Margaret Baker Genovesi began her career in Brisbane whilst still a teenager and made her operatic début at the age of 20 in the role of Violetta in La Traviata for the Queensland National Opera. After winning scholarships in Italy to the Accademia di Santa Cecilia, Rome, and the Accademia Chigiana, Siena, she continued her studies in Germany, eventually settling in Rome, from where she pursued an international career as a singer and later teacher.
Her vast operatic and concert repertoire covered four centuries of European music, from the Baroque era to the twentieth century. Her European début was in the role of Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro (Rome); followed by leading roles at La Scala, Milan; Theater an der Wien, Vienna; Teatro all Cometa, Rome; the Victoria State Opera, Melbourne; Festival Hall, London; Tonhalle, Zürich; Suisse Romande, Lausanne; the Festivals of Vienna, Salzburg, Moscow, Brno, Spoleto; concert tours through Europe, Asia and the Middle East; and recitals for Europe's principal Radio-TV networks.
She performed and recorded with distinguished conductors such as Gianandrea Gavazzeni, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Peter Maag, Sir Charles Mackerras, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Sir David Willcocks, to name only the most renowned.
As a proud Queenslander, Margaret’s final wishes were to establish The Margaret Baker Genovesi Travel Scholarship, “to support young Queensland operatic talent from the Queensland Conservatorium to grow from excellent to exceptional by providing them with the opportunity to travel, to learn and absorb European languages, and seek out international vocal tuition of the highest standard.”
The Margaret Baker Genovesi Travel Scholarship has been established to support the classical voice students of Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, who wish to pursue a career in operatic performance, to study language abroad in the European Continent, and vocal tuition on the European Continent or the UK or North America.
Professor Bernard Lanskey was previously Dean of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music at the National University of Singapore. Prior to his appointment in Singapore, he was the Assistant Director of Music (Head of Ensembles and Postgraduate Programmes) from 1994-2006 at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama London, where he was awarded a Fellowship (FGSM) in 2001. His research interests derive from his longstanding activity as a collaborative pianist and chamber music coach, focusing particularly on exploring the vital role played by metaphor and gesture in the pedagogical process or in performance preparation.
Cheryl Barker AO has established a distinguished Operatic Career throughout the UK, Europe, USA and Australasia.
She has performed for the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, English National Opera, Welsh National Opera, Paris Opera, Nederlandse Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Hamburg State Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Grand Théâtre de Genève, National Opera du Rhin, De Vlaamse Opera, La Monnaie, Opera Holland Park, Reis Opera, Scottish Opera, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Minnesota Opera, Vancouver Opera, Taipei Opera, Opera Queensland, Opera Australia, State Opera of South Australia, Opera New Zealand, Victoria State Opera and Western Australian Opera.
Cheryl was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in the 2015 Queen’s Birthday Honours and also holds an Honorary doctorate of Music conferred by the Victorian College of the Arts.
Moffatt Oxenbould AM has contributed to the development of opera in Australia and Opera Australia (OA) spanning a period of more than fifty years. He was Artistic Director of Opera Australia from 1984 – 1999, during which time he also directed a number of milestone productions for the company including Il trittico, Madama Butterfly, La bohème, Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia. Having retired from the position of Artistic Director of Opera Australia at the end of 1999, he continued an active role as an Opera Director and Broadcaster. Moffatt was awarded an AM for his services to Opera in 1985 and was the recipient of the Inaugural Dame Joan Hammond Award, in recognition of his contribution to opera.
