ABOUT QUEENSLAND MUSIC F E S T I VA L TRANSFORMING LIVES AND COMMUNITIES THROUGH MUSIC Over three weeks in July, Queensland Music Festival (QMF) brings unforgettable music experiences to cities, regions and remote corners of Queensland. QMF offers Queenslanders the chance to hear and be heard, with a rich tapestry of musical experiences designed to uncover and empower young musicians, create world-class music in regional communities, and shed light on current social issues.

2

This year’s Festival is not just about bringing music to audiences – everyone is invited to get involved too! Projects such as You’re The Voice and The Power Within will exemplify how music brings people together to create positive change in communities, while others featuring internationally acclaimed artists will captivate audiences with world premiere performances.

Our music education programs and school touring programs provide access to high quality arts programming, especially for regional and remote students. QMF is passionate about working with communities to inspire creativity, ignite artistic potential and collaborate on musical projects that live on long after the final notes have sounded.

Queensland Music Festival is an extraordinary celebration of music bringing the best talent to our towns, cities, regions and remote centres from the Torres Strait to the Gold Coast. Some of Australia’s finest female singer-songwriters and emerging talent will shine at the Songs That Made Me concerts, and Queensland cellist Louise King promises entertaining regional concerts with Bach to Bush. You’re The Voice will unite choirs in a mass rendition of John Farnham’s anthem to take a stand on the issue of domestic violence.

QMF is proud to work with communities throughout the state, engaging Queenslanders from all walks of life through a diverse program. Increasingly, the broader impact of arts engagement is being recognised, and QMF 2017 exemplifies how music can contribute to creating safer, more caring and more cohesive communities. Gender equity, domestic and family violence, and fostering resilience in communities facing difficult times are just some of the issues explored through Katie Noonan’s first QMF program.

The Isaac community will present The Power Within, an outdoor spectacular in Moranbah, while the Cape York Instrumental Program inspires students from Aurukun State School and Cape York Academy school campuses for a public performance as part of the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair.

As always, music is at the heart of everything we do. From large-scale community participation projects to world premiere performances by internationally renowned musicians, we are thrilled to present a stellar program that embraces music in all its diversity.

The Queensland Government supports QMF through Arts Queensland and is proud to help realise a program that brings the joy of music to Queenslanders while also supporting social cohesion, engaging our youth and revitalising communities.

When we join together with a shared vision and united voice, anything is possible.

M ESSA G E FR OM T H E A RTI STIC DIR E C TO R Hear and Be Heard. My hope for QMF 2017 is that Queenslanders from all walks of life will find their voice through music and that the power of song will help to shine a light on issues that impact us all. I am passionate about creating transformative musical experiences for audiences throughout our state. As a Queensland artist whose own career was kickstarted by QMF, I want to help the next generation of artists thrive. Across the Festival, talented Queenslanders will take the stage, standing proudly alongside world-class Australian musicians. No one does it like QMF – I believe our community engagement and education legacy is unrivalled. Our extensive program spans community, contemporary, classical and education events right across this big, beautiful state, involving a huge range of Queenslanders. There are also many amongst us whose stories have been untold for too long. There has been an overwhelming groundswell of support from our many partners to help give voice to those who face significant challenges in their lives through projects like You’re The Voice. To our many participants, artists, partners and communities, thank you for being part of this amazing journey – I can’t wait to hear your song!

ACCLAIMED SINGER-SONGWRITER JACK CARTY WILL TRAVEL TO REGIONAL QUEENSLAND TO SHARE HIS SONGWRITING KNOW-HOW WITH YOUNG ASPIRING MUSICIANS Having grown up in a small regional town, singer-songwriter Jack Carty understands what it’s like to be a young musician finding their voice. He’s taken his songs around the world, and now he’s bringing them to school students in regional and remote Queensland.

Following a callout to school-aged singersongwriters in regional Queensland, six talented aspiring musicians have been chosen to take part in a series of workshops and performances with Carty, to learn the craft and business of the songwriting industry. WHEN WORDS CAN NO LONGER BE TRUSTED, CAN WE SAY IT WITH MUSIC?

