Andrew McNaughton is multi-instrumentalist, composer, songwriter and teacher who has performed and recorded for more than 30 years in more than 20 countries. His performance experiences range from the World Expo in Hanover, Gorky Park in Moscow and the International Trumpet Guild in New York to the Goethe Institutes of Kazakhstan and Mongolia, and the Edinburgh Royal Military Tattoo in Sydney, as well as venues from Norway to Italy including Porgy and Bess in Vienna, A-Trane in Berlin, Pod Filarmi in Poland and the Unterfahrt in Munich. As a composer, arranger, songwriter and sound designer, highlights include commissions and performances for the Australasian Clarinet and Saxophone Conference (Brisbane); Das Sinfonische Blasorchester des MON, Luz Amoi, and Unterbiberger Hofmusik (Germany), El Tanbura (Egypt), the International Trumpet Guild (New York), Musica Viva Australia, and the Royal Australian Air Force, among others. He has also written for theatre productions such as Gloria (Queensland Theatre Company), The Daylight Atheist and Hinterland (both for Melbourne Theatre Company) and Ruby Moon (Playbox Theatre Company). He was commissioned by QPAC last year as composer and lyricist to turn Matt Ryan’s play, Brisbane into the new Australian musical, Danny Fisher.
He is currently a sessional staff member at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and has recently embarked on a PhD. Peter Walters has worked as a freelance bassist in almost every setting from traditional jazz and blues to contemporary styles and from his early twenties he began playing with groups as diverse as the avant-garde Musikki Oy to rhythm and blues legends Wiley Reed and Phil Manning, and the original rock group Strangelife. In the nineties he performed and recorded with Tony Hobbs' Big Band Theory, worked in S.E.Asia and Japan and was house bassist and leader of house band 'Hothouse' at the jazz club "The Bassnote". He played support to Wynton Marsalis, Trilok Gurtu, Joe Jackson, Joe Satriani. and toured with Diana Krall on her 2006 Australian tour. He has performed with Annie Ross from Lambert, Hendricks and Ross fame, bebop legend Sheila Jordan, Australia's great jazz singers Vince Jones and Kerrie Biddell, post-bop saxophonists Clifford Jordon, Johnny Griffin and Don Menza, German pianist Joachim Kuhn, Sting's pianist Jason Rebello, Venessa Rubin, Richie Cole, James Morrison and Don Burrows and a host of others. He has composed for ABC and SBS documentaries such as Black Soldier Blues and The Trouble With St Mary's and has performed on scores of albums. From 1992 to the present, he has tutored in contemporary and jazz bass at The Queensland Conservatorium, QUT, and the University of Central Queensland guiding hundreds of students of the bass to graduation. Peter has a Master of Music (Composition) and continues to write and arrange for large and small ensembles at his secret hideaway in the mountains.
Dave Spicer is very active within the contemporary music scene in Australia and shares an equal love for performing and educating. As a performer Dave has numerous recordings, television, radio and festival appearances to credit. Dave has been an award winner and finalist for many competitions including the Australian National Jazz Awards - Australia’s most prestigious award which only features piano every 7 years. Dave is on call to play (and has played) with many of Australia’s leading artists. In recent years music has taken Dave to America, United Kingdom, Ireland, Paris, regional France, New Zealand, Singapore and Papua New Guinea. As an educator Dave holds double Masters degrees in Contemporary Piano and Voice performance and is currently teaching at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University. Dave is an official Kawai artist and plays Kawai instruments.
Paul Hudson started playing drums at 8 years old. Since then a variety of teachers have instructed him, and in 1986 he graduated from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music with a Diploma of Music – Percussion Major. He travelled with the Conservatorium Percussion Ensemble to the International Youth Music Festival in Aberdeen, Scotland, in 1985. Following graduation came a variety of performances with Showstopper backing artists such as: Donny Rae Evans, Venetta Fields, Jackie Love, James Morrison and he has worked together with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra as well as a variety of jazz gigs with local, interstate and international artists including George Cables, Bernie McGann, Sandy Evans, Ernie Watts, Jimmy Whitherspoon, Darryl Grant, Sheila Jordan, Jason Robello, Don Borrows, Mike Nock and many others.
In 1992 he travelled to Spain to perform for 6 months at the World Expo in Seville playing original music, rock and country performances. During this time he undertook further tuition in the U.K. with Bob Armstrong for 6 months. In 2000, he performed with other Australian musicians during 5 months at the Hannover World Expo in Germany. Since returning to Australia, Paul has worked on a variety of gigs including: Hammond Organ Trio, numerous jazz, swing and rock gigs with local and interstate artists, Tommy Tycho, David Bentley, Leah Cotterell, Sharney Russell, Grace Knight, Rhonda Burchmore, Vince Genova, John Hoffmann, Frank Bennett and Katie Noonan to name a few. Musical and theatre work also include the Brisbane seasons for Crazy For You, Hot Shoe Shuffle, Fame, Annie, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe amongst others. Kristina Kelman has been gracing Australian stages for nearly 30years. She began her career in the early 90s touring internationally with Brisbane's beloved jazz vocal ensemble SCAT! before appearing with some of Brisbane's best blues and funk bands to large festival audiences and corporate events. In the last couple of years, Kristina has been fronting various big bands up and down the coast, entertaining audiences with her love for the swing era. In 2015, Kristina was commissioned by Rhondalay Music (USAK) to produce a Christmas album in tribute to the late Frank Pooler, who was most notable for his work discovering and producing the Carpenters. Kristina is also an academic and senior lecturer in music at QUT. Her research focuses on the education of the aspiring professional. Her book, Music Entrepreneurship: Professional Learning in Schools and the Industry was published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2020. She still enjoys teaching voice, having received her masters in vocal pedagogy at the Conservatorium in 2000. Kristina also has a passion for choral music and has toured award-winning choirs internationally, with a strong emphasis on vocal jazz and contemporary art music.
