dings—and that’s just within the past year or so—and I’m looking forward to one in Morocco this fall. Going to all these wonderful places is a pleasure, especially when celebrating with family and friends. Still, I must admit, when I get a save-the-date for a local ceremony (traveling all the way to the National Arts Club in Gramercy Park, for example, with an after-party at the historic Pete’s Tavern), it’s a delight. Nowadays, people end up organizing so much of their vacation time for destination weddings that one could presumably never choose to go anywhere on their own, but instead be flung about the globe with each tastefully thick invitation controlling their time and locales. Yet we here at Quest can save you from hopping on too many flights to get to your cousin’s-college roommate’s-dentist’s-best friend’s-niece’s happy occasion with our February Wedding Issue. It’s much easier to thumb through these beautiful pages than risk having to spend three hours on the tarmac waiting for a gate to become available. We grab our carry-on bags and slip on our fluffy eye masks so that you don’t have to. But the wedding is just the beginning, isn’t it? Then the happy couple must decide what to do for their honeymoon, as well as what to do with that off-the-registry vase from Aunt Helen. Way back then, of course—whenever “then” was—there was the business of property. Anthropologists have figured out that once Man stopped wandering around hunting, and settled down to one spot to make a home, he began to own property. Among his assets was a wife. She was property, definitely needed to increase the workforce/family. All of it bears out Common Sense. All these millennia later, of course, marriage is still a practical matter of two conjoining to make a family, or at least a family-like life. It is also a
primary matter of property although the Little Woman is no more, and property she ain’t. And, if she’s wise, she knows all about it. Because in modern times, marriage is about Love, presumably. And Money, of course—if there is any to consider. But it looks like love paves the way to church bells ringing. During the Age of Monarchy, weddings were political mergers. Queen Victoria had nine children with her consort Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg. When the children grew up, each was married off to a Princess or Prince of some royal house or duchy across Europe. From them Victoria became grand-
mother to 18 grandsons, including Kaiser Wilhelm III, a later scourge known in the “family” as Willy. The rightful Grandmother of Europe, Queen Victoria was the primary instrument of foreign policy when England ruled the waves. Although even blood wasn’t thick enough for some. After Victoria died—and then her heir Edward VII died—her primary grandson, the intransigent and bellicose Willy, as the Kaiser, got into a war with England. Wedding as we’ve known it for the past century or more—Modern Times—is a confection that may have begun in Victoria’s reign
(1837–1902). The custom of the “white” wedding dress began with her. Some say her choice of white was a sign of extravagance, but it just may have been influenced by the values she held which emphasized sexual purity before marriage. White is still the “tradition” for the first marriage, although that too, like the business of sexual purity, has changed also. Although people have always married for a lot of practical reasons, be they social, financial, libidinal, religious, or just to get out of the house, the presumed password is “love.” But the matters of marriage have changed. The New Year and the month just past. The sudden departure in the last week of the old year of Carrie Fisher and her mother, Debbie Reynolds, within a day of each other was all over the media, the number one story 28 QUEST

that wasn’t gruesome or terrifying. Just very sad. Debbie was the kind of woman who would have appreciated that kind of newsworthiness about anyone’s demise. She and Carrie would have been impressed to know that they had both garnered more publicity in that week than either had since Eddie Fisher left Debbie 50 years ago for Elizabeth Taylor. Publicity was, and remains,

the name of the game in their profession. Keeping the persona “Out There In Front” of the audience for decades is no small matter. Both women respected and used that marketing device very effectively throughout their careers. Their public images were distinctly different in the generational sense. But their intentions were identical: get work. Mother was the teacher. She had learned well
from those who knew. I got a good look at their lives, particularly Debbie’s life and personality, in the late 80s when I wrote the autobiography Debbie, My Life (Morrow) for her. I could— and can still—recall the day when I was a young kid and rode my bike down to the Park Theater in the center of town to see Singin’ In the Rain on the big screen. I’d already seen her two years be-

