Salzburg is one of our favorite towns along the itinerary. The city springs to life, as it is our home for the next two nights. The "Salt Fortress," as the city's name is literally translated, is Austria's fourth largest but both the old and the new city are perfectly sized for exploration. The "Old Town" features baroque architecture and is one of the best preserved city centers north of the Alps. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, Salzburg boasts a number of notable settings we will explore. Innsbruck, Austria City: Innsbruck Federal State: Tyrol Innsbruck is located about half way between Munich and Verona, in the broad valley between three high mountains: the Nordkette (7,657 feet) in the north, Patscherkofel (7,369 ft) and Serles (8,917 ft) in the south. The city's name comes from the root words of Inn and Bridge (Bruck) which has the same root as the modern German word, "Brücke," meaning bridge, which leads to "the bridge over the Inn." Exploring Lucerne at Your Leisure City: Lucerne, Switzerland Lucerne, the gateway to central Switzerland, situated on Lake Lucerne, is embedded within an impressive mountainous panorama. Thanks to its attractions, its souvenir and watch shops, the beautiful lakeside setting and the nearby excursion mountains of the Rigi, Pilatus and Stanserhorn, the town is a destination for our small group of travelers on our journey through central Switzerland. Complete with gable paintings, the covered, medieval Chapel Bridge forms the centrepiece of Lucerne's townscape and is considered to be one of the oldest, covered wooden bridges in Europe. A further landmark of the town is the Museggmauer, a wall which, with the exception of only one of its towers, has been preserved in its original, well-fortified state. Historic houses decorated with frescoes line the picturesque town squares as they do the 'Weinmarkt' square in the carfree old town. Lucerne is a city of town squares and churches. The Jesuit church dating from the 17th century is regarded as Switzerland's first sacral Baroque building and the twin towers of the Hofkirche form an integral part of the townscape. The figure of a dying lion, which was hewn from rock in remembrance of the heroic death of Swiss guards killed during an attack on the Tuileries in 1792, is one of the best-known monuments in Switzerland. . It's a day filled with spectacular scenery as we are bound for Zermatt. We arrive the town of Taesch where we board a cogwheel train that will take us high into the mountains to the carfree village of Zermatt, our home for the next two evenings. Zermatt lies at the foot of the world's most famous mountainx, the Matterhorn. The town is a car-free zone and has preserved its original character over the years. The region called Matterhorn glacier paradise is Europe's largest and highest summer skiing region. Numerous national ski teams train here during the summer months. The region is legendary amongst mountaineers: the Haute Route, a challenging international route that takes several days to complete, leads from Mont Blanc to Zermatt. Over 248 miles of hiking trails lead through and out of the Matter Valley, including the mule traders' trails, which date back to the 13th century.
