QUEENSL AND MUSIC FESTIVAL , QUEENSL AND GOVERNMENT AND MOUNT ISA CIT Y COUNCIL PRESENT
Welcome Messages In my three and half years as Artistic Director of Queensland Music Festival, I have come to realise that at Queensland Music Festival we do something truly extraordinary and unique. We go into communities and engage in a way that no one else does. We want to know your story and we want to know your song. We want to make large scale professional works with, by and for community in a way that truly celebrates the awesomeness of who we are. Tonight feels like an amazing summation of our 20 years of extraordinary community engagement. In Lyndon Terracini’s audacious Bob Cat Dancing in 2003, Queensland Music Festival began a long term love affair with the people of Mount Isa/ Kalkadoon Country and tonight in The Mount Isa Blast, we hope you feel our continued love for you and your wonderful city. A huge heartfelt thanks to our incredible Queensland Music Festival The Mount Isa Blast team led by Kate and Ruby, and to the incredible participants who have dedicated their time, effort and talent to creating this wonderful work. Yours in song,
KATIE NOONAN ARTISTIC DIRECTOR QUEENSLAND MUSIC FESTIVAL
The story of a place is never richer than when told by those who live and breathe it —the locals who know its quiet streets, its tall tales and its unsung heroes. This program will tell the compelling story of Mount Isa − the traditional land of the Kalkadoon people and a city of tremendous character, with diverse strengths from its rich mineral reserves to its world−famous rodeo. For the past nine months, some of Australia’s most talented creative artists have worked with the Mount Isa City Council and members of the Mount Isa community to produce The Mount Isa Blast − a signature Queensland Music Festival event for Buchanan Park. Across three spectacular performances, The Mount Isa Blast aims to capture the essence of Mount Isa, by engaging more than 400 enthusiastic locals to create a musical heartbeat for the city. Earlier this year we saw the devastating impact caused by an unprecedented flood event throughout north west Queensland. Events like this can foster a spirit of pride and resilience in times that test a community’s resolve. And as the region recovers, we hope the Queensland Government’s Year of Outback Tourism inspires droves of tourists to discover the wonders of Mount Isa. Queensland Music Festival has been using music to bring communities together for two decades, engaging audiences of more than one million people through projects and events in more than 100 Queensland communities. The Mount Isa Blast is certain to be a highlight of Queensland Music Festival 2019— an extraordinary outback event that is by the people, for the people.
ANNASTACIA PALASZCZUK MP PREMIER OF QUEENSLAND MINISTER FOR TRADE
LEEANNE ENOCH MP MINISTER FOR ENVIRONMENT AND THE GREAT BARRIER REEF MINISTER FOR SCIENCE AND MINISTER FOR THE ARTS
Welcome to Mount Isa, the City of Opportunity, this year hosting another outstanding production from the Queensland Music Festival. Ever since Queensland Music Festival burst onto the stage in Mount Isa with 2003’s unforgettable Bob Cat Dancing, our community has always looked forward to its biennial productions. Since then, every two years, we have enjoyed the likes of 2009’s The Big Weekend, 2013’s Swingin’ Utes, 2015’s Mount Isa Celebrates, and 2017’s Songs That Made Me. What makes these shows stand out is the fact they always include participation from local residents, such as an ensemble band comprised of Mount Isa-based musicians, mass choirs and local singers. They also provide many members of our community, both young and old, a fantastic opportunity to showcase their rich, yet often hidden, musical and performing talents. This year’s show, The Mount Isa Blast, pays homage to the almost 20 years of shows Queensland Music Festival has been staging here, and features world-renowned didgeridoo player William Barton, and singer Megan Sarmardin, who both originally hail from Mount Isa. Council is proud to be partnering with Queensland Music Festival to bring this spectacular free event to the Mount Isa community. I hope you enjoy this wonderful performance.
HER WORSHIP JOYCE MCCULLOCH MOUNT ISA CITY COUNCIL MAYOR
These shows are always special, but The Mount Isa Blast is particularly spectacular for several reasons. Queensland Music Festival and the Mount Isa City Council have been working together for almost two decades, ever since the two Bob Cat shows - Bob Cat Dancing and Bob Cat Magic. I know those are pleasant memories for so many Mount Isa locals. One of the people directly involved in the making of those shows, director Sean Mee, is my mentor and good friend. It’s been an honour to walk in his footsteps. When I was asked on board well over a year ago, it was clear it would be wise for The Mount Isa Blast to gesture to shows of the past, while also marking the present. So The Mount Isa Blast is a unique mix of the old and the new - an excavation of Mount Isa’s history and its beauty. You’re in for a lot of surprises tonight. It’s been such a thrill to work in partnership with the Mount Isa City Council to find the hundreds of talented, diverse Mount Isa locals who were so enthusiastic to participate. It’s been a particular honour to work with the Kalkadoon Community, and I’m so happy to be able to bring a piece of their story to the stage tonight. We are blessed to walk on Kalkadoon land. On behalf of all of us at Queensland Music Festival, we hope your evening is an absolute blast. Sincerely,
DAVID BURTON WRITER AND DIRECTOR THE MOUNT ISA BLAST
