FROM DEBORAH CONWAY In 2009 Queensland turns 150; its musical traditions demonstrate a century and a half of changing styles and fashions in the western world. But what we now call Queensland is millennia older than that, with music that reaches back to the Dreamtime. What a great basis for a music festival. And that’s just for starters — 150 years have given these cultures plenty of opportunities to grab each other and dance cheek to cheek to new rhythms, making new harmonies. Birthdays are a good time to reflect on the past and consider the future; this July we will lovingly put Queensland under the historical microscope while also aiding and abetting some adventurous notions of an imagined future in musical form. We’ll explore sound in its many varieties and push boundaries in creating music from sounds not necessarily regarded as musical.

online

This year’s Queensland Music Festival brings people from opposite sides of the globe together for the first time. We will experience the exchange, the collision of old and new and the similarities of sonic worlds that have developed so far apart and yet share a commonality both surprising and moving.

After all, what is music but the purest expression of humanity?

Deborah Conway QMF Artistic Director

FROM THE HON ANNA BLIGH, MP

FROM ELIZABETH JAMESON

Since 1991, Queensland Music Festival has brought a sense of celebration and discovery throughout the State.

This year’s Festival marks an exciting development for the Queensland Music Festival as an organisation, with a major Community Partnerships project being undertaken with the support of the Australia Council, Department of Premier and Cabinet, community organisations and many other local and state government partners. This is a powerful endorsement of our commitment to community cultural development and engagement, particularly throughout regional Queensland.

Every second year, communities from the farthest reaches of Queensland are united through two weeks of musical exploration, bringing some of the best talent from around the world together. Queensland Music Festival is unique . New works are commissioned for each Festival, creating a contemporary cultural reflection of the diversity of life in the State. Participation is at the heart and soul of the Festival, as leading professional artists from around the globe work hand in hand with Queenslanders from all walks of life, to build capacity, foster long-term cultural development, and create works that resonate with the unique identities and concerns of each community. Excellence is also a hallmark of Queensland Music Festival, providing Queenslanders with opportunities to see some of the best talent from Australia and the world.

The Community Partnerships suite of projects encompasses Hidden Republic (Thursday Island), The Road We’re On (Charleville), Laid in Earth (Cooktown), Song Trails in ten regions across Central and South-East Queensland, ongoing community engagement with Australian South Sea Islanders along the Central and Northern Queensland Coast, and the State-wide film composition project Score IT!

As part of Queensland’s landmark 150th Birthday, the Festival showcases our distinctive cultural landscape in concert with internationally renowned artists.

Our commitment to Queenslanders reaches throughout the State with over 30 events that will entertain, engage and enlighten. Through providing opportunities to experience top-flight entertainment in their own backyards, commissioning new works that exemplify excellence and reflect our identity, the Queensland Music Festival celebrates artistic excellence and ignites the transformational potential of music.

THE HON ANNA BLIGH, MP PREMIER OF QUEENSLAND AND MINISTER FOR ARTS

ELIZABETH JAMESON CHAIR, QMF BOARD

ABOUT QUEENSLAND MUSIC FESTIVAL The Queensland Music Festival is a state-wide celebration of musical excellence, a major cultural and artistic success story with a national and international reputation, and an unparalleled geographic reach. QMF transcends boundaries. Over 17 days, the best of local, national and international talent will perform every conceivable style of music to Queenslanders in Brisbane and in over 20 regional and remote centres. The majority of events are free, and many will feature large-scale collaborative community engagement. No music is left unloved in a program that will move and inspire with new and surprising cross-genre exchanges from around the State, the country and the globe.

Meanwhile back in Brisbane, three writers and three composers with wildly different styles have been shaken and stirred to collaborate on Presidentsland, three new works that explore what Queensland might look, feel, taste and most importantly sound like in the future. On the closing weekend of the Festival,a stellar line-up ofAustralian talent will come together for Cannot Buy My Soul, a tribute to Queensland’s legendary Kev Carmody.

