An evocative improvised performance by the Magesca string trio.
VIOLIN: MADELINE RYAN-KERR
VIOLA: OSCAR NICHOLSON
CELLO: IMOGEN FERDINANDO
Originally written as a breathy atmospheric piece for solo piano, the textures and harmonic ideas present prompted me to rearrange it with more direct intentions. What followed was a proactive take on my original material, unravelling through each member of the now quartet orchestration.

This is an experimental piece exploring the sounds of a bowed vibraphone, where I want to explore transitioning between key signatures in a seamless way, creating a constant sound of peace

Revelation is a piece written for, and with consultance from my sister: Annabelle Allan. This piece depicts the inner turmoil of discovering a dark truth, a revelation about something that nobody should know. While I personally am not heavily invested in belief in conspiracy theories (and neither is my sister to my knowledge) they intrigue me, and this piece is my interpretation of what it could feel like to realise a piece of information that everybody is wilfully ignoring as it insidiously reveals the world's true dystopian state. As such, the piece is generally very dark and makes use of the cello's dark timbre, with fairly common use of chromaticism. In particular, some of this chromaticism brings some lighter shades of the original view of the world.

Doubtful Love, Salvation of Some was commissioned by the Queensland Conservatorium (I originally wrote it for a music theory assignment). After studying Italian madrigal I became intrigued by 5 part vocal harmony, this piece is my attempt at a madrigal style piece. I was heavily inspired by Luzzasco Luzzaschi’s Quivi Sospiri as well as Carlo Gesualdo’s Moro, lasso, al Mio Duolo (you’ll hear these influences though the chromaticism in the piece as well as chromatic harmony). Both of these pieces featured highly gruesome lyrics (in Italian) so I went searching for lyrics of a similar nature in Latin/ Italian but as I don’t speak either language splitting the words into their syllables would have been a nightmare. However, the language I do speak has an abundance of gruesome material featured in the bible, so I went through and selected lines from Isaiah 13 (6-16) and that makes up almost the entirety of the lyrics. I now invite you to listen to the haunting beauty of five-part vocal harmony that intertwines the macabre verses of Isaiah 13 with madrigal inspired chromatic tapestry.
This is a small snippet from a series of graphic scores currently being created. Within these scores, many lines are open for interpretation around which clefs to use, where the top and bottom of the staff is and the order to move from one line to the next. These decisions are left open to the performer. This movement explores the way time passes and deals with the concept of time passing regardless of what events occur.
PIANO: SHELBY DEVENISHInvincible Summer is a trio piece inspired by the famous Albert Camus Quote:
“In the midst of Winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible Summer”.
Its first movement deals with grief in its many forms, expressed as a theme and variations transformed via the first four stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining and depression. Through all of this turmoil, a faint ember of hope lies dormant in the form of a birdsong, suggesting a brighter future for all.
Thank you to my performers, and please stay tuned for the full piece!