There are more than a few of us, 65 years later, who still know all the words (there were about 10 of them) and still sing it to ourselves. I know this because some have confided that to me. This incident of their deaths got me to take the
book down off the shelf and read it again. In a way, I never “wrote” it, and although Debbie never wrote one word of it and never read any of it until it was finished, it was entirely hers except for the paragraphs, sentences, and phrases that kept the continuity. I’d interviewed her for more than 100 hours over the course of a year, transcribed every word, and used much
of it to create the story told in her own words, as well as reflect the personality which was at once witty, clever, sharp, hilarious, perspicacious, loyal, kind, and sad. Hermes Pan, Fred Astaire’s career-long partner in Fred’s choreography, had worked several times with Debbie from early in her career, and knew her well. When he heard I’d been hired to write
her book, he described her thusly: “She’s not a great actress, she’s not a great singer, she’s not a great dancer, but she is a great talent!!” Debbie could do everything, and she worked hard at infusing that great talent in a performance that left a sweet and gentle impression and appreciation on millions. 2013 when I saw Debbie in the role of Liberace’s mother, Frances, in the HBO production of Stephen Soderbergh’s Behind the Candelabra. It came as a surprise to a lot of NYSD readers that that was Debbie in the role. Seeing it, I knew instantly that Debbie’s Frances was an exacting re-creation of the real person. The Mother. Debbie and Lee (which is how Liberace was known to friends) had been very good friends. They were neighbors in Las Vegas as well as neighbors in their hotel appearances. Many
an after-the-show night was spent in each other’s dressing rooms, with their friends, entertaining each over drinks, and cigarettes, and laughter until dawn. Debbie’s performance as Frances Liberace was brilliant in even the classical sense. Debbie’s work reminded me of Lillian Burns Sidney who had been her mentor and lifelong supporter of her talent. Lillian had been the head acting coach at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer from 1938 through 1952 when Mr. Mayer himself occupied the

mogul’s suite in the Thalberg Building, and was the veritable King of Hollywood. Lillian was a tiny woman, no more than 4’11” standing (always) erect. She bore a natural air of distinction in her presence. She was always smartly dressed and poised; a forthright, plain-spoken, right-thinking woman who loved the “picture business,” as it was called, and all kinds of the creative talent that went into it. Especially actors, writers, and directors. In her position during her time at Metro—from 1938

Right down to one hour a day with the photographer to get that million-dollar smile down to a science. The camera was king. I was introduced to Debbie after being vetted by Lillian. Lillian and I had met in a circuitous way—the road that writers are often on while pursuing a project. I sent her
some “samples” of my writing to consider me for the job. One was the story of my friend Channing Chase and her “Sudden Death” which occurred in my house in Los Angeles. Channing was revived and survived. It was that story that “got” to Lillian, who read everything as if she were witnessing it personally on the screen. She later told me that as she got to the end of the article in which the then comatose Channing was beginning to

show signs of recovery, Lillian found herself saying out loud: “Live…Live…Live!!” She told me she then said to herself: “If he can do this for this girl I don’t know, he can do this for my Debby….” When we met (in 1986), Debbie was then enjoying her 40th year in the entertainment/film/television business that used to be known as Show Business. At this point, she’d become a senior veteran with a working career even longer than her MGM school-

