Partnering with Queensland Music Festival
TRANSFORMING LIVES THROUGH MUSIC
QMF has redefined the traditional festival model Queensland Music Festival (QMF) is a statewide celebration of musical excellence with an international reputation and an unparalleled geographic reach. The best of local, national and international talent bring every conceivable style of music to Queenslanders from all walks of life, in Brisbane and in regional and remote centres from the Torres Strait to the Gold Coast. Since 1999 the Festival has engaged audiences of more than a million people through projects in 78 regions across the State. QMF has redefined the traditional festival model to engage deeply with communities over time, igniting artistic potential and leaving a lasting legacy. In collaboration with councils and communities, QMF inspires participation in music-making and performances that reflect local culture and tell local stories.

These include the World’s Biggest Orchestra in Brisbane, Boomtown in Gladstone, Behind The Cane in Bowen, Ailan Kores on Thursday Island, the Cape York Instrumental Project in Aurukun, Hopevale and Coen, Heart of an Open Country in Tambo and the establishment of the Yarrabah Band Festival and revival of the Yarrabah Brass Band in Far North Queensland. At QMF, we seek to deepen and broaden our partner relationships for the benefit of all of our stakeholders. Our vision is to transform lives through unforgettable musical experiences. Partnering with QMF presents an opportunity to support this extraordinary vision, inspiring communities and creating lasting impacts across the State.

MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Music is something fundamental to the human experience, it speaks directly to our very being without the need for translation, without regard for age, gender, race or status – music can just ‘move’ you. Access to quality musical entertainment, education and engagement opportunities is something that many of us take for granted. There is a growing body of research on the broader benefits that participation in music programs can deliver in areas such as health, education and social cohesion. For many in remote or marginalised areas, opportunities to engage through music are limited, and these are often the places where the need is greatest.
ways that are only possible through music and a number of projects see whole communities unite in celebration to tell their story.
The Festival occurs over three weeks every two years but our projects are developed over a 24 month period. During the Festival period, the state comes alive with an awe-inspiring array of local, national and international talent. It is now a chance for people to connect in
Being a musician is a privilege and I am proud that QMF is building such an important legacy. Help us to make a difference through music by supporting QMF and investing in the economic, social and cultural wellbeing of communities throughout the state.
QMF develops communities through music, bringing the best Australian and international talent to work hand in hand with people in regional, remote and disadvantaged areas, as well as in metropolitan Brisbane. Our projects teach skills, build community capacity and foster a greater sense of connectedness.

QMF HISTORY The origins of the Queensland Music Festival date back more than 20 years, as the Brisbane Biennial Festival of Music. In 1999 the Festival became the Queensland Biennial Festival of Music and in 2005 was re-branded as Queensland Music Festival. Past and present Artistic Directors include luminaries of the Australian musical landscape:
• Anthony Steel AM (1991 - 1993) • Sir Jonathon Mills AO & Richard Mills AM (1995 - 1997) • Simone de Haan (1999) • Lyndon Terracini AM (2001 - 2005) • Paul Grabowsky AO (2007) • Deborah Conway (2009 - 2011) • James Morrison AM (2013 - current) Over time, QMF has redefined its role to reflect an increased focus on capacity-building through in-depth community engagement. Sustained activity over a 24 month cycle allows the organisation to be actively involved with communities in the planning, development and presentation of world class community cultural projects.
about QMF Led by Artistic Director James Morrison and Executive Director Nigel Lavender, the QMF Team brings a high level of professionalism across all areas of program delivery, management, marketing and development. QMF is a not-for-profit company governed by a Board of Directors. Our Principal Partners, Arts Queensland, the Australia Council for the Arts and Brisbane City Council, provide base funding for our core projects, alongside Local Government partnerships which underpin our regional programs. To sustain community impacts across the State, QMF must raise more than 50% of its budget through corporate partnerships, philanthropic partnerships, donations and grants. QMF has also established valuable relationships with major universities including University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology and Griffith University in the delivery of festival events and research projects.

MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS
Brand Profile In 2013, QMF continued to build on our brand profile throughout the state by heavily focusing on our strapline ‘LIVE MUSIC STATEWIDE’. This strapline was used throughout all QMF print collateral, television, signage, merchandise, website and social media activity to ensure brand consistency. The 2013 design concept symbolised ‘Queensland’ as a stage – bursting with fun, music and excitement. The concept was unique and creatively represented each event in the festival program.
PUBLICITY In 2013, Queensland Music Festival achieved significant national media coverage across print, online, radio and television, reaching an accumulated audience/circulation of 43,354,200. A total of 1,950 festival-related articles generated an Advertising Space Rate (ASR) value of $4,865,099. The publicity campaign commenced in February 2013 with the announcement of the World’s Biggest Orchestra Challenge. QMF announced its centrepiece show, How Deep Is Your Love, prior to the official program, which launched late-May 2013.
Printed Collateral & Distribution In 2013, 40,000 printed copies of the 64page QMF program guide were distributed via Posterbill, festival venues, information booths, local council, QMF database and targeted locations state-wide. Over 430,000 copies of the 8-page QMF highlights program lift-out were placed in The Sunday-Mail’s U on Sunday, which attracted a readership of just over 960,000. Thirty-six individual event specific marketing campaigns saw over 12,200 posters, 20,000 pocket guides and 122,800 flyers printed and distributed state-wide.

