MESSAGE FROM THE HON. LEEANNE ENOCH MP

The 2019 Youth Touring program promises to captivate children across the State with quality performing arts in their schools. This engaging program, delivered by Queensland Music Festival since 2016 with support from the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland, has inspired young people for more than 50 years. Importantly, the program is tailored for schools and strongly linked to the Australian National Curriculum, providing young people with quality arts experiences that encourage creativity, provide a safe place to explore social issues, while also enhancing learning outcomes. Highlighting the power of storytelling, this year’s program features My Story, Your Story which considers the different experiences in a remote Indigenous community and the big city, and Kitch Culture recounts the story of performer and proud Samoan Kitchener Wesche, his family tree and rich cultural history. In An Experiment with The White Earth students will gain a deeper understanding of ‘The White Earth’, an award-winning book by Queensland author Andrew McGahan set at a time when Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander land rights were being debated. Students will also appreciate Hoods a dramatic tale of survival and solidarity against the odds, Brymore Productions’ Bureau of Untold Stories will explore some of the world’s missing stories, and scientist, entertainer and teacher Richard Scholes will present The Magical World of Crazy Science and Wild Weather, whilst Junkyard Beats returns with a brand new interactive music performance, Beats Alive! I encourage you to embrace the rich arts and learning experiences Youth Touring’s wonderful productions can provide Queensland students in 2019. The Hon. Leeanne Enoch MP Minister for Environment and the Great Barrier Reef, Minister for Science and Minister for the Arts

MESSAGE FROM KATIE NOONAN

In 2019, Youth Touring continues its legacy and commitment to providing high quality Arts-in-Education opportunities for Queensland students, delivering a year-round program of transformative experiences for young audiences throughout the State. As a Queensland artist whose love of music and live performance was ignited by touring Arts Council shows as a young student myself, I am a huge believer in the vitalness of Arts-in-Education. In addition to positively impacting students’ learning in the classroom, The Arts supports development in all elements of young people’s lives, including fostering an enhanced sense of belonging and self, imparting empathy and compassion, and teaching important life skills for the future. This year’s program of nine compelling works for young people is focused on IMPACT, with a diverse mix of performances and experiences designed to challenge students’ perceptions of Science, Mathematics, History, English and The Arts, as well as nurturing a deeper cultural awareness and understanding. Our approach fosters inclusivity and accessibility, recognising the role of The Arts in our school curriculum, but also as a strong pedagogical tool to enhance learning. I am very proud that Queensland Music Festival and the Queensland Government, through Arts Queensland, are continuing the legacy of this program for young hearts and minds to be inspired. We look forward to visiting your school in the near future. Katie Noonan Artistic Director Queensland Music Festival

MY STORY, YOUR STORY Everyone has a story worth telling Jesse’s family has always loved singing, dancing and telling stories. When a talent scout visits their remote Indigenous community and picks Jesse out from the rest, it seems like the opportunity of a lifetime. But being away from home is not easy, and city life is not quite what Jesse expected. It is only when Jesse meets Sam, they both learn that everyone’s story is important. Covering themes of friendship, family, acceptance, storytelling and courage, My Story, Your Story will take students on a journey from remote Indigenous communities to the big city. Incorporating a variety of language conventions, including spoken word, poetry, song and Aboriginal language, as well as traditional dance and rhythm making, this piece of Indigenous theatre (performed in-the-round) highlights the importance of cultural identity and individuality. *My Story, Your Story is touring in tandem with Hoods

HOODS A suburban tale of survival and solidarity against the odds From the writer of Children of the Black Skirt comes a contemporary tale inspired by Hansel and Gretel. Each night, two hoods ride a train to a wrecking yard on the outskirts of the city. Here, in this cemetery of stories, they are storytellers with the power to fast forward, pause and rewind time. Tonight, they tell the story of three kids left in a car. Siblings Kyle, Jessie and baby brother Troy are left waiting for their mum. As night approaches, the car park takes on a dark and sinister aspect filled with strange and familiar characters. Exploring issues of poverty and family violence, Hoods is a suburban tale of survival and solidarity against the odds. Hoods is listed in the 2019 senior drama syllabus as a suggested text. *Hoods is touring in tandem with My Story, Your Story

AN EXPERIMENT WITH THE WHITE EARTH A haunting story of belonging and connection Set in the early 1990s, The White Earth follows the High Court’s ruling in the Mabo decision and the furious Parliamentary debates over Native Title. After witnessing his father’s death, William goes to live with his mother at the invitation of an elderly and unfamiliar uncle, who is seeking an heir. Desperate to revive the station, William’s mother craves wealth and security - but their family’s history threatens to splinter their relationship and the land that they claim as ‘theirs’. Part adaptation and part commentary, this two-person experiment by awardwinning Queenslander, Marcel Downey employs multiple performance modes to assist students in gaining a deeper understanding of the themes and characters of Andrew McGahan’s award-winning book The White Earth (adapted for the stage by Andrew McGahan and Shaun Charles), as well as providing a clear illustration of different modes of storytelling and their uses in performance. OUTREACH INITIATIVE

Youth Touring is calling out to donors and large metropolitan schools to help take high-quality arts performances to students in rural and remote classrooms through its Outreach initiative. Youth Touring is Queensland’s premier Arts-in-Education program that brings some of Australia’s most exciting award-winning artists and works into classrooms across the State. Regional schools often face challenges accessing high-quality arts education experiences because of their geographic remoteness, school size and financial pressures on school resourcing. Now, schools that participate in Youth Touring’s Outreach initiative can enable smaller regional and remote schools to access a performance from the 2019 Youth Touring line-up. St Peters Lutheran College in the Brisbane suburb of Indooroopilly was the first school to sign up for Outreach and sponsored the regional travel of Ruby Moon and The Didjeribone Show performances for the students at Good Shepherd Catholic College and Spinifex State College in Mount Isa, and Goondiwindi State High School and St George Primary school in 2018. “Participating in high-quality, live arts experiences to support the curriculum is not only an excellent way to engage and extend students in their learning, but also central to the growth and development of the cultural capital of school communities. We at St Peters Lutheran College are so fortunate to have access to a wide variety of live arts experiences and to see, first-hand, the transformative power these experiences have on the lives and learning of the diverse members of our community. By partnering with QMF and Youth Touring, St Peters Lutheran College (Indooroopilly) supported both artists and arts organisations in connecting with regional and remote school communities, ensuring these powerful opportunities were made available to more students.” Nicholas Trethan, St Peters Lutheran College Drama Teacher

If your school would like to participate in the Outreach initiative, contact the Youth Touring Manager, Laura Bonner, on 07 3010 6623 or by emailing youthtouring@qmf.org.au
