Kennedy Ignites IPSWICH CLASSIC
B
rett Kennedy driving a Holden Commodore has proven the driver of the weekend with a top class driving display in the Queensland Touring Car Championship, taking four wins at the Weekends Ipswich Classic at Queensland Raceway. The Popular Classic event saw over 150 cars competing over the two days across nine racing categories. Kennedys victory was enough to secure him the 2015 QTCC championship with his closest rival 2014 Champion Karl Begg in his BMW managing only seventh for the round. The challenger duties in the final round were left to Brett Boulton in his BMW taking a string of four, third places with Justin Anthony rounding out the podium for the weekend. Murray Kent
was the unlucky one taking three second places but a DNF in race three put fourth overall. Class B was taken out by Garry Hawgood in his HSV wining all four races with Ricky McDougall in a Commodore second from Andrew Knight in his Datsun 1600 in third. The Well Pro Production Sports One hour was comfortably taken out by Geoff Fane in his Dodge Viper. Fane lead home by more than 20 seconds a trio of 911 GT3’s of Hennig, Sparks and McFadden. Berry robbed him of outright Victory for the weekend with wins in race one and two putting him second overall for the weekend. The Outright Victory for the weekend went to Hennig with Fane manging fourth outright after not finishing race one. Brian Ferrabee was the First of the MX5’s home in the one hour ahead of Jeff Hulme. Ben Simpson nearly took a perfect weekend in the HQ’s winning three of the fourth races on offer. Mick McCloud was the only driver who could stop Simspon taking victory in race two before not finishing for the rest of the weekend. Brock Mitchell claimed second spot for the weekend with two seconds and two thirds and Jason Levitt stood on the last podium spot with three third place finishes. The Formula Vee’s was clean swept by Paul Mantiet backing up from his great form at the last round at Lakesdie Park. Curtis Power and Ken Taylor once again provide strong opposition for Manteit the pair traded second place finishes with Porter claiming second for the weekend. Mantiet has a commanding lead going into the final round for 2015 and looks set to claim the championship.
The Excel Championship continued its reputation as a hard fought Championship with Brett Parish taking his third round win for 2015. The Excel Championship continued its reputation as a hard fought Championship with Brett Parish taking his third round win for 2015 and extending his lead to 50 points in the championship. Jason Lansdell managed to bring Parish’s run of 6 race wins in a row to an end by 0.2 of a second in race three then backed up and took victory again in race four. Lansdell finished second for the round from Michael Tuckwood who took a second in race one and then finished off the last three races with third place.

Peter Baguley didn’t have it all his own way in Group N. The Torana driver won race one and two but was beaten home in race three by Allen Boughen in his Mercury Comet. Wayne Stratford was third overall holding out Norm Singelton and David Street. The Gemini’s saw Nick Rangeley take a clean sweep of victories ahead of Ben Tomlin and Corey Willis. Willis took second place in race one but Tomlin turned the tables and cleaned up second in the next three races. Gregg Chesterfield
managed to sneak onto the podium in race two and three but it was only good enough for fourth overall. Charlie O’Brien wrapped up the 2015 Trans Am title with four victories over the weekend. Brett Curran looked likely to be best of the rest after two second place finish but failed to finish the third race with problems which saw him out for the rest of the weekend. Craig Harris took second place in race three and four in his Mustang with john English in the Pontiac finishing third overall. Other winners over the weekend were Greg Willis, Michael Kulig and Grant Spaninks all taking class victories in the Racer Industries Classic Sports Sedans, with Spaninks and Kulig clean sweeping while Willis was only beaten in race one by Kulig’s father George in his Monte Carlo. The next racing event at Queensland Raceway will be Round 6 of the QRDC on November 7 & 8.

