Feature Artist - Avrell Fox Our feature artist this week is a piece by one of our favourite artists, Avrell Fox. The painting is of Brittany and Elliot Robins who were married September 17 at Beaver Creek Provincial Park. Brittany’s bridesmaids commissioned Avrell to paint the couple’s portrait and in true Avrell style she represents the flair and style of both the bride and groom perfectly, with Eilliot’s typewriter handy (a published author), to write a lifetime of love letters, and the notthat-shy Brittany, with her skirt hiked up just enough to keep things interesting. For more on Avrell visit her website: www.avrellfox.com.

Hailed by the Boston Globe as a “charismatic performer and singer”, Garnet is a man with a powerful physical presence close to six and a half feet tall - with a voice to match. With his “smooth, dark baritone” (Washington Post) his incredible range, and thoughtful, dramatic phrasing, Garnet is widely considered by fans and critics alike to be one of the finest singers anywhere. His music, like the man himself, is literate, passionate, highly sensitive, and deeply purposeful. Cinematic in detail, his songs “give expression to the unspoken vocabulary of the heart” (Kitchener Waterloo Record).

An optimist at heart, Garnet sings extraordinary songs about people who are not obvious heroes and of the small victories of the everyday. As memorable as his songs, his over-the-top humour and lightning-quick wit moves his audience from tears to laughter and back again.

Back to School – not just for kids! There are so many ‘Back to School’ specials it makes your head spin. From retail outlets to fitness centres and cell phone contracts, just about every business and service markets itself in September on the Back to School theme. But Back to School marketing from every store flyer, electronic media board and news source can dull your senses to the real excitement of life-long learning. Back to School can be a thrilling possibility, far, far beyond ‘two-for-one’ t-shirts or savings up to 40%. It can be creativity discovered/expressed; new skills acquired/tested/ mastered or forgotten ones polished. Going back to school, be it a night course, a weekend workshop or a full course load is not only a chance to develop skills and confidence, but it’s an opportunity to set course into the future. There’s still time to sign up: take a computer course, throw a pot, improve a grade point average, make jam, learn yoga or drive more effectively on ice and snow… My mother use to tell me I could stand to learn a thing or two. This year I’m going for Excel spreadsheets and Bellydance!

#3 502 Baker Street. Nelson, BC. 250.354.4843 Page 4

In the darkness of the night One of the good things about increasingly early darkness is that there’s time in the evening to walk around and enjoy Nelson’s night show. The lights in the trees

outside city hall, the streetlight illuminations of oaks and evergreens, the sparkle of houselights on the north shore, the shadow of the willow at Lakeside beach, the spooky light of a boat sliding silently into dock… Up at the corner of Vernon and Hall, take in the neon marquis at the New Grand Hotel. Three art-nouveau style neon light marquis – one over the hotel entrance, one above the Uptown Sportsbar and the third over Louis’ Steakhouse & Lounge – add wonderfully shaped colour bands to the blanket of darkness tucking Nelson in for the night. Yum: Fabulous food to check out in Nelson and area. TODAY’S SPECIAL. Most of Nelson’s fabulous restaurants and cafes offer daily specials – often regular menu items offered for a special price or enhanced by the addition of soup, salad or some other ‘special’ stuff. Sometimes, though, the special is just that – special to the day only. Bibo, at 518 Hall Street, offers daily features not necessarily included in the menu on other days. I can’t say for sure what evening I had their incredible Tuscan Stew (it could have been a Wednesday), but I have to find out because I’m going back for more!

Saskatoon’s The Sheepdogs are on an amazing trip right now. They recently won a competition with Rolling Stone Magazine that made them the first unsigned band to ever grace the cover. In the past couple months the guys have gone from slugging it in small town clubs, driving broke down vans to being media darlings, playing the Bonnaroo festival, Late with Jimmy Fallon, and meeting the likes of Curb Your Enthusiasm’s Larry David at a rooftop party thrown in their honour. We talked with bassist Ryan Gullen on the eve of the band’s tour with The Kings of Leon about the ride. Your Rolling Stone interview talks a lot about the low points in the band’s career before you got the cover, what would you say stands out as one or two of the lowest points?