Considering the length of her film career, she’s worked with many of the greatest film directors (and stars) of the past eight decades. I don’t think there is anyone else living who can make that claim, with the possible exception of Angela Lansbury, who continues to take on new work. I was thinking of Lillian on that Sunday night watching Debbie’s performance in the Liberace film. Debbie was her star child, her talented daughter. The two women often discussed Debbie’s work on specific project. Lillian was a keen advisor when it came to creative work. Watching Debbie, I was thinking how
Lillian would have been very proud of her student/daughter’s achievement in the role of Mrs. Liberace. Truth. Lillian Burns Sidney died in 1998 in her ninety-fifth year. She was a remarkable woman, a great friend, and a great character and loving teacher. There is a series of video interviews with her now on YouTube. They were done when she was in her late 80s or early 90s. The interviewer focused on her career in, and observations of, the American films made in the age of the Studio system. Lillian was one of a kind, an angel to many of us including her Debbi-la, as she referred to her in moments of fond memory.
If you should watch, bear in mind this is a woman who witnessed most of the great stage and film talent of the 20th century, a little girl from Chicago (she pronounced it Chi-caw-go) who became one of the most influential women in the American film industry in its so-called Golden Age. ments. The project involves showing people how there are alternatives to pursuing a future without a college education. Mr. Thiel’s fellows (the 20 chosen) are given $100,000 to spend on whatever project they decide. The idea isn’t to discourage college educations, but to encourage innovation, inventiveness, imagination, and foresight— among other characteristics. It’s not so much innovative as a revival of the old tried and true ways. I always use Henry Ford as an example of what people can do without a college degree. Back at the beginning of

Gods is about some of the individuals who applied for the Thiel “fellowships.” Brilliance, eccentricity, imagination, foibles, and intense personalities often come with the mental package of the simplest inventions. So, I get to the party and the Wolfes’ apartment is jammed—the entrance gallery, the library, the living room. Wall to wall people and everyone having a great and jolly chat. Tom Wolfe was in one crowded room surrounded by friends and admirers enjoying pleasant conversation. The author herself was nearby, sporting a glass of champagne and having a laugh with another author, Vicky Ward. Alexandra Wolfe is a very smart young woman. I almost want to say “girl” but she’s probably in her early 30s (or late 20s). And she’s an excellent journalist, covering her subjects with a thorough-
ness that is often concealed by her very bright and sharp conversation. But sometimes it seems there’s something about me that makes her laugh all the time. She was doing that last night. Maybe it was the champagne? I asked her to inscribe my copy of the book and she wrote: “Dear David, Thank you so much for the years of hilarious lunches….Love, A.” I was very flattered that she thought of our lunches that way, although I don’t think of myself as that “hilarious”—leaving me to wonder what it is about me that makes her laugh all the time. Maybe I should look in the mirror? Crawford Doyle, the bookstore on Madison Avenue and 81st Street closed on Tuesday January 10, for good. I went over there the day before, and bought three books, mainly as a gesture of respect for their work (as well as another excuse to buy books—and they were all

This was where Truman at that time in his life was working on Breakfast at Tif-

Neighborhoods such as the Heights were reflections of an era before the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan Bridge were built. It was a geographically a separate community across the water from Manhattan. Over time it, because of its proximi-

The residential neighborhood that still had allure for this Southern boy in the 1950s—the Heights—is full of characters and stories. The author takes you on his walks and you see the world, meet the people, hear their
voices and get their personalities through his eyes. His prose often has a hushed elegance to his descriptions, and the rascal putting them down can easily interrupt them with a tweaking to ease his own envy.
As much as I read, I tend to approach a new book with some doubt. Will I have time? Is it too long? Will it keep me interested, will I learn, feel, know, etc. And I’ve read Capote and have even thrilled to some of his

IT SEEMS LIKE YESTERDAY PAUL AND LINDA MCCARTNEY had the most idyllic place in the South of England—a vast estate set in Peasmarsh in East Sussex, practically on the spot that began the Norman conquest of England— where the Battle of Hastings was fought in 1066. As I recall, Linda had seen this beautiful Appaloosa horse standing alone in a vast field one day when they were out for a drive. Paul had given it to her after she said it was the most beautiful horse she had ever seen. Always a free spirit, Linda was a champion rider by the age of 13, but here she preferred to ride bareback and barefoot with only a braided reins. When you were with them it was easy to see that they were a team, completely natural and at ease with each other. They married in 1969 and Linda performed with Wings on stage, and they were together until her untimely death in 1998. It has been said that Paul’s last words to Linda described her as riding on her Appaloosa on a spring day with a clear blue sky. A beautiful way to remember her. ◆ 64 QUEST