Winterbottom again blitzed the start and flew off into the distance in the FG X, taking a great win in the first of the two 20 lap races, while Mostert made a poor start and was left in a battle with Scott McLaughlin, Shane van Gisbergen and Craig Lowndes. McLaughlin finally finished second 0.377 secs in arrears, while Lowndes got by both the last lap saw for almost the entire race, and on the final lap Lowndes got by both van Gisbergen and Mostert on the final lap to take the minor podium

Behind the top three placegetters was David Reynolds who did well to greet the flag fourth in the Bottle O Racing PRA Ford, and fifth in the HRT Commodore was Garth Tander after he had a real dice with his teammate James Courtney later in the race. Post race v8supercars. com.au reported Courtney as saying he admitted to having a cramp in his right calf, an a late battle with the brake pedal, that cost him a better result. But at least he avoided another run-in with his team mate, Tander. After qualifying fourth, Jamie Whincup disappointed in the #1 Triple Eight Holden, as he had dropped to eighth at the finish.

The Excels of Luke Weber and Nigel Statham came together in the eastern loop just as the Tuckwood and Parrish arrived, with Tuckwood leading at the time. Michael went to the left and Brett ducked to the right, but as the two of them re accelerated down the hill onto the straight, it was Parrish who had the inside run on to the straight and went onto take the win.

The two had passed each other many times, with Tuckwood re passing Parrish straight away each time. Parrish had led the first lap but left the track exiting hungry corner and dropped back to the mid pack. His drive back to the front saw some slick passes as Tuckwood put his head down and tried to keep the gap. Front runner from the earlier racers Steve Hay was excluded with a technical infringement that let Jason Landsell take the final podium position. The Italian Challenge was a one horse affair a prancing horse at the hands of Peter Jones. Jones took victory in all five races convincingly in his Ferrari F430 with the rest of the pack to battle it out for the minor places. The Alfetta of Mark Jackson managed to hold out the rest of the pack for a two second places when Maika Ter Horst Fiat 124 had mechanical issues after taking second in the first two races. Roll Racing TAKES RACING OFF THE STREETS
O
ne of the rising social problems of young people and automobiles is illegal street racing. With the popularity of movies such as the Fast & the Furious illegal street racing has become more prevalent in our community. But that changed on a Saturday Night in September when Queensland Raceway launched its first of many Saturday Night Roll Racing with its aim to take the street racers off the streets and put them in a safe and legal environment. Roll Racing is a concept that started in the US a few years ago has aided in removing illegal street races. Illegal street racing sees a moving road block of cars driving down the motorways where two cars will challenge each other in a high speed rolling drag race.

Queensland Raceways CEO John Tetley said “Street racing is a social problem that can only be addressed by coming up with solutions that utilise a purpose built facility to take the danger out of the activity. Queensland Raceway is the perfect choice to conduct roll racing and gives street racers a place to challenge their mates without the dangers to themselves or other with illegal street racing.” Mr Tetley went on to say “We have provided an affordable place for drifting which has significantly reduced the level of street drifting but now we see young
people moving away from drift and into rolling street racing. Saturday Night Roll Racing aims is to reduce the amount of Illegal Street racing in much the same way as our drift program did” This Saturday Night will kick off the season for Roll Racing with Queensland Raceway making the investment to help reduce the level of Illegal Street Racing. The investment sees participants costs kept down to $50 per person. Drivers will need a racers licences which costs $55 per annum or $20 for the day. Drivers will be able to line up

amaha Racing Team with Yamaha Motorcycle Insurance’s (YRT with YMI) Cru Halliday has come up trumps at the third round of the Australian FX-IPONE Superbike Championship (AFX) at Sydney Motorsport Park by taking out both races. After starting from pole position, Halliday held his teammate, Wayne Maxwell at bay by .400sec to win his first ever Superbike race that he later described as a “great feeling!” The second race saw Halliday leading the early laps till he slipped down the order. He later came back towards the end of the race to finish second on track behind Team Honda Racing’s Jamie Stauffer, but won the race as Stauffer was handed

