The 2013 Queensland Music Festival is a wonderful opportunity for music-lovers across the state to celebrate and enjoy a vibrant and diverse program.

Queensland Music Festival 2013 is my second Festival as Chair, and I am extremely pleased to see the growth in the program and support for our organisation since 2011. James Morrison’s artistic directorship has seen a substantial increase in participation opportunities in the Festival, with programs across Queensland that feature significant community involvement alongside internationally acclaimed musicians.

Led by Artistic Director James Morrison, the Queensland Music Festival will work with communities large and small to make the joy of music accessible to all. For 17 days, the Queensland Music Festival will create unique experiences that connect people with place and community, and celebrate the richness and variety of Queensland. This year, the Queensland Music Festival brings nationally renowned performers to cities and remote communities alike. We will see a hometown tribute to the Bee Gees at Brisbane Riverstage and large community events with locals performing alongside professional artists. For the World’s Biggest Orchestra, thousands of people will come together in a recordbreaking attempt to make musical history. These events all contribute to the enormous power the Queensland Music Festival will generate across our state in July. As part of the Newman Government’s Arts for all Queenslanders commitment, the Queensland Government supports Queensland Music Festival to deliver more great arts and culture for more Queenslanders.

The geographic reach of this year’s Festival will include 36 communities, taking in locations as diverse as Birdsville, Normanton, Goondiwindi and Yarrabah. Regions hosting major regional events with large-scale community participation include the iconic Boomtown project in Gladstone, the largest regional event in our history, as well as Heart of an Open Country which is taking place as part of Tambo’s sesquicentennial celebrations. QMF is also proud to be part of Mount Isa’s 90th birthday, with Swingin’ Utes joining their celebrations. Similarly the Brisbane program brings together the best of international talent and large-scale participation opportunities. From fully-staged concert events and world premiere performances, to the ambitious GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ challenge of the World’s Biggest Orchestra, audiences will have the opportunity to hear music from all corners of the world, in what will be truly our most diverse and accessible festival program ever. Our commitment to making musical excellence accessible to all Queenslanders could not be accomplished without significant partnerships. Queensland Government provides critical core funding support for the organisation, which allows us to plan effectively and with certainty. Still we must raise nearly half of our budget through other sources, including local government partnerships, corporate partnerships, project funding and philanthropic support. We are extremely grateful to each of our partners for their support, and for their belief in our vision to transform lives through unforgettable musical experiences.

ABOUT QUEENSLAND MUSIC FESTIVAL QUEENSLAND MUSIC FESTIVAL (QMF) IS A STATE-WIDE CELEBRATION OF MUSICAL EXCELLENCE, A MAJOR CULTURAL AND ARTISTIC SUCCESS STORY WITH A NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL REPUTATION, AND AN UNPARALLELED GEOGRAPHIC REACH. Our vision is to transform lives through unforgettable musical experiences. Over 17 days in July 2013, the best of local, national and international talent brings every conceivable style of music to Queenslanders from all walks of life, in Brisbane and in 35 regional and remote centres. Many events are free, and more events than ever feature large-scale collaborative community engagement, creating works that truly reflect the life of our diverse and vibrant state. Increasingly QMF projects take place over months or even years, as is highlighted by some of our regional community projects including Boomtown in Gladstone, Heart of an Open Country in Tambo, Swingin’ Utes in Mount Isa and Roma, and the inaugural Yarrabah Band Festival. Each of these events is the result of extended periods of consultation, creative development and skills development through work with professional artists. Elsewhere two significant regional tours – Tedeschi and Cooper

and Piano Lessons – bring internationally renowned artists to audiences in communities such as Birdsville, Normanton, Goondiwindi and Cunnamulla. Opera at Jimbour reaches new heights through a partnership with Opera Queensland and Camerata of St John’s, performing an all-Verdi program. Elsewhere in Queensland songs of a different kind fill the air, with free community concerts in Moranbah and Emerald by Parisbased Australian songstress Tina Arena in concert with Queensland Youth Orchestra. For the first time our Brisbane program also features large-scale community participation, with World’s Biggest Orchestra providing an opportunity for one and all to be a part of QMF, as part of a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDSTM challenge. The world premiere of a spectacular double concerto by Australian