HOLLYWOOD IS IN A SNIT. Hollywood is very angry and depressed. Hollywood is having a nervous breakdown. The Donald is in the White House and Hollywood types cannot take it any more. Ditto for the New York Times and the T.V. networks, except for Fox. Frank Bruni, a Times columnist who used to write about food and now 66 QUEST
advises us about politics, is upset. Another hysterical Times columnist, a guy called Blow, has put on a show demanding “The Donald” does a no-show, but he didn’t get his wish. He now calls the 45th president illegitimate, a “troglodyte” who won a Russian rigged election. Such are the joys of our liberal
media, but let’s not judge them too harshly. They’re depressed, and, lacking talent, they’ve descended to the lowest common denominator of screaming abuse and crying foul. (They all remind me of losing Greek political candidates, and also some South American ones; there are no real elections in Africa, hence I will skip that

continent.) And then there’s Max Boot, a neocon-Washington-ass-licker, whose name obviously derives from having a large boot shoved up you know where sometime in his or his family’s past. He calls “The Donald” a Manchurian Candidate, which brings me back to Hollywood. And Meryl Streep. Now no one in their right mind would deny her talent, no one except our president, that is. But an ex-editor of mine, Charles Moore, who at 25 was named head of The Spectator, the oldest weekly magazine in the English speaking world, has recently revealed how the sainted Meryl was guilty of exactly what she accused “The Donald” of in her speech at the Golden Globes. Moore is now be in his late fifties and is the official biographer of Margaret Thatcher. He is one of the most respected writers and journalists in Britain, a nation that views the “hacks” as journalists, and are referred to in that rainy place as one step above child molesters. The controversy began when Trump was campaigning in 2015 and alleged that
“thousands of Muslims in Jersey City had publicly celebrated the attack of 9/11.” The allegation caused outrage and his numbers now seem to have been wildly exaggerated. However, the Trump camp came up with evidence that such celebrations had taken place, and one such evidence was covered by a Washington Post hack by the name of Serge Kovaleski, who wrote following the attacks. Fourteen years later, Kovaleski denied that he had written it, and was in turn attacked by Trump as a liar. The hack could not undo what he had written, no matter how hard he wanted to. So he lied and Trump made fun of him, making gestures that Trumps critics immediately misconstrued as making fun of Kovaleski’s withered arm. Trump defenders pointed out that “The Donald” had made the same gestures when mimicking weasel excuses by Ted Cruz, who does not have any physical disabilities. As Charles Moore points out, when looking at the clips, Trump has a very strong case. Meryl got the headlines she wanted
by defending someone who had used the excuse of his disability to smear Trump—who happened to be innocent of the charge. Yet “La Streep” herself turns out not to be as clean as she pretends. Disrespect for the afflicted won her an Oscar, as when she portrayed Lady Thatcher in the film about the Iron Lady. Lady Thatcher was still alive and very conscious of how Meryl portrayed her. According to people in the know, Lady Thatcher was very hurt by it. Empathy is a word used quite a lot by Hollywood types while virtue signaling. Meryl got a lot of mileage out of virtue signaling at the Golden Globes. Margaret Thatcher was a great leader, who deserved better than the way Meryl portrayed her, i.e. as having lost her mind. But that’s Hollywood for you. serendipitous. A friend asked me to design a pair of earrings for her. Initially reluctant, I started sourcing diamonds to match my high-quality standards and ended up finding them in Russia. My friend’s utter happiness and delight upon seeing them were the impetus I needed to get into this field. Q: What inspires you most when it comes to bridal jewelry? A: Our iconic Celestial setting, which is used in part of our bridal jewelry, is inspired by the bright halos that frame the stars. Just like a celestial body is surrounded by an abundance of shining stars, a large center stone shines among a mystical halo of brilliant-cut diamonds, giving a sense of celestial buoyancy. CAPSTAR, A SALUTE TO SERVICE BY ALEX TRAVERS CHARLES BOWMONT is describing the scene. “You get out of the airport and there’s a sea of Mercedes and Cadillac SUVs.” But then, amid the Mercedes and Cadillacs and taxis, there’s a Jaguar, piloted by an immaculately dressed trained veteran, ready to take you home. “And that,” enthuses Bowmont—who is actually the Marquis of Bowmont and the soon-to-be Duke of Roxburghe—“is Capstar.” There are many remarkable aspects to Capstar, the luxury chauffer business Bowmont founded with Rob Bassett Cross in 2013: for instance, the way it has become one of the more active private companies—rather than a government—to provide meaningful employment opportunities for veterans in both the United Kingdom and the United States; the way it went from an idea in Bowmont’s head to a fully operational business in two continents (Capstar currently operates in New York and London) in just a few years; the unique fleet
of cars it steadily keeps on the road; its services in private aviation. But the most remarkable fact about Capstar is that it continues to help veterans transition to other positions as well. Capstar, in essence, is a springboard for ex-soldiers to find careers in almost any industry. “A lot of these guys didn’t think they were necessarily going to be chauffer drivers for life,” says Bowmont, a vet of the British Army. “And many are recruited by our top clients to do other things. Actually, that’s part of the whole motivation of why we set it up: it provides an opportunity for someone else.” One ex-driver, for instance, is now working for a major telecommunications company in London. Another is the head of security for a hedge fund. “And these guys started doing airport runs,” says Bowmont. Soon, we will be in a world that not many people know is so close at hand: where cars can essentially drive themselves.