a 15-second jump-start penalty. It was a drag race to the line that saw Halliday beating the three times Australian Superbike champion, Glenn Allerton (YRT with YMI) by just .010sec. “This is unreal,” beamed Halliday, who openly admitted that he was a little bit slow in race two as he was riding a bit conservative. “I came into this round not very confident after Mallala, but to be able to get the pole and two wins is simply amazing. I can’t say enough about the whole Yamaha Racing Team with Yamaha Motorcycle Insurance team. They have all worked flawlessly over the gap since round two.” With a 4-2 result it was good enough to see Allerton claim second place, ten points behind Halliday. While Allerton was happy enough to get second pla-

ce, he still is having a few issues with the settings on the Yamaha R1M. “The team are doing a great job in trying to solve my issue, and they are really just my issues, as I ride the Yamaha R1M a little bit different to Cru and Wayne,” said Allerton. “Overall, I’m happy. Of course I want to win, but tomorrow is the big day. It’s going to take a big effort to win tomorrow; I’m not kidding myself about that. I’m really going to have to put in the big yards tomorrow.” Picking up the last step of the podium was Team Honda Racing’s Troy Herfoss who scored two third place finishes for the round. While Herfoss was not over the moon about his third place finish, he does still top the championship standings heading into Queensland Raceway in August with a eight point advantage over Maxwell. “I’m happy that I lead the championship,” said Herfoss. “We just have to keep getting through each round the best we can. Sydney Motorsport Park is a hard track for me. I’m doing my best to get a good result.” Fourth place overall went to Maxwell, who also copped a 15-second jump-start penalty in race two. qldraceways.com.au
“I made a stupid mistake by jumping the start and I apologize to the team for a mistake like that,” said Maxwell. Rounding out the top five was Sean Condon (BikeBiz/IPONE/Swann Insurance Racing). Condon was pleased enough with fifth place, but he definitely felt like that he could have been in the top three. However a jump start in race one put Condon on the back foot. In the YRD Supersport class, Kawasaki Connection’s Rick Olson snared the surprised victory by stringing together a 5-1-1 result. Coming into round three, Olson did have high hopes of winning; however after Friday’s practice and qualifying he was not thinking that a podium place was possible at all. “I thought we could maybe get the Kawasaki Connection ZX6R setup for Sunday’s races.” After finishing in fifth place I the opening race, Olson knew he was fast enough to run at the front and that he did. Heading into tomorrow’s Swann Insurance Australasian Supersport round, Olson has a new set of tyres and his qualifying tyres which have only done three laps. Brayden Elliott (Hankook Tyres/Royan Truck Repairs) regarded his day as pretty good as he and his team worked on some setup issues which he believes will help for Sunday’s ASC round. “To be in the top three in all of the three races is really good,” said Elliott. Championship leader Michael Blair (YRD/Blairbuild/Campbell Hardware) finished in third with a 1-4-5 result, but still tops the championship with a 14-point lead over Callum Spriggs (YRD/Allsite Concrete Cutting/Hydro Construction) who came home in fourth place overall with a solid 4-3-3 result.