Hidden Republic, the opening event for QMF 2009, is a prime example. It is an idea that has taken on a life of its own, growing from an initial plan to create the largest concert event ever seen on Thursday Island. Thirty-three musicians from the Queensland Youth Symphony will share the stage with Black Arm Band members and Torres Strait Islander performers in an event that will link Queensland from north to south through a live webcast on the internet and shown live to a big screen in the centre of Brisbane.

Throughout Queensland, the Festival ignites artistic potential. In collaboration with shire councils and the community at large, QMF inspires participation in music-making and performance that reflects local culture and tells local stories.

Other equally ambitious, visionary and quirky projects abound throughout the State. A Finnish accordionist will create Earth Machine Music through working with local farmers and machinery enthusiasts in outback Queensland, with one performance in tandem with the local camel racing event. In Charleville, a new major musictheatre piece will celebrate the town and its people with three performances on the banks of the mighty Warrego River.

QMF makes the joy of music accessible to all, creates unique experiences that connect people with place and community, and celebrates the richness and diversity of Queensland’s musical and geographical landscapes. Whether your primary interest is serious contemporary music, world music, regional cultural development, or just taking in fantastic entertainment, there are over 30 events throughout the State to connect with.

CANNOT BUY MY SOUL The Songs of Kev Carmody Kev Carmody, Paul Kelly, Bernard Fanning, John Butler, Clare Bowditch, Tex Perkins, The Herd, The Drones and many more join forces in a special twilight concert at Brisbane Riverstage to celebrate a unique Australian talent. Powerful, versatile and utterly original, for the past 24 years legendary singer songwriter Kev Carmody has evoked the realities of contemporary Aboriginal society with a clarity and grace that has won him fans across Australia and around the world. This signature Queensland Music Festival event sees Carmody’s repertoire — from blunt protest songs to poetic ballads — reinterpreted by a thrilling line-up of Australia’s most acclaimed singer songwriters and musicians who contributed to the 2007 album Cannot Buy My Soul, produced by long-time friend and collaborator Paul Kelly. Carmody’s music embraces a range of styles, mixing folk and country with reggae, funk, traditional didgeridoo and mandolin, hard rock, gospel and his straight-talking, laconic, sharp-edged vocals. Persuasive, intelligent and committed, Carmody puts this combination of musical traditions to stunning effect in sung stories that are wistful, witty, brutal and poignant. Don’t miss this landmark concert in Australian music.

“A virtuoso in the true Romantic style” The Guardian

Queensland Music Festival and Brisbane City Council present

LESLIE HOWARD Australian born Leslie Howard is known internationally as much for his musicality as for his record-breaking recordings of the complete music for solo piano by Franz Liszt; some 94 CDs.

Commanding the largest repertoire of any pianist who has ever lived and the largest discography of any pianist in recording history, Leslie Howard has justly earned his reputation as a pianist without peer on the international concert scene. Leslie has played with the world’s great orchestras, working with many distinguished conductors. His joy in musical discovery and combination of intellect and spontaneity make his recital programs a truly personal experience. This recital presents three of his great passions: the music of Beethoven — a set of variations of rare beauty; Liszt — in a magnificent set of prayers and laments; and the romantic Russians, with a group of delightful miniatures by Borodin and the rich colours of the brilliant first sonata of Glazunov. PRESIDENTS LAND

If Australia were to become a republic would Queensland be called Presidentsland? Presidentsland explores the often-contemplated and always contentious subject of what our future will look, feel, smell, taste and of course sound like.

16

This contemporary concert in three parts has been commissioned by the Queensland Music Festival with collaborations between Australia’s most innovative composers and authors: jazz maestro Paul Grabowsky with ex-Prime Minister Keating’s speech writer Don Watson; avant-garde composer Erik Griswold with poet and novelist Rodney Hall; and The Saints’ guitarist Ed Kuepper with novelist Venero Armanno. The Southern Cross Soloists, conducted by Paul Dean, will perform under the direction of Patrick Nolan.