Bowmont talks about these advances as if they are right around the corner. It might feel like the future to us, but to him it’s as though this is an almost inevitable iteration of what those in the automobile industry know can be done already. Of course, this will most likely affect drivers working for services like Uber or Lyft. Companies with tens of thousands of cars on the road who aim to get customers from point A to point B. Fortunately, the practical present-day focus at Capstar is on service and security. They happily cater to very specific needs. A CEO may use a Capstar driver to take her to and from work, but the same CEO may also use Capstar to have her children dropped off at school. “A lot of clients love the idea that they know the drivers personally,” assures Bowmont. “And all the guys have been highly vetted.” For Bowmont, it is a point of pride to uphold these high standards and hire unique employees like Dan Richards, a former lance-bombardier. Richards is one of Capstar’s most requested drivers. And Dan Richards, who endured a terrible accident, has a prosthetic hand. Before Capstar, he, like many veterans who have suffered from posttraumatic stress, had a difficult time finding a job. “He filled out 324 job applications and got three interviews in that process,” recalls Bowmont. When a charity introduced Richards to Capstar, “he was a bit of a shell of his former self,” notes Bowmont. Capstar, through its training program, helped build Richards back up, and last year, in 2015, he received the Professional Driver of the Year award in United Kingdom. “Effectively,” says Bowmont, “ the chauffer driver’s Oscars.” Richards has much to recommend him. He isn’t just a good chauffeur. He embodies the spirit of Capstar itself. He is all its elements—discipline, honor, integrity, reliability, trust—rolled into one. u

