Good bye KBS

Andrew Summersides Goes National

October 6 -October 12

www.kootenayquickshot.ca

October is.. Breast Cancer Awareness Month and for the month of October 10% of all advertising dollars with Quick Shot will be donated to the Canadian Breast Cancer Society. In each issue this month, we will be featuring local stories of battles with the disease as well as information on breast cancer. To learn more or to donate visit www.bcsc.ca It’s funny, we had some debate about whether it was appropriate to feature a skateboarder beside a feature on breast cancer and came to a conclusion: what a silly question! Who hasn’t been affected by cancer and what does that have to do with a sport where people ride planks of wood with wheels. The contrast is exactly what Quick Shot is all about. Andrew Summersides is a pretty amazing young man who’s planning to take on the very competitive world of skateboarding and Megan Simpson is a truly inspiring tale of survival after being diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 30. Quick Shot Editor, GeoLyn Mantei-Hansen sat down with Megan and while tears were shed, an amazing story was shared (page 8). We hope you enjoy the issue and the stories of a couple of the amazing people the Kootenay’s have living here.

Goodbye KBS, Hello EZ Rock

EZ Rock, the region’s newest radio station hits the airwaves on October 5, 2011 at 9:00a.m. delivering More Music Variety. EZ Rock is still the same radio station the Kootenay/Boundary has come to know and love with just a few new shows and features to refresh the sound along with the new name. EZ Rock General Manager Nicole Beetstra: “This is a very excit-

ing time for us, and we hope our listeners, who’ve stood by us for over 80 years, love our new look and sound! Why the new EZ Rock? We wanted to find out what listeners want from their radio station and they said a wider variety of songs. We’ll play even more music from a variety artists like The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac and Phil Collins, while still focusing on the community we all call home.”

Itsy Bitsy Spider… NOT! So, here’s the story. I was sitting out back minding my own business drinking a coffee when this GIANT spider crawled down my arm and onto my hand. I’m talking with a body the size of a quarter. Okay, maybe a dime, but whatever, it was big enough for me to scream. I’m not your regular spiderscreamer. In fact, I’m the person who rescues people from them. (I do, however, make an exception when it comes to going into my Stephen King novel basement for any reason - I’ll pay someone to go down there.) The point is, I’m not often spider squeamish and whenever I come across them, or as the case may be, they come across me, I practice safe spider capture and release. Not this time. Full stomp!! Here’s something to know about spiders in Nelson. We have Black Widows. We have Hobos and I’m pretty sure we have the Hobo’s first cousin, the Brown Recluse. These guys are nasty. Friends of mine have a dog currently recovering from a trip to the vet for a Hobo bite. Here’s what you need to know – if you or your pet gets bitten by one

of these creeps, you need to get some medical assistance. Years ago when I lived in Prince Rupert where the spiders really are the size of quarters, if not loonies, someone told me a great spider deterrent was to put chestnuts around the base of my interior walls. I’ve been doing that for years and I’d say it works. This year it appears I need to secure the full perimeter of the property. While I believe in my chestnut solution in general, I’m still not taking any chances on that basement of mine. Yum: Fabulous food to check out in Nelson and area. Harvest season. Fabulous vegetables everywhere. Instead of highlighting a local restaurant fare, I’d like to share an interesting soup recipe provided by Kootenay Co-op. Curried Parsnip Soup. No kidding – parsnip soup! Until I tried this I thought I hated curry, parsnips and goat cheese. Apparently I was very mistaken. Check out the recipe of the week on page 12 for the full recipe. ~Paula Hudson-Lunn

Dominique Fraissard As an unsigned musician, imagine how amazing it would be to get a phone call from one of your heaviest influences, telling you they loved your album and wanted you to open for their Australian tour. This exact story happened to Dominique Fraissard, when one day at work Jon Butler (Jon Butler Trio) called him after being given a cd at a festival they both played at. A native of Australia, now relocated to the Slocan Valley, Fraissard is on the “one to watch” list. With five independently released albums, tours throughout Australia and Canada, numerous festival appearances and song placement

in a couple of films, he’s an artist that is gaining some ground after years of hard work. Using six and twelve-string acoustic guitars, looping pedals and a melodic voice reminiscent of Matthew Good, his songwriting has evolved into a very personal commentary on world events, social workings and love, expertly crafted with superior wordplay. Last year he released Art Of A Common Kind, an album of studio originals, as well as Cutting Teeth, a collection of live material collected over the last decade. This show will be the debut of a new e.p. at the start of yet another tour for Dom; with major artists and critics talking. DJ El Jimador will close out the night. ~Nelson From Nelson The