THE PINK TWINS Text by Sue Rider Music by John Rodgers They dressed in pink, accessorised in pink, lived in a pink house, and drove a pink car. The twins also made a difference to the lives of thousands of people with disabilities through their long-term commitment to the Sunshine Welfare and Remedial Association (SWARA), an organisation perched on a remnant of land between Albert Park and the Normanby Fiveways. Now Queensland artists Sue Rider (writer/director) and John Rodgers (composer/musician) celebrate the rose-coloured lives and good works of identical twins Dorothy and Moyia O’Brien in an original work of music theatre. The Pink Twins boasts an outstanding cast including identical twin performers Anni Davey and Maude Davey, twin singer-musicians Heather Michael and Marjorie Michael, and actor Dan Crestani. A distinctive part of this production will be the involvement of SWARA service users in a community choir conducted by Robert Eastcott. Fri 17 July

AN EXPERIENCE IN SIX STRINGS The guitar is central to the Brazilian musical experience. From great composers like Villa-Lobos, to folk forms like samba and bossa-nova, the guitar has played a pivotal role in unifying “high” and “low” music. In a country as large as Brazil, with such a rich musical heritage this means a lot. The guitar became popular there even before emerging as a concert instrument in Europe in the 20th century. João Rabello has been described as a member of Brazil’s elite register of musicians; little surprise when he can claim legendary guitar players on both sides of his family going back four generations. An Experience In Six Strings is João Rabello’s tour through the universe of the Brazilian guitar. From the traditional to the vanguard, from the north to the south, this repertoire is for those who wish to hear a small piece of a long history carried in six strings.

vulgar Cheesy frock! MONSIEUR CAMEMBERT It’s not hard to understand why triple ARIA Award-winning group, Monsieur Camembert have been at the forefront of Australia’s GYPROCK scene for the past eight years. Described as theatrical, irreverent, virtuosic and irrepressibly talented, Monsieur Camembert is truly a force of nature so bring your dancing shoes, this music is irresistible.

“Probably the most entertaining band in the universe. Ever.” Drum Media

VULGARGRAD VulgarGrad interprets old songs of the Russian thieves with punk classics of the Perestroika era and a strong dose of contemporary St. Petersburg swearing ska. Legend of stage and screen, Jacek Koman (The Secret Life of Us, Moulin Rouge) is the genial but vengeful front man backed by a gang of Australia’s most illustrious ex-cons drawn from bands such as The Ennio Morricone Experience and Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen. It’s vodka-fuelled oompah swing ska punk — gulag-style.

frock Frock’s new album The Father, The Son and the Holy Ghost recasts the music of Don Walker, Neil Finn and Nick Cave. Don Walker’s gift for storytelling, Neil Finn’s unique and subtle harmonic language and Nick Cave’s murky gothic are the perfect vehicles for the orchestral possibilities of a group with three chordal instruments and a virtuosic ability to improvise.

AN EVENING OF AMP AMP stands for Australian Music Prize, an independent not-for-profit award that encourages a level playing field of musical opportunity. The prize is $30,000 given to an Australian artist or group in recognition of the outstanding creativity they exhibited based on an original album released in 2008. There is a panel of 20 or more judges selected for their knowledge and impartiality. The shortlist this year was impressive in its variety and talent and we have selected three of our favourites to play Loud In The Valley.

Jack Ladder / Love Is Gone Sydney Love is Gone moves effortlessly between the sounds of early R&B, alt-country, folk and blues and subsumes them all into a rich blend topped off with a distinct sense of swagger and a lot of sex. Imagine Leonard Cohen driving through Detroit singing along to Little Richard on the radio. Now imagine Detroit is a vast beach located somewhere north of Sydney.

Tom Cooney / Presque Vu Brisbane Presque Vu, full of unexpected textures and understated finesse, is much more likely to nudge your arm than tug at your sleeve. Though once it gets your attention, the longer you sit with it the more it will give you.