HARLEM ACADEMY, DEVELOPING STUDENTS AND SCHOOL

OUT IN HARLEM, New York, Vincent Dotoli still can’t wrap his mind around it. There are simply too many children slipping through the cracks of our education system. Mostly, these are low-income students with test scores in the 75th–85th percentile. “Those scores,” Dotoli—the head of school at Harlem Academy—explains, “are too high to receive attention at public or charter schools where so many struggling students need special attention just to reach minimum standards. But these scores are also too low for them get into the competitive programs.” Harlem Academy opened in September 2004 with a mission to drive opportunity for promising, low-income students who might otherwise be left behind. Its first class consisted of 12 first graders. The main focus was on core academic skills—reading, writing, and thinking critically. In just a year, Harlem Academy expanded, moving to a larger space and adding grades. Today, the school occupies a few buildings off Fifth Avenue, serving grades one through eight. The student body consists of around 120 children, and there are plans to open a permanent campus. Harlem Academy is a private school. Its students mainly come from Harlem, the South Bronx, and Washington Heights. In 90 percent of the districts it serves, no kindergarten students scored high enough to access the competitive citywide Gifted and Talented programs. At HA, tuition is set on a sliding scale. Here, no qualified student is turned away. Based on the school’s data, 15 percent of HA’s operating costs are covered by tuition. Donors supply the other 85 percent. The cost per student is comparable to that of the local public schools, and will improve when they move into their own building. A growing number of donors are investing in the school each year as well. In the classroom, there is an emphasis on intellectual engagement, character development, and family partnership. A major goal at HA is to help students thrive at the highest academic levels, enabling them to catch up with higher income peers. The program is starting to attract attention more broadly across the education world. Teachers and education leaders F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 7 8 1
visit to see the program in action, and two national journals will be publishing articles in the next six months. “Excellence and transparency,” says Dotoli. “We want to get great ideas out there—and we want to share everything we learn.” On a recent visit, in mid-November, I walk in on a group of fourth grade students getting ready to play chess. Their teacher is going over the rules of the tournament. When he’s finished, one of the students has a question. “What happens if you get eliminated?” he asks. “You cry,” exclaims another. There’s about a second of silence, and then the entire room laughs. For this group of students, chess is clearly fun. But it is more than just a game where a loss will lead to elimination, which may or may not lead to tears. It is a game that teaches students to consider consequences before they take an action; it demonstrates an important life skill. So in some ways, Harlem Academy’s ethos is simple. And yet, at the same time, its practices are also deeply innovative. “We’ve learned that we must put the majority of the focus on core academic skills and strong habits,” stresses Dotoli. “Rather than worry about what books we’re going to read or what historical era we are going to study, we want to make sure our students are getting enough high-quality at-bats, so they develop the skills they need.” Later that afternoon, I meet some students. They politely introduce themselves, and we take a seat in the school’s library. A boy named Caden tells me about what he’s doing in class— learning vocab words, classifying the properties of rocks, studying their orders. He’s also reading a book called The Runaway Hug. “Sometimes,” he adds, “I read at a two-point-five level, but sometimes I read books above three-point-two,” representing second and third grade reading levels. Caden is in first grade. At Harlem Academy, there is a school creed. It builds off of four core pillars. A first grade student tells me what they are. “Integrity,” she says, “is having values and being honest. Initiative is doing things on your own. Compassion is caring for others. And Determination”—she tilts her head down and her eyes look up—“is not giving up.” Never give up. That one rings true with Dotoli. And although there have been complications and struggles—“anytime you want to do something to a very high standard, it’s going to be challenging,” he reports—the entire first graduating class at Harlem Academy finished high school in four years. Of that group, 92 percent are currently enrolled in four-year colleges. It’s an incredible accomplishment. In