Griffith University is proud to present the Class of 2023
Welcome
It is a personal pleasure to be acknowledging the contributions and impact of the graduating cohort of Musical Theatre and Acting students at the time of their final showcase. I first saw their work just over two years ago, just as they began to demonstrate the outcomes of the initial stages of their studies through their earliest productions. It was the first time I had seen Acting students in the Conservatorium, but already their work showed incredible promise. For those of Musical Theatre, 2021 involved the first connection to QPAC which is now their home. While the QPAC shows were game-changing, I remember more the first dress rehearsal of Grease, soon after my arrival (the COVID-affected performances), and the impact of the lines in the title song: “We start believing now we can believe who we are “ - these words seemed so apt, not only for the students as they sang them, but for us all in Queensland, just after the announcement of the Olympic Games. For both cohorts, you will see tonight that not only do they now believe but so do we.
The period in between has been one of particularly profound change and growth for these two groups of students and for the staff who have helped them on their journey. To all staff, thank you for your contributions, whether in direct teaching or in supporting the project and the multiple productions, both at Burke Street, and beyond!
With the announcement of the Queensland Academy of Excellence in Musical Theatre, this performance will also mark a major turning point for the Conservatorium’s Performing Arts department. We believe the move - for Musical Theatre to QPAC and for Acting to South Bank - offers transformative potential for both areas. Thank you to QPAC for offering the privilege of connection (and not only for Musical Theatre!) and to the university for believing.
Given this evolution, I want here to acknowledge Professor Paul Sabey in particular for his establishment and leadership of the two projects from their inception to a place of national and international reputation. Paul’s contributions to the wider Conservatorium have also been profound, and I am sure our connection will continue to be very close.
We look forward also to welcoming Jacqui Somerville and the actors as they become part of our S01 troupe, moving Music and Acting closer together. This is of course a natural synergy, recognised across many cultures and periods. To the university, we thank you for your support for our work, not only through its resourcing but more importantly for your direct engagement and clear commitment.
Perhaps even more than usual, these performances mark both an ending and a fresh beginning. We wish the students well in their future adventures and look forward to coming to know of their progress. I have no doubt the show will be wonderful, as indeed has been the involvement of the students on show.
Director, Professor Bernard Lanskey Queensland Conservatorium Griffith UniversityIn February 2021 we welcomed our eleventh group of Bachelor of Musical Theatre students to the Queensland Conservatorium as well as our fourth group of Bachelor of Acting students. Three years later, we are extremely proud to be showcasing them to you today.
Our students are given a world-class performing arts education and are ready to make their mark when they graduate. We are all grateful for the tremendous support we receive from Griffith University senior leadership, enabling our boutique and bespoke programs to thrive.
There have been too many highlights over the last three years to list, however I would like to take this opportunity to name a few... As You Like It, The Pajama Game, Pash, Heathers the Musical, Festen, Working: Localised, Oresteia, and Cry-Baby the Musical
I would like to thank the team who have joined me in shaping today’s performance and to the many faculty members who have nurtured the students over the past three years. My gratitude also goes to the talented students who have entrusted their training to us.
Earlier this year, the musical theatre department moved to their new home here in the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) and have since been enjoying the many opportunities this incredible opportunity has provided. Our thanks go to John Kotzas, CEO, and all his team at QPAC.
In August, the Vice Chancellor announced the commencement of the Queensland Academy of Excellence in Musical Theatre. Supported by Michael Cassel (producer), John Frost (producer), Stephen Schwartz (composer), Claude-Michel Schönberg (composer), Dame Judi Dench (actress), and, in partnership with QPAC, the Academy will see musical theatre students working closer with ‘industry’ in class, performance, and engagement.
I am equally excited to see the relocation of the acting department to the Queensland Conservatorium on South Bank at the end of the year. This move will provide acting students with an opportunity to work closer with the Griffith Film School, and other students at the Conservatorium. We thank the University for its commitment to improving the learning/working environment for both staff and students.
2023 ends part of a journey that I am incredibly proud of. Back in 2010, the university entrusted me with starting the Musical Theatre program and delivering an education to students that would help change the musical theatre eco-system of Brisbane and beyond. We set up home in Woolloongabba in studios that seemed palatial compared to the many spaces dotted around the city we had been using; palatial, that is, until it rained! We weathered hailstorms, flooding, power outages, ceilings falling, pest invasions, but that didn’t stop the determination we had to succeed. Remember the saying, The Show Must Go On!... it did! We rebranded as the Performing Arts department when the Acting program was introduced in 2018, and we grew. Many of you reading this will have played a part in our development, by either working for us, studying with us, attending our many performances, or managing us. So, as we close the door on ‘Act 1’, it is with excitement and a great deal of pride that we move to our new homes. I would like to thank Jacqui Somerville, and wish her and the team every success with the Acting program. To the Musical Theatre team, now working in the Queensland Academy of Excellence in Musical Theatre, I say let’s begin Act 2 with the knowledge that we’ve done an incredible job, but we still have an exciting ‘script’ to write.
The Showcase, although performed in one act, is in two parts - Acting students, followed by the Musical Theatre students. It has been filmed, and will be shared with agents, casting directors, and other industry professionals unable to join us in person.
We hope that you enjoy the performance and continue to follow the careers of these young artists. We thank you very much for your support and for sharing this occasion with us and look forward to welcoming you to future events.