composer Matthew Dewey is presented as part of Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s Maestro Series, while international artists and musical styles grace the stages of Queensland Performing Arts Centre and Brisbane Powerhouse, with performances by vocal ensemble Take 6, the inimitable Brodsky Quartet and an absolute feast of music as the international language presented in the Esperanto program. Once again, our signature Brisbane event is at Riverstage; How Deep Is Your Love is a tribute to the prolific songwriting career of Queensland’s legendary Gibb Brothers, performed by an amazing line-up of top Australian artists. QMF 2013 brings the best of international and home-grown music to your doorstep. BE PART OF MUSICAL HISTORY WITH JAMES MORRISON Queensland Music Festival kicks off with a bang; two official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDSTM challenges in one day – the World’s Biggest Orchestra and the Largest Trumpet Ensemble – and you’re invited. Whether you’re part of a school or community orchestra, concert or brass band, a professional musician or just play for fun – you could be playing alongside QMF Artistic Director and internationally renowned musician, James Morrison, and up to 10,000 other musicians at Suncorp Stadium. There’ll be no mistaking the start of the Festival as more than 1,200 trumpeters gather at King George Square for the formation of the Largest Trumpet Ensemble. They’ll be led pied piper-style through the streets of Brisbane – what a fantastic commotion they’ll make – marching up Queen Street Mall before travelling to Suncorp Stadium, where thousands more musicians await them to form the World’s Biggest Orchestra.

For the official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDSTM challenge, James Morrison will lead the enormous orchestra in a stirring medley of much-loved pieces arranged specifically for this exciting event. There are easy parts and more challenging parts written for each instrument, so whether you’re a beginner, accomplished soloist, or even someone who hasn’t played for years – start practising to make musical history. Of course, there is no better way to tell a community story than through a community musical; but Boomtown is no ordinary musical. The largest QMF project to date, this is a musical theatre production on a scale you’ve never, ever seen before. With an original commissioned script and score and with a 300 strong cast – all from Gladstone – the spectacle that is Boomtown engulfs the entire Gladstone Marina foreshore

with the waterways and Spinnaker Park as the dramatic and inspiring backdrop. Told through a young boy’s eyes, Boomtown is a fantastical journey through Gladstone’s past, present and future to its true heart. An incredible industrial set, a massive fire-breathing dragon, ethereal floating sculptures and a rather large number of Hi-Viz Zombies. With four astounding performances, these creations – forged in steel and sweat and light and spirit – provide the exquisite framework upon which the people of Gladstone share what it means to them to be a community.

This project has received financial assistance from the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland, and from the Regional Arts Development Fund, a partnership between the Queensland Government and Gladstone Regional Council to support local arts and culture. This event is part of the Rise and Shine Queensland tour visiting regions affected by severe weather events earlier this year. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body. HEART & CRAFT: KATE MILLER-HEIDKE & JOHN RODGERS MUSICAL MINDS CELEBRATE THE JOY OF CREATING AND RECREATING MUSIC. FEATURING KEIR NUTTALL Award-winning singer-songwriter, Kate Miller-Heidke and her long-time collaborator Keir Nuttall, join awardwinning Brisbane musical genius and multi-instrumentalist, John Rodgers, in this striking exploration of the fluidity of music. This show plays with music, combining the vocal power and sheer talent we expect from Miller-Heidke with the virtuosic diversity of Rodgers. Showing both artists in a new light, John re-arranges Kate’s original and popular material as well as a selection of cover versions from their favourite artists. In the afternoon, local singers and musicians – younger and older, string ensembles, big bands, jazz, punk and Indigenous dancers showcase their talents. There will be food and drink stalls and roving entertainment for all the community. In the evening, Troy, in his familiar country clobber, together with the Queensland Youth Orchestra’s Big Band, kicks off proceedings with a collection of his best known country classics. When he heads off stage

to change into his top gear, the 18 piece QYO Big Band loads up into the Utes to swing that big band thing.

The Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Queensland Music Festival have jointly commissioned Australian composer Matthew Dewey to write a double concerto for Morrison (trumpet) and Bliss (clarinet). With his fresh musical voice Matthew Dewey has delighted audiences in both the United States and Russia. This concert premieres Dewey’s classical yet jazz-fired language; tailor-made for two extraordinary musicians. Both Julian Bliss and James Morrison began their distinguished careers at a young age, and both have enjoyed unparalleled success on the international stage. Morrison is an exceptional and acclaimed multi-instrumentalist. Bliss is also

feted for his versatility and recently launched A Tribute to Benny Goodman celebrating the life of the ‘King of Swing’. Dewey’s Double Concerto weaves their distinctive styles and sounds together, bringing the talents of these renowned musical giants together for the first time. This exhilarating concert also features Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story and Ives’ rich Symphony No.2 infused with borrowed fragments from hymns, folk music, other composers’ repertoire and the pop songs of his day. These two pieces, combined with Dewey’s new work are an excellent fit in this adventurous and much anticipated concert.

Conducted by Guy Noble (who is also the MC), they perform well known and stirring Verdi choruses and arias from much-loved works such as Il trovatore, La traviata, Rigoletto and more.

Queensland Music Festival 2013 collaborates with OperaQ to make this imagined beauty a reality once again with festival favourite, Opera at Jimbour, where good food, wine and incredible song abound.

In 2013, QMF joins forces with OperaQ’s four soloists and chorus, along with the Camerata of St John’s to celebrate the bicentenary of Italian Romantic composer, Giuseppe Verdi.

Be sure to rug up as the sun dips below the hills and the music wraps its arms around you.

Local market stalls open from 10am-4pm. Patrons may bring their own picnic. Food and wine can be purchased on site on the day or preorder picnic hampers – see the QMF website for more details. TEDESCHI & COOPER: CLASSICS, GYPSY AND JAZZ WHAT DO YOU GET WHEN YOU SEND TWO VIRTUOSIC MUSICIANS ON A WHIRLWIND TOUR ACROSS QUEENSLAND IN A LIGHT PLANE, ARMED WITH ONLY A KEYBOARD, A FIDDLE AND A SENSE OF HUMOUR? TEDESCHI & COOPER, THAT’S WHAT! Simon Tedeschi (piano) and Ian Cooper (violin) are two of the finest classical musicians Australia has to offer. They’ve played for presidents, queens and princesses and performed to audiences of thousands, from Paris to New York and London to Sydney. They’ve been everywhere, man – but they haven’t been to Georgetown, Normanton, Mareeba, Winton, Birdsville, Quilpie, Charleville, Cunnamulla, Goondiwindi or Warwick.

That’s all about to change. The self-proclaimed city slickers paint a musical landscape that encompasses classics, country, jazz, gypsy, swing and blues. Described by Artistic Director James Morrison as ‘mixing nitro with glycerine’, this is an aural explosion of the craziest and most brilliant kind. Tedeschi & Cooper – it’s not just a concert, it’s an experience.

PIANO LESSONS A MUSICAL MEMOIR OF PURE ENCHANTMENT Concert pianist Anna Goldsworthy’s deeply-felt memoir, Piano Lessons, comes to life once again after its world premiere at the 2011 Queensland Music Festival. Due to popular demand, this sublime piece of music-theatre is back in 2013 with a state-wide tour. Goldsworthy’s award-winning book, which recounts her musical awakening as a young girl, struck a deep chord with critics, readers and music lovers on its release in 2009. Goldsworthy herself stars in the stage adaptation alongside doyenne of the Australian stage and screen, Carol Burns. Like the book, the