WORDS AND MUSIC

Samuel Beckett’s enigmatic radio play Words and Music will be brought to life for QMF by new music ensemble Kupka’s Piano. Sloth, love, ageing and the meaninglessness of words themselves are explored in Beckett’s famously witty and self-conscious wordplay, with music by American minimalist Morton Feldman providing an eerie and often sarcastic counterpoint. ‘Music’ and ‘Words’ feature as actual characters whose relationship is an impossible one.

Words and Music will be performed in the dark – preserving the sentiment of a radio play and aural aspects of theatre – and will be followed by Feldman’s brilliant composition Why Patterns as a postlude. 7PM SATURDAY 15 JULY JUDITH WRIGHT CENTRE OF CONTEMPORARY ARTS FULL – $35 CONCESSION – $30 BOOKINGS

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR KATIE NOONAN’S VISION IS FOR QMF TO DEMONSTRATE LEADERSHIP ON A RANGE OF INITIATIVES, INCLUDING ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY Every Festival we find new and exciting ways to reduce our carbon footprint, such as rechargeable batteries to power keyboards, hiring hybrid cars, encouraging the use of

electronic information to reduce the need for printed materials, and reducing the reliance on disposable water bottles. For the 2017 Festival, QMF has found a water bottle that is not only reusable and recyclable but has been sourced from 100% renewable raw material and is made from sugar cane, an important crop in the Queensland economy.

QMF encourages all audience members to bring with them their own reusable, recyclable water bottle and to access the events, where possible, by public transport or car-pooling. QMF will continue to engage with new ways to positively affect our impact on our environment.

HELP US TRANSFORM LIVES & COMMUNITIES THROUGH MUSIC Music is a universal language, and has the power to transform experiences and transcend barriers. At QMF, we are proud to work with Queenslanders from all walks of life, providing opportunities to engage in projects that deliver important outcomes for individuals and communities. We know that music can help to create more inclusive, caring and connected communities in a number of ways: opportunities for youth engagement, providing a safe space for self-expression and the exploration of difficult issues, and fostering social cohesion and connectedness through shared experiences are just a few examples. QMF projects also contribute to a strong and distinctive arts sector through commissioning new works, and nurturing the next generation of artists and artsworkers. Our work in communities would not be possible without the generous support of donors, foundations and partners. Each Festival, we must raise more than half our budget through donations, sponsorships and project funding. Please consider supporting our work in communities through a donation today. Queensland Music Festival is a Deductible Gift Recipient.

DONORS We are grateful to our Foundation Partners and Major Gift Donors for enabling significant projects as part of the 2017 Festival: Tim Fairfax Family Foundation, The Bryan Family Foundation, Margaret Olley Art Trust, Frazer Family Foundation, the Pavetta Foundation, and Andrew and Renata Kaldor. Special thanks also to Donors Rod Wissler, Jocelyn and Bruce Wolfe, Consulting IT, Nigel Lavender, Katie Noonan, Colin and Noela Kratzing, Simon Buchanan, John and Denise Atkins, and Dee Rennie for supporting QMF 2017.

Q M F E D U C AT I O N Music education provides a host of benefits beyond skills development, and yet many communities do not have regular access to specialist music and arts programs. For students in remote or isolated areas, or disadvantaged communities, the social, emotional and educational impact of music and arts engagement is especially important; yet these are the very students who most often miss out. QMF works closely with schools and communities throughout the state to ensure

students can access high quality music education and arts engagement opportunities, such as the Cape York Instrumental Program and the Youth Touring Program. Other statewide programs, such as Score IT! and On Song, encourage creative expression amongst youth and develop pathways to further education and future careers. Partnerships with schools also ensure that students benefit from engagement in broader community projects such as The Power Within, where hundreds of school-based workshops

are delivered by leading artists over the course of a project. Ensuring that children and youth have access to high quality arts education is one of the most important ways to build a truly vibrant and sustainable cultural sector in Queensland, and QMF is proud to play a role in fostering the next generation of artists and audiences. Help QMF to transform lives through music education. QMF.ORG.AU