COVERING QUEENSLAND Since 1999 QMF has worked in 78 locations across Queensland and as the largest music festival by land mass in the world, we offer our partners choice, flexibility and access to a wide range of key target audiences. The Festival delivers spectacular community engagement projects of the highest standard. With a stated approach to create projects with communities, for communities and by communities, we invest the time needed to engage with people in remote areas and build a strong foundation of trust, skills and communication. This powerfully combines to achieve musical excellence, cultural significance and community impact. Our feedback and evaluation attests that alongside a continually growing national profile, the Festival is achieving significant outcomes for audiences, communities and stakeholders across the State. Opera at Jimbour, QMF 2011. Photo Sean Young.
The Tim Fairfax Family Foundation shares a common goal with Queensland Music Festival to afford rural, remote and regional Queenslanders opportunities equal to their metropolitan counterparts. We support the Festival’s ambition to sustain and grow its engagement programs and we are very pleased with the strength and breadth of community impacts across the State. Samantha Jorgensen Executive Officer Tim Fairfax Family Foundation
Boomtown is a pivotal moment for us. What we are going to see out of this is a new pride in the region, a new pride in the city and a new pride in our ability. Mayor Gail Sellers Gladstone Regional Council Boomtown, QMF 2013
EXCELLENCE AND ACCESSIBILITY The scope of our projects reflects the sheer size of Queensland. Achieving accessibility and excellence in equal measure is demanding, exciting and challenging and is realised through using worlds-best musicians and teaching artists wherever the Festival operates. Partnerships are central to realising the aspirations of communities throughout Queensland. QMF and our partners share a collective vision to make a difference to the quality of life in Queensland.

CORPORATE PARTNERSHIPS QMF provides significant opportunities for branding and publicity, as well as connecting audiences with our business partners. We invite your company to begin a new partnership with the Queensland Music Festival by collaborating with us through:
• Positive brand alignment • Access to state-wide and local audiences • Building awareness and giving back to the community • Broad media coverage – national and local • Recognition across an extensive marketing campaign • Promotional signage at events • Evaluation and research outcomes • Access to influential corporate and local, state and federal government representatives
CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives are widely understood to provide meaningful benefits to society and to a company’s business outcomes. QMF’s commitment to long term engagement and capacity building is a valuable investment in local people and local communities resulting in real and tangible social and cultural outcomes. If your business is looking for a way to engage with the community and deliver benefits to both your organisation and to society, talk to us about linking your business strategy and CSR activities to QMF projects and events. QMF provides an excellent return on investments made by our partners. Festival events strengthen local confidence, leave a substantial legacy of skills development and identify and bring together networks of local arts practitioners and community members. The outcome of this is a notable increase in the capacity of individual communities to be proactive in the development of cultural activities in their own regions once the Festival has left town.
• Generous corporate hospitality and ticketing packages For more information or to discuss partnering with QMF please contact the Development Director, Simon Buchanan on 3010 6613 or simon@qmf.org.au

A DONATION TO TRANSFORM COMMUNITIES Queensland communities face a whole spectrum of issues including geographic isolation, socio-economic stress, racial tensions and lack of access to education opportunities. There are currently many projects underway throughout Queensland that will continue through to the 2015 Festival, and are dedicated to making a difference through music. In addition to this, most of QMF’s events are delivered free to communities, particularly to the regional and remote areas of the State. Our work would not be possible without the continually growing assistance from philanthropic foundations and generous individuals who appreciate the role the Festival plays in transforming lives through unforgettable musical experiences. If you are interested in supporting our community projects through the QMF Transformations Fund, or would like to find out more about our initiatives, please contact Nusch Herman, Development Executive on 3010 6614 or nusch@qmf.org.au. As a Deductible Gift Recipient and Tax Concession Charity, donations made to the QMF Transformations Fund are entirely directed to community programming and do not go towards administration costs or salaries.
Your commitment and support to share our vision has resulted in one of our most successful partnerships to date. I hope you recognise your important contribution to the future wellbeing of Cape York’s Indigenous youth. Noel Pearson Chairman, Cape York Aboriginal Australian Academy
