celebrates more than six decades of teaching and performance with a stellar line up featuring students, staff and alumni. We will launch the orchestral season with a performance of Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony, followed by a year-long showcase of remarkable repertoire that concludes with Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben. The Queensland Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra will also join forces with Opera Australia and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra to perform the world’s first fully digital production of Wagner’s Ring Cycle at QPAC. There will be on-stage roles for opera, acting and musical theatre students, with 15-hours of musical and vocal performances over four nights. We welcome back guest director Alister Smith who will direct a new production of musical theatre phenomenon, Wicked. This main stage musical will feature the entire musical theatre cohort, accompanied by the Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra. The second-year musical theatre students will tackle another Broadway hit, Legally Blonde, while our third year acting students will present the classic Australian play, Away, and Shakespeare’s comic fantasy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Professor of Opera and Orchestral Studies Maestro Johannes Fritzsch will conduct our production of Berlioz’s Béatrice et Bénédict, inspired by another of Shakespeare’s great comedies, Much Ado About Nothing. We welcome back Clocked Out and Ensemble Q as ensembles-in-residence. These ensembles provide a showcase for our renowned faculty, who are at the cutting edge of music-making in Australia and the world stage. Our contemporary approach to research, music performance and artistic practice will also be represented in a range of special events. Whether you join us for one of our free lunchtime concerts, a mainstage musical or an orchestral masterpiece, we look forward to welcoming you in 2020!

VAL MACHIN OPERA SCENES

DIDO AND AENEAS Henry Purcell’s dramatic work tells the compelling story of Dido, Queen of Carthage, and Aeneas, a Trojan hero. They fall madly in love, but an evil sorceress plots to cause the downfall of Carthage, and with that, the destruction of Dido and Aeneas’ love. Aeneas seeks to defy the gods in order to remain with his beloved Dido. Dido on the other hand, feels betrayed by his perceived disloyalty and her desperation triggers a chain of events that, like most operas, does not end well… Special thanks to Dr Glenda Powell OAM, whose long-standing support of the Val Machin Opera Scenes, named in memory of her mother, has continued to provide our emerging opera students with invaluable experiences at the Conservatorium. 10 MUSIC AND PERFORMING ARTS 2020 SEASON

BÉATRICE ET BÉNÉDICT Based on the Shakespeare classic, Much Ado About Nothing, Hector Berlioz’s Béatrice et Bénédict is a comic opera involving two very different pairs of lovers - the first, Claudio and Héro, are traditionally tender and loving, and the other, Béatrice and Bénédict, completely the opposite. The friction between this pair creates a timeless tale of secrets, lies, humour and mistaken identity. Set to Berlioz’s lush and romantic score, and conducted by Johannes Fritzsch, this is an opera that the whole family will enjoy. CONDUCTOR DIRECTOR

THE

RING CYCLE

Come on an exhilarating adventure with men and maidens, gods and giants, dragons and dwarves. As greed and violence threaten to destroy the heavens and earth, a glimmer of hope rises from an unexpected source. This is Wagner’s Ring Cycle — the pinnacle of opera — a 15-hour epic performed over four nights. Enjoy a week in sunny Queensland and see a spectacular new production by visionary Chinese director Chen Shi-Zheng. In 2020, he’ll explore Wagner’s legendary tale through a futuristic lens. His global vision imagines a parallel universe where many cultures walk together. Towering, moving digital panels create an immersive virtual world. Astonishing costumes and props imagine an unknown future. French conductor Philippe Auguin has conducted the Ring Cycle more than a dozen times. He leads a cast of international stars including Vitalij Kowaljow, Stefan Vinke and Allison Oakes. They join some of Australia’s most accomplished performers to bring you the memorable music of the Ring Cycle.

ELEGIES: A SONG CYCLE

BY WILLIAM FINN From the Tony Award winning composer of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Falsettos and Little Miss Sunshine, comes a show about death that’s full of life. Inspired by the events of 9/11, William Finn wrote a series of songs about the people, places and things most dear to him that have passed on. Elegies tells all of our stories as life and loss as a shared experience. Benjamin Franklin once said, there are only two certainties in life, death and taxes - and a show about taxes would be really boring! Elegies is a moving, funny, heartfelt, celebration of life and love. Not to be missed! DIRECTOR MUSICAL DIRECTOR