Defending Motorised SPORTS ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS
Q
ueensland Motorised Sports Council Inc (QMSC) is a resource to facilitate people and organisations who are enthusiastic about motorised sports activities and events communicating easily with each other. Our belief is that all motorised sport enthusiasts share the same core passion no matter how we express it. It has become increasingly difficult for those who support and/or participate in motorised activities to enjoy their chosen recreation – whether it be flying model aircraft, racing or simply enjoying a modified vehicle on the street. The reason for this is simple: motorised sports are an easy target because of the range of one-sided views in the community about people who enjoy any activity which might make a noise. QMSC is dedicated to educating people that motorised sports are legitimate recreational activities and create a significant economic benefit to the state. Those partaking in events and enjoying their ve-
16 | The QuaRterly magazine
hicles should be recognised as much as those who partake in any sporting code or hobby.
SOME EXAMPLES OF THE ISSUES OUR COMMUNITY FACES: The former Queensland State government introduced a number of pieces of legislation in early 2012 regarding what was and what was not acceptable in a modification of a motor car; modified the use of club registrations to further limit the amount of enjoyment these car owners can get from their recreational investment; and there are moves afoot that will severely impact on the owners of hot rods.
A number of model aircraft clubs have had to leave locations where they have been accepted for years because of complaints by one or two neighbours who have recently moved into the area. Groups that bring together young enthusiasts to enjoy their vehicles in a safe environment are targeted by police as their is easy revenue to be raised. Strength In Numbers The founders of the QMSC believe that, if we can pull together all of the people who enjoy motorised sports, it will represent a political force of such a size that it will be listened to. The lack of a credible organisation with one voice representing the many is a major reason that hundreds of thousands of people who enjoy motorised sport recreational activities and events (together with the thousands of companies that support and are supported by motorised recreational activities) have been so poorly dealt with by all levels of governments in the past. Current research shows the economic reach of the community stretches into the billions of dollars. QMSC is an incorporated not-for-profit umbrella organisation established to engage with, represent and advocate for and on behalf of the three elements that are essential to grow, support and enjoy motorised sports recreational activities and events. For the first time, these three elements (People, Venues and Organisations) will be represented equally by the QMSC. Essentially if your passion has an engine we are here to support you and advocate for you. QMSC provides a forum where companies, clubs, venues and enthusiasts can communicate with one another and governing bodies, including the various levels of government, to ensure the continuing growth and enjoyment of motorised sporting activities and events; at the same time, QMSC will cogently advocate against the ever more restrictive environment that bureaucracies impose on motorised sports activities and events.

The South Australian rally convert made the most of his pole position to lead McRae into the first corner before coming under relentless pressure from the Scotsman in the 10 lap 4WD final. Glenney elected to take his joker lap on the opening tour which saw the Mitsubishi Evo driver open up a healthy lead but it didn’t take long for McRae to close the gap in his Supercar Lite. The pair produced a thrilling dice for the lead until brake issues halted McRae’s charge. “It’s great to go down in history by being the first winner of Extreme Rallycross and it was great to be racing with Alister McRae,” said Glenney. “I think there are a few guys competing in other championships with

RICH HISTORY OF RALLYCROSS RETURNS. The super exciting sport of Rallycross is rich in history in this country, with events having already been run in three states, with the upcoming event in Queensland joining Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia. One of the most exciting forms of motorsport of all time, Rallycross commenced in Australia at Melbourne’s Calder Park in 1969, two years after it kicked off in the United Kingdom. It was positioned inside the main racing circuit and quickly became a huge success. It didn’t take long to generate sufficient interest to establish the sport in New South Wales. A consortium of highly experienced motor sportsmen headed by Max Stahl, well known as Editor of Racing Car News at the time, made it happen in Katoomba. Like Calder, the Katoomba rallycross track was built on the inside of the Catalina Park race circuit, and after a huge amount of work by the Blue Mountains City Council in building the track. The first race meeting was run on 28 November 1971. South Australia had the sport in their state during the 70’s at the Tailem Bend facility, and they conducted the one and one only Australian Rallycross Championship in 1979, with the winner Larry Perkins driving a Volkswagen. Rallycross is a unique sport wherein it favours drivers with experience in two disciplines, circuit racing and rallying, for it has a mixture of tarmac and gravel, and comes with jumps and water qldraceways.com.au
splashes. Rear engined cars were very successful, particularly highly modified Volkswagen Beetles, with 2.2 litre powerplants, and drivers including Chris Heyer, Peter Mill and rally legend Barry Ferguson. The other popular and successful rear engined cars were the Renault R8, and Australian Rally Champion Bob Watson from Melbourne was always a front runner, as was Bruce Collier a multiple NSW rally champion. There were many drivers who made names for themselves as Rallycross drivers, while others were established stars of rallying and circuit racing Perhaps the biggest name was Peter Brock driving the Holden Racing Team XU1 Torana known as the ’Beast’ and it was a beast, while Colin Bond also drove the car.
