TERRA: THE CREATION

for didgeridoo and chamber ensemble

Radithya Budi Theomarga

This piece commemorates about the formation of our Terra - or planet Earth - that happened about 4.5 billion years ago. Since its birth, it has been providing us the Four Elements of Matter – land, water, fire and sky –which us, human beings, have been surviving with its help throughout our lives. Therefore, as a homage to our beloved Terra, the musical elements presented throughout this piece represents the chemistry between the Four Elements of Matter to form the existence of our planet. Lastly, I invite my beloved audiences to interpret this piece according to their imaginations.

SIMPLE MINIATURES FOR PIANO

Ben Marshall

Miniature I

Interlude I

Miniature II

Interlude II

Miniature III

This work is a short series of miniatures aimed at being technically very straightforward, but in doing so encouraging the player to explore more intensely the musicality of each of the works. Each of the miniatures looks at different ways of treating notation and time while still remaining easily interpretable to the standard performer. The interludes function as both connective tissue between the miniatures themselves and also as an explanation of the techniques common throughout all three miniatures.

EVANESCENCE

Imogen Ferdinando

Evanescence - ‘the condition of lasting for a short period of time’.

Time is so precious, and we move between moments and experiences so quickly that sometimes we can only recall the essence of what was really felt. When I look back on my life, I want to know that I gave my all and that I chose to live my life with authenticity, vulnerability and honesty in each moment, sharing my experiences with those whom I love as that’s what makes life so special. I wrote this piece as a reminder to myself, and the listener, to stay present in this moment.

COLOURS OF A SHORT SUNSET

Maddy Ryan-Kerr

This piece is inspired by the different colours of the sunset. The opening piano and flute melody establish the light blue colour of the sky, contrasted by the motion of a lilting melody highlighting the colour yellow. The slower waltz creates a more dramatic change to purple, which eventually fades into a dark blue as the opening melody returns in the cello, with the final piano phrase illustrating the scattering of stars in the night sky.

JUST BE

I began writing this piece in 2020, inspired by Snarky Puppy's Shofukan. At the time, the title I fashioned was just a neat, somewhat ambiguous title, waiting for sound meaning to add dimension to its then fairly dimensionless essence. Now, two and a half years later, it carries an expression of the simplicity of freedom from the pressuring and constraint of identity we so often place upon ourselves. We are always told, "Be yourself!" and "Show me who you are!" ...but often even we don't know who we are. Thus, we search for ourselves outside of ourselves and create a collage of the outside that looks somewhat like us, but misses something... something fundamental yet inexplicable, without which our collage is not truly us. In response to this, I propose through this piece that we stop searching for who we are, stop trying to "be ourself" and "be us " ... and instead, just be. Because if you be, it'll be you who is doing the being, and so you'll unarguably be being you. So, be.

EVERYTHING YOU'VE EVER NEEDED

Everything you ' ve ever needed is a song from a musical. It explores the nature of contemporary masculinity and the challenges of finding purpose in spite of life’s continuous challenges.

JASMINE

Christopher James Jasmine is a piece for Flute and Piano

that is dedicated to my dog Jasmine who suddenly passed away last year. I wrote this piece at the height of my grief when I was struggling with her loss and the sudden change of her not being around the house anymore. Writing this piece was a way for me to say goodbye to my long-time friend and reflect on the wonderful memories we shared.

Piano: Ethan Coleman

LAZARUS

Inge Dekker

This work portrays the miraculous story of when Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. The piece first communicates the distress felt when Lazarus becomes sick and then the grief when he dies. The middle section begins by featuring soprano solos and then gradually more voices are added to represent not only Lazarus’ sisters (Mary and Martha) mourning his death, but also his friends and Jesus all weeping at his tomb together. In the final section, Jesus has the tombstone rolled away and commands Lazarus to “Come out!”

Finally, the tension is broken and resolved when Lazarus is miraculously brought back to life.