production is an exquisite exploration of the intriguing relationship between the young pianist and her Russian teacher. This charismatic enigma inspires and challenges her young pupil in equal measure as they work through a spellbinding selection of piano pieces, including pieces from Mozart, Liszt and Chopin. Part concert and part theatrical production, Piano Lessons is a profound insight into the lives and inspirations of the great masters to expose the process of learning, interpreting and creating music. Shostakovich was a man completely and utterly emotionally connected to his music. The fifteen string quartets – collectively thought of as one of the great works of 20th century art – communicate his inner life as well as mirroring the highs and lows of life in Soviet Russia. The cycle reflects his stylistic evolution across the years – from youthful brash humour and experiment through introverted melancholy and nationalistic fervour to defiance and bleakness – a compelling life and death battle of ideas, truth, ideology and existence.

A MESMERISING PERFORMANCE THAT STRETCHES MUSICAL BOUNDARIES TO THEIR LIMITS. This is the first Queensland performance in almost 15 years of Stockhausen’s seminal work, Mantra. Performed by the piano duo of Liam Viney and Anna Grinberg, the program also includes a world premiere by Australian avant-garde composer, Matthew Hindson. Commissioned by the University of Queensland, the innovative new work is for two pianos and electronics and is inspired by glitch and 8-bit video game music. Hindson is known for his use of popular idioms and radical ideas – a perfect companion for Stockhausen’s profoundly influential work.

Mantra is uniquely scored for two grand pianos electronically processed through ‘ring modulators,’ kaleidoscopically expanding the sound palette of the piano. The pianists are equipped with antique cymbals, wood blocks, and a transistor radio that at one point transforms cosmic static into Morse code and channels it into the fabric of the composition. The award-winning Viney and Grinberg have performed worldwide and are renowned for their striking repertoire spanning classic two-piano literature, modern masterpieces and new works.

Yarrabah has a rich history of instrumental music with the first brass band being formed in 1901 and touring across the state, taking the sounds of Yarrabah far and wide. That tradition has been dormant for more than 40 years… until now! Yarrabah Band Festival sees not only the first performance of the newly-formed community band but also a coming together of Indigenous players from across

the region. Cape York Aboriginal Australian Academy students from Aurukun, Coen and Hope Vale join local performers for an evening of music that heralds the return of Indigenous bands to northern Queensland. As part of the celebrations, visiting musicians Darren Percival (The Voice), Thelma Plum (Deadly Award Winner) and the Morrison Brothers will take to the stage before an allin, massed-band finale. SCORE IT! A FILM WITHOUT MUSIC IS LIKE A PUPPET WITHOUT STRINGS – IT IS UNLIKELY TO MOVE. Introducing Score IT! a filmscoring contest for emerging Queensland composers. The musical score of a film is as integral to its emotional impact as the script, cinematography and even the actors themselves. So, for the fourth time, Queensland Music Festival has thrown down a challenge to young composers state-wide (from Years 8 -12) to create their original composition to accompany a short film. There are three categories – Score IT! Junior, Senior and Plus.

To enter Score IT! Junior and Senior, students create a musical recording using any instrumentation to accompany the film. Score IT! Plus is a new category for age groups from Years 8 -12. This is a more challenging opportunity to compose for specified instruments and submit a written score. Award-winning screen composer and orchestrator Cameron Patrick will be the judge of this new category.

Originally from Brisbane, he is now based in LA where he has worked on projects with DreamWorks, Warner Bros, Disney, Pixar and Paramount Pictures. Score IT! encourages learning opportunities by linking the most outstanding entrants with industry professionals. In 2013 the contest will culminate with an awards ceremony, where the winning Score IT! Plus composition will be performed by students from the Griffith University Queensland Conservatorium.

This project is supported by Australia Council, the Australian Government’s arts funding and advisory body, through its Community Partnerships Section.