Ross McLennan and the new world sympathetique Melbourne A dozen finely crafted songs open up labyrinthine worlds of meaning, association and possibilities with every listen. The sophisticated production values and rich orchestration add dark soul textures and grandiose alt-rock flourishes to Ross’s sometimes witty, sometimes melancholic songs. Sneakily spectacular, introspectively epic and inevitably classic, Sympathy For The New World is a must-hear.

Throughout history, the relationships between choreographer and composer have spawned some of our best loved music — Tchaikovsky and Petipa, Adam and Coralli, Delibes and SaintLeon, Debussy and Diaghalev, Copland and Graham, Cage and Cunningham — none of the great classical and modern dance repertoire of the 19th and 20th century could have emerged without the collaborative creative energies of these makers. But what becomes of this traditional working relationship in a 21st century conditioned by economic rationalisation and the global financial crisis? Hear some of our most respected makers of both dance and music discuss their own uniquely creative relationships and their vision for dance beyond 2009. Guest choreographers include Gavin Webber, Francois Klaus, Natalie Weir and Lisa O’Niell, in discussion with four of our leading composers including Iain Grandage and Guy Webster.

Queensland Music Festival, Brisbane City Council and Brisbane Powerhouse present Dancenorth’s

“[Remember Me] further cements Dancenorth’s growing reputation for edgy and physical choreography, compelling narratives and willingness to incorporate a wide range of media into their performances” Realtime

REMEMBER ME This powerful Dancenorth production merges live music with film, theatre and dance to create a work of great tenderness and nostalgia. Documenting a lifestyle of weekly social dancing that has largely disappeared from modern Australian life, Remember Me evokes eternal themes of age, life and death. Two generations meet through the joy of dance, discovering that in the cycle of life there will always be the same memories and premonitions. Iain Grandage’s exquisite score is complemented by Gavin Webber’s intensely physical choreography, to create a compelling performance of poignant beauty that will live long in the memory. Dancenorth would like to acknowledge the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland and the Australian Government through Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body. Dancenorth would also like to acknowledge the Townsville City Council for their ongoing assistance.

FIDELIO When love and justice triumph In the darkest dungeon of a state prison, Florestan, a young nobleman who exposed the crimes of Don Pizarro, the corrupt governor of the fortress, is slowly nearing death. Florestan’s wife, Leonore, is determined to find him and has disguised herself as a young man, Fidelio, working for Rocco, the head jailer. When Rocco’s daughter, Marzelline, falls in love with Fidelio — to the annoyance of Jaquino, a janitor who is also in love with her — Leonore finds faith, courage and compassion, and risks her life to bring freedom to her husband, in turn liberating the entire prison. This striking new production of Beethoven’s sole opera makes its Australian première on the Conservatorium Theatre stage. Director and designer Marthinus Basson gives this powerful opera a contemporary new edge. Sung in German with projected English translations. THE ROAD WE’RE ON An unforgettable outdoor musical event under a magnificent western Queensland night sky. The Road We’re On brings together a world class team of creators to celebrate Charleville’s rich vein of stories and talent in an evening of explosive, levee-bursting, stargazing, ground-breaking entertainment. A world weary Oracle and her Steamy Sirens lure four young adventurers into the Labyrinth. Following the paths of the Land, the Stars, Fire and Water our intrepid foursome meet a series of outlandish characters from the past, the present and the future; the women of the land, the denizens of the Corones Hotel, even Galileo himself magically appear to rock, swing and sway their way into your hearts. Grab a blanket and a chair and join us on the banks of the Warrego for an unforgettable night. This project is supported by the Australia Council, the Australian Government’s arts funding and advisory body, through its Community Partnerships Section. WITH COMMUNITIES FOR COMMUNITIES BY COMMUNITIES With the support of the Australia Council’s Community Partnerships Program, Queensland Government and numerous local government partners, Queensland Music Festival has commenced six long-term projects to take place throughout the State between 2009 and 2011. From the iconic Hidden Republic event that opens the Festival, to the final Song Trails concert at the end of the road, these projects build upon QMF’s works with communities. This diverse group of projects in Cooktown, Charleville, Thursday Island, the Whitsunday Coast and Song Trails and Score IT! are all about helping communities tell their own stories. The performance events for these projects only tell a small part of the story. Both before and after the Festival, teams of creative professionals including musicians, composers, producers, technicians and teachers spend time in communities working to unearth compelling stories, identify local talent and develop skills. In Charleville, The Road We’re On, for example, has had an incredible community response, the rich tapestry of local lore and local talent culminating in something far greater than what could have been imagined. Yumi Cam Wan Ples is the first chapter of a three-year project tracing the rich heritage of the Australian South Sea Islander community. Inspired by the incredible history of this community in Queensland, QMF is working with ASSI communities on the central and north coast towards developing a major music theatre work for the 2011 Festival. The Island Song Workshops with Torres Strait Islander artists have been taking place on Thursday Island since April.

