Welcome Message This evening we welcome you to delight in the magic of beautiful chamber music. From the magnificent notes of Mendelssohn’s extraordinary string quartets on July 7, the perfection of Bach’s cello suites July 14, through to the glorious notes of 16th century masters Palestrina and Monteverdi on July 21, our Twilight in the Red Box series brings a unique chance for you to hear world-class music in a very intimate space. Tinalley String Quartet will delight you with some of the world’s finest works for string quartets, star University of Queensland alumnus Simon Svoboda will serenade your ears with the wonder of Bach and in our final concert, renowned master of choral singing Graeme Morton, will lead the 21 voices of the University of Queensland Chamber Choir in a concert that will fill your heart with beautiful sounds of tranquility and peace from the Renaissance. A huge heartfelt thanks to our incredible Queensland Music Festival Twilight in the Red Box team led by Katrina and Oliver, our beautiful artists Adam, Lerida, Justin and Patrick of Tinalley String Quartet, Simon and Graeme and the singers of the University of Queensland Chamber Choir. Featured Biographies TINALLEY STRING QUARTET Internationally acclaimed for its ‘addictive sound’, ‘intuitive’ music making and ‘technical virtuosity’, the Tinalley String Quartet (TSQ) has established itself as one of Australia’s finest string quartets and most awarded classical music exports. Now in its 15th year, the Tinalley String Quartet was awarded the Grand Prize of the 2005 Australian Chamber Music Competition and captured the world’s attention in 2007 when it was awarded First Prize at the prestigious 9th Banff International String Quartet Competition. The Quartet has performed throughout Australia, Europe, Canada and United States, appearing in such prestigious venues as the Vienna Musikverein, Berlin Konzerthaus, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Bremen Die Glocke, Frankfurt Alte Oper and the Sydney Opera House. International highlights have included performances in New York, Paris, London, Toronto, Vancouver, San Francisco and San Diego. The Quartet remains the only Australian ensemble to have been presented in the preeminent Berlin Konzerthaus International String Quartet Series and the Jeunesse Musik Erleben Series at the Musikverein. In Australia, the Quartet has appeared at the nation’s premier festivals including the Australian Festival of Chamber Music, the Melbourne International Arts Festival, the Canberra International Music Festival, the Perth International Arts Festival, the Tasmanian Chamber Music Festival, the Huntington Festival, the Port Fairy Festival and the Coriole Festival.
In addition to performing the great masterpieces of the quartet repertory, the Quartet has a passion for collaborating with artists outside of the classical sphere. Such projects have included appearances at the Perth International Arts Festival with UK jazz pianist Gwilym Simcock and ‘Beethoven’s Letters’, a musical narrative that interweaves the quartets of Beethoven with his own writings, with acclaimed Australian actors John Bell and John Stanton. In 2018, the Quartet has commissioned the reimagining of the orchestral song cycle ‘Compassion’ by Nigel Westlake and singer/songwriter Lior for chamber septet and voice which will be premiered at the 2018 Adelaide Festival. The Quartet’s 2018 season features appearances at the Adelaide Festival, Coriole Festival, Tasmanian Chamber Music Festival, City Recital Hall Angel Place and Port Fairy Festival. The Quartet will serve on the faculty of the Australian Youth Orchestra Chamber Players and begins a new collaboration with the University of Queensland as quartet-inresidence. The Quartet will also release its first recording with the DECCA label of the Ravel and Debussy String Quartets, in honour of the centenary of Debussy’s death. The Tinalley String Quartet is named after the laneway that runs through The University of Melbourne Parkville Campus where the Quartet formed. The Quartet is honoured by the Vice Regal Patronage of His Excellency General, The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret’d) Governor of New South Wales.
SIMON SVOBODA
GRAEME MORTON
Simon Svoboda is one of the most exciting young Australian cellists emerging today. Graduating from the University of Queensland in 2017 with a Bachelor of Music Honours (1st class) studying cello with Patrick Murphy, Simon is now in the Professional Performance Program at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) studying with Howard Penny. In 2018 Simon took lessons with world-renowned soloists Jean-Guihen Queyras, Johannes Moser and Marko Ylönen, and was selected for the 2018 Cervo Sommerakademie, studying with Troels Svane. He was selected to perform in the 2019 Cello Festival at the Sibelius Academy, Helsinki, where he will commence post-graduate studies in August 2019.
Graeme is one of Australia’s most eclectic choral musicians, with a wealth of experience as a conductor, teacher, composer and broadcaster of choral music. Graeme has received numerous awards including an award of the Order of Australia (AM) for service to the arts, the 2011 Lord Mayor’s Australia Day Cultural Award, the Prime Minister’s Medal (2003) for his contribution to music, and a Churchill Fellowship, allowing him to observe choral leadership in the United States and Canada.
Recent memorable performances include a special recital of Bach’s Suite no. 5 at the Cervo Sommerakademie; as soloist with the Pulse Chamber Orchestra in Queensland Music Festival’s Twilight in the Red Box series 2018; and with the Australian Youth Orchestra’s ‘Momentum Ensemble’. Simon has performed with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Youth Orchestra. He was the winner of the 2017 4MBS-Musica Viva Chamber Music Prize at the School of Music, UQ. Simon also performs regularly with his band ‘The Biology of Plants’.
As Co-Founder and first Director of The Australian Voices, Graeme helped further establish a new awareness of Australian choral music. He has conducted several Australian premiers, including Morten Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna, Benjamin Britten’s The Company of Heaven and The World of the Spirit, Andrew Carter’s Benedicite and Missa Sancti Pauli, Javia Busto’s Requiem and Dominic Argento’s A Toccata of Galuppi’s. He has commissioned many pieces that have become Australian choral classics, such as Past Life Melodies (Hopkins) and Ngana (Leek).