Dotoli’s view, the school is raising the ceiling for low-income children. He knows, given the proper resources and skills, that these children will have better opportunities. Will there be more challenges along the way for both the students and the school? Yes. “But we’re a good bet,” Dotoli assures, “and there’s still an opportunity to be a part of the founding team to actually build the school’s home and ensure its permanence.” All he asks is that you come spend an hour at Harlem Academy and witness it in action. u This spread: Harlem Academy in action. Green Vale, a short distance from New York City, is nearly 100 years old, and Dougherty is its 10th head of school. He describes Green Vale as an institution “that balances tradition and innovation well.” A school, he notes, “with a strong community of learners.” When he first stepped on the campus as a potential candidate for head of school, several students approached him with questions. “This was their school,” he explains with a laugh. “They were invested in knowing that the head was 94 QUEST
going to be the right person.” Dougherty, now with three of his own children enrolled at Green Vale, has impressed both the students and the faculty. Interestingly, his doctorate degree was in faculty engagement, and at Green Vale he’s suggested that the teachers spend time focusing on the student experience—that is, on learning rather than teaching. “I ask our faculty to really imagine the experience of a student as they prepare for the day: What are the ways to have a peak learning experience as opposed to a great teaching day.” As the head of school, Dougherty has many other roles as well—for instance, developing long-term strategic planning; talking to parents about their children; going over financial policies with board members; forging partnerships with organizations such as the Cold Spring Harbor Lab and environmental programs like the North Shore Alliance; organizing social activities to bring together families. work, but it’s an expectation he enjoys. “I have a very open door,” he expresses, “and I like that we are a school of about 450.” He’s proud that he knows all the students. “That,” he adds, “actually allows us to push them further.” One student, for example, wanted to create a drone. Not an easy task. But with his teachers, he figured out how to get started. He set goals. Asked questions. Worked through the hurdles. When it was time, the student printed the majority of the materials on a 3D printer. Then, he and his teachers took it outside to test it out. It flew. Green Vale is all about inspiring its students to be their best. And creating a community of learners—that’s important, too. Marie and Guillaume were married in Lauris, in the Provence region of France, at their family estate. The bride had a bouquet made of baby’s breath, olive tree branches, and white thistle; her dress was designed by Céléstina Agostino. Marie’s mother surprised the couple with a New York–themed cake, in honor of where they live. The couple will spend their honeymoon in Japan. Fun fact: Guillaume did not technically propose. It was a love of skiing that brought them together, so it was only appropriate that Helen and Kristian should tie the knot against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains in Park City, Utah. The couple met while skiing in August 2013 in Portillo, Chile: she was on a vacation with several friends, he was there solo to experience the world-famous snow. Though they lived in separate cities Stateside, the couple dated long-distance for two years before becoming engaged and moving together to San Francisco. Last April, they were married at the Montage Deer Valley before 130 guests from around the world. Helen wore a dress by Vera Wang and was walked down the aisle by her father, Thomas J. Whalen. The couple danced to “In My Life” by The Beatles, Kristian’s pick as the most romantic song ever written. Lily and Thomas were married at Ten Elms, their family estate in East Hampton, New York. The night before, a rehearsal dinner was thrown by Kathy and BIlly Rayner at Woody House. Lily wore a dress by Carolina Herrera with a bouquet made of lavender and wheat stalks, and the string quartet played Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good” during the ceremony. Each table was named after some of their favorite books, from The Count of Monte Cristo to Asterix. For a late-night treat, guests roasted s’mores over a fire pit. The wedding planners were Duke + Van Deusen. Since the groom is French, not only did the event have a Franco-American theme, but the couple also previously had a party for 350 people in Paris last May at the Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac. The two spent their honeymoon in New Zealand, where they hiked a glacier and went skydiving.