Secondary students, emerging and established community artists have had the opportunity to work with some of the nation’s best-known talent — including members of the Black Arm Band gaining valuable experience in songwriting, performance and recording. Over the next three years we will be able to see this progress, as plans unfold for a major Torres Strait Islander performance at the next Festival in 2011. Secondary students in remote regions of Western and Far North Queensland have benefitted from workshops on film composition, to encourage participation in Score IT! Providing skills development opportunities that are generally only accessible in major metropolitan areas is another way of working with communities to ensure their voices are heard. Similarly, Song Trails brings top singer songwriters to regional communities, where aspiring artists can develop their craft and gain inspiration. In Cooktown, Laid in Earth is a particularly proud achievement, as QMF has been invited back by the community following the 2007 creation of the Musical Ship, to help build skills that will ensure the longevity of the local choir in Hope Vale. During the months leading up to the Festival, Musician in Residence Daniel Rojas has been working with community choirs in Cooktown, as they prepare for the opportunity to participate in the world premiere of Damian Barbeler’s work Laid in Earth alongside Sarah Blasko.

LAID IN EARTH In 2007 the Queensland Music Festival built the Musical Ship, a percussive playground for all ages, on the beautiful foreshore of Cooktown’s Endeavour River. In 2009, QMF will revisit the Musical Ship with Laid In Earth, a newly commissioned work from celebrated Australian composer Damian Barbeler, featuring multi award-winning vocalist Sarah Blasko. Using a cast of some of Australia’s finest musicians and performers, alongside community singers from Hope Vale, Rossville and Cooktown, Damian will create voicescapes of iconic European arias to reflect the earliest cultural exchanges between Europeans and Indigenous Australians. This spectacular afternoon will begin with the massed percussion piece Mothership, performed by school children from the region. Following this, new songs from Indigenous Deadly Awardwinning band Black Image and Sydney’s Kurrawong Ensemble will lead into a sunset performance of Laid In Earth, to be introduced with a vocal blessing by the renowned Hope Vale Choir.

This project is supported by the Australia Council, the Australian Government’s arts funding and advisory body, through its Community Partnerships Section.

Cooktown is a place where history, cultures and geography are compressed together in a mix of intriguing coincidences. Supported by a stunning soundscape and visual projections, Laid In Earth will embark on a journey through the diversity, beauty and struggle of living in remote Far North Queensland.

SCORE IT! A film-scoring competition for Queensland’s young composers.

Score IT! throws down the gauntlet to young composers between the ages of 12 – 18 to create a unique and original composition to accompany a scoreless short film. New career opportunities in musical composition are expanding due to new technologies and the growth of creative industries. QMF brings together key industry players to promote these growing industries by discovering and developing the musical talents of today’s young composers. To support and stimulate the creative process that underpins composing music for film, television and computer games, a series of Composing for Film workshops were conducted by renowned Australian composer Peter Kaldor on Thursday Island and in Bamaga, Weipa, Cairns, Townsville, Mount Isa, Logan and Brisbane.

The announcement of the Score IT! 2009 competition winners will be made by internationally renowned film composer Michael Nyman, patron of Score IT!