In a special Queensland Music Festival performance, Ailan Kores travels to Brisbane to perform their joyous and iconic devotional pieces for the opening of the International Congress of Voice Teachers. Singers from six islands across the Torres Strait, the Ailan Kores, came together in 2011 to perform

an evening of sacred choral music. On Thursday Island Ailan Kores performed with the Queensland Youth Orchestra in a celebration of the unity and diversity of Torres Strait culture. The combined voices performed a program of local hymns startlingly transformed to express their tradition of exuberant music worship.

The works will be re-interpreted again by composer Damian Barbeler and Alison Rogers returns to conduct Ailan Kores. With songs chosen from the Eastern, Central and Western language groups the choral works reflect the Torres Strait’s cultural and linguistic distinctiveness.

This staged concert of Madame Carandini’s Travelling Musical Curiosity Show, currently a work-indevelopment at Metro Arts, features the original composition by John Rodgers, performed by acclaimed vocalists Sandro Colarelli and Geraldine Turner, and renowned musicians Mark Atkins, Sallie Campbell and John Rodgers. The concert weaves together the exotic sounds of such curious instruments as the bowed psaltery, nyckelharpa, glass harmonica and didgeridoo.

Madame Carandini’s Travelling Musical Curiosity Show is inspired by the legend of explorer, Christie Palmerston. Known as a enigmatic anti-hero, his notorious legacy is a colourful embellishment between fact, legend and cultural extremes. The wilderness of North Queensland is enrolled as an unlikely backdrop to an innately Australian gothic tale, by Stephen Carleton.

Public events, such as Heart of an Open Country (Tambo), Boomtown (Gladstone) and the Yarrabah Band Festival are the culmination of many months of work with community members, who collaborate with QMF artists to build skills and create productions that reflect their unique identities, hopes and aspirations. Music can be an effective vehicle for effecting positive change in individual lives and whole communities. These projects provide opportunities for skills development, strengthening social networks and telling stories that help to shape our identity and understand each other. Music helps us to celebrate who we are, as well as providing a safe ground for exploring stories that are difficult to tell. Queensland is home to many diverse communities, and QMF seeks to engage with people from a wide range of geographic places and cultural backgrounds. We are extremely proud to have contributed to building community resilience in places affected by

floods and cyclones, as well as helping to address gaps in regional and remote education, through providing music education and participation opportunities in partnership with schools and communities across the state. Cape York Instrumental Project is a great example of a program that aims to address educational disadvantage, providing Cape York Aboriginal Australian Academy students in the remote communities of Aurukun, Hope Vale and Coen with a stage band program that is equivalent to those offered in metropolitan schools. In addition to providing professional development for teachers in remote communities, students received intensive training with one of Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best instrumental teachers. More than 700 community members turned out to support the Aurukun group for their first ever end of year concert in December 2012, and in 2013 students from all three campuses have the opportunity to attend band camp for the first time, before performing as part of the Yarrabah Band Festival.

In other community projects including Boomtown (Gladstone) and Heart of an Open Country (Tambo), participants of all ages have been training with leading musicians and theatre directors as they prepare to present their stories as part of QMF 2013. Yarrabah will present the inaugural Yarrabah Band Festival, where up and coming Indigenous musicians will play alongside talent including Thelma Plum, Darren Percival (The Voice) and James Morrison. Queensland communities face a whole spectrum of issues including geographic isolation, socioeconomic stress, racial tensions and lack of access to education opportunities. QMF projects help to

address disadvantages in its many forms, and we are grateful to our diverse partners who are committed to helping build community programs over the long term. These include Arts Queensland, Tim Fairfax Family Foundation, John Villiers Trust, Perpetual Foundation, Australia Council for the Arts, Regional Arts Fund, Festivals Australia, Cape York Aboriginal Australian Academy, Link-Up Queensland, Gindaja Healing and Treatment Indigenous Corporation, Creative Recovery and the Regional Arts Development Fund. A number of generous individuals have contributed to our community programs through donations to the Transformations Fund, with special

thanks to Damian Bender whose donation provided instruments for the Yarrabah Band Program, the Golding Family, the Waterson Family and the Lloyd Family for their support of the Gladstone community project and QMF Board Chair, Kate Farrar.