Though most couples go on their honeymoon after the wedding, sometimes things happen in reverse. Such was the case for Amanda and Stephen, who traveled in September 2015 to the Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora for a combined wedding and honeymoon in the South Pacific. One year later, the couple celebrated their nuptials before friends and family at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento. The bride, in a dress by designer Amy Kuschel, was walked down the aisle by her father, Dr. William Reynolds Beck. She carried a bouquet of hydrangea, ginger, bougainvillea, Aranda orchids, spray and garden roses, stock, and Italian ruscus. The bridesmaids wore Ralph Lauren. The journalist and news anchor Elizabeth Farnsworth, a close friend, delivered heartfelt remarks during the ceremony and broke the news that Amanda was 20 weeks pregnant—with a girl. The couple delighted guests with a first dance to Paula Abdul’s “Forever Your Girl” before dinner and dancing.

Bridesmaids donned champagne silk faille gowns and LeLe Sadoughi’s crystal lily earrings, which the bride had given them as gifts. During the service, four vocalists from Cincinnati Conservatory of Music sang “This is the Day Which the Lord Hath Made” by John Rutter, and the newlyweds drove off from the service in the same car that the bride and her dashing father had arrived in—a chauffeured 1960 Jaguar MK IX. The account of the affair took three-quarters of a page of details: There were presents of jewels, gold and silver ware, articles of crystal, china, bronze. The bride wore a diamond necklace given to her by the groom. “The pendant consisted of a ruby, pearl, and sapphire, each surrounded by a cluster of large diamonds. The necklace and pendant together are said to have cost $75,000,” (or $10 million in today’s currency). Aside from the extravagance, the most important aspect of these weddings was that they took place at the same time that women were beginning to acquire—albeit very slowly—rights to independence that were unheard of in history. And one of those primary rights was that claimed by Alva Vanderbilt: divorce. It began with the rich—because they had the funds for liberation. With a decade or two, divorce was rampant in society, and a century later, it is not only uncommon, but now ordinary. The change in attitude, however, never dampened the enthusiasm for tying the marital knot. From the late 19th century right up to today, marriage (and especially weddings) remain one of the most memorably exciting activities of people in general. Marriage and weddings seem to be part of the human DNA, a natural act, no matter the outcome. u

THE MODERN MARRIAGE has taken on newness as a tradition. The ultimate weddings today are often week-long extravaganzas with guests jetting across the world to attend the exotic venue. This approach to a wedding was born (without the advantages of modern technology) in the last quarter of the 19th century in New York. In the midst of the first Gilded Age, the Society wedding took on a larger and clearer definition in November 1884, with the marriage of Mrs. Astor’s youngest daughter, Caroline, to Marshall Orme Wilson. The engagement was announced six months in de rigueur advance, hitting the papers on June 29. The New York Sun reported: “The engagement of Miss Caroline Astor and Mr. Orme Wilson has been formally announced in Paris, whither Mr. Wilson followed Miss Astor very soon after her departure, and whence he will return her accepted lover. Notwithstanding the worldly advantages which hedge the expectant bride on this occasion, the attachment between the young couple dates back to the early days when they were both members of Mrs. Parson’s well-known dancing class, and were young enough to believe in and to trust each other.” Caroline Schermerhorn Astor had grown up in the most socially important house in New York. The youngest daughter of William Backhouse Astor, she was more importantly the daughter of the imperious queen of New York society, the Mrs. Astor, the original Caroline Schermerhorn Astor. On the day after Carrie Astor’s big day, November 19, the New York Times reported: “The principal social event of the season took place yesterday afternoon. It was the marriage of Miss Caroline Schermerhorn Astor, the youngest and only remain-

“SOMETHING OLDE, something new, something borrowed, something blue, a sixpence in your shoe.” This tradition comes from an Old English rhyme and lists the objects that the bride adds to her wedding outfit or carries with her on the big day that are considered to be good luck charms. Nowadays, the superstition may have lost much of its influence, yet most brides end up continuing with tradition because of the charm behind the ritual. Carolina Herrera realizes this of course, and, to make it easy on brides, the designer adds a blue ribbon over a monogram to the inside of each of her wedding dresses. When mine was revealed, Julie Skarratt, my brilliant photographer, thought the personal touch too magical not to chronicle. Here is the perfect detail that modern brides need—we don’t have to do anything ridiculous (my shoes were quite empty of coins, thank you), but we aren’t quite thumbing our noses in the eyes of fortune either. If the saying was good enough for our great-great-greatgrandmothers, after all… —Lily Hoagland
