VOICES OF REMEMBRANCE Friday 9 November 2018, 7pm Empire Theatre, Toowoomba Saturday 10 November 2018, 7pm Munro Martin Parklands, Cairns

MESSAGE FROM THE GOVERNOR OF QUEENSLAND As Governor of Queensland and Patron of the Queensland Music Festival, I am delighted to support the Voices of Remembrance concerts. The Armistice Centenary is a time for our State to pause and remember the service and sacrifice of so many Queenslanders who came before us. It is also an opportunity to pay tribute to our men and women who are currently in active service. Tonight we honour those past and present, commemorating the centenary of the signing of the Armistice in a powerful performance—a celebration of the very best in Queensland arts. The worldwide significance of this historic occasion has taken Kaye and me to a service at Villers-Bretonneux, and while we unfortunately cannot be part of Voices of Remembrance, the event is most certainly in our thoughts as we represent our State in France. Congratulations to everyone involved with tonight’s performance, from those taking the stage and the men and women behind the scenes, to the sponsors, supporters and volunteers who so willingly give their time. Thank you also to the enthusiastic and appreciative audience in attendance. I wish you all a most enjoyable time.

His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC Governor of Queensland

A MESSAGE FROM THE PREMIER During the Anzac Centenary, Queenslanders sombrely observed many important First World War anniversaries. The commemorations for the Armistice Centenary—which marks the signing of the historic agreement that led to the end of the First World War—hold the same character. We reflect on all who served and the many Queenslanders who made the ultimate sacrifice. However, the Armistice also invokes more positive sentiments. It is, after all, a lasting reminder that periods of peace can and do come. Voices of Remembrance explores this breadth of emotion. Some performances tonight will elicit smiles, others may move you to tears. However, each will serve as a powerful reminder of the Armistice and will honour those who endeavoured to bring about peace. As a passionate supporter of the arts, I’m delighted to recognise all who have brought this commemoration to life: Daniel Evans, Dr Jonathon Welch AM, Gordon Hamilton, Katie Noonan, Teddy Tahu Rhodes, Patrick Pickett and Michael Tuahine, as well as the many talented choralists, instrumentalists and individuals working behind the scenes. It is also important to thank the many regional choirs that have enriched their communities’ Armistice Centenary ceremonies and services by performing their own renditions of songs from Voices of Remembrance. I trust you will enjoy tonight’s performance and will treasure the opportunity to honour our past and present servicemen and women in the lead up to the Armistice Centenary.

Annastacia Palaszczuk MP Premier of Queensland Minister for Trade

A MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Voices of Remembrance is a unique commemoration of the music of the First World War, and the songs that gave our servicemen and women hope in terrible times. With a choral performance bringing together people from all over the state, it is a wonderful opportunity to pay tribute to the people who served our country, with their favourite melodies brought to vigorous life a hundred years from Armistice. We are thrilled to be featuring the world premiere of a specially commissioned new composition by revered Queensland composer Gordon Hamilton, alongside interpretations of wartime favourites, Voices of Remembrance will interpolate music from the past century with rarely seen archival footage and evocative readings. Stories from the lives of soldiers and their families frame this reflective and dynamic performance, in what is sure to be two deeply moving evenings. Directed by Queensland’s own award winning Daniel Evans and showcasing accomplished performers from Australia and New Zealand, Voices of Remembrance will be a singular chance to come together in the centennial spirit of reconciliation and respect. We hope you enjoy and I really hope you sing along with us, so we can form one voice together – united to honour the legacy of those extraordinary men and women, who sacrificed so much in the hope of a world filled with peace and compassion.

Katie Noonan Artistic Director, Queensland Music Festival

SYNOPSIS VOICES OF REMEMBRANCE One hundred years ago on 11 November 1918, four years of brutal conflict came to an end. Almost 62,000 Australians died fighting for our freedom and in service of our nation. The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month attained a special significance in the post-war years. Following the 1919 anniversary, two minute silence was instituted as part of the main commemorative ceremony and has become a central feature of commemorations on Armistice Day, today known as Remembrance Day. To commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the end of the First World War the Queensland Government presents two concerts, in Toowoomba and Cairns, in remembrance of those who sacrificed their lives. The concerts also honour those who returned home to make a life they had fought for, paying respect to the soldiers from Australia and New Zealand who forged the Anzac spirit and fought to protect their countries and the ones they love. Voices of Remembrance features music in the lead up to and during the war; songs that continue to be part of our lives, and some new works that reflect on the victory and the people at home. Favourites such as Keep The Home Fires Burning, Pack Up Your Trouble In Your Old Kit Bag and It’s A Long Way To Tipperary will be sung by mass choirs to new orchestral arrangements, along with contemporary reflections on the war including And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda and A Mother’s Plea. A world premiere of Australian composer Gordon Hamilton’s specially commissioned piece, Eleven, will feature the core choirs of each city. Eleven is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the valiant soldiers and a homage to the spirit of those who fought to defend and ultimately claim victory for the allies. A state-wide choral program encouraged communities across Queensland to commemorate the centenary of the signing of the Armistice through music. Mass choirs have been created from each community to perform the songs at Voices of Remembrance. Cairns and Toowoomba Community Orchestras accompany the soloists and choirs in stirring renditions with the audience invited to join in. Directed by Daniel Evans and hosted by renowned actor Michael Tuahine, tonight’s concert features conductor Patrick Pickett, musical and choral director Dr Jonathon Welch AM, award winning songstress and QMF Artistic Director Katie Noonan and renowned New Zealand baritone Teddy Tahu Rhodes.

His Action Hero (2016) pairs the recorded voice of Arnold Schwarzenegger with orchestra and was premiered by WDR Funkhausorchester, Cologne. His 50-minute choral opera MOON (2011) has toured Australia, Germany and to the Edinburgh Fringe. Under a more cheeky guise, Gordon reassembles the contributions of unwitting collaborators. His Tra$h Ma$h (2012) reassembles fleeting grabs from pop songs. Toy Story 3 = Awesome! (2011) sets a stream of inane consciousness from his own Facebook news feed.
